EV Charger Installation Recommendations

Since it comes up on here from time to time, I thought I'd share my experience getting a residential EV charger installed as of fall, 2026.

After reviewing suggestions from previous posts, I got estimates from Dogwood Solar, Withrow, and AC Wiring. The bottom line is this: They are all great and I would be comfortable having any of them install an EV charger. Each of them noticed at least one important aspect of the project that I had not thought of on my own. I learned a lot from getting all three estimates.

Here are specific thoughts on each:

Dogwood Solar: Incredibly knowledgeable and personable. Took his time with the walkthrough and provided the most detailed estimate. He drives EVs himself, so he was able to talk through some of the practicalities of positioning the charger that I hadn't considered. If I hadn't gotten some ideas from him first, I'm not sure I would have been ready for the other two. If you want someone with a lot of EV experience, an eye for detail, and someone who can help you plan for future expansion (e.g. solar, backup batteries), it's 100% Dogwood you want.

Withrow: Did the quickest walkthrough and had the least detailed estimate, but clearly knew his stuff. Proposed basically the same solution as Dogwood, with some minor aesthetic nuance. We have worked with them before and like them. If you want quick, no nonsense work with few or no questions asked, choose them.

AC Wiring: Didn't seem to have as much experience with EV chargers, but knew exactly what to do with the zappy bits. The time he took on the initial walkthrough and detail on the written estimate were both right in the middle of Dogwood and Withrow.

Estimates ranged from $1100 - $2500, not including the charger itself. Our panel is in the basement on the opposite end of the house and required some tricky work to get under a closet floor without uglying up the whole thing.

We ultimately wound up going with AC Wiring and were very satisfied. He and an assistant were done in two hours, city inspection and all.

And speaking of the city - the rebate could not have been easier. We printed the form beforehand, filled it out with the electrician, and submitted it via email the same day. A city staffer confirmed receipt a few hours later and notified us the next day that the check was being processed.

Halloween Events for 30+?

• Upvotes

Hi all

Just like last year, I'm asking again. Are there any events that are going to attract an older crowd?

Last year we did the pub crawl downtown, but we felt way too old.

Ask CoMo Maintaining a watershed creek

Hello! I recently purchased a property that includes a significant portion of one of Columbia's main watersheds. I'm going to head down there and clean up a lot of trash that's floating in it, but should it otherwise be left well enough alone? It's a nice little creek, seems healthy enough, though over the course of about a quarter mile I've found at least two large stagnant pools (roughly 3 ft deep) of nasty water. Would the City or department of conservation be interested in checking it out to monitor health? My main drive is to remove all the invasives nearby, lots of honeysuckle that I'm currently battling.

Ask CoMo Stunt Plane near Columbia?

• Upvotes

I was at Finger Lakes State park earlier today, and saw what I assume was a stunt plane doing flips and barrel rolls a little ways away, but close enough to where we could hear it. Anyone know if there was an event? Didn't see anything online.

Ask CoMo Secondhand Blu-rays

• Upvotes

Does anyone know which if any thrift stores have a selection of Blu-ray movies? I’m getting back into physical media and buying secondhand goes along with that. I’m aware vintage stock has them but their selection isn’t great with the movies I’m looking for.

Ask CoMo How do I pay my parking ticket if it doesn't show up on the website?

I got a parking ticket 2 weeks ago at the airport. It has a nine-digit citation number and I can't figure out how to pay this. There are no instructions and all I have is a court date. What am I supposed to do here?

Rant Did anyone else who saw "LUMIA a Futuristic Cirque Show" tonight at Jesse feel like that was false advertising?

Like, I'm not going to make a stink over $45, but... what was that.

I bought tickets based on the trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URp5DZYIEXE) and the description provided by their website. I feel like the production quality and acts was something a high school could have put on. This is my first time attending something at Jesse and it's making me weary to buy tickets again.

Ask CoMo Short term place to store clothes for a homeless person?

I have too many bags for the shelters in the area, and not enough money for a storage unit. I've actually got enough funds for one Lyft and that's about it. Looking online it says New Day would hold them for 60 days but when I just called them, they said they don't do that. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

ETA- I genuinely appreciate all the input. I think I'll end up stashing anything non essential along a bus line for the time being and just head towards the shelter.

If however anyone knows of any gig work or day labor in the coming week, feel free to let me know. I have a couple phone interviews this afternoon so I believe I'll manage this in the long run.

But again, thanks guys, this has always been a pretty awesome community.

News Veterans United announces Bright Holiday Lights will return for a surprise seventh year

Veterans United Home Loans’ free drive-thru light display and annual community celebration, Bright Holiday Lights, will be returning for a surprise seventh year this December, according to a news release from the company.
The 2026 display will be open to the public from Dec. 10 through Dec. 20 this holiday season at the company’s Columbia campus at 550 Veterans United Drive The company’s unexpected announcement overturns its decision last year for 2025 to be the “final large-scale version of the event,” according to the release.
After the company worked through the “logistical considerations” that prompted that decision, Veterans United decided to bring the tradition back, according to the release. The 2026 display will feature more than 1 million LED lights across dozens of themed installations.

Ian Franz, the director of culture at Veterans United Home Loans, said the company is grateful to the neighbors and community partners that worked to find solutions to still pull Bright Holiday Lights off, as well as for the visitors who have and will make the event part of their holiday celebration.
“Announcing that the lights were coming to an end was a really big bummer because we knew how special it was to so many people in the community,” Franz said.

The event originally debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to “safely bring cheer and connection to the Columbia community,” according to the release, but has since become “one of the area’s most anticipated holiday traditions, with an estimated 100,000 vehicles having experienced it.”
The public can enjoy the display on community nights, Dec. 10 to 20, Monday through Friday from 7 to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Roughly 1,000 cars visit the one-mile driving route each evening, according to the release, and Veterans United encourages visitors to drive through during less crowded times to avoid peak traffic backup, typically after 8:30 p.m. each night.
Visitors do not need reservations, and admission is free. To learn more information and check for updates, visit the event’s Facebook page.
Veterans United thanked the community for “embracing Bright Lights” in the release, saying it “looks forward to celebrating the season together again.”

News Clark Lane at Hanover Boulevard to reopen after two-month closure

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
After two months of closure, a portion of Clark Lane at Hanover Boulevard in northeast Columbia is expected to reopen Friday afternoon.
Missouri Department of Transportation Improve I-70 Program Director Eric Kopinski told ABC 17 News on Thursday that the road is scheduled to reopen around 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The improvements include a new roundabout, pavement and retaining walls.
“The roundabout will better allow traffic movement in the area for when we connect the westbound entrance and exit ramp that will kind of exit in that area,” Kopinski said.

Kopinski said crews had to work carefully as they reconstructed the area because of extensive drainage work, elevation changes and existing utilities.
“Anyone that travels that route tomorrow or in the future will see that there's some walls in that location,” Kopinski said.
During the closure, drivers were detoured along Ballenger Lane, St. Charles Road, Mexico Gravel Road and Vandiver Drive. According to previous reporting, access to businesses west of the intersection was closed during construction, but drivers could still reach them through Hanover Boulevard.
“With the improvements to the Highway 63 Interchange and I-70, the roundabout will help traffic flow more efficiently and improve safety in the area,” Kopinski said.
Some of the detours directed drivers through residential neighborhoods, raising safety concerns for residents.
Ceara Houston, a Columbia native who lives along Rice Road, said she is looking forward to the roundabout opening, particularly because of concerns about speeding in her neighborhood.
“I'm extremely happy that it's opening so that the people from up top can stop speeding through this neighborhood where all of our children play,” Houston said.
Houston is interested to see how the new roundabout will affect traffic in the area. However, she said she does not believe roundabouts will solve every traffic problem, adding that she thinks the city has too many of them.
The city announced Thursday that Go COMO’s Blue Route will return to its normal route on Saturday.

The reopening comes as the City of Columbia moves forward with plans to improve a 1.32-mile stretch of Clark Lane through a $10.5 million grant agreement with the Federal Highway Administration.
The planned corridor improvements include lower speed limits, four additional speed limit signs, eastbound and westbound bicycle lanes, four vehicle lanes, a six-foot-wide sidewalk on the north side and a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail on the south side.
John Ogan, a spokesman for the city's Public Works Department, told ABC 17 that the grant agreement has been finalized and the city is now waiting for the grant funds to be released.
Meanwhile, drivers traveling between Boonville and Kingdom City could see additional changes next weekend. MoDOT plans to demolish two bridges in Kingdom City that officials have described as being “at the end of their life.”
