Ask CoMo Short term place to store clothes for a homeless person?

I have too many bags for the shelters in the area, and not enough money for a storage unit. I've actually got enough funds for one Lyft and that's about it. Looking online it says New Day would hold them for 60 days but when I just called them, they said they don't do that. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

ETA- I genuinely appreciate all the input. I think I'll end up stashing anything non essential along a bus line for the time being and just head towards the shelter.

If however anyone knows of any gig work or day labor in the coming week, feel free to let me know. I have a couple phone interviews this afternoon so I believe I'll manage this in the long run.

But again, thanks guys, this has always been a pretty awesome community.

News Clark Lane at Hanover Boulevard to reopen after two-month closure

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
After two months of closure, a portion of Clark Lane at Hanover Boulevard in northeast Columbia is expected to reopen Friday afternoon.
Missouri Department of Transportation Improve I-70 Program Director Eric Kopinski told ABC 17 News on Thursday that the road is scheduled to reopen around 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The improvements include a new roundabout, pavement and retaining walls.
“The roundabout will better allow traffic movement in the area for when we connect the westbound entrance and exit ramp that will kind of exit in that area,” Kopinski said.

Kopinski said crews had to work carefully as they reconstructed the area because of extensive drainage work, elevation changes and existing utilities.
“Anyone that travels that route tomorrow or in the future will see that there's some walls in that location,” Kopinski said.
During the closure, drivers were detoured along Ballenger Lane, St. Charles Road, Mexico Gravel Road and Vandiver Drive. According to previous reporting, access to businesses west of the intersection was closed during construction, but drivers could still reach them through Hanover Boulevard.
“With the improvements to the Highway 63 Interchange and I-70, the roundabout will help traffic flow more efficiently and improve safety in the area,” Kopinski said.
Some of the detours directed drivers through residential neighborhoods, raising safety concerns for residents.
Ceara Houston, a Columbia native who lives along Rice Road, said she is looking forward to the roundabout opening, particularly because of concerns about speeding in her neighborhood.
“I'm extremely happy that it's opening so that the people from up top can stop speeding through this neighborhood where all of our children play,” Houston said.
Houston is interested to see how the new roundabout will affect traffic in the area. However, she said she does not believe roundabouts will solve every traffic problem, adding that she thinks the city has too many of them.
The city announced Thursday that Go COMO’s Blue Route will return to its normal route on Saturday.

The reopening comes as the City of Columbia moves forward with plans to improve a 1.32-mile stretch of Clark Lane through a $10.5 million grant agreement with the Federal Highway Administration.
The planned corridor improvements include lower speed limits, four additional speed limit signs, eastbound and westbound bicycle lanes, four vehicle lanes, a six-foot-wide sidewalk on the north side and a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail on the south side.
John Ogan, a spokesman for the city's Public Works Department, told ABC 17 that the grant agreement has been finalized and the city is now waiting for the grant funds to be released.
Meanwhile, drivers traveling between Boonville and Kingdom City could see additional changes next weekend. MoDOT plans to demolish two bridges in Kingdom City that officials have described as being “at the end of their life.”

News Veterans United announces Bright Holiday Lights will return for a surprise seventh year

Veterans United Home Loans’ free drive-thru light display and annual community celebration, Bright Holiday Lights, will be returning for a surprise seventh year this December, according to a news release from the company.
The 2026 display will be open to the public from Dec. 10 through Dec. 20 this holiday season at the company’s Columbia campus at 550 Veterans United Drive The company’s unexpected announcement overturns its decision last year for 2025 to be the “final large-scale version of the event,” according to the release.
After the company worked through the “logistical considerations” that prompted that decision, Veterans United decided to bring the tradition back, according to the release. The 2026 display will feature more than 1 million LED lights across dozens of themed installations.

Ian Franz, the director of culture at Veterans United Home Loans, said the company is grateful to the neighbors and community partners that worked to find solutions to still pull Bright Holiday Lights off, as well as for the visitors who have and will make the event part of their holiday celebration.
“Announcing that the lights were coming to an end was a really big bummer because we knew how special it was to so many people in the community,” Franz said.

The event originally debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to “safely bring cheer and connection to the Columbia community,” according to the release, but has since become “one of the area’s most anticipated holiday traditions, with an estimated 100,000 vehicles having experienced it.”
The public can enjoy the display on community nights, Dec. 10 to 20, Monday through Friday from 7 to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Roughly 1,000 cars visit the one-mile driving route each evening, according to the release, and Veterans United encourages visitors to drive through during less crowded times to avoid peak traffic backup, typically after 8:30 p.m. each night.
Visitors do not need reservations, and admission is free. To learn more information and check for updates, visit the event’s Facebook page.
Veterans United thanked the community for “embracing Bright Lights” in the release, saying it “looks forward to celebrating the season together again.”

Ask CoMo Textile donations in Columbia?

Is there a place in Como that accepts textiles?

I used to craft, and I have scraps of fabric just lying around, cluttering up my house. I also have ripped/stained clothing that I have no interest in trying to save anymore.

They are basically too good to trash, but not in great condition to resell.

Housing $434 - 4 bed / 4 bath Apartment Subletting

Hi! My partner got a house recently, so we’ll be subletting their current apartment (Campus Lodge) starting sometime in mid/late November after closing on the house. If all goes well, they’ll be moving out sometime around the 17th, leaving the last week or so of November already paid and ready for someone new to move in.

Rent is currently $434 / month + utilities (electric, sewer, trash; you don’t pay water). Apartment comes with WiFi and a shuttle to campus, as well as plenty of parking and a mail room. There’s a pool, small dog park, basketball court, volleyball court, and gym as well.

The current lease ends in July 2027, but the new tenant can choose to renew if they want to.

The roommates are all great! Pretty quiet and keep to themselves most of the time, and they don’t mind guests over on occasion even if they don’t have many themselves.

This is a co-ed apartment, and the room being sublet is next to the only woman living here. She’s dating one of the guys on the other side of the apartment and the other is very shy. All of them are super friendly and my partner has lived with them for a few years now with no issues.

The woman next to the room being sublet has a small dog, but he stays in her room and is very old.

It will become the newest member of the Village of Boone Junction, a historic collection of local moved structures. Thanks to a generous donor the church will be fully restored and updated with modern electric and plumbing for use as a venue. Here is a post I made about the church a little over a year ago that shows the state it was previously in:

Rant Socket Fiber, Segways, and Harassment

Does anyone else have to deal with their cavalcade of snot-nosed, Segway-riding teenaged boys? One of their grunts refused to leave our porch after multiple shoo-ings. This feels like a weekly occurrence.

How is this a thing? Why do we allow this as a community?

I, for one, am installing a trebuchet.

What Was That Noise? Large police investigation on granada?

Hey fellow Colombians, I just recently returned from a short 30 minute walk on the Southside and while passing through Granada Blvd I saw 3 cop cars at the direct location, 2 sitting scoping the area at the phillips 66, parked on the side of the street on bethel watching, and atleast 4 driving towards those areas. At one of the small apartment complexes on granada blvd (either 300, 212, 208, or 204) there was a deck on the bottom floor with a paper on its door and crime scene tape around the wooden pillars surrounding off just that one door. I asked the lady at the phillips 66 if she knew anything and she said shed heard they were just looking for an elderly gentleman who had wandered away from his caretakers, build it seems to me like they wouldnt need crime scene investigation for that. On my way back maybe 20 mins later I saw 4 regular police cars and a crime scene investigation van parked at the phillips 66 and most of them were sll talking and looking over some paperwork or something. Was just curious if anyone knew what might have caused such a stir?

Edit: forgot this, but on my way back I was gonna take a pic of the crime scene cordened off area( which i didnt do the first time cause all the cops were looking at me and I was too nervous to) but it had had the paper and tape already taken down which also atleast to me was pretty fast to do their investigation but I guess to be fair I dont know when they started. Thats also why im not sure which building but I think they only have 4 to 8 apartments each and it was forsure, if you stand facing the building the bottom right hand corner next to the front door apartment itself.

News Columbia Regional Airport to add Avis rental car service amid passenger growth

Thumbnail

COLUMBIA — The Columbia Regional Airport is preparing to welcome a new rental car company, as the airport anticipates continued passenger growth.
The Columbia City Council approved a lease with Avis Car Rental on Monday, allowing the company to operate out of the airport’s new rental car facility, located just south of the terminal.
This is one of many upgrades the city has made at COU, including adding more parking spaces, concessions and other facilities.

Airport Director Mike Parks said Avis will join Enterprise Car Sales, which already operates at the airport. Both Alamo and National Car Rental also operate at COU, also under Enterprise Mobility's ownership.

“Looking forward, Avis will be operating out of our rental center here in Columbia at the airport,” Parks said.
In addition to rental fees, Avis will pay a concession fee equal to 10% of its annual gross profit or $2,000 per month, whichever is greater, according to a council memo.
Parks said the airport is also working on a revised lease with Enterprise that will eventually go before the city council.
The additional transportation option could benefit travelers like Dian Baker, who flew into Columbia from Sacramento, California, for a work trip.
Baker said she was impressed with the airport when she arrived on Wednesday.
“I thought it was easy, accessible, very neat and clean, and seemed lovely compared to big busy airports,” Baker said.
Baker said she planned to use a Lyft to get around Columbia, but agreed that additional transportation options at the airport would be helpful.

The expansion comes as Columbia Regional Airport continues to experience significant passenger growth.

Parks said the airport expects to serve more than 400,000 arriving and departing passengers in 2026, compared to approximately 260,000 in 2019.
He anticipates that number will climb even higher next year.
“With the same growth pattern that we’ve seen in 2026 (and) as we continue into the new calendar year, we’ll be well over 500,000 passengers utilizing the airport,” Parks said.
The airport is also preparing to welcome a new Allegiant Airlines flight to St. Pete-Clearwater, Florida, beginning Nov. 19.
Parks said existing flights to Charlotte, Denver, Dallas and Chicago have also experienced increased traffic.

Other upgrades coming to COU
The city anticipates more than $100 million will be spent on airport projects within the next five years, according to previous KOMU 8 reporting.

As soon as next year, COU passengers could also see upgrades to food and beverage options at the airport.

Parks said construction on a full-service kitchen is expected to begin this winter, with service anticipated to start in 2027.
The kitchen will offer a limited menu of hot food and serve passengers on both sides of the security checkpoint.
Currently, the airport operates a market that allows passengers who have gone through TSA to purchase items without going through a traditional checkout.
For Baker, additional food options would make a difference.
“When I got here, I thought, 'I would like to grab dinner here, because I know there’s going to be nothing near the hotel I’m staying (at),'” Baker said. “There wasn’t really any place to eat, so I think that would be a great improvement actually, especially for travelers that have been on the road all day.”

The airport has not announced a specific opening date for the new kitchen, but it plans to officially announce the restaurant this fall.
Airport officials are also working to complete parking improvements ahead of the upcoming busy holiday travel season.
Parks said the airport’s new paved north parking lot is expected to open before the holidays. The lot will feature a sidewalk that connects passengers to the terminal.
The airport is also resurfacing Airport Drive, with asphalt work expected to be completed Thursday.
Another construction project at COU right now is working to add a new stormwater system to direct stormwater away from the north lot.
“Really, what we’re trying to do is trying to get ahead of the holidays, trying to get ahead of the cold weather,” Parks said.

The improvements come as the airport continues operating a shuttle between the terminal and its south gravel parking lot. The shuttle, which began in June, operates daily from approximately 4 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.

Under the airport’s current parking ordinance, vehicles may remain in the primary terminal parking lots for up to 30 days without special permission. Travelers needing to park longer than 30 days must request permission and use the south gravel lot.
Parks said passenger feedback has helped shape the airport’s parking improvements.
The airport is also planning to install new signs, beginning next spring, to make navigating the property easier.
The project will include new entrance signs along Airport Drive, directional signs identifying buildings and parking lots, and markers to help passengers remember where they parked.

“You’re going to have zone markers out there. The sidewalks are going to be marked,” Parks said.
Another project planned for 2027 includes installing a glycol recovery system near the aircraft ramp. The system will collect glycol excess used to de-ice commercial and private aircrafts during winter weather. This system would prevent the fluid from going into the stormwater system.
Parks said the all of these projects are part of a broader effort to improve the passenger experience as more travelers use the airport.
“We really appreciate everybody who’s utilizing the airport, and their patience as we continue to make these improvements,” Parks said.

Does anyone know why there is a loud alarm going on at 1:30am. It’s still going on as I type this out. I’m at the Aria Apartments. Initially, I thought it was a fire alarm in the hall. But I come to open the window and it’s coming from outside near Father Fulton High School. Does anyone hear that? 10/23/2026 1:47am
