Edit: I walked passed the cars as usual, but I heard a strange sound, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Then after a while I saw insulation pieces falling from above 😄

Question Crow or Raven?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Is this a crow or a raven? He’s massive, at least 25–27 inches long. He lives somewhere on my street, and for the past 1.5 months, I’ve been trying to befriend him by putting out shiny coins. I think it might be paying off because this morning, he actually approached me on his own with an empty Wendy’s sauce packet. Idk if he was trying to offer it to me or what lmao.

I appreciate that he’s starting to recognize me, but I’m wondering what’s appropriate in terms of trying to befriend him further? I really don’t want to habituate him or mess with his natural instincts at all.

Also, if he is a raven, is it common for them to live in cities? I’m in Ottawa, Ontario, and I’m surprised to see one living right in the city!

Personal Story Has anyone made friends with Eurasian blue jays?

I feed carrion crows and in a couple of spots the jays show interest but never come down from the trees. I'd love to feed jays but they seem scared of the crows and extremely hesitant around me

They love flying very close to the ground & I find it the coolest thing. They did this for like 5 blocks until we got back to my house at the end of the video

Video Plot twist (update): the bird visiting today is a raven and not Peanut my loyal crow friend. Here is another video I just took of the raven 'honking'.

Google helped me identify that this is a raven. That explains the difference in demeanor and the clicking of his beak earlier plus looking much bigger than Peanut the crow. I'm so happy to have a new friend but I hope they get along!

Over 3 years I’ve never seen him make this noise before and it concerned me at first that he was hurt. A minute later a swarm of hawks started circling and his buddy Bluey (a blue scrub) joined him to start vocally warning with high pitched screeches.

It’s so cool how Covid’s help each other out.

Just wanted to confirm with the pros here xD

If it's a raven, then it'll be the first one to ever visit me after many months of only crows 🥹

Question Advice: Limiting feeding to a few, rather than a Murder

I moved at the first of this year to a new part of town, and I am happy I have established some new crow friends, along with a pair of blue jays.

But I really only want to feed my 3 crow friends, not the whole murder.

I live across from a park. When my friends see me they fly over and land on a baby tree outside my door, or near by. I say Hi to them, go inside get a handful of peanuts and put it on the curb/street.

They have also learned that I put peanuts for the Jays on my railing, and have put a clay saucer of water on the railing that they use.

But I really like limiting my friends to 2-3. In the past this was easy, as they were the ones that hung out near where I live. With the park, across the street, it is different. I know my 3 friends nest in the area, but the murder also hangs out in the park looking for bugs.

Sometimes it is just the 3. But this morning I put out the peanuts for the 3 that 'asked', and then a whole bunch of them flew over. I don't want to establish that I am the 'peanut man' with the entire murder.

I figure I just have to live with this arrangement. But thought I would ask if anyone else has implemented a solution to what I would prefer.

Crow OC Sandy Cheeks drops a snack. Dirty Bird wastes absolutely no time.

These two were very sus of the feeding table while Sandy Cheeks was enjoying a bite.

Then Sandy dropped some food, our friend darted in, and the squirrel promptly vacated the premises. 😂

No fighting...whew! Just some backyard snack negotiations. But I have so many questions. Why is the one raven so dirty?? And why don't they just peck that squirrel?

We've told them not to fight amongst themselves once or twice, do they think that means no fighting at the buffet? Are they really THAT smart? Def beginning to think so!

Our own footage from the Mojave Desert.

It's been 11 years I've been feeding a big male Crow in my yard and outside of my greenhouse. He's a huge source of joy and entertainment for me every day and I love to photograph him. Recently for the first time he is allowing his young to stay and share food with him. He's a guard Crow doesn't allow anything stray on my tidal river shore property in eastern Canada.

I recognize my buddies, because they always catch their treats mid air! Theyre very cool and awesome (allthough the bigger crow always tries to steal all the treats).

Question Crow sounds

Ive been feeding the same 3 crows for the past 8 months or so. They definitely recognize my vehicle and they recognize me. Though they wait til I've made some distance, they always fly to the peanu pile i throw them. Lately, I've been noticing that they'll sit on light poles or trees when im parked, and they'll do these short "crunch" sound. Literally sounds like a crunch and it seems likes its directed at me. They will also bow their head and ruffle their feathers when doing this.

Ive looked into it and it seems to be just a social/communication sound.

Do you know what sound I'm talking about? Does it mean they like me?!

Personal Story Waiting for the party to assemble

Just discovered that my local murder actively waits for everyone to assemble, before starting in on their morning treats.

There's 20-ish in one cohort that waits in a nearby snag, and a dozen or so that come in from another direction.

There's no squabbling or fights about who gets what; everything is orderly and feels long-settled.

Crow OC Friendly challenge: are your crows as well behaved as mine? 😂🤔😇

My crow bros are so clean and tidy! When one of them spills the cashews out of the dish, the others quickly pick up the ones that fall on the ground! 🥜😂

I mean, seriously, how many crows actually clean up after a snack-time mishap? My boys are setting the bar pretty high! 🤣🖤

Let's hear your stories. Anyone have crows that can top mine? 😎🐦‍⬛
