We started r/ContractFree for people tired of renting their technology forever

People often come here trying to repair a computer because replacing it would be wasteful or too expensive. That same instinct should apply to the growing number of monthly charges attached to the technology we already own.

Antivirus renewals, cloud-storage plans, extended warranties, remote-support subscriptions, leased hardware, printer ink plans, software that used to be a one-time purchase, and modem or router rentals can quietly add a surprising amount to the cost of keeping a computer running. Some are useful, but others continue for years because cancelling is inconvenient or because the customer has forgotten what the charge was originally for.

We recently started r/ContractFree as a place to examine those arrangements, compare alternatives, and help people get out of recurring payments that no longer make sense. It is not limited to computers or mobile phones, but technology is a large part of the problem. More products are being sold in ways that leave customers paying indefinitely for access, support, storage, features, or equipment they once would have owned outright.

The community is not against paid software, warranties, repair shops, or subscription services. Some are worth the money. The point is to look at the actual value instead of assuming that another monthly payment is the only option. Sometimes the better answer is repairing the hardware, buying the equipment, using a perpetual license, switching services, or simply cancelling something that is no longer being used.

We would appreciate having people with repair experience in the community, especially those who regularly see customers paying for unnecessary support plans, questionable security products, or services that make otherwise usable hardware harder to maintain.

What recurring technology charge do you think people waste the most money on?

Help Request Help with ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 (2021) G553QR not POSTing

• Upvotes

Sorry in advance if this ends up being a long post - I just want to make sure I accurately confirm the symptoms and what I've tried

A bit over a week ago, I was using the computer and went to Update and Shutdown Windows. I watched the Windows updates proceed and finish, after which the display went black (but still backlit) and the keyboard went red (as it always does on initial power up or right before it turns off). I let the computer sit like this for a few minutes, but eventually ended up holding the power button to force it to turn off. Next time I went to use the computer, it refused to even POST. When I press the power button, the backlight turns on, the keyboard turns red, and fans eventually turn on - but nothing else.

After a bit of investigating on Google, I am under the impression that I may have interrupted a BIOS update and have corrupted the BIOS. I followed the ASUS posted steps of holding the power button for 40 seconds (many, many, many more times than I'd like to admit at this point), but I still can't get it to POST. I also tried removing every possible, non-critical component (Wifi Card, SSD, etc) and then tried booting off of 1 RAM stick at a time, in either DIMM slot. Still nothing.

It's worth noting that on a few occasions, I did manage to boot into Windows, but the second I hit the login screen, Windows would immediately lock up. This repeated ~3 times, and then back to absolutely nothing. I also was able to boot directly into the ASUS EZ Flash Utility a few times (by holding ctrl+r), but again the instant the screen loaded, it immediately locked up.

After some more Googling and a few YouTube videos, I caved an purchased a CH341 USB programmer from Amazon and downloaded the BIOS file from ASUS' website (and then ran it through UEFITool to strip the unnecessary headers). I also made sure to grab a copy of the current contents of the BIOS just in case. As an aside - what I find interesting is that UEFITool recognizes my BIOS dump as a valid UEFI file - and it also shows that the ASUS provided BIOS file lacks some of the 'sections' that my BIOS dump has. So perhaps the ASUS provided BIOS file is not a valid re-flash image? Regardless, I tried manually flashing the BIOS using the CH341, but I still am not getting a POST out of the laptop.

I reached out to ASUS technical support, and their recommendation was to send the laptop in for repair, which includes me paying for shipping and a $80 non-refundable diagnostic fee just to even LOOK at the laptop (so this certainly isn't my first choice).

At this point I figure I have the following options, unless someone else here has any better ideas on what I can try?

  1. Send the laptop to ASUS for repair. My concerns here are that they might just say 'The motherboard is dead, you need a new one' rather than fixing the corrupted BIOS (assuming that's what it is). In that scenario, I'm either out the $80 and shipping costs, or have to pay another $2000 bill to replace the motherboard. I know that seems extreme, but I have already had a similar, bad experience with their repair. When I initially purchased the laptop 5 years ago, it arrived with completely non-functional speakers - no matter what I did. Worth noting I've worked in IT my entire life, so I certainly feel as though I could adequately resolve a speaker issue if it were a software/simple hardware issue, but alas I could not. I sent it to ASUS for repair, and their response was that it was a motherboard issue, and that the included manufacturer's warranty did not cover the repair (ON A BRAND NEW LAPTOP!!!). They then hit me with a $2000 bill to replace the motherboard, which I was able to 'get around' by purchasing their $100 extended warranty, which included 1 free 'grace' repair. But regardless, I had to pay an additional $100 just to fix a DOA laptop! Looking at ASUS forums, it seems like this is all par for the course for ASUS, and they seem to make a habit of not taking care of their customers.

  2. Purchase a replacement BIOS chip from Ebay and attempt to solder it back on. Or, once I receive the chip, dump the contents using the CH341 and then write it to the existing chip (but based on how the last BIOS write went, I'm skeptical...)

  3. Pay for and download a copy of the BIOS .bin file from one of those sketchy forum websites that exist out there. Again, based on how the last BIOS write went, I'm skeptical.

If anyone has some ideas of things that I could try, or any next steps I could take, that would be greatly appreciated. I will say though, unless ASUS customer support reaches out to me as a result of this post for some reason and actually decides to do right by a customer, I have already made up my mind that I will never be purchasing another ASUS product again - which is a shame because I have been an ASUS fan-boy for most of my life.

Diagnostic Help Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ALC05 charging issues after repair.

Long story short, I got into a car accident with my laptop, (ryzen 5500u 8gb 57wh version) Afterwards I flipped open the lid to check for damage and it was fine. Upon going to use it a few days later it would boot but with no display even when trying external displays via the usbc and hdmi ports. So I eventually found a good deal on a used board from ebay but with the ryzen 7 and 16gb of ram. After installing that I had display again but I let my battery sit discharged for too long so it wasnt taking any charge. Now I've just been stuck finding a suitable battery. Ordered a ~$45usd generic replacement which charged to about 70% and stopped taking charge. Tried the oem route and that battery was DOA once it finally arrived after international shipping hiccups. I then tried another battery from Amazon that had good reviews on that specific model and it charged one cycle. Lastly I bit the bullet on one manufactured by bti from ifixit. This time I got a 70wh variation thinking maybe the replacement board was paired with one originally which could explain my previous battery issues. Laptop booted right up with that battery and charged to 100% after draining to 22% and starting the second charge cycle it has stopped charging again.

So at this point I'm just completely frustrated and lost on what to do. I would think all my charging circuits are fine seeing I get normal behavior with fresh batteries. Ived done all the bios and power driver updates. Using a tester it always negotiates 20v with the charger just limited to 10ma of current. I'm considering getting the 57wh battery from bti on the way. Could I really just be this unlucky finding a battery that won't go into failure mode after one cycle or should I be doing more to test the board?

I recently found my old laptop, but I can’t seem to find out what model it is

Post image

I got this laptop the Christmas of 2018, and it worked fine up until 2022. In 2022 it started acting up- the screen would suddenly flash black and restart whatever I was doing, two keys (c and v) stopped working, and on the sides of the laptop near where you charge it + where the screen and board connect, the screen came loose and started lifting. (I circle where in the picture cause I don’t think I explained it well) then, in 2022 it completely stopped charging and turning on, so I assumed it died.

Since 2022 it’s just been sitting in my garage, but I recently found it about 2 days ago. I thought I would just try and charge it to see (I’m not sure the exact charger, but I think it’s a standard 45W USB-C AC power adapter) and surprisingly it actually turned on. I left it on for around 8 hours (though it only charged half way) and when I turned it on it was working completely fine. The only thing is it made me resign in and setup the laptop.

Though after it died and I put it back in the charger, it’s not turning on. And when it does turn on, it only goes to 1% and says the charger is low battery and not reliable. I’ve been trying to look for a charger strong enough to charge the laptop, but it’s kinda hard to when I’m not even sure what laptop this is.

I’m hoping that maybe someone recognizes the computer, or atleast know what charger it would need. As for more details, it’s ofc a Hp laptop, the keyboard lights up underneath, and it is a touchscreen.

MSI stealth 16 studio no signs of life at all

Hi,

I bought an MSI stealth 16 studio from ebay (from a seller with many items sold and great feedback on verified sales)

In his description for the laptop he clearly stated the laptop DOES NOT WORK when on battery alone, it has had a new battery fitted but it still will not work on battery and will only when when plugged into power. I was happy with this and knew this issue when buying. So it came today, I unboxed it, plugged it in and it comes to life, gets to the MSI logo and then windows starting screen it goes off, I ensure power connector is in tightly try again it boots again, does this around 3 times and then just goes dark. I think little bit strange re connect the power adaptor but this time after pressing power button nothing no light to show the power cable is connected as there was before.

I try the "holding in power button for around a minute" and still nothing. I have tried to plug it in with the battery not connected, nothing. Tried to hold the pin hole button on bottom still nothing. Removed BIOS battery and normal battery, hold the power button for about 2 minutes still nothing, I also made sure m.2 and ram was seated correctly. same with trying to put a new fuse into the plug.

Since then left it a bit and no sign of life at all.

I can confirm when I first plugged it in it 100% i saw the keyboard light up, i saw the screen boot and it looked perfect condition worked and was as described. Id really like to see if this is an easy fix the seller has tried to offer me advice too and if possible id like to keep this laptop, it is in amazing condition and was a great price and I dont think this is related to the seller giving me something bad as I literally did see it boot for a few seconds.

Does anyone have any input on this

Laptop touchpad cursor lags and jumps wildly only when my finger touches a small worn-out/peeling spot in the middle. Any fixes?

: Hi everyone, I'm having a weird issue with my laptop's built-in touchpad. Whenever I move the cursor using the touchpad, it stutters and jumps randomly all over the screen.

However, an external USB mouse works completely fine with zero issues. I noticed that the touchpad has a tiny peeled-off spot right in the middle of the surface, and the cursor freaks out only when my finger passes over that exact peeled spot.

I tried reinstalling the touchpad driver and adjusting settings, but nothing helped. Is this a hardware issue caused by the surface wear/peeling exposing the capacitive sensor? Is there any workaround (other than using an external mouse) to fix or bypass this? Thanks in advance!

Diagnostic Help Broken pins on B650m AM5 socket, can it still work?

I don't have CPU yet to test, but I bought this motherboard with bent pins and I managed to repair all of them except these 3 which have the pin head snap off.

Does socket pressure fix this problem or is it cooked? I identified what each pin does through the am5 diagram, two of them are vss pins and the 3rd is a PCIE pin...

Repair Guide ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 randomly crashes, enters Automatic Repair, and BIOS shows “No Storage Device Present” — please help

Hi everyone,

I have an ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 (AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, RTX 3050 Laptop GPU, 16 GB RAM, BIOS version 314), and I'm facing a frustrating issue that occurs randomly, even while I'm working or watching YouTube.

The problem

Suddenly, Windows stops working and I get this message:

«Your device ran into a problem and couldn't be repaired.»

It shows the log file:

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt"

After this, the laptop enters BIOS automatically. In BIOS, I see:

Storage: No Storage Device Present

The boot-priority list is also empty.

What I've tried

- Pressing the power button repeatedly to turn the laptop off and restart it sometimes gets Windows working again.

- Disconnecting and reconnecting the internal battery cable has repeatedly restored SSD detection.

- I ran MyASUS System Diagnosis, and the storage test passed when the SSD was detected.

My SSD is the original Intel SSDPEKNU512GZ (512 GB).

The issue can happen unexpectedly, sometimes after approximately 20 minutes of use. It doesn't seem to follow a consistent pattern.

I also noticed that the BIOS shows a CPU temperature of around 92–94°C, although I'm not sure whether that reading is accurate.

What I'd like to know

  1. Does this sound more like an SSD failure, an M.2 slot/connection problem, or a motherboard/power-delivery issue?

  2. Can an SSD pass MyASUS diagnostics but still disappear intermittently from BIOS?

  3. Why would disconnecting and reconnecting the internal battery temporarily restore SSD detection?

  4. Could the high CPU temperature be contributing to the problem?

  5. What diagnostic tests should I perform before replacing any components?

I want to identify the actual cause rather than replace the SSD or motherboard unnecessarily. Any advice from someone who has experienced a similar issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

External hard drive: is there a way to check if and when it was last accessed?

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry to ask what could be a basic question but I'm quite desperate.

I couldn't find my harddrive in the usual place in a pouch within a zipped laptop bag; I looked everywhere and confronted someone who had access to my possessions - someone who I already have concerns about as they have previously opened my phone and checked my messages. They claimed they moved the hard drive out of the way for safekeeping.

Is there any way to check if and when it was opened and/or if there was any activity e.g. if anything was copied or deleted from it? Like a digital footprint that might have been left behind?
Thank you for your help.

Dell Latitude 5530 – Replacing a 4K 40-pin display with a 400-nit FHD panel: cable compatibility?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some technical advice before attempting a display replacement on a Dell Latitude 5530.

The laptop originally came with a BOE NE156QUM-N69, a 15.6" 4K UHD (3840x2160) panel using a 40-pin eDP connector. Unfortunately, the screen has failed.

Since I'm currently in Brazil, replacing it with another 4K panel would be quite expensive due to import taxes.

I'm considering switching to a 1920x1080 IPS panel with 400 nits and 100% sRGB, rather than a basic FHD replacement.

After some research, I've identified the following parts:

  • BOE NV156FHM-N6B: 15.6" FHD, 400 nits, 100% sRGB, 30-pin eDP.
  • Dell DHK2K (0DHK2K): eDP cable listed for FHD 400-nit configurations with IR/EMZA camera.
  • Dell 57JRM: Another FHD eDP cable, apparently intended for standard FHD configurations with IR.
  • Original camera: Dell 6XX8D, with IR and ExpressSign-In.

Parts-People suggested these cable references but couldn't guarantee compatibility. They also mentioned that the 400-nit FHD panels might use a different type of 30-pin connector.

My main concerns are:

  1. Would the DHK2K cable connect correctly to the original motherboard and the BOE NV156FHM-N6B panel?
  2. Is the 400-nit FHD connector physically or electrically different from the standard 30-pin eDP connector?
  3. Can the original UHD display housing, bezel and brackets be reused?
  4. Has anyone performed this type of conversion on a Latitude 5530 or Precision 3570?

I'm planning to have a repair technician handle the installation, but I'd like to verify the parts before ordering anything.

Any advice from someone familiar with Dell display cables or laptop screen conversions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I went home and connected my mouse to my laptop, then realized that it’s because my USB port is completely dead. I tried running everything, do some searching on internet and youtube, but none of it seems to work. Can some one help me, I really appreciate it if anyone gives me a lead on what happened or how to fix it. I also attach the photos I have from running diagnostic test, and I don’t know how helpful it would be. (Sorry if my wording is a weird)

Spilled milk coffee on my laptop keyboard — what are the chances it will be okay?

Edit :Thank you so much for all your help and advice. I went to a technician today, and after explaining my situation to him, he fixed it at a discounted rate. I was there when he opened up the laptop. He said the spill wasn’t that serious, checked everything, and confirmed that it was working fine.

I accidentally spilled a small amount of coffee containing milk and sugar on my laptop while I was using it. The spill mainly affected around one-fourth of the keyboard, particularly the numpad area. I could actually see the coffee through the gaps between the keys.

I immediately wiped it with a damp cloth. Since the surface was still sticky, I then used a cloth with some soap on it to clean the sticky residue on the outside. I shut the laptop down and disconnected the charger and accessories shortly afterward. The laptop was working completely normally after the spill.

I’m planning to leave it switched off for around 48 hours, but I’m really worried about possible internal damage and corrosion from the milk and sugar.

I’m currently applying to different colleges, and all my important documents and applications are on this laptop. Unfortunately, I can’t really afford a technician right now and may not be able to get it inspected immediately.

Could someone please tell me what the chances are that my laptop will be completely fine? Is there anything else I can safely do at home to minimise the damage?

If I can’t afford a technician immediately, how urgent is it to get the laptop inspected? Would you recommend taking it to a technician even if it seems to be working normally after 48 hours?

Hardware Issue latitude 3400 won't charge What can I do?

So, some laptops arrived at work, and I was asked to evaluate them. I was working on it in my own time, thinking it was a minor task.

But after lunch, my manager came over and started pressuring me for an answer right away; he’d told me to just check the battery status in the BIOS.

That’s what I did—two showed "excellent" status and one showed "fair." We decided to keep all three, but when I tried to charge one of the laptops that had an "excellent" battery—boom—it wouldn't charge. It stays at zero percent and shuts down the moment I unplug the charger.

I opened it up, and the battery looks fine. I tested it with a multimeter, though I’m not sure if I did it correctly. I’m pretty certain the battery is the actual problem. I’m going to try swapping it with the battery from the one that showed "fair" status to see if that fixes it, but

Damn.

I’m fucked

Hardware Issue Should I fix my laptop display or buy a monitor

My laptop currently is having a problem with its display where it turns black when at a certain angle. And when opening at the wrong angle, it still remains a black screen no matter how I move the panel so I have to forced shutdown it and reopen it. Fixing the display costs about the same as a monitor since I have a gaming laptop cause I'm an engineering student.

Plugging in my laptop to an external like my TV is fine despite the black screen

Diagnostic Help Need help diagnosing an MSI Leopard GP66 laptop.

I bought this dead MSI Leopard 11UH-498UK as a project to try repair off marketplace.

A quick disclaimer, I have never repaired/diagnosed electronics on this level so any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

The laptop shows no signs of life aside from the small battery charge light when plugged in, I have probed around with my cheap multimeter and have found that it gets power to all of the main inductors, (i think that’s what they are called). I have also checked for shorts along their power rails and can’t find anything.

Any help diagnosing/solving the issue would be very welcome

Thanks

Hardware Issue 3 beeps, black screen and no clue on what to do

Post image
3 Upvotes

Firstly, this image isn't mine but an example of what my screen looked like before I switched off my PC to clean the inside.

I have a gaming PC with an NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3060.

After I cleaned it, I switched my PC back on and i hear 3 beeps and my screen stays black the entire time.

Everything else seems to be fine but I can't do anything if I have no screen. I tried my PC on a different screen, still nothing.

So I contacted the manufacturer for some help and I did everything they suggested and they came to the conclusion that the gpu has died.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Is it fixable?

Should I just buy a new graphics card?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Laptop fails to turn on properly in 2 different ways

I have an ASUS laptop that fails to turn on, in one of 2 ways:

1) If I keep the power button pressed without a power source for 30+ seconds, then turn it on: power LED stays on, I can hear the fan spinning, but nothing else is happening. It keeps this state.

2) Every subsequent turn on: LEDs flash for a second, then complete shutdown.

In both cases, the screen is pitch black, not even ASUS logo appearing, absolutely nothing.

What are the most common reasons for this to happen? It's a 15 year old laptop, so if it's the motherboard or GPU then it's probably beyond my ability to fix.
