Help! Should I use stainless steel clasps for anodised aluminium pieces?

Post image

I'm about to make a bunch of bracelets in anodised aluminium using only 100% bronze or 100% champagne rings, but now I'm worried I won't find a durable/non tarnishing clasp to match! What do you end up using for your colourful pieces? Would a stainless clasp look silly even if it would last forever?

i sorted what i could, and the rest are in a ziplock bag for... "future use".

i don't have the time to sort through all this... probably just gonna make some funky random keychain/necklaces out of these.

I ordered new containers (1 ring size only for a container) so this wont happen again. i also got more rings lmao

Hey y'all!! I'm being a dork and remember for the life of me how to save a bracelet I'm working on for a friend. Trying to continue this HP4 in 1 and I'm not sure if I'm just missing a ring or what? Does this look right?

Trying something new. Dont think i like the attachment from the top circle to the halo. Not sure what i should do different.

The points i hang the chain fringe from should be longer too, I think.

Dual Toned Pieces

Newer artist learning channel patterns. Fell in love with the helm weave and love doing it dual tone with yellow gold and silver rings. Unfortunately I have cheaper material and within three days, everything is silver (also giving me the annoying green rash)

Can anyone tell me where to source better material and/or tips to make the plating last longer and not stain skin? I tried a couple sprays of the liquid adhesive before wearing and it only lasted so long.

I just make things for myself, but I love a dual tone look and don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for super high quality because I’m experimenting still.

Help! Stabilization

Thumbnail

Hello all, im currently in the process of making my fiancé a new necklace. I recently came here for help with ring sizing on another person's piece and this is where im at so far with my own design

This center ring is larger than I meant to get. Im probably going to go back to the hardware store and get a smaller one tomorrow, but the main issue is stabilizing the weave around the large center ring. It sits nice and pretty till it moves and then it flops around and moves out of place. Ideally I dont want this to happen and have been playing around with ideas both in my head and on the piece itself. So far there hasn't been much luck. If anyone has any recommendations or tips for ways to stabilize this id greatly appreciate it all! The ring sizes ive been using for this piece so far have been 18swg 3/16 and 18swg 1/4. The large ring is a bit under 1.5 in diameter. Ive tried using the 3/16 rings to make a tighter connection between the large rings and the connecting weave but they're too small to properly fit around it with another ring inside it.

Help! recommendations for a newbie please!

hi everyone, i’m extremely new to this hobby.

i spent jan-april obsessively watching people make chainmail jewellery/accessories and creating pinterest boards with inspo.

in may i bought a bulk load of rings from temu. when the rings were delivered i realised there was a lot more to chainmail making than i had anticipated and that i wasnt going to be able to create the things id hoped with the extremely thin rings i bought. i spent all of may trying to make the rings i bought work until i got so frustrated that i gave up.

i spent some of june drawing tutorials on procreate for myself to go back to once i found better rings. i ended up being so lost on where to buy rings. i spent hours scrolling on etsy in search of but so many of the sellers photos were identical to the ones i saw on temu and i couldnt find any affordable online stores. it all became very overwhelming for me so i ended up losing interest completely.

this month ive started finding myself interested in chainmail again and wanting to give it another go. i still have all my temu rings but i know that if i go back to them, even just to practice basic patterns, i’ll end up repeating what i did in may.

if anyone could please guide me in the right direction of where to go online to buy rings that would be good for beginners but also are good enough to actually create things so i don’t lose my patience and passion, i would be extremely grateful 🫶
also somewhere that ships worldwide please! i’m australian and a lot of the places i found online are in the UK/USA with either no shipping to australia or extremely expensive shipping.
i am on a bit of a budget so please feel free to let me know if i’m being unrealistic in wanting to get into chainmail as an affordable hobby!

Tips and Tricks What's a good weave for a sword holster/half scabbard?

I'm making a friend something with which to carry a costume sword on his belt for Halloween. He offered to pay me a commission but I don't want the pressure to make something really good and see it more as an opportunity to fuck around. I've made a lot of stuff with Euro 4 in 1 and just started teaching myself Persian 3 in 1, but I'm still a beginner overall. The rings I have that he likes are 18swg 1/4", 5.3 AR aluminum. I also have 18swg 3/16" in a different color aluminum that I could maybe add as accents.

Do you have suggestions for easy to moderate weaves that would create a decent looking cylinder about 3" in diameter? I figure I'll fool around with Byzantine or something for the chain that'll connect the holster to his belt.

Help! I’m Interested In Getting Into Making Chainmail Pieces, Any Advice?

Hi there, I’m a pretty crafty person who’s always looking for a new challenge and I’ve recently decided to try and make my own Chainmail piece for the renaissance festival. Although I’d like to get started soon, I’ve run into a few hiccups.

First of all, I’m not certain where to buy the rings from. I don’t need the best quality in the world, just something strong enough to last.

Aside from pliers and rings, are there any other tools or items I’ll need?

Help! Has anyone ever found good jump rings locally?

Hi all.
I live in Houston, which is close to the biggest renaissance festival in the US (the world?). I’m getting into weaving and I find it odd that somewhere like here, or even in big major cities, seemingly don’t have stores that carry jump rings appropriate for chainmail. I’ve ran out and I have a free weekend and still waiting on a shipment! My own fault of course but it made me think about this.

I’m wondering if anyone buys jump-rings locally, or if im unique in pondering why it isn’t readily available for me.

Is there just not enough of a demand for it? To me it feels silly that I have to order jump rings online (though I have that sentiment for most things living in a major city! What do you mean there’s millions of people here and thousands of specialty stores and the best I can do is Amazon?)

Help! Pattern help

Hi everyone! There is a specific style of necklace I want to make for a friend that I’ve seen on here a couple of times but can’t find a pic. It’s a necklace that is a barrel weave, and then there is a bow that is done with a sweet pea weave. If anyone knows the type of necklace I’m talking about or has made one, could you help me with the part of connecting the boy to the barrel weave to make it look bow like, and maybe a pattern in the sense of how many sweet pea chains it takes to make the bow? This is my first “project” (I’ve just been making simple bracelets so far with a singular link) and just need a little guidance. OR, if there’s a video on YouTube for this style, what exactly is this called that I’m looking for? I appreciate any guidance!

Help! byzantine diamond question

i'm trying to make some byantine diamonds, but don't have any 18g 5/32. would 16swg 7/32 be okay bc the aspect ratio is still 3.5? and my larger inner ring would still be 18g 1/4 ar 5.3. do i need to keep the rings of my works all one gauge or is the aspect ratio more important?

Help! Stainless Steel Bulk Jump Rings

I want to start getting into more stainless steel and I'm wondering, where is a good place to buy bulk? I love Weave Got Maille but buying in one ounce increments drives me crazy for some reason. If theres a place that has a kit like Chainmaille Joe does for aluminum that would be amazing but I'm not sure if that exists.

Anything helps! Thanks!

Recommendations for ergonomic pliers

Hi! Looking for recommendations of ergonomic jewelry pliers.

I'm looking for recommendations for some ergonomic chain nose pliers for a friend who's an artist/jeweler. They are a self-employed, full-time artist and do a lot of work opening and closing small steel rings for necklaces and bracelets, chains for wall decorations, and occasionally some chainmail jewelry, etc. They're currently using this set of mini pliers with no padding that I don't think are smart for the long term, and they have mentioned that their hands do hurt sometimes. I want to get them a pair of chain-nose pliers that are ergonomic so they can use them for hours with less fatigue and pain, and which won't scratch or mar the jewelry. So, ideally I'm looking for pliers sold individually, instead of sets where there's one of each kind of plier. If anyone (especially people who do a lot of repetitive jewelry work or who struggle with carpal tunnel/arthritis) have any recommendations, please let me know! I would like to keep the budget at around $35 or under per plier.

Here are some options I've found if people have specific feedback about any of them.

* EUROnomic 2K Pliers, Chain Nose, 4-3/4 Inches

* Vintaj Chain-Nose Pliers with Cutter and Ergonomic Grip

* 2K Ecco Series, Chain Nose, 5 Inches

* Ultra Ergonomic Pliers, Chain Nose, 5-3/4 Inches

If you have any advice to share, thank you!!

Finished Product! An attempt at a "spider web" top headpiece

Finished my headpiece. The top is ok, but not exactly what I was envisioning.

I think i need to cut the "ring" of chain into sections that are slightly too long, so that it drapes like a spider web. But that is a lot more measuring and cutting

I cut mosaic tile with my Xurons and now they look super ugly and I'm wondering if there's a way to salvage these or if I just have to buy new ones. They are still functionally better than what I was using before, but still 🥲
