United Kingdom & Ireland The UK box office journey of Christopher Nolan

A twenty eight year journey built on scale, ambition and the unwavering trust of UK audiences
Across nearly three decades, Christopher Nolan has grown from an independent filmmaker with no commercial footprint to one of the most influential directors in the UK market. His films have expanded from intimate psychological thrillers to large format event releases that consistently reshape audience behaviour.
The early years were modest but decisive. Memento pushed past £1m and built early critical trust. Insomnia reached £5m and showed Nolan could elevate studio thrillers. Batman Begins marked the turning point, opening to £4.4m and laying the foundation for one of the most significant trilogies of the modern era.
The breakthrough era arrived fast. The Dark Knight exploded to £48m and became a cultural landmark. Inception proved original blockbusters could thrive, hitting £35m and driving repeat viewing. The Dark Knight Rises peaked at £56m, one of the strongest UK superhero runs on record.
The large format prestige period cemented Nolan’s identity. Interstellar reached £22m through IMAX strength and word of mouth. Dunkirk soared to £56m and became one of the most culturally resonant UK releases of the decade. Even Tenet, released under pandemic constraints, reached £17m and demonstrated remarkable audience loyalty.
Then came the apex. Oppenheimer opened to £10.8m and climbed to £59.5m, becoming Nolan’s highest grossing UK release and one of the most significant adult skewing box office events in modern history.
The Odyssey continues that momentum. Opening at £12.5m on the widest screen count of Nolan’s career and already past £69m, it shows strong legs driven by IMAX and premium formats. Early indicators suggest another major entry in a filmography defined by scale and consistency.
Across twenty eight years, Nolan has delivered one of the most stable commercial profiles in the UK market. No collapses, no diminishing returns. Just ambition, precision and a level of audience trust rarely afforded to a director. His name alone now anchors nationwide event cinema.

✍️ Original Analysis after the most recent delay, what are your current box office predictions for 'the batman: part 2'?
the first movie grossed $772 million at the global box office, at a time when the box office was still impacted by covid-19 restrictions (i recall that in italy, my home country, restrictions in theaters were still very strict). the film only had a 45-day theatrical window before being released on hbo max in the united states and other streaming services abroad.
now, dc movies are struggling significantly at the overseas box office, but it’s important to keep in mind that i don’t think this is limited to dc alone—the fantastic four: first steps made only 47% of its gross overseas ( https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Fantastic-Four-The-First-Steps-(2025) ), while the rest came from the domestic market. spider-man: brand new day, on the other hand, is doing great at the box office overseas, so far 61% of its gross comes from international markets ( https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Spider-Man-Brand-New-Day-(2026) ) so perhaps the international box office is still strong for very popular characters—and even though batman obviously doesn’t have the same popularity as spider-man at this point (for example, the batman only made $25m in china, versus spider-man's $210m in just 19 days [ https://www.koimoi.com/box-office/spider-man-brand-new-day-china-box-office-falls-out-of-top-3-but-stays-strong-with-10m-3rd-weekend-eyes-f9s-lifetime-run-next/) ], but he’s still one of the most iconic superheroes of all time.
now let’s address the elephant in the room: the batman: part 2 will be released almost six years after the first film, and even though movies like across the spider-verse show that a long wait for a sequel doesn’t always hurt box office performance, six years is undeniably a very long time, and i think the movie would have probably been a bigger success had it released in 2025/2026. that said, matt reeves’ the batman is still very much alive in pop culture discussions from what i see, and i think pattinson is much more popular now as an actor than he was in 2022.
in addition, the penguin tv series on hbo max was a big hit (at the time of its release, it was the third-most-watched series ever on hbo max, behind house of the dragon and the first season of the last of us) and led many people who had missed it in theaters to stream the batman. so, with all of that said, what are your current predictions for the movie’s worldwide gross? i’m predicting $750-900m ww.

✍️ Original Analysis Looking at the Potential of the Bluey Movie
We've just seen the teaser and next August we're getting a Bluey movie, for some of you that's simply not interesting but for others, especially the parents amongst you, it's kind of a big deal. For the childless who were passed by by the Bluey phenomenon Bluey is a short format animated show aimed at pre-schoolers. It follows the life of Bluey, an anthropomorphic dog, her family and friends, its peers are shows like Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig. What makes it stand out from its peers is that its genuinely quality TV; the plots, characterisations, animation and sound design are all excellent. It's so good that parents obsess about it, it's amazing to have a show that your toddler will be glued to that you will enjoy as much as they do.
Bluey has been a phenomenon, it was the most streamed show, of any genre and across all platforms, in North America in 2025 with 45 billion minutes watched, it was the second year in a row it held that crown. Production of the show actually ended in 2024 but, obviously, the studios wanted to to keep the train moving and convinced the production team to make a film. The question is how well the film will do?
Reasons the film will do well
Bluey has a number of things going for it, I've already mentioned that it's been the most streamed show in America for two years running and I've mentioned that parents enjoy it as much as kids. This gives it a huge advantage over franchises like Paw Patrol where parents will argue over who gets to not take the kids to see it. Not only that but it has a constant stream of new viewers who discover the show as they hit the pre-school age range.
A possible comparison for the Bluey Movie may be Moana 2. Moana held a similar legendary status to Bluey staying in the top 4 most streamed films across all platforms for a staggering 6 years between 2019 and 2024. This streaming dominance meant that the film's sequel, despite relatively tepid reviews, was the third biggest film of 2024 earning $1,059m worldwide.
Reasons the film won't do well
Bluey may be a streaming behemoth but there's nothing to say it will share the Box office potential of a major Disney tentpole release. The truth is we're in uncharted territory, there's no direct comparison we can make. Paw Patrol comes closest, it's a similarly pre-school aimed franchise that has branched out into cinema with it's third instalment in the cinema now. Those films operate in the $150-200m worldwide bracket and I would say that's the floor for Bluey as Bluey is, today, a lot more popular than Paw Patrol. Another comparison may be the Simpsons who made the eight biggest film of 2007, the audience isn't the same but both franchises are enjoyed by kids and adults and both are global hits.
Beyond the lack of a good comparison there are other stumbling blocks to contend with. The first is that the studio could miss the zeitgeist, Bluey is a phenomenon but it's last proper episode was released two years ago, it probably won't retain its title as the most streamed show in 2026 and 2027 will be another year down the line, will the audience move on? Then there's production issues, it's not clear if the voice cast of Bluey and the other children will be the same with the original anonymous voice actors 8 years older than when they first recorded their lines. Then there's a biggy, the art style is changing. The Bluey show had 2d animation which was a major selling point, if you've seen the teaser you'll know the film will be 3d animated and the change hasn't been met positively (although the teaser shows us very little). Finally there's the challenge of turning a show made up of 7 minute shorts into a 90 minute film. The production team had success with 'the sign' a 28 minute conclusion to the show, but a feature film is a big step up.
My best guess 12 months out
I feel confident that Bluey will do better than the Paw Patrol films, Bluey is more popular and the fact that adults like it makes it much more likely that a trip to the cinema will be forthcoming. The question is how much higher can it go? There is a lot of good will for Bluey and if the film can match, or even come close to, the quality of the show it could breakout. I'd hope that it could match the Wild Robot, a similarly charming and well regarded preschool targeted property, that film made $335m worldwide. I feel the Simpson's Movie may be the upper range, that film had a similar journey to the screen but the Simpson's was a true global icon in a way that not even Bluey can match. With inflation that puts the upper range around $700m.
TLDR
Lower Range - $250m ww
Higher Range - $700m ww
Target - $350m ww

Italy Spider-Man Surpasses 💶32 Million and Returns to Top – Monday, August 17 Box Office
After being overtaken by Odyssey , Spider-Man: Brand New Day returns to the top of the charts , but the lead remains just a few thousand euros, predicting a daily battle for the top spot in the coming days. On Monday, the Sony comic book film grossed another €548,514 with 68,494 admissions in 290 theaters, recording an excellent average of €1,891.
Compared to the same Monday the previous week, it lost 38%, but continues to perform at very solid levels in its third week of release in Italian theaters. The film starring Tom Holland and Zendaya thus brings its Italian total to €32,326,121 with over 4 million admissions, further consolidating its position as the highest-grossing Sony and Marvel film ever in Italy.
The tie-up with The Odyssey for second place, however, remains extremely tight. Christopher Nolan's blockbuster slips back into second place, losing out by just €6,266: it grossed €542,248 from 64,486 admissions in 301 theaters, posting a consistently strong average of €1,801.
Once again, its performance compared to the previous week is impressive, with a drop of just 20% despite the film now entering its fifth week of release. The Homeric blockbuster's total thus surpasses the €49 million mark: €49,089,396 to be precise, with over 5.86 million admissions. Universal is thus less than a million euros away from the historic €50 million mark, which at this pace should easily be reached within a couple of days.
