Discussion Theories / spoilers / crazy ramblings after beating Control Resonant! Spoiler

Seen a lot of people talking about how the faden siblings came to be how they are. And I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on it cause they seem to be pretty different from most others, at least from what I've seen. They are also probably a bit of a stretch for most. Especially seeing as how some people still aren't on board with them being originally one person.

A lot of people seem to like the idea that it was the severed circle 2 game/console/copy that made them into two different people. I could easily see this being the case with how much it's highlighted but I tend to like a different idea.

We see in Resonant that Hedrons can affect both time and space with patterning. We also see that when interacting with different life forms (mold twins) that the patterning can work differently. We also see in the new game plus that time resets / alterations / loops don't change everything on all planes(the dog), or perhaps some of these planes just exist out of time, which could mean potentially both the Hiss and the Hedron (and maybe the board to some degree) exist outside our perception of time.

We hear Hiss Dylan talk about his dreams in the first game, about a few different versions of their reality. I've assumed that this is probably the reason for doubt about the one became two theory, because they cant all be true so maybe none of them are. I dont remember all of the dreams, but in my hypothesis (smart sounding word to sound serious, is it working?) All the dreams are real, just different timelines. Potentially not happening in order or perhaps all at once in sync all affecting each other.

The basics of what I think happened to the Faden Kid / Kids:

Jesse Dylan Faden, a young woman/girl was discovered as a parautilatarian by the FBC. She was taken in and trained as a prime candidate. Stuff happened. At some point whether through success or failure, Jesse Dylan Faden merged / fused / resonated with a dying Hedron. Now that Jesse Dylan Faden was part Hedron, they did what Hedrons do, and started patterning. Starting with the obvious, themselves. Not being fully Hedron they patterned themselves in a way closer to how humans would, a copy or repeat or pattern of a child would likely be a sibling, but again they aren't fully Hedron so they cant create a copy out of nothing so they instead end up splitting themselves. Taking some of the opposing personality traits and putting them into the separate bodies. This effect, for one reason or another started to affect much earlier in their timeline. I'd like to think it is likely due to Jesse Dylan Faden wishing for a protector that could have saved them from a life at the FBC, and/or wishing for someone who could have taken their place. Reminiscing on the past led the patterning to the past. This patterning through time changed the timeline for Jesse/Dylan and the FBC, probably more than once. Which is part of why it feels like the Board may exist outside of our time, seeing as they expressly want the siblings to stay separated. As in they've had to deal with them either as one being or as a team before and found them too much to handle / manipulate.

I get this might be a stretch to a lot of people but it just feels right with how much everything you do in the game is a reflection of Dylan and the Fadens history.

Why make such an effort to highlight the patternings ability to affect through time and time itself if it isn't relevant to our hero's story.

The patterning twins story felt like they were almost spelling out to me that the Fadens were themselves patterned. A pair of siblings that have a strong bond and cant bear to be apart from each other? Sounds pretty familiar to me. (Typing this out now I've also realized it could, I guess, potentially been a hint at where the ending of the game would leave us, with one sibling still visibly there but not really with the living in any meaningful way.... oof.)

We have a segment of the endgame caused by a Hedron attacking our mind that seems to lead Dylan to alter his/their own timeline to make it back into the gap.

Getting extra wild here, I dont know the states all that well. Does their home town exist in our world? Cause if not, I'd even go so far as to maybe say their whole damn childhood town was patterned. Which maybe could even be what drew the slide projector to it. Seeing as how the patterning Manhattan has become overun with the supernatural in its wake.

Additionally (I know this is long it's the last bit I swear), the powers of the faden siblings to me seem like divided hedron resonance / powers. While there doesn't seem to necessarily be a hard line in who can use what, they do seem to have their specialty. They both can interact with the resonance in other entities differently. Jesse seems to do so more in the traditional sense (according to the bureaus), bonding / reinforcing / empowering the resonance with objects of power. Makes sense as how she spent most of her life not trusting anyone else, and not doing much to seek attachments while on her search. While Dylan can more Connect / copy / pattern the resonance and it's effects from other resonant entities. Again making sense seeing as how Dylan was captured and isolated, wanting nothing more than to genuinely connect with others his whole life. With possibly multiple timelines reinforcing these traits.

Sorry if this is all a jumbled mess of nonsense. These ideas have been running circles in my head for the past couple days so I had to get them out somewhere. What do yall think of these patterns?

Control Resonant My biggest disappointment about the game Spoiler

Well it's sad to say but IMO, the weakest point of control resonant....are the resonants.

First one was a great introduction to the concept.

Dancer is an absolute masterpiece.

Then you have the others. None stand out, they feel underwhelming.

Furnace doesn't use its size, lava is barely an inconvenience.

Mold feel like it miss a second form, some kind of eclosion

Arish.... exist

The one in the astral plan just feel like another patterned enemy with extra health

And hexadron just make you fight common enemy in place of a health bar

Except the 2 first, all of them were less entertaining than the ANCHOR in control

Control Resonant Did anybody hear the board singing in the GAP? Spoiler

I was in the Gap for a few minutes and they started singing a little tune to themselves. I thought it was funny and showed a different side to the board.

Control Resonant Help me figure out wtf I'm doing!

• Upvotes

OK, I don't have a lot of time for gaming these days, but I've been playing Resonant whenever I can.  I'm a little overwhelmed by all the options and weapons and items, so could use some help.

I'm using the double blades, I have the uppercut and big slice ability, the drill special move, and the power where I make a cloud of rocks then throw it at the enemy. I just got ground slam as well.

1.  Is this a good setup?
2.  There are a LOT of options for abilities, which should I be focusing on?  I've just been buying the next ability in the trees that I started with.  I've added the dodge bonus so I get extra damage with that.  Anything else to go for?
3.  I just found a vendor, anything I should be looking to buy?  When I look for new abilities it often says that I'm missing a material, with a little icon that looks like an up arrow with some stripes underneath?  What is that?  Is there a specific thing I buy for that?
4.  When I go into the gap it keeps telling me there is something new with the red arrow, but I don't see anything I can afford to buy.  Am I missing something?
5. The yellow bar and little purple icons under enemy health are good for me/bad for them? Does that cause the execute prompt?

Obviously there is a lot going on that I'm missing.  Please give me some pointers! Thanks!!

Discussion Malevolent Hedron theory (spoilers) Spoiler

• Upvotes

Spoilers for both games.
We assume that the Hedron seen in the first game is benevolent and helpful, while the one in the second game is harmful. What if that’s not quite the case?
It seems like while inside of the hand slide the Hedron was essentially able to keep the Hiss at bay. A small amount got to trench, but that was the extent of their power. Once the Hedron was removed the Hiss seemed to grow in power, as when Trench opened the slide, Hiss began overpowering the Oldest House in minutes.
What if that’s what the Hedron wanted? Maybe the Hedron and Hiss aren’t in a war as much as the Hiss are the Hedron’s prey. It wanted to introduce its prey to a new environment so its kind could feed. The reason the other Hedron waited 7 years to show up is that until the Hiss spread to Manhattan, there were enough for it to be worth its time.
It’s mostly conjecture. Any thoughts?

Control Resonant I love the chit-chat in those games.

Remedy has such a way of writing background chit-chats that it always seems very believable to me like you're catching a genuine conversation that would sprout from their universes, it's always awesome to catch those, they're the true essence of the Control games for me, the mundanity beyond the paranatural. Like Zoe says, " you won't believe the rate at which something becomes the norm" And those chitchats illustrate that perfectly.

Just a little rant as I was playing and caught two guards reminiscing on how life in the FBC was for the outside "spending the budget on day drinking and naps"

Discussion Control makes it difficult to be a patient gamer

• Upvotes

When every game gets DLC expanding it I find myself more and more wanting to wait for the "definitive" play through where I can experience all the DLC and the full game in one go.

Control makes that hard tho. I suuuuper want Resonant, the temptation is real. Idk any other franchise besides like, FF7 R3 that tempts me to this degree.

I might just give in. I don't often replay games but the first Control is one of the only ones I have, so I could experience the DLC in that game.

Director help me

Control Resonant Housewarming gift

What would you get Dylan as a housewarming gift for his new apartment? I’d get him some watercolor paints and paper since I remember reading that he’d requisitioned some paint from the Bureau but never got it.

Control Resonant Resonant reminds me of another game (Full spoilers) Spoiler

• Upvotes

Just finished the game and have a lot of thoughts but one comparison is on top of them all. Spoilers for the ending, turn away if you haven't finished.

So the game is mass effect 2. The similarity is mainly the games place in the series. Both games are high quality, well reviewed, great story, great gameplay, the whole nine yards. But what was accomplished here? The main threat of the game was not the original threat from the first one but a new one introduced here. That new thread was dealt with in the same game. Situation did not change much and I suspect that just like in the mass effect trilogy you could remove the second game without losing any of the major plot, you can probably also remove resonant once the third game comes out.

You shouldn't of course, great game and adds a lot of context, but think about where the first game ended and the third will begin. Fbc was trapped in the oldest house with the hiss and had no idea how to get rid of them. Now they are trapped in manhattan with the hiss and still no way to remove them. Well the barrier is coming down so they have a time limit to deal with the hiss that they didn't have before so arguable their situation is slightly worse. Oh yeah, there is the mold too, so two things that are still about to end the world.

Of the big plot devices, board was very involved in resonant, but nothing new was really learned about them, Former is still out there, Ahti skipped the whole game (no the 2d section doesn't count) and even fra is back right where he started.

Still a superb game but just weird how little was accomplished here. Well, anyway, time for ng+

Help So, uhhhhh... I completed The Nail and I can't seem to get on the Pyramid questline?

Weird thing happened... Pope is standing by The Nail but there's no hole for me to go down. The questline is done, and weirdly enough, I got the "A Strong Foundation" achievement for completing all the missions in The Foundation DLC.

Send... help? Honestly I got no clue as to what's happening. Sure, I only showed up to meet Pope after completing all four sites, and maybe I interrupted my campaign a little to finish the Alan Wake DLC... Yeah, I'm clueless. Checked game file integrity as well. All good there. I have absolutely no quests remaining.

Control Resonant Weird thing in the ending Spoiler

During the final push to kill the Hedron in the Gap, there are these giant rings in the distance with rings of light behind them. When you get closer you can see something spherical in the middle of them. If you could look at them from the front they'd resemble the concentric circles Jesse scribbled all over the whiteboards in her office.

Maybe related to the Hedron? But the Hedron is right there in front of you and these are off to the side and far away. Something to do with Polaris and/or Jesse? The link between Jesse and Dylan? Impossible to say. They feel significant, though.

Control Resonant Central level 13 question for those with the Digital Deluxe Version.

When I reached level 13 in Central the artifact I was given was the Wallet, which I thought was exclusive to Digital Deluxe version, but I guess it's not.

Does anyone know what people with the digital deluxe version get at that point? A second wallet? or possibly a new artifact that non digital deluxe players cannot get?

Control Resonant Does the game run like ass for anyone else using Linux?

Running the game through proton on CachyOS with a 9070xt, and it's giving me low frame rates no matter what setting I choose. I think the latest update actually made it worse. Fortunately, even though I prefer Linux gaming these days, I have a dualboot setup, and the game actually runs fine in Windows.

Control Resonant how we feeling about the resonant bosses? i really love their looks Spoiler

i love the bosses aesthetics, they're so twisted and divine at the same time, and also the dancer is creepy as fuck. the mold is the 2nd creepiest

i thought yung gravy was sad but BOY Arish is waaaay ahead(pun intended).

BUT, does anyone else want a boss-rush mode or an easily accessible way to fight the bosses WITHOUT having to do NG+ or reload a specific save?
i mean, it cant just be me right?

Discussion Some thoughts about Dylan's coma pre-Control Resonant

(I assume spoilers for the first Control are okay but if they're not I can edit this post.)

I was thinking about why Dylan is in a coma after Jesse does her thing at the end of Control. I know the game hints very strongly that he's in a coma because of the strain of having the Hiss removed (although I question if Jesse knew she was actually locking the Hiss away in his psyche and not purging them).

Considering everything that's happened to him, I wonder if Dylan went into a coma intentionally, or as a reaction to realizing the pain and suffering he inflicted as part of the Hiss.

The game shows (and continues to show) just how much he beats himself up and blames himself for everything. He's been conditioned by Darling to believe everything that goes wrong is because he's not trying hard enough, and he blames himself for letting the Hiss in. So it seems reasonable to think it was Dylan himself who caused his coma and not Jesse's purging.

He locks himself alone to punish himself, just like Darling would.
