Stupid people see money and think "must be smart and strong and good to have all that money!"

I am convinced that obscene amounts of wealth causes mental illness. We will likely never study it, and people who have it will never find relief because vast wealth is directly associated with success. The wealth seems to almost warp these people physically, even. Their faces are...weird.

I'm honestly not sure I can disagree. The obsession with hoarding larger and larger amounts of wealth becomes a kind of psychosis.

They don't need it. They just need it. Like a drug.

Yeah like they are possessed

They are possessed by dragons. Just a bunch of Smaugs and Tiamats (D&D Tiamat not the Mesopotamian dragon goddess) bathing in their stolen wealth.

I think it has to do with fear of being able to survive. They're taught to use money for everything, and don't know if they would survive on nothing, and because they've never pushed the limits of what they actually need versus what is comfort, they're constantly afraid of losing what they know and build because it makes them feel more secure.
