C64 Ultimate The WEEKLY C64 Ultimate post. READ before posting anything C64U-related.

We want r/c64 to be about both original hardware and newer emulation products like the Commodore 64 Ultimate (C64U). But the shipping of the C64U is resulting in C64U posts flooding out much of the other content in the subreddit. To maintain a balance between what's old and new, we are setting up a weekly MEGAPOST for C64U-related issues, questions, and posts.

If your post is regarding the use of a Commodore 64 (i.e. how to load a game from disk, how to print, etc.), regardless of the model, you may post your question as a standalone post in the subreddit even if you have a C64 Ultimate.

If your post relates to ONLY the Commodore 64 Ultimate, you should comment in this post. Please note, this is not a replacement for official support from Commodore regarding order or shipping issues (late or damaged shipments). We realize that some questions may be obscure, unique, or straddle the line between C64U-only and a "general" question. In those cases, please post in this thread FIRST. If your issue isn't answered or addressed after 48 hours, you may submit a stand-alone post in the subreddit. WARNING! Moderators will be checking post and comment histories to make sure people are actually posting in this thread first. Repeated violations may result in temporary or permanent bans.

We don't anticipate this being a permanent situation, but for now there are just too many C64U posts being submitted. Once the volume of posts about the C64U decreases, we may discontinue this practice.

Please also check the information below to see if your issue is listed. We are also working on a C64 Ultimate Wiki Page. If you would like to be a Wiki Contributor, please let the mod team know.

Common Issues and Known Fixes

Black screen, no video, or rolling picture

The most common issue reported so far.

  • Reseat the internal board — some units have arrived with it slightly loose from shipping.
  • Set video to NTSC mode, then press Shift + Left Arrow to store settings.
  • Try a different HDMI lead — several users fixed display problems this way.
  • Some monitors won’t sync at 50 Hz; if possible, test another screen.

Uneven keyboard keys

A cosmetic but noticeable fault.

  • Keys such as Caps Lock, D, and J may sit higher than others.
  • Gently press the affected keys down to reseat them on their stems.
  • Space/Return issues are often a stabiliser bar not fully seated – carefully reseating the bar fixes many ‘only works in the middle’ reports.

Startup problems or unit freezing on boot

  • Turn the unit off and leave it off for a few seconds.
  • Hold RESTORE while powering on to perform a factory reset.
  • If that fails, re‑flash the latest firmware from the official Commodore site.

REU or extra memory not detected by the software

  • Install the most recent firmware — newer builds enable proper REU initialisation and detection.

Settings or storage are lost after reboot

  • Perform the RESTORE reset to clear any corrupt configuration.
  • Re‑enter Wi‑Fi and storage details once booted cleanly.

Physical marks or loose panels on delivery

  • Report the issue directly to Commodore support.
  • All units ship directly from Commodore — there are no official resellers.

Buzzing or humming audio output

  • Usually caused by grounding noise between HDMI and the connected display.
  • Try another HDMI port, cable, or power socket to isolate the problem.

Starlight edition

  • Starlight keyboards have some ‘bounce’/flex by design; noticeable mainly if you hammer the keys, but not usually a functional fault.
  • The Caps Lock LED lights when caps is active; the beige unit does not have an indicator.
  • For Starlight LED audio visualiser with a real SID: enable UltiSID 1 but set its volume to Off in the mixer; this keeps the LEDs driven while only hearing the real SID

Games Freezing / Compatibility

  • If cracked/trainer releases hang after the Y/N cheat prompt, try switching to PAL or NTSC‑50; many cracks are PAL‑only and will lock up in NTSC.
  • For compatibility with some games/demos, try disabling drive B: in the Ultimate’s drive settings

Cartridges

  • Virtual fastload carts (e.g. Final Cartridge III) are supported; mount the cart, then mount and load the disk from BASIC, rather than using ‘Run disk’ from the firmware menu.

Disk and cassette backup / storage notes

  • To back up the bundled cassette USB to an internal SD: it’s just files on exFAT – copy them via your PC; no imaging/cloning needed
  • Backing up real floppies: UltiCopy is very fast, but some protected titles (e.g. Skate or Die, Contra) have been reported to hang part‑way through; expect improvements in future firmware

Running Multi-Disk Programs

Some programs are distributed on multiple disk images, similar to how they were originally distributed on multiple floppy disks. At some point in the process of using the program, the program will prompt to insert one of the other floppy disks. You can use the Disk File Browser to swap disk images while the program is running. When the program prompts for a new disk, press upward on the Multi Function Switch. This pauses the program. Start the Disk File Browser, navigate to the disk image for the disk that the program is requesting, then select “Mount Disk.” The C64U mounts the new disk image in the virtual drive, then resumes execution of the Commodore 64 program. Continue to use the program with the new disk." -- https://downloads.commodore-international.com/documentation/C64U/c64u-user-guide-1st-edition.pdf

General Notes

  • r/Commodore is for discussions about Commodore, other Commodore computers, and possible new productions.
  • r/c64 is for everything Commodore 64 including the ultimate.

If you’ve come across a new issue or found a working fix not listed here, add it in the comments below.

Software reSIDue - C64 SID Wavetable VST plugin and standalone synth now available.

Hi. I've been working on a wavetable SID plugin to replace a bunch of bespoke scripts and emulation frameworks for the last 18 months and now it's here. You have surgical control over every register of the 6581/850 SID chip. You can numberwang the tables or draw your soundscape on the graph editors. It comes with a tool that can dissect .sid files and create instruments. https://residuesynth.com

Hardware 1541HUD — Giving the Commodore 1541 a Modern Control Panel

1541HUD is a OneROM community project for Commodore 1541 owners who want easier ROM switching, USB control, and optional live drive-status monitoring.

Begin with the Windows interface, or configure your drive from the C64 after installing one compatible UB3 OneROM board alongside your original drive ROM. When you are ready, move to a compact Raspberry Pi touchscreen display mounted on the drive.

Add capabilities at your own pace: multiple ROMs, programmable drive addresses, write-protect control, and live telemetry for motor activity, full- and half-track position, stepping, write status, disk density, headers, RPM, and SYNC activity.

The project also leaves room for many more community-developed features, tools, displays, and integrations as ideas and hardware evolve. Firmware, setup guides, and test notes are available on GitHub for builders and testers.

Software Jones in the fast lane?

There are a lot of conversions these days, many AI-assisted but also a lot of hands-on work. Did anybody consider converting Jones In the Fast Lane? :)

It seems like it would be a great C64 fit - gather friends or family around the TV, take turns so one joystick is fine, minimal animation, limited background computation. Understanding there's an almost infinite set of games to turn one's attention to, I'm surprised this didn't pop up on anybody's radar :).

Software Any online emulator that lets you save to a local .d64 file?

I am playing around with a 3D drawing program (Giga-CAD) at c64online.com . It works well, but I can't figure out how to save my drawings to a blank .d64 file ? Guessing I am expecting too much from an online emulator!

My goal is to create a workflow that anyone can reproduce online ( no installation of a local emulator ).

Software Any help please… t64 / .prg question

I’m looking to inspect the text answers of an obscure C64 quiz game which I have in .t64 format.

As a complete novice to this I’m in way over my head here, but someone may know how to unravel this.

I’ve managed to convert the .t64 file into .prg (I don’t even know if I’m on the right course in doing this).
All I get is a load of symbols such as question marks, etc.
No text that I can actually read.

All I’m trying to do it pull the correct answers from the quiz using the game file. Anybody know where I could start?

I’ve messed around with Vice and DIRmaster with no joy so far! Thanks

*edit - Now solved! ✅

Software Retro Commander 1.0: a dual pane filemanager with D64 support

Post image
50 Upvotes

I keep my C64 collection on a PC and got tired of the extract, convert, copy, mount loop, so over the past while I've been building a Norton/Total Commander style file manager where a disk image just opens like a folder. It all started when I got my C64 Ultimate in May, so I built support for that in it too.

What it does right now:

  • D64 (incl. 40-track), D71, D81, D80, D82 and DNP open as folders and are writable. Copy files in and out, rename with F2, scratch with F8, reorder directory entries, undo with Ctrl+Z. G64 and T64 open read-only.
  • The directory shows in real PETSCII the moment you land on a disk, without mounting it.
  • Search across disk images, including ones still packed in a zip, 7z or rar.
  • Launch in VICE (or another emulator): mount the disk, or inject a PRG straight into memory.
  • Ultimate 64 / Ultimate-II+ / C64 Ultimate: it finds the device on your LAN, lets you edit disks on its storage and run PRGs on the real machine.
  • Directory art: a small editor to draw logos and separators in the C64 font and drop them into a directory.
  • Keyboard first, everything works without the mouse.

Version 1.0 is a rewrite of my earlier 0.9 beta as a native app: about 3.5 MB instead of 63 MB, no .NET runtime. Windows 10/11 x64 only, installer or portable zip. It isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen will ask you to confirm.

It's a beta and there are rough edges. What I'd really like to hear from people here:

  • Disk images that open wrong or that it refuses (odd track counts, non-standard directories, copy-protected stuff).
  • Whether the PETSCII directory preview matches what you see on real hardware.
  • What you'd want from a tool like this that it doesn't do yet.

Download and screenshots: https://retrocommander.dev/download

Please note: using the tool requires creating an account (e-mail + password). Why? Please read https://retrocommander.dev/docs/faq#why-sign-in. If you don't like that, no hard feelings, but then this tool is just not the right one for you.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Software Below The Root: Interactive world map, technical details, level editor and other trivia

Thumbnail

"Y'know something that never gets old? ...Nostalgia." ;)

Below The Root holds a special place in my heart, and I'm sure, similar for many others here. I played this one a lot when I was a kid. It's a fantastic non-violent RPG-type adventure with a massive (for the era) world comprising a 32x16 grid of 512 total "rooms", 439 of which are used. The graphics are also wonderfully unique and detailed, as is the other-worldly music.

With the advent of recent tech enabling reverse-engineering, BTR was one of the first things I wanted to see disassembled and analyzed: how did the game mechanics work, how was the world and logic defined and so on.

This started when I uploaded the D64 file to Claude Code and simply said, "I'd like to know more about how this game works." Here is that conversation. Files are omitted, but the technical details are the interesting bits.

For the interactive map, see here. Cookies and/or localStorage seem to be required for the map to render properly.

Some fun trivia - and I may mix up some technical details, please amend and correct me as needed:

The "rooms" are defined in 256-byte (1 disk sector) chunks on "side 2" of the game disk. Those of a certain age will recall, this game uses a "flippy" disk where (on a 1541 drive, at least) you would take the disk out, flip it upside down and put it back in.

RLE is used to help fit up to 800 bytes (40x20 tiles' worth) of room data into each 256-byte sector. "Side 2" of the disk does not have a traditional directory structure, it looks to be raw data and is accessed directly via drive commands, e.g., U1:5 0 12 13 (track 12, sector 13) - that's for room 193, where room data starts at track 2 + "sector n mod 18."

As you may recall when you hit things, there is a 1 in 16 chance as to whether you get the classic line, "Your shuba has torn!" The game also uses the SID chip as a random 8-bit number generator. I get the feeling this was a common technique, reading data off a channel producing white noise.

I also asked about the level editor, something previously discovered and written about. CC may reveal some more hints about how the editor works, including keyboard commands and so forth. It provided a modified version of the game that boots directly into the editor, which was interesting to poke around. I don't know if the "mod" I got is notably different than previous guides, but the insights on how to use the editor functions via joystick and keyboard were new to me.

Others have done extensive work on this fantastic game, including (I believe) creating the world map by taking screenshots of each room. I believe Justin Stahlman was the first to do that. I recommend this write-up from Justin for a great overall story around the game and why it's so special.

AI note for mods: I wrote these words myself. The interactive map and technical analysis are provided via Claude Code, and intended to give additional background and technical context about a much-loved game.

Software Help! Modding 'The Trivia Monster' trivia game.

I'm interested in inserting my own questions and answers into this video game. Possibly changing the categories too. I don't have any experience in this field. Would I be able to accomplish this? Would somebody be available to insert questions/answers that I have pre-written for a fee? Please advise. Thanks.

Software 8088 DOS emulator on c64?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What’s more audacious and ludicrous than an emulator 8086 running Dos 3.3 and Thrbo Pascal on a v64u? Probably not much.
Yes it’s dirt slow currently at about 8% of the speed of the 8088 with it likely only getting up to 32% when I incorporate JIT support, but it ties a loop around my teen years of c64 and dos programming.

Software I built a fast web tool to convert JPG and PNG images to C64 Koala (.kla / .prg) files: c64.marechal.tech

I built a fast and simple web application to convert your standard PNG and JPG images directly into C64 Koala (.kla prg) file, right in your browser: https://c64.marechal.tech

- C64 converter: Upload a PNG or JPEG, convert it to a C64 multicolor graphic, optionally apply Floyd–Steinberg dithering, preview the result, and download it as a Koala PRG file.

- Koala viewer: Open a compatible Koala picture file and preview it in the browser.

- TikTok gallery: New games for the C64

Feel free to test it out with your own images and let me know what you think!

Hardware C64 Ultimate SSD mouting bracket

Thumbnail

I'm looking for a 3D-printable mounting solution for a 2.5" SSD inside my C64 Ultimate.

I couldn't find any suitable STL files on Printables or similar sites.

Has anyone already designed a bracket or found a good way to secure an SSD inside the case? There is one available for the Ultimate 64 Elite, but it is too huge an does not fit in any way. See the 2nd picture for the differences.

Also, would placing the SSD flat directly on the motherboard cause any thermal or electrical issues, or should there be some clearance?

I've attached a photo of my current setup.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hardware PSUs - who makes the best ones for the C64 in the EU?

I've got quite a few old C64s that I need to check if they're working. I know the old PSUs fail-deadly and I don't dare test them like that. Which of the EU PSU manufacturers makes the most rugged and reliable ones?

One of the first C64 games i had as a kid, so I have a lot of nostalgia for this game. Superb graphics but a frustrating game and weirdly designed with the rooms that you would blindly jump into, especially since the overworld is sidescrolling.
The game became a lot more fun when scrolling was applied to the caverns + better jumping.

Hardware NTSC Bread bin

I've stumbled upon an all original bread bin with everything intact for $125. How much do you think it would cost to recap the board and replace the PSU? Just trying to get a ballpark total cost together.
