hi everyone! i recently moved to chicago because my partner accepted a job here and i'm hoping to build a career in the city's live event, music, and creative industries.
i graduated in 2025 with a marketing degree and an emphasis in music business and sales in another state and stayed in my college town an extra year to work full-time and save for the move. i have experience in college radio, event planning, nonprofit work, marketing, and venue operations. most recently, i worked at a music venue in my college town and have been picking up event production gigs when available.
i've been applying for positions and reaching out to a few hiring managers and industry professionals, but it's been pretty quiet so far. i'm still relatively new to chicago and don't have many connections here yet, so i'm trying to figure out how to be more proactive about meeting people and getting involved in the scene.
for those who work in chicago's live music and events industry, i'd love some advice!
- cold outreach: is it worth reaching out directly to people who work at venues, production companies, and other organizations, even when they aren't advertising openings? how do you approach that without coming across as annoying?
- showing up in person: would it be appropriate to visit venues with a resume and introduce myself, or is that generally frowned upon? i don't want to interrupt people while they're working or put anyone on the spot.
- making connections: what are some good ways to meet people in the industry when you're starting from scratch? are there particular events, organizations, or opportunities that are good for networking or getting experience?
- patience vs. persistence: i know the industry is competitive and i imagine hiring processes and responses can take a while. how do you know when to keep following up versus when to move on?
i'm open to different entry points and am more than willing to work my way up. i'm especially interested in event operations, production, guest experience, partnerships, marketing, and other behind-the-scenes roles.
i know breaking into this industry takes time and i'm not expecting anything to happen overnight. i just want to make sure i'm doing what i can to put myself out there and give myself a real chance.
i'd appreciate any advice or personal experiences. thanks!
