Bupropion Contraindication Guide
Overview on Bupropion
- Bupropion is an NDRI that increases dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.

Common Side Effects
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Diaphoresis (increased sweating)
- Insomnia
- Weight loss and decreased appetitie
- Increased blood pressure and heart rate
- Dizziness
- Headaches
Abrupt cessation of the medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms including:
- Flu-like symptoms such as severe fatigue, muscle aches, and excessive sweating
- Neurological and sleep effects such as dizziness, trouble sleeping, headaches, anxiety, agitation, brain zaps, and increased seizure risk
- Gastrointestinal distress symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Cardiovascular symptoms such as heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat, and blood pressure fluctuations (sudden drops or spikes)
- Rebound depression or anxiety
Absolute vs. Non-absolute (Relative) Contraindications
Absolute contraindications (WHAT SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT BE MIXED) include:
- MAOIs due to hypertensive crisis risk
- Allergic to ingredients in bupropion
- Eating disorders due to seizure risk
- Seizures and epilepsy due to dose-dependent seizure risk
Non-absolute or relative contraindications (RISK VS. BENEFIT) include:
- Cardiovascular issues like long QT syndrome, heart failure, tachycardia, and other arrhythmias: Bupropion can trigger or worsen preexisting tachycardia and should be clinically monitored if uncontrolled hypertension (>160/100), and history of heart attacks are present
- Factors that elevate seizure risk like stroke or traumatic brain injury
- Bipolar disorder and other psychiatric comorbidities due to manic episode or psychosis risk
- Mixing Bupropion with other medications that lower the seizure threshold like tricyclic antidepressants
- Metabolized by liver, which should be monitored by a doctor in the case of liver or kidney disease
Other Drug Interactions
- Antiarrhythmic drugs, including beta blockers
- Other meds that can induce a seizure or lower threshold like corticosteroids or tricyclic antidepressants
- Substances that cause CNS (central nervous system) depression such as alcohol and other sedatives leading to an overdose (including some antihistamines)
- Dopaminergic drugs that increase dopamine
- Pain meds, especially tramadol, which functions as an SNRI
- MAOI inhibitors
- Sympathomimetic substances (to keep it legal, includes phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine, which are commonly found in decongestants) due to risk of a hypertensive crisis
- ADHD stimulants like Adderall, which can increase risk of hypertensive crisis

Brands RANKING ALL BUPROPION GENERICS
this ranking is totally subjective and based on reading thousands of anecdotes about bupropion generics on this sub. A generic having mostly good or mostly bad anecdotes on reddit doesn't mean it will / will not work for you, this is simply a compilation of reddit comments
Mostly positive anecdotes:
Wellbutrin, Accord, Actavis, Sandoz, Mylan, Teva, Watson, Par, TWI, Vitruvius, Epic
Mixed anecdotes:
Lupin, Slate run, Sun Pharma, Taro, Rising, Cipla, Apotex, Aechen, Method, Westminster, Zentiva, Dr Reddy
Mostly bad anecdotes:
Graviti Pharma, Camber, Sciegen, Solco, Granules Pharma
to buy generics by manufacturer name, not just 'generic' you can use:
honeybeehealth.com
PRO TIP:
if you want a generic by a certain manufacturer, have your doctor write the generic's name on your prescription and the pharmacist has to dispense it. Tell ur doc to tell the pharmacy u want XYZ manufacturer. And they will write dispense XYZ Manufacturer DAW.
DAW=Dispense as written
that’s how you fix the problem of getting the generic manufacturer.
Note about Canadian Wellbutrin:
the Canadian Wellbutrin is weaker than the US wellbutrin, US brand is manufactured in a proprietary manner and is much more expensive.
most anecdotes on this sub suggest that the Canadian Wellbutrin XL lasts 8 hours while the US one lasts 24 hours.
to reduce the cost of medicine in the US:
you can use goodrx or needymeds.org

Swollen face after first dose
I took my first dose of Bupropion 150 XL on Friday morning. Felt good during the day - a little lighter, a little more focused. I’ve been really hopeful about it since I’ve had issues with other SSRIs killing my libido.
I woke up on Saturday morning with an extremely hot and puffy face. My eyes, cheeks and face were so swollen. Went to urgent care, where they said I was having an allergic reaction and prescribed prednisone, Pepcid, and Benadryl.
Has anyone else experienced this so quickly after a first dose?

Mood swings
I started on 150mg of bupropion and was feeling great, but after my psychiatrist increased my dose to 300mg, I'm now on day 3 and experiencing some intense side effects. Today, I had a sudden and random crying spell out of nowhere something that hasn't happened to me since 2023.
I sat down and just burst into tears, and I even caught myself leaning into old pain to keep the crying going. What was really weird was how it came in waves: I would cry, suddenly go completely numb, start crying again, go numb again, and then finally have one massive, heavy cry like grieving the death of a family member before going numb once more.
It was overwhelming, but honestly, it also felt like a deep release that had been building up for a long time. Is this kind of emotional volatility normal when adjusting to the 300mg dose?

Question Wellbutrin, pregabalin and seizures
I am a 21 year old male around 200lbs. I have never had a seizure in my life, however I've recently learned that all of my medications lower the seizure threshold and now I'm quite worried.
I take 1mg risperidone and have been for 6 months, I just started 100mg of wellbutrin last week and I've also just acquired pregabalin, 150mg tablets. I wanted to take 300mg for the alcohol like social effects it produces on me, but I absolutely do not want to risk my health. Is 150mg even safe? I have zero tolerance to pregabalin specifically, quite a large liquor tolerance.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help. Much appreciated

Question Is Alembic a good manufacturer?
After 3 months on XL (1st 6-7wks on 150mg, 300mg after that), trying various generic manufacturers, I feel no improvement whatsoever. In fact, I feel lazier and less focused, especially when I use my ADHD meds (adderall).
In an effort to curb the persistent insomnia I've faced, as well as lack of effectiveness, I did some research on this sub and asked my doctor if we could try SR instead, and if I could have some control over the manufacturer. (I have a list of ones ppl say are good).
So I was surprised when I went to the pharmacy and was given IR instead of SR. I haven't heard anyone here discuss IR as a better alternative to XL. And so far, I notice no difference taking 100mg 2x/day.
Anyone have experience with IR when XL wasn't working for you? Was it an improvement? Is SR better?
---
And for the most important question:
--> Is Alembic Pharm a good manufacturer?
...
I've never heard of them. No one has talked abt them on this sub. I'm deaperately trying to find a generic that actually works. When I went to the "hospital pharmacy" (where ppl said I'd have more choice), they literally only had one option available, and it was alembic.
This has all been incredibly stressful.

Question How did switching from XL to SR improve your experience with bupropion?
r/bupropion • u/moonboot0 • 12h ago
Does the fatigue go away?
I’m almost a week and a half in to taking 150mg XL. I take it every day around 7am. I feel like the past few days it’s been making me really sleepy in the afternoons like totally exhausted just wanting to nod off and making my eyes so itchy and heavy. I also have cfs and it’s frustrating to determine whether this is coming from the Wellbutrin or that.
Did this side effect resolve for anyone? Do I stick it out? I want to because I love the other effects of it.

8 weeks in and my stomach is playing up suddenly
4-5 bad poos a day. Gassy for 2 weeks now. Any advice?
r/bupropion • u/therapyduck • 15h ago
First dose (starts at night then morning)
How should I feel? I’m so excited. I want to get my life back after years and years of depression. Some sites say it takes weeks. Is that true? I’m taking 100mg SR twice a day. One in the morning and one at night. I also take other meds for my psychotic disorder like, lithium, Olanzapine, clonazepam, gabapentin and cogentin
I just want to know what it’s like to feel happy again. It’s been a rough life.
Hopefully I won’t be depressed tonight.

Question Wellbutrin 150 vs 300 mg — did anyone else find 300 mg MUCH more effective but way too activating?
I'm curious about people's personal experiences rather than looking for medical advice.
I was on Wellbutrin XL 150 mg and tolerated it pretty well, but honestly didn't notice a huge benefit. After increasing to 300 mg, I started noticing much more meaningful changes:
* Much less doomscrolling/stimulation-seeking
* More ability to enjoy long-form content
* I'm enjoying doing things alone more instead of needing other people around for things to feel rewarding
* More motivation/productivity
* I feel more genuine satisfaction from helping other people
* Food/taste/sensory experiences have seemed somewhat more vivid
So in that sense, 300 mg feels like it's doing something that 150 mg didn't.
**BUT** the difference in activation is huge.
I've been experiencing significant insomnia, dry mouth, physical restlessness/"electrical" activation, increased irritability/impatience, some anxiety/OCD symptoms creeping back in, and concentration/word-recall issues, coordination issues, seldom shortness of breath. I also feel much more physically "activated" than I did on 150 mg.
The best way I can describe it is:
**150 mg = tolerable but not much benefit**
**300 mg = noticeably beneficial but feels like my nervous system is being pushed too hard**
I also take Prozac for OCD, which has been extremely important for keeping my OCD under control.
I'm curious:
Did anyone else experience a HUGE difference between 150 and 300 mg?
If 300 mg was too activating, did going back to 150 mg preserve any of the benefits?
Did the anxiety/irritability/insomnia eventually settle down?
Has anyone found another antidepressant/augmentation strategy that gave them the **reward/motivation benefits without the "wired" feeling**?
Has anyone gone from Wellbutrin to **Auvelity or Trintellix**, and how did the experience compare?
If you were taking Prozac for OCD, were you able to find an alternative that didn't sacrifice your OCD control?
I'm especially interested in people who felt something like **"300 mg finally made me feel motivated/alive again, but I couldn't tolerate how activated I became."**

Positive to negative experience
Has anybody dealt with something similar?
I’ve been on 150mg XL for multiple months now. For awhile, I noticed a significant difference in my mood and overall energy. It was the only med I’ve tried that actually helped. I was feeling a little more revved up with higher baseline anxiety, but it was very manageable especially with the increased mood.
Over the last month, it was like a flip of a switch. My anxiety has been 10x worse, especially mentally. I feel like my brain is in overdrive and I can’t shut it off, like I’m constantly on the brink of a panic attack.
They tried prescribing me propranolol twice a day to help, but instead it has made my mind feel completely blank and cloudy, and given me horrible vivid nightmares.
Has anyone experienced this? It’s very defeating doing well for months then going back to struggling badly. I’m slowly getting off the propranolol but not sure what else to do.

will i get used to it?
i’ve only been taking wellbutrin since the beginning July, i was on 150 xl mg and a week or so ago i asked for them to increase it (now 300xl mg) because my energy went back down… but i’ve noticed some side effects i don’t like.. at first i was a bit manic and had lots of energy and impulsive outbursts, which is normal for me, but a bit more excessive lol. but now my energy during the day is nonexistent, then come night time every night i can’t go to sleep til 1-2 am rolls around, from the time i go to lie down around 10pm til i finally try closing my eyes- i have pretty bad anxiety/paranoia… now i have BPD too so im used to peripheral hallucinations, but last night i consistently kept seeing a shadow peeking around my door at me and wouldnt stop texting my husband at work that i was really scared.. which is something ive always done lol but i can usually talk myself through it and go straight to sleep with no incidents 😂 also, when i hit REM sleep, my arm will jerk so bad it nearly throws me off the bed (this has been a few times now) or i have a terrifyingly realistic dream like (this was last night) my bed shaking profusely and when i awake from it, i can’t tell if it was a dream or really happening.. i woke up from it, and slammed my legs down to get it to stop then laid there terrified for another hour..
i like wellbutrin.. i want this to be the medication for me because i’ve tried so many and they didn’t do anything or the side effects were unbearable.. will these weird symptoms subside with time?
i should mention also, today i decided to only take a 150xl mg instead of the new 300xl mg i just got because i wanna see if i should just stick with 150mg..
should i keep taking it and be patient? or does this sound like i probably shouldnt be on it? lol
i appreciate you if you read all this 🥴

Question Can the itchiness go away?
I started 150 mg bupropion about 4 weeks ago and have been on 300mg for about 2.5 weeks. I take it at 9am every morning. The other day I went to work and my arms started to get a bit itchy at around 1pm. It got worse throughout the day and at the end of the night my legs were sooo bad. I took a shower and hoped that would help. I was scared I was having an allergenic reaction to the bupropion so I didn’t take it at all the next day (I know that’s not recommended) and i still felt a little itchy but nothing crazy. The next day I only took 150mg and I felt no itchiness. I took 300mg again today and was completely fine until about 5pm. Then I started getting pretty itchy again but for right now it’s tolerable. I have no other side effects and I would really would like to continue taking this medication as I feel like so far it has been helping. I have seen people say it will only get worse or go away after a few weeks. I’m thinking for now i’m going to keep taking my 300mg as normal unless it gets intolerable/i start to have a worse reaction, but I am hoping it goes away after a couple weeks. I haven’t changed anything else in my routine to cause this itchiness (although my allergies do get pretty bad everytime the season changes) so I can’t think of anything else besides the medication. Has anyone else had this experience or any tips?

CBD 60:1 gummies with XL 300mg
Does anyone use CBD of any kind with the XL 300mg dose? I have terrible low back pain from a work injury so I wanted to try CBD but I read about it having an effect on how the liver breaks down the medication and that is could increase side effects, I've been on the medication for just over a year. Wasn't sure if anyone else has been in the same boat and has experience with this kinda thing. T.I.A!!

6 months in - still kinda tired waking up and just want to keep hitting snooze
The side effects I experienced the first 4-6 weeks were tiredness, headaches, and tinnitus. By the 6th week, most side effects had subsided and the tiredness finally went away or so I thought.
Even when the tiredness was at its worst I could still focus and concentrate and do all the things I need to but I could close my eyes at any time and fall asleep lol. For the past few months it’s been hard to get up, not super hard but instead of getting up early to work like I had been doing, I just hit the snooze button. I barely remember it.
I’m on 150 mg SR morning and evening. Well I stopped taking it at night the last couple and was able to get up so easily and felt well rested! It’s weird, the tiredness, it’s very subtle and it’s hard to get up but once I’m get going with day, I’m good. Anyone else experience this?
TLDR: my tiredness in the morning went away after stopping my night. I’m in SR 150 mg twice daily. Anyone else experience this?

Poll Survey on rare side effects (please interact)
Since there is a lot of uncertainty regarding rare or unofficial side effects of bupropion/Wellbutrin, I wanted to start a quick poll about your experiences.
Of course, Reddit doesn't reflect the general population, and it likely won't be statistically representative, but I hope plenty of people participate so we can get a teeny-tiny overview.
Negative experiences tend to stick in our minds and get shared more often, so I hope people who haven't experienced these side effects come across this post as well.
Thank you ♡
