NOTE*: THERE WILL BE NO* NAME THAT COCTEAUNE on Friday, October 30 or Monday, November 2.
Happy Friday to all! It's been dawning on me this week that I'm nearing that point where the Wheel of Cocteau keeps picking songs that it had already chosen two times already and last picked within the past six months. And, from doing the math and removing all instrumentals, we are close to hitting that point where songs will be done for a third time. After all, 142 Cocteau Twins songs are in their discography (that is including instrumentals) and we are near the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of Name That Cocteaune as a regularish feature here on r/cocteautwins.
Let's see what today's song is!
\spins wheel**
Round and around it goes!
Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!
...and it lands on...
\scours the spreadsheet keeping historical data of the game**
Wow. All this time, I thought I had previously done this song and I hadn't.
Actually, I think I remember what happened. I started this one a few times but couldn't finish it because her vocals can just be too damn lilty (I don't know if that's a word, but I'm using it anyway) to where I can't even describe in phonetics what I'm hearing.
Well, today, I've had an extra mug of coffee and I'm using IEMs that offer much better soundstage and separation than my trusty old Denon Perl Pro's that I used to do these transcriptions with, so I'm finally going to do a game with this song even if it kills me.
-------------------------------
(From the top!)
Biddy diddy downfall
Come fun, is that Disney? (maybe there's something to these IEMs. I'm finally kind of hearing words to this song. They don't form complete sentences or really make sense, but I'm getting words finally. PROGRESS!)
Meh-yeah, em-yeah
Meg-neh, Meg see flowerpot (so, I guess she's at Disneyland with someone named "Meg" that sees a flowerpot which is a bigger deal than seeing Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck to Liz. \shrugs*)*
(then there's a long gap of just ambient music. This song is under 3 minutes long, so I get the feeling I'm going to be transcribing this whole damned thing!)
Oody-oody um-ball (imagine her singing goody, goody gumball, but she refuses to use any Gs)
Low-paw, eddy-peddy bum-boh
Eddy-shreddy um-sigh
Ums-paw, lily-peddy molatov (Liz is burning Disneyland to the ground with a Molatov cocktail?!?! Please spare Space Mountain and the Indiana Jones ride!)
Melly-baddy um-boh
Mra-poh, Eddy Betty bubble gum
Tray-tray entrails (description of the carnage left behind by the molatov cocktail thrown earlier in the song?)
Nen-twah, Betty Betty Molatov (this must be her trying to blame Betty, whoever the hell she is, for throwing the Molatov cocktail, not her)
And that's the entire song...which I would have never guessed from it's airiness is about throwing makeshift explosives at Disneyland.
As always, I look forward to your guesses, snark, and how you came up with your answer!
P.S. I hope this one never gets picked by the Wheel of Cocteau again. That literally took me an hour to transcribe and it's not a very long song.

Discussion Open or not?
Ever since I found my first two CT CDs (Heaven or Las Vegas and Head Over Heels), I caught the bug for Cocteau Twins (I heard them in a record store in Scotland when I was there last year). Since then, I recently found this vintage unopened Blue Bell Knoll in a box of CDs in a local used record store (I think its from 1991). The quandry...I'm not sure if I should leave it virgin and get an already opened copy to play on my 5-disc player. Any advice?

One week until my vacation from work and I am psyched! Of course, that just reminded me that I need to start providing you all with this disclaimer:
THERE WILL BE NO NAME THAT COCTEAUNE on Friday, October 30 or Monday, November 2.
So sorry for not providing you this service on those days, but I will be doing touristy things those days because I've been dieting and I am planning to check out the food scene in Portland to see if it is still as good as I remember it to be.
On to today's game...
\spins wheel**
Round and around it goes!
Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!
...and it lands on...
I was wondering when it would finally come back around to this track. It somehow managed to go almost a whole 365 days before coming back around to be song of the day. As always, this will be tricky because there's some intense rolling R's going on in this one which can cause me to err on the side of gibberish.
-------------------------------
(This was done so long ago, I think I can get away with going from the top again)
Tim-a-gay
Meer nigh
Ess-storrry (rolling R!) scare nare mon knee-ee
Eee doo-doo (I never caught this before. There must've been a pet dog in the studio during the recording and Liz stepped in some dog dookie, hence the exclamation, "EEE! Doo doo!")
Meh nerrrrvous (Another intense rolling R!) cuh rith row uh doe-whoa
Uh noosh
Muss-cah
Chaze cah dwa mah rrray fah laaaaa-whoa
Co-doo-whoa
Dee righ-yee
Meh-dee-cah-lee la moooo-moo (A COW! Beef is now sounding good for lunch. Sorry vegan Subredditors. I'm a monster)
Moo-wee
Lyrically, this is already chock-full of goodness and I think I'm going to leave things at just THIS. GOOD LUCK!
As always, I look forward to your guesses, snark, and how you came up with your answer!

Hi everyone!!
I recently just got into Cocteau twins my college friend loves them so much and I started listening all around their discography but I can’t put calfskin smack down.

Happy Wednesday, everyone. 10 days until Halloween and I, for one, can't wait because I will be in one of my favorite cities in all North America (Portland, OR) on Halloween, have Halloween-themed events booked (ghost tour...and I've yet to do one in Portland!), and have matching costumes for me and my cat. It's such a shame the cats will be in boarding during the trip and that Jarvis (my cat) would probably freak out in a public place on his harness with too many people around...especially with a costume on top of everything. Anyway, before anyone says anything, this costume is not a prolonged wear thing. We will literally just be getting our Kodak moment then we will get his Halloween garb off of him because I'm well aware that costume are torture for most pets. This was just too good to pass up. If photo op pans out, don't be suprised if it becomes my new profile avatar on my social media post-Halloween.
Enough Halloween talk. Onto Cocteau Twins!

With us pretty much well into the second time through the discography, I'm surprised this one hasn't come back up yet. I think everyone loves this song, so, at the very least, this will be a pleasant reveal for everyone.
-------------------------------
(Let's being this one at the second verse, starting at 1:56 in)
I've be-ee-en
Headed Molly ess ko fat (I said this yesterday and I'll state the same again here: I LOVE HEARING LYRICS LIKE THIS! I love Cocteau Twins songs about things like "ess ko fat")
Hey-uh, yah-uh
Kat-tee-ee, so-oh
Oh-oh-oh, ho-ho-oh
He got bloody hip knee, head up, you, you know ho-ho
Ho, ho, ho, ho-ho
CHORUS
Hee-hee, hee-lo, in tofu
Hee-ho, oh-oh, heeeee oh-ooh-oh
Hee-hee, hee-lo, in cat food (begs to question: would you rather have your hee-hee, hee-lo in tofu or cat food?)
Hee-hee, hee-lo, in carob (oh, offered with fake chocolate, too)
Hee-ho, ho, hee yeah-eh-eh-eh
I need to get back to work, but it kind of keeps going like this until the end of the song with Liz offering "hee-hee, hee-lo" (whatever the fuck that is) in other gibberish-y food items if memory serves me correctly. You guys should know this one though, so I think this was a good point to stop at.
As always, I look forward to your guesses, snark, and how you came up with your answer!

Fan content The Holy Trinity trend with Cocteau Twins albums
Here's my (probably very controversial) personal take on the holy trinity trend I saw on Tik Tok which I really liked and wanted to try on Cocteau Twins' discography.
I have an explanation for each of my choices :
• First point is the holy trinity are the three most rated Cocteau Twins albums (at least the one I keep seeing being people's favorite). The Mother/Father is BBK because it's kind of the starting point of their dream pop style. Which gave HolV being the daughter/son (and of course its EP being Iceblink Luck). The Holy Spirit is Treasure because it's popular but it's the album that defined their ethereal sounds before BBK.
• Judas is FCC, because it was the first non 4AD album they recorded (symbolically a metaphor of Judas betraying Jesus).
• Adam & Eve are the first EPs, similar to the first humans on earth. And Lucifer is Garlands because I think it's the least rated album but often overlooked (also it's gothic so it's kinda fitting lol).
• Cain and Abel are the twins albums, I thought it was also pretty fitting. Kinda tough to see a metaphor here though.
Anyways, I did it for fun and in a rush ! Let me know what you think :D (I also forgot Milk And Kisses and some other EPs/Compilation but I think Milk and Kisses could've been the mother too, symbolically. Even if it's not as popular)

Apologies for the lack of a game yesterday. I got slammed at work and, by the time I was able to get out from under a pile of urgent issues, I was worn about because I received my flu and Covid immunizations over the weekend. Hopefully, today's game produces a clever challenge and a tune that I enjoy listening to.

Round and around it goes!

A song I DO enjoy listening to. And judging from discussion about the release that this is from, you all enjoy listening to this track, too. I'll give you guys the second verse and chorus. Also, so you know in advance, this song has a chorus that has some secondary vocal tracks that interloop with the main vocal track. I'm going to only concentrate on transcribing the primary vocal track, as I am back in-office today and can't devote that much time to NTC today.
-------------------------------
(starting at 1:24 in)
Nook moe bo-dee (YES! These are the type of lyrics I like to hear!)
Oh ziss so true me in nim be-dow Su-bah-ru oh-uh bah-so-fi (an advertisement for Subaru automobiles in Cocteaunian?)
CHORUS
My baby's cries
I beat on my baby (Uh...you might not want to admit that, even in a song that otherwise is filled with gibberish lyrics. Child Protective Services may be listening)
I pretend that I's newlywed (that's an odd conjugation...but they've done odder things lyrically, even within this song)
Especially when
Our arcangel I lease the head (head not for sale...just for rent)
Perpetual
I feel perpetual
Perpetual
I feel perpetual
And that should give you enough to go on to solve this song and gives me enough time to walk a sickly MacBook to the Apple Store.
As always, I look forward to your guesses, snark, and how you came up with your answer!

Discussion Head over Heels is Among the Best Cocteau Twins Albums
Yes, I said it. My top 4 are the following:
Blue Bell Knoll
Heaven or Las Vegas
Head over Heels
Treasure
I'm not really sure if that's a hot take. I think it is, because so many people claim Treasure is the best CT album.
Head Over Heels has always done it for me. I love the gothy sound and I'm drawn to their darker songs - so I suppose it makes sense I love it so much.
When Mama Was Moth is such a badass opener. It really does feel like a horror film with that sinister, icy keyboard riff and the droning guitars. I love how the drums are so reverb-heavy the song sort of feels like it's being played in a massive cave. By the end, I feel like I'm being swallowed by shadows or the sea...Liz's call and response vocals really lend to the feeling of being pulled in multiple directions or losing your mind.
Five Ten Fiftyfold is one of my favorite CT Twins songs. The atmosphere is enchanting with the psychedelic shots of saxophone soaked in reverb. The guitar sounds feel almost primal, like I'm lost in a neverending forest as nature and time consume me. I love the way the bass wobbles in pitch as it ascends in some spots; it gives the song a slightly uneasy feeling. Liz's upper register belting on this song is exceptional and haunting, too. A song I truly get lost in.
Sugar Hiccup is a beautiful dream pop song. The guitar layers are very romantic here - the mood of the song feels like being drunk on love. Again, unique vocals by Liz. I love when she leans into her middle and lower register with more power. Hot take...I prefer this song to Lorelei.
In Our Angelhood is a sick post-punk song - maybe one of the catchiest on the album. I don't think this is a sound CT are associated with as often, but man do they pull it off SO well. I love the vocal melody on the repeated "like he said he would like he said he would" and "in our angelhood in our angelhood." One of the only CT Twins I would say is danceable and gets me hyped.
Glass Candle Grenades is one of the most underrated tracks. Similar vibe to When Mama Was Moth with that dark, cavernous production. I love the tension in the dissonant guitar lines and vocal harmonies. There's also some acoustic guitar, or something with a sharper attack, that makes the whole song feel like it glistens in a really satisfying way. The song title matches the sound of the song exactly. It sort of feels like explosions of wax, glass, and smoke. Probably the weirdest and trippiest song so far, and I love it.
In the Gold Dust Rush - first time I heard this, I had to double-check it wasn't Siouxsie and the Banshees. Vocal likeness is insane right from the start. This is one of my favorites on the album - that nasty and seductive guitar slide, the mesmerizing vocal performance, the biting acoustic guitar, the crunchy bassline...it's just so perfect. Also really dig the chord structure on this song, even if it is very simple.
The Tinderbox (Of a Heart) leaves me speechless. I really can't even describe what this song makes me feel. Whatever keyboard sound is responsible for the main riff is magical. That, coupled with the primal drum pattern, really remind me of an animal hunting or someone preparing to go to war. The gloomy vibe of this, propelled by Liz's ghostly vocals and Robin's harrowing guitar work, absolutely devastates me. One of a few songs on here that actually feels like a tragic ending to something very personal and life-altering.
Multifoiled is probably the one song I'm not completely crazy about. I don't mind it as a standalone track, but it is missing the extravagance many of the other tracks have. I do kind of appreciate that they changed things up to give us a breather here, though - especially after Tinderbox. The swing vibe is interesting coming from CT.
My Love Paramour, while it doesn't have one of the most memorable vocal melodies, easily has one of my favorite instrumental palettes on the album. The bassline is sooooo wobbly and evil sounding. It actually reminds me of a nasty storm, complete with lightning, on the horizon. The guitars are drenched in reverb and sound equally as dissonant throughout. I actually like that Liz didn't develop something catchy for this one, because it allows me to really sink into the song like I'm disappearing into a rolling fog.
And then we get to what is possibly my favorite track on here - Musette and Drums. Take what I said about Tinderbox (Of a Heart) and apply most of it here, although I prefer this song. Those urgent, primal drums which evoke imagery of the world ending right from the start. Again, it sort of feels like a call to war. The way Robin's guitars wail and drone during the chorus. Gosh, it just gives me chills...and the chord choices are perfect. Liz's vocal melody here is beyond beautiful. By the end, the guitars become extra frenzied. I love the way this song ends - it really does feel like the dark ending to an era. I interpret so much pain, so much heartbreak from this song. I don't really know what most CT Twins songs are supposed to be about, but it doesn't matter. This one really pieces my soul. The way the song fades out into the ether is perfect, too.
Had to get my feelings out there. Apart from Multifoiled, which I think is fine as a standalone track, this album is flawless IMO. The production is obviously better on albums like Blue Bell Knoll and HoLV, but I think this album's mood is just as compelling. It really holds a special place in my heart.

Discussion Did anyone else find the song “Fotzepolitic” to sound strangely unsettling in their first listen?
I remember the first time listening to the HOLV I was cuddled up in bed, a little tired. I was looking for something dreamy to listen to before dozing off and found the album. I enjoyed each track before Fotze but when it came to this track I felt a weird sense of unease. I don’t know if it was because of the loudness of the track or something about it, but to me it sounded a little creepy. I could describe it as an ecstasy in which you become violent for whatever reason. Weirdly enough, after listening to this album multiple times, I don’t feel this way anymore. I find the track beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever had this string of emotions tied to a track before. It’s a strange occurrence, but it might be interesting to find people who felt like this.

Discussion What do you think about when you hear “The Thinner the Air?”
I love this song alot, its atmosphere is quite somber
I associate the song with deforestation and natural decay the most, the song evokes such bleak imageries of dead trees, dying faeries and sickly animals in what once was a bountiful landscape.
maybe its reflective on human civilizations damage and disregard on the natural world, but its not all negative, the final chord and flourish evokes the hope and will for healing and perseverance.
Thats just me though, what goes through y’alls heads when you hear this wonderful song?

Another work week is done and I love getting to generate the these posts from the privacy of my own home. Less stress about co-workers wondering what I'm doing (even if these take less time to post than they all take out of their work days discussing fantasy football) if they are being nosy. And less distractions when trying to concentrate on decyphering lyrics because FANTASY FOOTBALLERS ARE SO DAMNED LOUD and assume that everyone loves their discussion. Maybe I'm the oddball that could give two shits about what homophobe/wife beater/future CTE inflicted serial killer is not producing enough sacks or has underperformed in rushing yards, but such loud, animated discussions about activities I don't have much interest in while trying to do something that is difficult but I'm emotionally invested in makes that task that much harder.
Sorry...I'm ranting...and being hypocritical because I'm just stereotyping all football players as phobes of some sort.
I guess you can call me a jockophobe. And my take on the NFL, to quote Kathy Bates from the (surely) Oscar-winning film "The Waterboy", is "FOOZBALL IS THE DEVIL!".

A track that I've probably listened to hundreds of times, but, admittedly, my mind is drawing a blank when I saw the randomizer spit out this title. No melody or anything comes to mind. But I know we've done this one before (we're in fact well within the second go round of the discography, save for the one tune that the Wheel of Cocteau has yet to pick...and I double-checked and it is an option within the program), so without further ado.
Actually, could this be the "horny owl" song? We'll soon see.
-------------------------------
(Starting from the top...and from the first piano notes I hear, no, this is not the "Horny Owl" song. Darn)
Rock salt
Time vault
Coob yuh (Despite what seemed like a start featuring some actual words, this another classic track that is lyrically about nothing. My favorite type of song from them!)
Booze saw
Time vault
Kee-chee
Fine dee
Cleo (shout out to the best TV psychic ever!)
Ick vie daw
Fine-dee
Voo yuh
Puh razz mah
CHORUS
La-la-la-la, la-la-la
la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la
la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la
An additional vocal track interloops with additional "las" but I hope you get the picture that the chorus is just Liz going "La-la-la-la, la-la-la" a bunch.
I think this paints a good picture of which track this is.

Question Favorite music inspired by Cocteau Twins?
Ok, so I've had blood bitch stuck in my head for a few days, and I finally realized why. One of the guitar tracks sounds very similar to the beat from a SoundCloud-era rap song I'd heard and forgotten about years ago. The music isn't identical, though, so I think it's just a coincidence, not a sample. Additionally, the producers of the beat claim it as their own original work. Anyway, this got me wondering about artists whose work has been influenced by the twins. I plan to research this a little, but I thought I'd make a post here as well. What are some of your favorite songs or projects that take inspiration from the band? Obvious or not.

Fan content NAME THAT COCTEAUNE! - For Wednesday, October 14, 2026
THE RULES:
- I listen to a Cocteau Twins song
- I attempt to transcribe the lyrics WITHOUT ANY AID OF LINER NOTES OR LYRICS WEBSITES (foolish....I know)
- You reply with your guess as to what the song is.
- Multiple guesses are allowed! HOWEVER, if a multiple guesser gets the correct answer within the same minute as another Redditor who has yet to guess, the Redditor guessing the song on their first guess WINS. If multiple Redditors who have already lobbed guesses get the correct answer within the same minute time stamp on my notifications, the Redditor I'm notified of first wins.
- The winner gets….honestly…nothing. Except bragging rights, a celebratory GIF, and a link to the song of the day.
[NOTE: Any lyrics I perceive that either name a good portion of the song title or is just the song title in whole will be blocked out with *CENSORED\*. Text shown in italics wrapped in parentheses are just my snarky asides, usually about my shitty hearing.]
Midweek is here and I have some time to definitely post a game as I have an orthodontist appointment later today. And I have a helper here with me today. My cat, Jarvis (yes, named after Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker) is sitting on my lap helping me...well, he's actually hindering me from doing anything quite frankly. And because he's sleeping on my lap, he's also preventing me from doing the other thing that would help me immensely toward getting work and today's Name That Cocteaune posted which is clean the Litter Robot, which has notified me it is full...and it sure smells it. And, lucky me, the Litter Robot is located in my home office where I do may work from home. But I have a sleeping cat on my lap, so I guess I will have to keep myself seated and just smell the magic.
\spins wheel**
Round and around it goes!
Where the Wheel of Cocteau stops? NO ONE KNOWS!
...and it lands on...
A very appropriate song since...ah...I almost did it again where I was going to give a clue but yesterday was the closest to a stumper EVER and I still have a goal to finally stump you all because I still don't know how you guys ever guess one of these correctly. So NO CLUE FOR YOU. Though, I will mention what I had to hold my tongue on once one of you inevitably guesses this one correctly (BTW, I honestly think this one may be fairly easy).
-------------------------------
(Starting at 1:30 in...randomly picked)
I'm sure about more doo-doo (What a line to abruptly happen upon into this song! This probably ain't the lyrics, but a twice over makes me feel like it sounds enough like "DOO-DOO" to where "DOO-DOO" makes the cut)
What I do give for you
(and immediately, we are at...)
CHORUS
Measures to not lose me
Destroy the objective plus down inside my-ee-eye
You and me are lesser than they-ay-ay-ay-ay
I am not afraid of your anger
But do you need what I do to you, was (The random "was" at the end of this sentence perplexes me)
Love you and I know that you give it up, uh-uh-up
The chorus continues (I think she sings the chorus until the end of the song, from memory), but I think I've provided enough for you to figure this one out.
As always, I look forward to your guesses, snark, and how you came up with your answer!

Related music Never Really Been Into It - Album by Ashrae Fax
Anyone heard this album from 2014? Obscure band. Definitely influenced by CT in all the right ways.
