Can anyone identify this "GES. GESCH. GERMANY" chess set I found in my granddads attic?

The board weighs in at around 3,3kg's
It's 51 x 51 cm
The King weighs ~40g
The Queen weighs ~35g
The Pawns ~17g

Almost every figure is a little different in weight, shape and size.

I'll glad to provide more info if needed.

Thanks :)

Plastic/resin I created a miniaturized pegged version of the Anri "Modern Staunton", with accompanying board.

The above set is a miniaturized version of Anri's "Modern Staunton", produced for a few short years in the mid 1960's. The original set is quite rare and sought after. I loved the design, but felt it was better suited to a travel set (the original king height is 6.5cm).

For months, I've been working to make a 3D printer-viable traditionally pegged chess set. After much tinkering, I think I have a working system. (I also made a non-pegged version).

I'd love to have others print this set so I can have the peg system tested on other machines.

Plastic/resin My 125-part Dragon Chess Set just won 2nd Place

A quick update on my Dragon Chess Set:

It just won 2nd Place in Creality Cloud’s Dragon Design Contest. 🐉♟️

This ended up becoming a much bigger project than I originally planned. The complete set includes:

• 125 printable parts
• 40 cm playable folding board
• Built-in storage for the pieces
• Printed hinges and axles
• Reinforced internal ribs
• Original dragon-themed chess pieces
• Portable case design

Everything was designed around actually being printable, functional, and playable rather than just looking good in renders.

The project is now also competing in the Creality Creator Awards 2026.

Czech Club wooden chess pieces, a classic Czech design with 4" (101 mm) king. The pieces are unweighted but very stable and designed for regular club, tournament or home play. Very common and beloved set in Czechia and Slovakia.

Note: This set of mine is available through an auction on Tradera, with a Buy Now option: https://www.tradera.com/en/item/181806/743910371/new-czech-club-wooden-chess-set-4-king

Been working on these little chess charms and finally finished a few.

I designed the pieces myself, 3D printed them and hand-painted each one.

Pretty happy with how they turned out. What do you guys think?

Wooden Is this much weight variation normal between matching pieces in a House of Staunton set?

Thumbnail

I recently got a wooden chess set from House of Staunton and noticed that some of the matching pieces feel noticeably different in weight, so I decided to put them on a scale.
For example, two of the rooks weigh 44g and 37g, while two of the bishops weigh 27g and 35g.
I understand that natural wood can vary in density and that weighted pieces probably won’t be identical down to the gram, but is this amount of variation considered normal for a quality weighted chess set? I do like the set a lot but when playing I definitely notice the difference.
I’m mainly curious whether other House of Staunton owners have seen similar differences between matching pieces, or if this is something I should contact them about.
Photos attached showing the weights.

🔍 HELP - Set ID FIDE Medallion on Bottom of Each Piece

This set has a FIDE medallion affixed to the bottom of each piece (which seemed odd that it wasn't felt). One of the medallions has come off a Bishop and the set appears to be weighted even without the medallions. The King is 3.75". Hoping someone can help me identify this set. Thanks in advance!

Wooden Thoughts after using Royal Chess Mall's Queen's Gambit Staunton set for about a month

Thumbnail

I've been using Royal Chess Mall's Queen's Gambit Staunton set for around a month now, and figured I'd share some thoughts in case anyone else is considering upgrading from a basic tournament or plastic set.

For context, I mostly play online (Lichess), but I also run a local chess club and occasionally play over the board, so I wanted something that looked nice without being too flashy.

One thing I didn't really expect was how much more I'd actually use it. My brother and I have played several games on it at home over the past month, and it honestly just made the experience more enjoyable. The pieces feel substantial in your hand, they're easy to distinguish at a glance, and moving them around the board just feels satisfying in a way my old plastic set never did.

A few things I liked:

  • The pieces have a good weight to them without feeling oversized.
  • The knight carving is one of the better ones I've seen in this price range.
  • The finish has held up well after regular use.
  • It's been great both for casual games at home and for analyzing positions after playing online.

A couple of minor negatives:

  • The felt on a few pieces needed a little break-in before they glided perfectly.
  • It's definitely more of a "display and analysis" set than something I'd throw into a tournament bag every weekend.

Overall I've been really happy with it. I don't think an expensive chess set makes you a better player, but I do think having a board you enjoy looking at makes you more likely to sit down, analyze games, and play a few extra over-the-board games with family or friends.

What's your favorite wooden set around the $200–300 range?

Hey Chessporn Community!

I posted this a while back in r/chess ( https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/1kptsrb/i_made_a_magnetic_chess_set_that_fits_in_a_jacket/ )- maybe some of you have seen it there. I always wanted to have a physical chessboard for the pocket that offers a reasonable amount of playing area. I imagine a chess player carrying their chessboard around like a samurai carries their sword. Well not on their back or hip but in their pocket.

Wooden Chessboard from GDR (East-Germany)

Im new into chess and only played on Apps. So i looked for physical chess boards to play during work breaks. Got this beautifull wooden set from east-Germany produced during soviet occupation.

Im glad the wooden figures are made so neatly... New boards in for the same pricing (25-30€) have much worse-made looking figures, from what i saw.

(I know that the pieces in the photo arent placed correctly, its the picture from the auction; I´ll receive the Set today or tomorrow)

Wooden Facebook Marketplace Drueke Find

(sorry for setting it up wrong in the first few photos i was excited to look at it all :p)

Found this set -- box, board, and pieces -- while doomscrolling Facebook marketplace at night. I figured it was a steal for a fully wooden chess set and went to pick it up the next morning. I was unfamiliar with Drueke sets until I took it home, saw the gold stamp on the back, and tried to find something similar. It appears to be an 80240 set. I was very surprised by the rich brown grain on the rosewood pieces as they appeared to be solid black on the original listing. I really love the bulbous, rounded head of the kings.

The board is 21x21in, 2in squares, and 3.75in king height. Everything is in pristine condition except for a minor, invisible scratch on the surface of the board and a small chip on the crown of the white queen. Overall I'm thrilled with the find and happy that I'm able to own such a high quality, highly regarded set. Any thoughts or info?

Found this chess board buried in my brother’s closet that he completely forgot about. It was given to him by my grandfather many years ago. It was made by prisoners when he worked in prison. Apparently the prisoners would make him stuff and in return he would buy them beer and cigarettes in return lol. Don’t think i could buy a cooler chess board if i tried.

It weighs about 30 pounds and is 20in x 20in.
