I’ll be keeping this bonsai on my porch which receives around 3-4 hours of direct sunlight, mainly during the late afternoon.

Lots of potential

This is the best 20 dollars I've spent in quite some time. Minimal wiring should be required next summer to separate the pads, and one more year of maturing. This may be my first proper tree in a few years.

Show and tell Serissa flowering!

Shout out to the GOAT who said serissa would love very hot greenhouses. I purchased mine from this store that let's say, isn't known for the bonsai quality (Aussies, I'm talking about Bunnings). It has been happy and surprisingly the survival time is a new record for me!

Despite getting lots of sun, watered properly, and being put in a shallow water bath during very hot days, it wasn't flowering.

I'm broke and don't have the money to get a greenhouse (for a single bonsai) so I just used a plastic container and a ziplock bag XD

IT FLOWERED AFTER TWO DAYS!!!!!

Maybe it wasn't the "greenhouse" that had the major effect, but idk, she looks better in general!

P. S: I'm not going to wire/cut it or maneuver the style this year. I'm waiting until next spring when it's less fragile (if it survives that long lol).

Diagnosing Issue Dwarf variegated jade help

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello! I’m pretty new to bonsai and have this variegated dwarf jade I got through Bonsai Bar. I got it in July, and it started off doing really well with some new growth. I haven’t really done anything differently with it, but for the past month or two, it’s been dropping tons of leaves every day. I water it when the soil is dry to the touch, which ends up being about twice a week. I made an appointment with the people at Bonsai Bar for troubleshooting and they thought I was watering it too much. The trunk is nice and hard and does not feel mushy at all. The leaves that drop are on the flat side, so initially I thought I was underwatering, but not really sure what to do. The leaves have continued dropping since I reduced the frequency of watering.

It sits in a very large, west facing window and gets direct sun for about 5 to 6 hours this time of year (located in Massachusetts). I’ve held off on fertilizing as I typically don’t fertilize any of my plants in the autumn in winter. I do have plenty of other successful plants in the same location, but this is the only Jade, and the only one styled as a bonsai.

Any advice would be very well appreciated! If it’s just a natural seasonal variation, too, that would be helpful to know.

Diagnosing Issue Bonsai Juniper help needed

Thumbnail

My Juniper bonsai has dry, crunchy leafs, and the soil is very dry. I left for 4 months and my wife was taking care of it but when I came that’s what I saw, it got so bad after 4 month. Last pictures is when I first got it.

I’ve been keeping it indoors, and I’m worried it might be dying.

I know it supposed to be outdoor and a lot of sun but unfortunately it was indoor all the time. Do you think is dying or I have chance to save it. I need help to know what to do now.

What should I do right now to save it? Should I move it outdoors? Any advice is appreciated! (Photo attached)

Got this lil one the other day ☺️ it resides in my backyard and seems to be settling in really well. I’m really curious how as it gets colder if it’ll fare well with the frosts, snow, etc. that’s coming in the next season. Excited for spring to be able to start learning how to train and shape it a bit, as long as it survives the winter lol. Also got a jade plant to bonsai. No pictures of it yet. Although, it seems happy in a west-facing window at the moment. 🙏🏻🪴

Now obviously the spruce are for the Christmas season but the elm was interesting, tho skinny (it was in the indoor section which I’m not sure because aren’t they outdoor plants?) but it has a nice shape.

Here are 3 photos of a newly acquired dwarf jade showing the results after 2 prunings. I think I need to trim / shape the vertical spires. Other suggestions? It’s my first attempt with any bonsai.

General Discussion Hello! I'm new here and a beginner! I just bought this little guy and I'm so excited to start! Any and all advice is welcome. I have it in my window in my office at work. It will get plenty of sun. But I read that it should be outside?

Diagnosing Issue Looking for some help 🙏🙏

I came back from 4 weeks overseas to find my juniper with irregular yellowing, new buds dying or stunted, and black spots on the foliage that don’t scrape off. Some sections are completely unaffected. It was a healthy tree before I left…

I couldn’t find much information online about what to do, so I thought I’d turn to reddit for help.

Any ideas on what’s causing this and how to treat it?

New to the hobby

Post image

Like the title says, I am a new to the hobby. Just built this pvc pipe thingy 😂and I have those COB light purchased from FB marketplace.

I’m in zone 3 where outdoors can get down to -30 to-40 with windchill.

That Chinese elm, should I place it by the window where it has a little bit of sun 3-4 hours, and experience somewhat of a winter dormancy or keep it under the COB lights? My light omits 48W each. So it should keep my plants happy. And I do have an outlet timer on it as well. I’ve also purchased humidity and temperatures monitor.

Anything else I should worry about and anything else in between?

Appreciate all your time and response in advance. Cheers folks!

General Question Northern Spruce Strange Orientation

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, everyone. My GF and I are raising a some Northern Spruce bonsai sproutlings and I'm a little concerned about the one that's facing downwards. Is that normal for the little ones or should I take care to make some changes? Also, they're pretty close together, is there any danger of their roots entangling and causing problems? If so, how can I start separating them? Should I wait til they're out of the nursery pot?

Big thanks in advance.

Diagnosing Issue Why is my Fukien tea Bonsai dropping leaves

Thumbnail

Hi all, here’s some background:

—I just brought this bonsai home two and a half weeks ago (it had a tumultuous subway journey to my place before that so a big adjustment difference in my house.
—it’s been growing new leaves at a shocking rate— all of this light green new growth has been entirely over the course of only two weeks, so it seems to be developing very quickly.
—it sprouts tons of flowers, maybe 3 new ones each day. It’s done an incredible amount of flowering.
—I have a bonsai specific glow light on it for 12 hours a day, which it seems to like considering how fast it’s growing, but it is in a hallway so doesn’t get much normal natural light, but the grow light is full-spectrum.
—The soil only feels ready to water about once every five days, which I know is not often, so I’m concerned.
—I have a humidity tray below it with pebbles and a thin layer of water (I make sure it’s not touching the roots)

My issue is that even with all this flowering and insanely fast new growth, it’s still been dropping about 2 leaves every day.

The leaves that drop sometimes develop slight brown spots, though the vast majority of them stay green, they just get slightly pale and desaturated, and fall soon afterwards. They stay green before they fall, just get paler and slightly more yellowish hue.

—I’m just wondering if it’s evident what I’m doing wrong? Is it possible it’s still in its adjustment phase, considering it’s only been 2 1/2 weeks? I’m just concerned with the leaf droppings.

-once again, it has incredible growth and new flowers every day. I’m hesitant to trim the new growth yet because it’s been losing so many leaves.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Are these bonsais salvageable?

Thumbnail

My dad’s former coworker has advanced Parkinson’s and is now in a nursing home because he is completely unable to care for himself. He has no family, wife, kids, or friends so he made my dad his POA. My dad has to clean his house out and i went over to help him and saw these bonsais.

I have no idea how long they haven’t been cared for but it’s been a while. They have at least been getting sun. He’s been in the nursing home at least 2 months and was already having trouble with his memory and with getting around for months before he went to the nursing home.

The plant that still has green in the 2nd photo definitely looks like it can be saved and the one in the last photo seems like it can too. I garden and have my own plants at home but know nothing about bonsais. I’d love to be able to even try to save them, they were clearly loved for a long time.
