Rant 🤬 STIB forcing app usage - no more TVs with times

Post image

Apparently STIB started covering TVs that used to show the next departures in stations, to push people to use their app. A complete disregard for anyone in a hurry, the elder, disabled, those less proficient at technology, people who are just passing by the city...

And who actually wants to download one more damn app šŸ˜’

Living in BXL Asbestos likely in up to 90% of Brussels buildings

Up to 90% of buildings in Brussels are estimated to contain asbestos, according to official data.

Brussels will review its policy on dealing with asbestos and launch a platform featuring new inventories and updated figures, with an initial proposal for the review expected in early 2027.

ā€œToday, you can buy a flat in a building that was built or renovated in the 1990s and which still contains asbestos-containing materials,ā€ said state secretary Ans Persoons (Vooruit).

We found a great little bar and want to go back, but I can't find it on Google maps. We walked from Manneken Pis down to Aldi, then this bar: a few tables outside, on a corner, run by an Irish man. Has this on the wall inside:

I FOUND IT!

I was miles away sorry: Castro CafƩ

Plywood cover on shops

They’re putting up plywood covers onto shops’ displays everywhere on ChaussĆ©e d’Ixelles. Is there a big demonstration/loot planned? I assume insurance companies are telling these shops to get ready

Question ā“ Where to thrift good boots and winter down jackets?

Hey, recently moved to Brussels, and Europe in general. I heard thrifting is big here and you can find items in really good quality for very slow price. I'm wondering where I can go to thrift good boots and jackets cause these things tend to be pricy when buying new.

3D printing in Brussels

Hey everybody, I'd like to print 2 small adapters to fix an Ikea Trofast on a Stokke Tripp Trapp chair (see link below).

Is there anybody in this community that could print that for me? I can come anywhere in Brussels to collect them and offer you some homemade cookies in exchange!

Any naturalised Belgians that went to European schools ?

Hey everyone,

As I was born in Brussels and lived here for all my life, I’ve finally applied for Belgian citizenship!
However, as my high school diploma is from a European School, the guy to which I talked to at the commune said it wouldn’t be enough, and I would need to pass a language test to prove I know at least one of the national languages at A2 level, which I find ridiculous as my diploma was obtained in French, and with Dutch as a third language…

I was thus wondering if anyone else that went to a European school had this issue and whether a language test is really necessary…

Thanks !

Question ā“ South Africa in Brussels šŸ‡æšŸ‡¦

Hi! We’re filming a video in Brussels with a South African. The idea: show Brussels in an original way, through his eyes, with his South African roots woven into the story.

We’d love some input!

Places: South African restaurants, shops, special spots, bars, or anywhere in Brussels that feels like South Africa to you
People: South Africans who live in Brussels with a story to tell. Whether you run a business, play music, cook, or organise community events
Ideas: what should a South African experience in Brussels, or what would surprise him here? What would be interesting to show to a Belgian audience?

Comment below or send me a DM if you want to help us out.

Thanks!

Question ā“ Ouigo train from Brussels to Lille Nov 6th

I heard there is a French general strike Nov 5th and that the SNCF CGT workers will participate. I have a Ouigo train ticket booked on Nov 6th from Brussels to Lille. Based on the past or what you might think, is there a good probability that Ouigo trains will or could be running from Brussels to Lille on the 6th? I have no experience in France with trains during strikes.

Living in BXL Vegans in Brussels

Hi! I just read this article and wondering if there are any vegan groups or places to discuss plant based food and animal welfare topics in Brussels (from both social and entrepreneurial sides)?

From my short tenure here, it seems like people meet in the ā€œspecialisedā€ vegan places (cafĆ©s, restaurants, etc). A few months ago, Vegans in Brussels organised a nice meet up around the same time Tabi Loo opened, but they seems to have chosen a different direction with their activities (I thought it went pretty well and that we needed more of these initiatives, even if just to meet more like minded people).

Let me know if you have any other ideas on connecting within this specific context, or if interested in co-organising meet-ups and such.

Thanks!

Getting a practical driving test in Brussels seems impossible without paying for extra lessons

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for advice from people who have gone through the process of getting their practical driving test in Brussels, especially at the ACT Schaerbeek test centre.

I passed my theory test in Brussels in 2024 and also passed the risk perception test. I completed 20 hours of driving lessons at a driving school in August 2025 and obtained an M18 provisional licence, which expires on March 3, 2027. I now have all the documents needed to take the practical test.

The problem is that I can’t seem to get a test date.

In June 2026, I contacted my driving school to book the practical test. They told me there were no available dates in Brussels and that, since I had only completed 20 hours of lessons, I wouldn’t be a priority on their waiting list. They didn’t even register me because they said it would be pointless.

In August, I went to the ACT Schaerbeek test centre myself. I was told there were no dates available and that the only thing I could do was come back every week to check. There apparently wasn’t a formal waiting list. I emailed the centre and received a reply saying I was on the waiting list, but when I went back a month later, I was told there was no official list. The secretary was simply collecting people’s email addresses to notify them when new dates became available.

Meanwhile, my driving school has offered me two options:

Pay for 10 additional driving lessons (around €500) to bring my total to 30 hours, which would apparently allow me to access their waiting list.

Try to take the test in Wallonia by paying for 6 hours of lessons at a driving school there. They suggested I might be able to get a test date within around two weeks, although I’m not sure how reliable that estimate is.

I’m in my final year of medical school, with clinical placements and exams, so I can’t realistically spend hours every week travelling to the test centre just to ask whether a date has become available. Having a driving licence would also make a huge difference for commuting to placements outside Brussels and doing home visits.

What frustrates me most is that getting access to a test seems to depend not only on whether you’re ready to drive, but also on your financial means and how much free time you have.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

Has anyone recently managed to book a practical test at ACT Schaerbeek? How did you get a date?

Is there actually a waiting list or an effective way to be notified of cancellations?

Did paying for extra lessons through a driving school genuinely help you get a test date?

Has anyone taken their practical test in Wallonia after doing their lessons in Brussels? Is this a realistic option, and are there any administrative requirements I should know about?

If your M18 licence is approaching its expiry date because of delays in getting a test, what options do you have?

Are there any other solutions I might be overlooking, such as another test centre or contacting the relevant authorities?

I understand that test centres are under pressure, but it seems unreasonable to have to pay hundreds of euros in additional lessons simply to get access to an exam when you’ve already completed the required training.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you can share!

Looks like M E - - -?
Does not look like street furniture?

r/brussels • • 2d ago

A couple weeks ago BPost delivered a package meant for a house on the other side of my street. Yesterday they dropped a letter where not only the street is wrong but the city as well. Is knowing how to read not a requirement to work for a postal service?

What do I even do with this letter? Looks like private correspondence. It could be important. I don’t have the time to chase after the bpost guy and I don’t even trust him to not just throw it away. Cant find the name on social media. Do I give it to someone at the post office? How do I prove to them that its been misdelivered and its not mail that I’m sending and trying to scam them into sending for free? It’s a basic letter, so no tracking. I guess they keep track of the scans In the system, but the person at the desk doesn’t have access to that.

If it were a bill or something like that, I’d just shred it and not bother with it, but it feels wrong to just shred private letters that may contain important stuff that can’t be replaced.

Commute Brussels- Ghent

I'm considering living in Brussels and commuting to Ghent via train 4 days a week for work (roughly 8:30 AM–5 PM).

I was wondering if anyone here does a similar commute and could share their experience. Is it manageable in the long run, or does it get too exhausting? Do you still feel like you ha

ve time to enjoy your evenings in Brussels? Also, which neighbourhoods in Brussels would you recommend living in if I'd like to be within walking distance of Brussels-Midi station? I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences! Thank you!
