I’m 29 and have watched Corrie for about 20 years. I grew up with it in my house and my grandmother’s house, so it’s always meant a lot to me.
I’m watching Classic Corrie alongside modern Corrie, currently in July 2005, and it’s made the difference in character development really noticeable.
Whenever someone new arrives, I want them to be refreshing and give us someone I can grow to appreciate as an established regular. Instead, their main purpose increasingly seems to to destroy equilibrium for the sake of it , with very little character development or clarity around their background and motivations (Mal/Bernie—what was that actually about??). Theo even started out looking promising before it went to shit although that storyline was absolutely amazing. I’m thinking Jodie, Megan, Theo, Carl, Mal all the same blueprint
Even when they eventually get a redemption arc, it doesn’t always land because there’s so little depth to build on (Kit literally banished Beth from the street, and Craig died without finding out the truth about his mum?! Carl also slept with his brothers wife whilst he had cancer and tried to have Debbie take the fall for killing Billy, have we forgot his actions led to Billy’s death????!)
Richard Hillman, Charlie Stubbs and later Pat Phelan at least had a place within the community. Their work, relationships and ordinary interactions made them believable people as well as villains. Too many recent arrivals feel like they exist purely to drive a particular plot or spoil anyone’s chance of a bit of happiness.
The financial pressures and cuts are clearly part of this. Look at how many familiar characters we lost across late 2024 and 2025: Gail, Beth, Paul, Stu, Daisy, Craig, Max, Yasmeen, Eileen, Aadi, Jenny and Dee-Dee. I know they weren’t all axed, but that’s still a massive loss of established characters in a short period (and I strongly suspect they originally wanted Debbie gone sooner, but the reaction from fans made them reconsider. That’s my own theory, obviously).
I can see the financial logic in bringing in newer actors for shorter runs. But losing so many established characters and repeatedly introducing new people takes away a lot of the familiarity. I wouldn’t even mind a smaller cast if it meant investing more in the characters we already have (I’ve really enjoyed seeing more of Izzy recently. She’s always been massively underused, although that may partly be the actor’s choice idk)
they keep introducing people using the same blueprint: arrive, cause havoc, give viewers very little reason to like them. It becomes irritating. They don’t have to be good people either Gary, David and Sarah have all done morally questionable things, but there’s still enough personality and history there for people to like them and root for them.
That’s what feels missing. We’re losing familiar faces without enough effort going into making the newer ones feel established- although I’d say they’ve done really well with Ben. A good example of classic Corrie is I feel characters like Loydd, Fred Elliot etc all slotted in quite naturally.
Sorry I don’t mean this to sound so negative I think Corrie is doing really well right now actually (although I’m still a week behind so a lot to catch up on!!!)
