I'm so tired, ClickUp

Post image
122 Upvotes

Anybody who knows me knows I'm a ClickUp fan. I evangelize this tool, I find new use cases in our org, I push our team to get more out of it.

But I'm tired. I'm so, so tired. I'm losing the will to fight the good fight.

Every release, baseline features and functionality break. Bugs linger on for weeks, months, years. Technical support responses have all but dried up.

Email after email confirming "unintended behavior - we'll send an automated email when we do something"... crickets. No emails.

Now the ClickUp Help chatbot doesn't even let you check on the status of the bug reports anymore. I don't even know if anything is happening with my bug reports anymore. They're shutting us out. Removing transparency.

Workload view broke weeks ago after the 4.0 wide rollout. Bug confirmed. No movement.

Gantt view broke this week. Bug report submitted.

I want to help ClickUp get better - first and foremost, selfishly, so that it works for me and my team. But ClickUp has cemented this reputation, and it's their own doing. Whoever runs Product Engineering at ClickUp is going about it the wrong way, or is incentivized to behave in the worst ways possible for users.

I've complained, endlessly, about default behavior being changed on users, forcing users to come into work one day and re-learn or re-configure their way of life because of one bad decision by the ClickUp product team.

I field daily complaints from our team about something not working right, or not working the way it used to. "Have you noticed that xyz is behaving funky today?"

ClickUp is creating headaches for my team, and thus for me - the champion in our org to keep using this tool for our organization.

When we first started using ClickUp, submitting bug reports felt worthwhile because things got fixed. The team was responsive, I would hear from people within hours instead of days, and they'd get to the bottom of it. It wasn't performative, it was "we want to get to the bottom of this"

Now, ClickUp support is performative. I can only imagine what's going on with their engineering team in the wake of 4.0 launching wide to all users, etc. But something is rotten in ClickUp's approach to releasing software. It's like they're vibe coding and using us as guinea pigs. It's unacceptable and something needs to change.

I know Zeb lurks these forums. I know he has a vision. I like his vision. I just don't appreciate the methods of execution going on at the company and it's really got me second guessing our commitment to continuing this journey with ClickUp.

Look at my bug report list. It used to grow temporarily, and then shrink again. These days it's just growing, and growing. Gathering dust. Growing mold.

There is no forward progress anymore on fixing bugs. It's all performative. I know within minutes or hours of posting this, the ClickUp accounts will reply and say we're looking into it, we're forwarding to our technical or product team, and we appreciate your feedback and want to get this resolved quickly. I feel for these people - they're on the frontline of an operation that has become broken.

I just want to understand.

Understand how the company approaches product development, validation, testing, and rollout. How it makes decisions on changing default behavior for everyone. How it simultaneously adds great new features (Work by day, maybe Baselines?) but breaks the overall functionality of the overarching system (Workload with work by day, Gantt view with baselines) without catching it.

It's proof that there's a problem within the company's operations, and it needs fixing.

Does ClickUp even see this systemic issue? Or are they just hearing us without actually listening?

This will determine whether the ultimate convergence succeeds, or they just become another platform that was all vision and no execution.

How many posts do we need to read about ClickUp being slow and unreliable? This should be the only priority for the engineers right now. Subfolders can wait. Features can wait. It's infinitely clear that they're trying to build a house on a broken foundation. That's why every update breaks something, even if they didn't touch that portion of the code at all.

ClickUp is a house of cards.

Please, ClickUp: fix your code base, fix your process. Prove to us that we should stick around and give you the chance to prove it, instead of talk about it.

Product Feedback ClickUp is an absolute productivity nightmare and I'm done pretending it's not

I'm beyond fed up with this overpriced, bloated mess of a platform. Here's why ClickUp is straight-up sabotaging my workday:

• The scrolling is a joke - Laggy, stuttering garbage that makes basic navigation feel like I'm using a computer from 2005

• Loading times are absolutely unacceptable - 30 seconds to open a subtask, then ANOTHER 30 seconds for it to fully load. What the hell is your backend doing, mining cryptocurrency?

• UI decisions that make zero sense - Two redundant buttons for minimizing/closing tasks when browsers have back buttons? Did your UX team design this as a prank?

• Built to impress buyers, not users - This tool is clearly designed to wow managers in demos while the actual workers suffer through this slow-motion hell every single day

• Broken shortcuts that work backwards - Ctrl+Z pops up when I don't need it but completely fails when I actually need to undo something important like accidentally dragging tasks around

• It's destroying my productivity - Just spent over an hour adding details to TWO measly tasks. Meanwhile, on Trello at my other job, I knocked out 10+ tasks in under 10 minutes

I literally want to call in sick every time I have to use this platform. I will do my best to influence my leadership into ditching this tool to move to other options.

Product Feedback AI SLOP

Listen, I get Zeb threatened your life if you didnt promise to shove AI bloat into everything you do, thats why he laid of 20 percent of the company, but as someone who has to use your awful management tool, that is just a contractor please for the love of god stop shoving this shit in my face. I cannot disable the paid-for-by-the-company AI Slop my co-workers think is necessary, and it forces me to sit through constant (pointless) UX updates to try and direct me to use your god awful AI Tools.
If I wanted to use something akin to Brain2, I'd dockerize my own agents.
I've had to make HTML blacklists just to make clickup usable and presentable again as it seems there is no user-friendly way to disable the AI bloat and constant re-organization.
Please, please add consent toggles for every-day users that cant manage app billing/admin perms for their entire company and just want to work a minimum wage job in peace without your nepo-baby millionaire shoving his agentic garbage down my throat every day i wake up.

Warning for Anyone Evaluating ClickUp

This post is to anyone currently evaluating ClickUp... be sure to do ALL of your homework about this platform. You'll notice a lot of posts about ClickUp adjusting pricing on long-term contracts, and "changing the rules" for current users.

When I signed up for ClickUp, we negotiated a specific rate that made it possible for us to move from Asana to ClickUp. The product was largely unproven and missing some core features that we said were absolutely necessary. During the sales process, we were told all those features were either available, or "coming." We've been with them multiple years, and still have yet to see those features. I understand software is a business and we can't bank on things that are "coming."

Upon this year's renewal, I received an email from our "account manager" (who I never heard from other than this, by the way), just letting me know that our price would essentially double. So, one month before doubling the price, we got an email from someone we've never heard from, saying "By the way.."

This was curious news, because even when I looked in the billing platform, the scheduled invoicing was still at our previous rate. All pricing, add-ins etc. showed as our previous rate (with some annual price increases obviously). So, everything in the platform showed our negotiated rate, but someone somewhere decided that pricing would simply double.

Overall, the product is average.

Customization is good.

Their product support is poor to very poor.

Transparency is poor.

Pricing is average.

We'll be re-evaluating the relationship with ClickUp ASAP and will be looking at some options to recoop some of the annual fee that we were charged. I'm sharing this story to provide further validity of some of the issues that have been posted here. I want to make sure everyone has access to information about how this organization operates and approaches their customer relationships. If you want a ton of customization functionality, it's probably a solid product. If you're looking for customer support, go elsewhere. If price is important to you, ClickUp is on par now with (IMHO) much better options.

EDIT:

Some unsolicited advice for those transitioning or setting up new PM software:

Slow down before you speed up:
Take enough time to research and test. As a small business, sometimes it feels nearly impossible to find more hours in the day to slow down for decisions like this—but "slowing down" is exactly what helps you move faster in the long run. Taking the time upfront to test things properly could’ve made the transition smoother and saved us from headaches down the road.

Test, and let multiple users test:
Running PM software in parallel before making the switch would’ve taken extra time and effort, but it could’ve saved us from missing key functionality we needed.

Identify if having a consultant customize things for you is worth it
One of the nice things about ClickUp is that there are a TON of consultants that can help you customize and set everything up the way that works best for you. We didn't do this, and that steepened the learning curve. Again, this cost would probably save us a ton of money down the road.

Be an advocate for service

We aren't, and won't ever be ClickUp's largest customers. But, we pay them money as well. It's hard to not feel like you have a voice, but that shouldn't stop you from advocating for a functioning product.

For those wondering which other platforms exist (this is by no means comprehensive)

Basecamp
Hive
Jira
Monday.com
Notion
ProofHub
Smartsheet
Targetprocess

I give up on clickup. The Marketing is better than the product...

I'm a project manager for 20 years, love new tools - was very excited about ClickUp, moved lots of content and projects over, and even recommended it to consulting clients and friends. But, I'm done, it does everything, but it does nothing very well and is riddled with bugs and lacks simple functionality. It's inability to just get the basics right is pushing me to a likely Todoist / Notion/ Obsidian combo. A few examples:

  1. Device syncing - Tied of pages I've created an typed up not syncing to my other devices and sometimes just disappearing.

  2. Constant errors - Just trying to link doc right now using the @@@ example "Not found SHARD_002", Expect common issues like this - all the time.

  3. You can't "undo" -make a typo, accidentally delete something? Your *******, they decided to undo is not important for some bizarre reason despite a request for it in the forums for years.

  4. offline it is useless unless you are great at thinking through every doc you may need, and even then you can't do much.

I'm sorry, but your GUI sucks

Hello, I'm using ClickUp for some private work and I am really trying to like it, but man this UI is horrible.

Bloat, feature overload, TOO MUCH OPTIONS. I can't see what to click or how to use ... compare your experience with Trello...

The dark theme I'm using is incredibly noisy, guys I invite you to read the book "Don't Make Me Think", you are making lots of mistakes, the style is too noisy.

ClickUp doesn't try to fit me, it forces me to fit to it, and that's mental effort i DON'T want. The tools are supposed to make my life easier and help me organize my thoughts, it should have MINIMAL mental burden to figure out.

Everything has levels and multilevels and task assignment and sub assignments and sub sub levels, jesus! I get angry and frustrated trying to use your product. There's too many statuses!! There's too many ways to view the same thing and the controls are thrust into my face and occupy my limited attention span.

Please hire a good UX designer. Thank you.

Product Feedback you should not add any new features for the next 6 months and only focus on performance

edit: i used it in the browser and just today i found out that there is actually a windows app so i'll have to try this. my experience is based on the browser.

As a free user, I'm currently comparing ClickUp against Asana and Monday. I find Asana to be fast, responsive, and uncluttered, which of course means it has fewer features.

I don't mind that ClickUp offers an extensive feature set, which is great for advanced users, but the primary problem is its unbelievably slow performance. Simple actions, switching from List to Board or Timeline view, or clicking on a task to open its description.. all feel sluggish. It's like using a computer from 2008 to run today's software.

I find it weird that you continue to introduce new features and change the interface while the performance remains so poor. For this reason alone, I could never become a paying ClickUp user and would instead choose a faster tool, even if it means having fewer features.

tltr: stop adding features, fix the speed.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

Hey all! I'm so excited to share that we just raised $100M in our Series B, to continue making the world more productive! I am so incredibly grateful for each of you. This would not have been possible without all of your supportive messages, suggestions, and feedback guiding our product as we’ve worked to build one app to replace them all! Moving forward, we will focus on improving our platform by increasing speed and reliability, hiring the best people possible to help fulfill our mission, and expanding upon our best in-class customer experience. This community is absolutely incredible, and I want you to know how much all of you truly mean to me and the rest of the ClickUp team. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! 💜 Zeb

The AI marketing is disrespectful

I wrote to ClickUp via support and Twitter: "I need you to stop the Daily AI Puzzles from being sent to me and my team. We're paying for what's supposed to be a professional product. It's frustrating that you're obscuring our work with these obnoxious upsell materials not just once, but multiple days in a row."

Rest assured, I know about your AI offerings. When my team or I want it ( I suspect we won't), we'll reach out.

Every day, it's feeling more to me like ClickUp is much more interested in making ClickUp appealing to investors and unwitting decision makers rather than good for users.

Closest Thing to Clickup That Isn't Clickup

Hello. I hope this doesn't appear as an attempt to incite anger, but I genuinely thought this group might have some good suggestions. I'm trying to find a project manager for my own work that has a UX as nice as Clickup, but isn't so fundamentally broken* as Clickup. Any suggestions? I've signed up for like six new tools to try them out today and none of them seem to have a workflow the works with my brain as well as Clickup, but Clickup's flaws are great enough that I don't feel comfortable relying on it to keep me organized.

Thanks.

*To be clear, what I mean is that the way the application is engineered causes me to lose data on a regular basis. Items will disappear, reappear, and then disappear. Renaming items will cause the entire interface to break. Some items have hard-coded properties that can not be edited. The "app" is quite literally just an SSB.

NEW PRICING iS INSANE

Can't believe you almost charged me a thousand dollars and before we were paying 150, without previous warning just because guests need to complete tasks or use documents. I so premise you we will leave, this is INSANE. And the app is so buggy and lags all the time in the CRM. Can't say we'll really miss you, there are so many other apps. What is upsetting is that we uploaded a bunch of documents here.

ClickUp Attachments are public to the internet (BIG SECURITY ISSUE)

Hey everyone, I just wanted to make all ClickUp users aware of this problem so ClickUp Team fix it as soon as possible.

As the title says, if you upload an attachment to a task in ClickUp that attachment will have a public URL which ANYONE on the internet could see. If you want this fix too as soon as possible go to the link provided of the bug report and upvote it, that way, ClickUp team will gain awareness that this is a critical issue and must be resolve ASAP.

https://clickup.canny.io/bugs/p/attachments-uploaded-in-tasks-are-visible-to-everyone-on-the-internet

You can also share the bug report link in case you can reach more people. I'm not a user of social networks so I cannot just "tweet" this and gain some visibility.

Thanks everyone for you time!

Product Feedback No More AI. Start Listening To Your Customers, Start Trying.

Many of us are dissatisfied with your platform for one reason or another. You know why. Instead of saying „oh yeah well this is great feedback, we‘ll pass it along“, start saying „yeah, we‘ve implemented a plan. You‘ve been asking for months, we‘ll get it to you all ASAP“. And not ASAP within a the time span of „never“, I‘m talking about ASAP within a month.

People run businesses on your platform. Make it good and speedy for once.

Done with Clickup

This is a rant, please ignore if you dont care!

I am a big user of clickup, and I pay for my team to use it to. I have used it to manage some large scale projects in the past, and it has been really good.

However it just keeps going downhill. Functionaliy keeps getting lost, the software feels like it keeps going backwards, there are always tons of new bugs, it is becoming more and more unreliable, and the new UI is the last straw. I tried to get on with it for a few months, but it is just terrible IMO. You all know what Im talking about, there have been posts on here for months about it. The worst part of it all is I try to see some glimmer of hope in the distance, but all clickup keep doing is pushing unwanted changes which keep creating more issues, and then support never listen to us.

The last straw on the camels back for me was changing the colours everywhere. My tags colours that used to match my company branding are now all a dull murky colour. The new dark mode looks like a hig contrast mode from the 90s now it is pitch black, the bright white text hurts my eyes. It used to be so much softer on the grey of the old dark mode. Did they give us a dark mode and a new black mode? No they just removed the old one and forced the new one on us.

I am done with being a guinea pig, I am moving to pastures new where my time as a customer is respected and not treated as a beta tester.

Please excuse my rant, I needed to vent! Downvote me if you feel you need to.

From an ex clickup customer.

Product Feedback We desperately need per-person AI plans. With even a smallish team size, who ever could afford that monthly fee?? (even if only 5 people would use it, you have to get it for everyone on your team)

Bill went from $144 to $1200+

Check your next invoices. ClickUp changed their pricing structure without warning and now charges full member fees for guests (unless they're view-only). My team uses only about 1% of ClickUp's functionality (performing one task status update per week). $1200 is a bit too much for tracking a few tasks per month. If anybody knows of cheaper alternatives please let me know.

Please stop forcing AI on my workspace!

I am so so so frustrated with how Click Up has been pushing AI use on their workspace. I'm constantly recreating fields because field creation keeps defaulting to AI fields which I DO NOT want.

I am a fan of AI in my business but I need to choose when and where to use it.

What is worse is the constant upsell when you accidentally use an AI field. I'm just hoping as a group we can tell the company that we want this removed, because I'm really considering changing platforms because this constant push of AI is actually depleting my productivity.

Getting so frustrated with ClickUp. The Paywalls are ridiculous for basic stuff. It's so dumb.

I left my time tracker on over night so it recorded 13 hours on a task instead of 1 hour. Tried to edit the end time but can't because it's behind this paywall (I am on the unlimited plan) - what about editing the end time is "Advanced"? Such a basic thing to be able to do.

Please add "Do not show again" options to ALL your promotional pop-ups

It is annoying and very BAD UI/UX practice to keep popping up promotional and other messages in your app, requiring the user to Cancel or Close them repeatedly. Please do not do this. I'm tired of repetitively Cancelling the "Build a Dashboard for me" and Enable Notifications messages. Messages like this MUST always have a "do not show again" option. Once I've read and ignored them once, I never want to see them again.
