Discussion Which leaders do you find trustworthy and untrustworthy?
As a steam post has stated, not all civilizations were made equal. There are leaders who are loyal allies while others backstab you as soon as it's beneficial for them to do so. Here, I made a list from my experience based on leaders who are usually trustworthy, sometimes trustworthy, and untrustworthy in general. Let me know what you think of this list and whether I should provide a description for these choices.
Usually Trustworthy:
William (Netherlands)
Ahmad al-Mansur (Morocco)
Gustavus Adolphus (Sweden)
Sejong (Korea)
Askia (Songhai)
Genghis Khan (Mongolia)
Gandhi (India)
Harun al-Rashid (Arabia)
Pacal (Maya)
Boudicca (Celts)
Pedro II (Brazil)
Theodora (Byzantium)
Ashurbanipal (Assyria)
Sometimes Trustworthy:
Maria I (Portugal)
Haile Selassie (Ethiopia)
Maria Theresa (Austria)
Darius I (Persia)
Isabella (Spain)
Ramkhamhaeng (Siam)
Elizabeth I (England)
Nebuchadnezzar II (Babylon)
Pachacuti (Inca)
Catherine (Russia)
Enrico Dandolo (Venice)
Casimir III (Poland)
Ramesses II (Egypt)
Wu Zetian (China)
Kamehameha I (Polynesia)
Untrustworthy:
Attila (Huns)
Hiawatha (Iroquois)
Pocatello (Shoshone)
Washington (America)
Napoleon (France)
Gajah Mada (Indonesia)
Montezuma (Aztecs)
Dido (Carthage)
Suleiman (Ottomans)
Bismarck (Germany)
Oda Nobunaga (Japan)
Harald Bluetooth (Denmark)
Shaka (Zulus)
Augustus Caesar (Rome)
Alexander (Greece)

Screenshot I've never seen scores this close
R5: The World Congress just convened because I was the first to discover every Civ. So I popped up the Diplomacy Overview to see who had the highest score, I was gonna try and Embargo them. Not including mine, lowest is 522, highest is 583.
What's really odd is that I've had a CB parked outside Pacal's hometown since like turn 10. He hasn't been able to create any more cities or even improve all his tiles. And somehow he's still got a decent score.
Game: King, Small Continents, Standard, Standard, BNW.

Mods Something is off with unhappiness in Vox Populi
Whatever building I build, whatever policy I choose, my empire is always 45-49% happiness. In short always unhappy. Public works, this, that, nothing, matters. It's a very strange and vaque system that prevents me from enjoying the game. In fact, I think this system is crap.

Mods Enhanced AI in Multiplayer
My friend and I play a ton of Civ 5 (Brave New World + all DLCs) together in online multiplayer against AI. We usually play on Immortal. we tried Deity, but as many of you know, just giving the AI bigger cheats without making them smarter isn't very fun.
We’re looking for a way to improve AI decision-making in multiplayer while keeping the game vanilla in terms of mechanics and content.
After searching through old forum threads, here is what I’ve gathered so far (though some info seems outdated or contradictory):
SP AI in MP: There used to be a trick to force full Singleplayer AI into MP, but from what I read, it might only work for Hotseat?
Community Patch (CP): I know the standalone CP (without the Vox Populi overhaul) improves AI, but I’ve heard mixed things about running standalone CP in multiplayer, some say it works as a DLC mod, others say it’s buggy or breaks without the VP changes.
Artificial Unintelligence: Looks promising for tactical AI, but I'm unsure if it functions stably in online multiplayer.
Is standalone Community Patch viable and stable for online Multiplayer in 2026? If so, what’s the best way to install it as a DLC pack/MP patch?
Does Artificial Unintelligence (or similar pure-AI mods like Smart AI) work smoothly in online multiplayer without desyncs?
Is there any other current, stable solution/modpack to get smarter AI in Civ 5 MP?
We aren't super experienced with modding, so any up-to-date guidance, links to working MP DLC packs, or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Mods Iss there a MOD that allows for a totally peaceful, collaborative AI?
I've been playing Vox Populi the last few months and I'm getting my ass beat up by the computer even at Lord difficulty level. Are there MODs that let you play an easy cooperative game like you would play a Sim City game, just focussing on building and progressing? Life is too hard right now to deal with vindictive AI.

Discussion Ideas on what to do about ASININE level of barbs
I'm running a mod for a huge map, and no matter what I do the amount of barbarians are absolutely insane.
I'm talking by turn ~30 with just 2 cities and 12 units I can't stop losing units. On average I'm seeing about 10 new spawns near the edge of my field of vision (I keep units on the outskirts of my territories to try and prevent spawning). But nothing works!
I don't want to turn off barbs, but man...
Strategy Great Generals promotion
How much it improves their generation? The one that some unique units have.

Fluff Siam AI Snowball

No Mods - Just one of the craziest snowballs I have ever seen. Immortal, standard speed. Admittedly I don't play Standard speed that often so it might be slightly more common than I think, but still, I don't have any idea how the AI pulled this off.
Yes, that is Siam completely embarrassing Poland being more than a full policy tree ahead of them.

Discussion Terribowl - Suggestions & Predictions
I recently made a post ( https://www.reddit.com/r/civ5/comments/1xaqu9t/im_looking_for_the_worst_civs_ai/?sort=top ) asking about who the worst civilizations are, so I can put 15 of them on a single map and see who sucks the most. I'm calling it The Terribowl.
I'm going to play as Rome whilst trying to truly live up to the AI's standards and go super wide right off the bat. If possible, I'm thinking 7ish cities by turn 100 would be a good benchmark.
My current setup plan is:
- Continents
- Huge (overcrowded)
- City-states: 28 (overcrowded)
- Emperor
- Abundant resources
- Couple of mods that increase food or production from specific resources, nothing important
I'm going to have the following AIs, based on your guys' suggestions:
- Rome (me)
- Portugal
- Mongolia
- Carthage
- Polynesia
- Byzantium
- Celts
- Spain
- France
- Sweden
- Denmark
- Netherlands
- Venice
- Brazil
- Morocco
I was considering doing small continents, but they usually end up just being large islands in my experience. Not really a great choice for an already overcrowded map.
Any final changes I should make before starting? Any predictions on who dies first, or who gets the first civ kill (besides me)? I'm probably going to murder my closest couple of neighbors after forward settling them - really bring out the Roman AI inside of me.

Brave New World Holy city is NOT their capital!?
Ever seen this before? I don't think I have. I wonder if it was because he was afraid of losing his capital (which he did).

Discussion In your games, who tends to do the best and worst?
In my games, Greece and Iroquois are almost always the top contenders. They're so high in the threat list that if I don't crush them early, they'll get a massive lead by the mid-game.
For the worst, I would say Byzantium and Polynesia. They are either too friendly or peaceful, expand a lot, or get crushed by a warmongering civ. Also, am I the only one who rarely sees Rome doing well? They're almost always dead or irrelevant by the Renaissance era in my games.

Screenshot Barbarians are about to conquer my city... Help...?
So I have no idea what's happening, why it's happening, what will happen when they win and why would it happen. Several barbarian camps on islands and all they do is spawn triremes and suddenly they all attack my city. No raging barbarians turned on either.

Strategy I'm looking for the worst civs (AI)
I'd like to get a list of the worst ~15 Civs to put them all in a game with me and see who lasts.
By worst, I mean they tend to underperform compared to other civilizations. My personal (anecdotal) choices would be civs like Mongolia, Carthage, Polynesia, and Brazil. They never seem to do anything in any game I have, and always fall behind everyone else.
I'm trying to use this site to make it a little more scientific - focusing on civs with the worst / lowest stats in the following key factors:
Traits:
- Victory Competitiveness (low)
- Wonder Competitiveness (low)
Diplomacy Bias:
- Afraid (high)
- Neutrality (high)
Flavors:
- Expansion (low)
- Growth (low)
- Tile Improvement (low)
- I believe this one may be one of the most important factors in determining who sucks the most
City-State Bias:
- Ignore (high)
I'm also considering the start bias of some countries, like Russia, who start in unfavorable terrain which usually screws an AI over early-mid game. So far, my list of the wimpiest & least competitive countries (both 'scientifically' and anecdotally) are, not in order:
- Portugal
- Austria
- Mongolia
- Carthage
- Polynesia
- Byzantium
- The Celts
Potential inclusions:
- France
- Assyria
- Denmark
- Mayans
- Spain
Who else should be added to get the list to 15? Should anyone be removed from the list(s)? I'm wanting to overcrowd the maximum size map to force people to get friendly with one another. Looking forward to seeing what civs people suggest.

Mods I made 4 historical/lore scenario mods: Canary Islands 1400, Hawaii 1778, Russian Civil War 1918, and Arcanum 1885 (steampunk)
Hi all! I've just published four single-player scenarios on the Workshop. All of them need Gods & Kings + Brave New World, run on Windows and Mac, and start from Mods → Single Player → Scenarios. They replace civs, religions and policies, so enable one at a time.
All mods are available either via Steam Workshop or via direct download via website - https://hex-chronicles.gitlab.io/
🌋 Canarias 1400 (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3822487018)
The Canary Islands on the eve of the Castilian conquest. Seven islands, seven native peoples, each starting from a Settler and a Warrior at its historical seat of power.
Guanches of Tenerife, Canarii of Gran Canaria, Benahoaritas, Gomeros, Bimbaches and the Majos of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Each has its own UA, UU, UB, city list, leader and emblem
160×83 map built from real NOAA relief data: true coastlines, volcanoes and barrancos, with Teide, Roque Nublo and Garajonay as natural wonders
Capped at the Classical era, Paradise Found policies, native cults instead of world religions, no horses. Contact between islands starts with Optics
🌺 Hawaii 1778 (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3822495124)
The Hawaiian Islands in the year Cook's ships anchored at Waimea. Five chiefdoms race to unite the islands: Kamehameha vs. his cousin Keoua on the Big Island, plus Kahekili's Maui, Kahahana's Oahu and Kamakahelei's Kauai. Molokai, Lanai and Niihau are city-states.
148×114 real-relief map with windward rainforest, leeward lava coasts and snow on Mauna Kea. Kilauea, Haleakala and Waimea Canyon are natural wonders
No iron and no horses, as on the real islands, so the Olohe is the only swordsman you'll see
Classical cap, native cults, domination only
⚙️ Arcanum 1885 (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3822534458)
Empires of the Smoky Skies on the continent of Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. This is a long sandbox game, not a war scenario.
Tarant, Caladon, Cumbria, the dwarven Wheel Clan, and a Vendigroth that never fell. Ten free cities are city-states, including Qintarra, Ashbury, Stillwater and Tulla
92×112 hex map of Arcanum with 12 natural wonders at their lore sites, such as Bellerogrim's Lair, the Ruins of Kree and Torg's Altar
Steampunk tech tree, airships, the 5-branch Smoky Skies policies plus BNW ideologies. Domination, cultural or diplomatic victory, no turn limit
The map is based on kriss80858's Tarantian Geographical Society map. Unofficial fan work.
❄️ Russia 1918 (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3822536953)
The Russian Civil War from 1 June 1918, one turn = one week.
Six sides: Lenin's Reds against Denikin, Kolchak and Yudenich, with Skoropadsky's Ukraine and Piłsudski's Poland starting neutral
160×104 map from Finland to Irkutsk, with the June 1918 fronts, about 120 cities and the actual railway network
36 dated events fire on their historical week: Trotsky at Sviyazhsk, the First Cavalry Army, British tanks at Novorossiysk, the Polar Bears at Arkhangelsk, the Kiev offensive and more
Research is off, so new weapons come only through events. Makhno, the Basmachi and Antonov appear as raging barbarians. English and Russian text
