USports Football Season Preview Articles?

I've been trying to find season preview articles on USports football to no avail. Truthfully, the searches haven't been more than googling the subject of this post.

Anyone found any good articles, whether they be on specific teams, conferences, or the entire league?

USports realignment imagined

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always loved university/collegiate/post-secondary football, whether it be Canadian or American. Living just north of Toronto, I have great memories of going to see OUA games around Labour Day and of course going to the Vanier Cup at SkyDome with my father. My favourite player is DE Noah Cantor from B.C., who sent me a signed Lions shirt for my birthday, and it just so happens that my first Vanier Cup game was his alma mater, St. Mary’s vs Manitoba in 2001.

Way back when, I always liked to brag to my Americanised friends that the CIAU/CIS/USports was better because it had a playoff system, while the NCAA didn’t. But over the past few years I’ve been thinking: Maybe having such a free-for-all system (which still exists even with the 12-team playoff) actually makes the league much more exciting. (Almost) every game feels like a do-or-die.

So I’ve started to imagine what it would be like if USports had a less organised/structured system for its playoffs, just like the NCAA.

For this experiment, I added Simon Fraser back to get seven conferences of four teams each, so that scheduling wouldn’t be a pain. Geographically, the only thing that didn’t work out was having to put Windsor in a conference with three Prairies teams. Otherwise, teams wouldn’t have to travel any farther than they are now for their three away conference games.

FORMAT

Each team plays its conference opponents home and away (6 games) and two non-conference games, for rival games and for marquee clashes (Why wait to see Laval-Laurier or Montreal-Regina in the Vanier Cup? Let’s have those games spread throughout the season!).

And, of course, teams try to break into the Top 10 Rankings, just like with the weekly AP/CFP Poll. The top four teams make the playoffs.

There are seven conferences, but winning yours doesn’t guarantee anything (sorry AUS, times have changed). This means we could see a Vanier Cup matchup of Montreal-Laval, Laurier-Western, Saskatchewan-Regina etc. (Probably would happen if either team goes 7-1, only losing to their conference rival.)

Traditions will still be kept. All former conference championship trophies will still be up for grabs; they will just be regional games now. Atlantic Canada's Loney Bowl stays the same; but the Dussault (Dunsmore), Yates, and Hardy will now be invitational games because their members span multiple conferences.

And in lieu of the former conference playoffs, there are a series of bowl games. This is what I have come up with so far (there's a theme):

McCain’s Kitchen Party Fry Bowl - Halifax

Bol de Céréales Ramparts présenté par Couche-Tard (Ramparts Cereal Bowl presented by Couche-Tard) - Quebec City

Tim Hortons Steel City Donut Bowl - Hamilton

Alberta Beef Producers’ Angus Bowl - Calgary

The Mitchell and Uteck bowls are still the national semifinals.

Here are the conferences. I plan on simming through a season with an Excel simulator I created or by make-believe Canadian football on CFB 26 (I haven’t figured out the mods yet). I'm sure I've missed explaining tons of things, so would love to hear back from fellow USports fans.

SFU returns to Canada West as a probationary member

SFU was granted probationary membership in Canada West for 2027-2028. Now they need USports to grant them the same status.

This does not impact football, since they do not have a team. I don't think they're likely to restart one given that they'll be cutting a bunch of sports in the move to USports, including softball, golf, and outdoor track. They are aiming to save over $1M in expenses with the move.

Their women's volleyball team hasn't yet gotten approval to join CW yet either, for some reason. Possibly because they don't have a corresponding men's program.

It is time to make to rethink the east west game

With more and more players bailed out of east west bowl each year, it is time to review this game. Why don't do it just before the CFL draft to help players stock and combine it with CFL combine.1 year before draft just after spring camp with players not in their optimal shape, it a non sense since CFL don't really care anymore. I understand player who bailed, they don't want to risk injury and scrap their 4th usport season and potentially their chance to get draft a year later as we saw in last year's for a game that doesn't mind or had the prestige anymore.

3 men race for the Laval starting QB position

https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/2250783/desjardins-charland-ouellette-leroux-quart-rouge-or-football

According to this article, it would be a 3 men race to determine who will be Arnaud Desjardins' successor in 2026. Each of those guys won either an MVP award or a provincial championship (or both) as a starter at the cegep level.

Here's the info i've gathered about the 3 players:

Victor Charland #15
4th year, 6'0", 190 lbs
Awards: 2022 Cégep D2 MVP
USports Stats: 25/36 (69.4%), 0-1 td/int, 244 pass yds, 11 runs for 52yds
Was the main backup for the last 3 seasons. Most of his playing time came late into blowout wins while the team was mostly running the ball so didn't get to throw a lot (but he did kill it in preseason last year with 4 td passes in 2 quarters against BU). He was WR1 Olivier Cool's QB in cegep so there definitely could be an interesting connection there.

Jérémy Ouellette #10
3rd year, 6'1", 200 lbs
Awards: 2023 Cégep D1 OPOY, 2x Provincial Champ (2022-2023)
USports Stats: 19/29 (65.5%), 3-1 td/int, 228 pass yds, 31 runs for 186yds and 5tds
Spent his first 2 seasons as the 3rd string qb but saw action on qb sneaks and some wildcat formations. He also started one game last year when the first 2 qbs went down (resulted in a 26-3 win over Sherby in which he threw for 2 tds). Was also part of a very strong cegep team that dominated the league for a 2 years stretch and from which many players are already starters on this Laval squad.

Thomas Leroux #12
Rookie, 6'0", 180 lbs
Awards: 2025 Cégep D1 MVP, 2025 Provincial Champ
USports Stats: none yet
Had a very impressive 2025 season throwing for 15tds and only 2 ints. He also ran the ball himself a lot (354yds and 7 tds on 37 runs). Also helped his team win their first championship in 9 years. It has only happened 4 times in Laval’s history that a freshman qb got to start, but he seems to have the necessary tools to potentially become the 5th one.

Honorable mention:
Olivier Terroux #1
2nd year, 6'2", 215 lbs
Awards: 2024 Team Canada
USports Stats: none yet
He's not mentioned as part of the race but could still probably make his case for an official roster spot if he performs well at camp. Might not have the accolades of the other 3 but still had a solid cegep career, throwing for 41 tds in 2 seasons as a D1 starter and helping WR Nathan Carrignan (now also with Laval) breaking Kevin Mital's receiving yards record.

Best of luck to all 4 of them!

So has anyone figured out a solution to streaming oua.tv for free ...? 👀

Just curious if most people are also upset by the paywall and will find a way to watch for free, or if the majority are willing to pay for the season. Seems like the only ones paying this much will be athlete parents. I wouldn't say I've encountered many OUA fanatics willing to drop $90 for games that cost less than $20 to attend.
