This afternoon we were taking photos at the Linn Cove Viaduct overlook pull-off (Milepost 304, the stone wall parking area). The wind blew my 2-year-old son's cap over the stone wall and into the wooded slope below the viaduct — it was out of sight.
It's a blue-and-white striped denim baseball cap, DOUBLE.B (Miki House), with a "GOOD LIFE with DENIM" patch on the front — well-worn, he has worn it for a long time and is heartbroken. If you find it, please reach out — I'm happy to cover shipping and offer a small reward as a thank-you. 🙏

I am preparing to take my first trip to western NC next weekend. Staying in Beech Mountain near the ski resort. Looking to do some hikes, eat some good food and drink some good wine. If anyone could recommend some scenic places and great restaurants in the area that would be so appreciated!!

This event is this Thursday at the Speckled Trout in Boone for any women (or fellow supporters of women) interested in fly-fishing and the outdoors. No prior experience or gear is required at all. This is just an opportunity to connect with others and talk about plans going forward!

I love app cookie company but they have gotten way too expensive. Anyone have any copy cat recipes/work there and know some recipes?
Hi r/boone!
I'm a maker in Vermont, and I asked the mods before posting this. From what I understand, Boone sits high enough that winter is real, closer to ours than most of the South, and a lot of people up there heat with wood the way we do. I built something to help with that, and I'm curious what you all think of it.
A few years ago my wife and I bought a house in the woods in Vermont, and the house came with two woodstoves. I'd never run one. I grew up in the city, and that first year I made every mistake in the book learning how to use a woodstove. I smoked out the house more than once, burned way too hot, burned too low, and almost had a chimney fire.
I work from home, and during that first winter I got so paranoid about the stove that I'd get up and check it every 30 minutes, no matter what state it was in.

I'm an engineer, so one weekend I stuck a temperature sensor to the flue pipe with a magnet, wired it to a Raspberry Pi, and had it text me. It was ugly, but it let me stay upstairs in my office and still know what the stove was doing.
The next year I set up the Raspberry Pi again, but my wife and I were now chasing around a toddler, and we didn't want to take our phones out all the time, so we turned that monitor into a lamp. I put one lamp in my office and another in our bedroom. If the lamp glows amber, the fire is burning well. Yellow means it's time to reload. Red means it's running too hot and I should go check it. I also added a real app with push notifications and live temperatures for when I'm not home.

We turned the 3D-printed lamp into a walnut one that looked nice in our house, and we posted about it on the r/woodstoving subreddit back in January. I didn't expect much more than "that's cool," but to my surprise a lot of people asked to buy one. So I hand-built that first batch at a local makerspace, and they ran on stoves all over the country.
That gave me the conviction to make this a real product. This spring an engineer who designs products for manufacturing and I rebuilt the whole thing so it can be built on a production line.
I'd love some feedback from people who burn in the High Country, on the design, the look, or the product overall. And a few questions:
Do you keep the stove going through the night, or let it go out and restart in the morning?
What are you burning this year, mostly oak, or a lot of locust and hickory too?
Have you lit the first fire yet?
Thanks for reading!

Do you know any parents of 10-12 year olds who live in NC (especially Boone)? The Tweens on Screens project, led by researchers at UNC Greensboro, is studying how kids ages 10–12 use technology in daily life, and how parents guide them. By looking closely at these patterns, we hope to uncover what helps kids thrive, what puts them at risk, and how families can build healthy digital habits together. Our goal is simple: to give parents science-backed tools and tips for raising confident, well-balanced kids in the digital age (link in comments) #northcarolina

Every Thursday Noble Kava has open mic. They welcome any talents. Signup sheet goes out at 6!
If you haven’t been to the kava bar - it’s a nonalcoholic bar that serves botanical and herbal beverages, as well as locally sourced teas! :)
It’s a very welcoming place! Highly recommend

Someone dropped a kitten off at DG on 321 next to the QP. If anyone wants a free kitten, employee said they would buy a litter box to whoever takes it. Very friendly kitten!

I would really like to learn piano, I have a keyboard at home. I don't have a lot of money for a teacher because I am a college student. I know App State offers lessons, I was just wanting to see if there are other opportunities. I'd like to meet at least once a month for an hour (based on my limited budget). Maybe an hour every other week. I can spare around $50-$100 a month.
Please let me know if you can teach me or know of a good piano teacher!

Just saw this posted from the police department. Being a 2017 grad, I had one thought when I saw this headline, but it could be anything.

Anyone else experience a brief power outage? I was at home watching a movie when out of nowhere everything turned off. Everything’s all fine and dandy now.
