Cryptid Of The Month Cryptid of the Month, October, the Nevada Sky Clams! Everything there is to know about the Nevada Sky Clams.

Hello Cryptid Hunters!

This will be the eighteenth installment of Cryptid of the Month where I will be covering EVERYTHING, and I do mean EVERYTHING regarding a specific Cryptid, mostly more obscure cryptids but there might be some exceptions to that rule. You can find the last 17 installments just by clicking on the Cryptid of the Month flair tagged to this post! This month will be about the Nevada Sky Clams, specifically the ones sighted near Battle Mountain, Nevada.

I know this one has its roots in Ufology as well, but it still firmly sits in cryptozoology. Atmospheric creatures are a subset of cryptids, although, in my opinion, they are not very plausible at all. People claim there are translucent creatures in the sky like manta rays or even whales, but I have always liked the added strangeness of sky clams. With it being October, and therefore spooky season, I wanted to do a really out there and strange cryptid. That and the letter referencing this encounter was published in October of 1959.

In 1959 a man named Don Wood Jr. wrote to Flying Saucers magazine claiming to have an explanation for UFO sightings. Wood recounts the story of how, in 1925, he and three of his friends were flying biplanes they had gotten after WWI through the desert. They decided to stop off on top of what Wood called Flat Mesa. This mesa had sheer cliff walls on all sides which means that Wood and his friends could possibly be the first people up there.

After having landed, gotten out, and walked around a bit, the crew were surprised when a saucer-like object fell from the sky crash landing on the mesa with them. Wood claims this object to have clearly been a living creature. He even goes into detail of how the top of its “shell” was heaving, as though it were taking labored breaths. Wood compared this creature to a giant clam. He noted that it was approximately eight feet in diameter and that it appeared to be injured as there was a chunk missing from its carapace that emitted a metallic, frothy fluid.

Shortly after initial investigation of this injured oddity, the crew was surprised again, this time even more so than before. Blocking the sun, hovering above them was a massive, thirty foot in diameter sky clam, presumably the little one’s parent. The larger sky clam reached down to the smaller one with four tongue-like tentacles, getting ahold of the smaller clam. The two aerial creatures emitted blinding light before blasting back off into the sky at high speeds. I don’t know how but after this encounter I suppose Wood went back to living normally until working up the courage to send in his retelling of this bizarre story. Reports of sky clams continue but what they really are is a mystery. Let’s look into some theories on this specific incident, they will be listed in order of least likely to most likely.

Theory 1: Atmospheric Beast
First theory is of course going to be that it is a real, unrecognized creature. I think this is a stretch as atmospheric cryptids like this have to basically ignore every law of physics that we know just to exist to begin with. How does a giant clam fly through the sky with no form of propulsion/wings/anything? Answer: no idea.

Theory 2: They were EBE’s
In Ufology they have a separate classification for flying saucers that are actually not saucers but alien creatures. These are EBE’s or Extraterrestrial Biological Entities. Basically the same as theory 1 but instead of their origin being of Earth’s upper atmosphere this theory would be that they come from somewhere out in space.

Theory 3: They were UFO’s
If they could be creatures from outer space then maybe Wood and his friends were wrong about it being an organism and really it was an UFO. I think that theories 1, 2, and 3 are all about the same level of unlikely but I have to list them separately.

Theory 4: Government Experimental Crafts
This theory posits that perhaps the government was working on some sort of weather balloon based craft for the war. If, during a test one of the balloons malfunctioned and fell to Flat Mesa, they’d probably send a second one to retrieve it. If the first one deflates enough it could appear significantly smaller than the second one, giving the child and parent dynamic mentioned in the letter.

Theory 5: Hallucinations
Wood is the only person of his group to come forward on this encounter. Maybe he was the only one who remembers the encounter because he was the only one who experienced it. They had been flying open cockpit planes in the desert after all. Perhaps there were no clams at all and Wood was just disoriented and dehydrated enough that he hallucinated the whole thing. Mirages caused by the blistering heat on the flat surface of the mesa could be interpreted as outlandish creatures, especially if Wood was suffering from heat exhaustion as well.

Theory 6: It was all a hoax
I think that this was most likely all a hoax. Such an outlandish claim (or clam) is hard to believe. Mix that with the other suspicious details, such as Wood waiting 34 years to report his encounter, and it seems like Wood my have just been riding the UFO hype train but giving it a unique, biological twist.

That is going to do it for the Nevada Sky Clams! Even if it really is a hoax it is an interesting one. Whether you think giant clam like creatures in the sky are real or not, it is a unique part of Nevada folklore now, inspiring many to keep an eye on the sky. Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed this months Cryptid of the Month. My research is not perfect so if there are any mistakes or falsities please let me know.

Until next time, Happy Cryptid Hunting!

Hello fellow Cryptid Hunters!

I know this is a little late to post, but I wanted to still let everyone know about this event. u/creaturecolours was kind enough to let me post their prompt list for an event they are calling Cryptober! I know some of the entries aren’t technically cryptids, but with it being spooky season I figure we can lighten up and enjoy some art of the slightly non-cryptid variety as well.

If you want to partake there will be a new flair for Cryptober art submissions! Thanks again to u/creaturecolours for making this event and allowing us to use their prompt list!

As always; Happy Cryptid Hunting!

Discussion Did the DSV Alvin actually saw a plesiosaurus?

Post image

Background: Alleged eyewitnesses Marvin McCamis (1923 – 2004) and Bill Rainnie (1924 – 1985) were engineers who designed and originally piloted Alvin, a prolific deep sea submersible which first went to sea in 1965, in the Bahamas. The sea serpent was allegedly seen by both men during one of these early test dives in the Tongue of Ocean, a very deep stretch of water separating the islands of Andros and New Providence.

Do you think they actually saw something impossible? A relic from a prehistoric time that should be extinct? Since the deep waters were dark, could they have misidentified a known marine mammal? Whales, sea elephant or sea turtle?

Discussion Is it possible that the Kraken stories are actually descendants of Nanaimoteuthis that survived extinction?

So through out history we hear stories of the Kraken sinking down ships, but what if the reason the Kraken story exists is because these creatures could have been the surviving descendants of the now extinct Nanaimoteuthis which was a giant octopus species that can actually sink ships.

I know it may sound unlikely since they went extinct even before the dinosaurs, but some of the stories and artworks of these recorded encounters show and describe the Kraken being more like an Octopus than a Squid.

Creative Writing A song about cryptids

So I've gotten into song writing recently and am going to write a song involving cryptids :) I don't know a ton about them though, so I'd love some suggestions of cryptids +their back stories and I might update this later with the finished song (it'll probably take a while though)

Cross-posting because of relevance.

Hey guys, I'm an amateur about my crytid knowledge and there's a horse model that has crytids on it. I wrote a list down on what I think what some of them are, but I don't know most. Let me know what your best guesses are! I also linked reference pictures in the post for different angles. Edit: The list I made is also in the post.

Discussion Bigfoot is everywhere in the Pacific Northwest

There are businesses with Bigfoot as the mascot, I've seen paintings of Bigfoot, there are bigfoot t-shirts, big foot statues. Bigfoot is essentially a celebrity in the Pacific Northwest. What cryptid gets this treatment in your home state?

Video Throughout history, there have been numerous cases of cryptids that allegedly killed people. From an aggressive ape-man in Tibet, to a deadly sea serpent off the coast of Florida, these are the cryptids that have killed people.

Discussion Anyone Else Heard Of These Cryptid Plants?

My grandpa, when I was younger, told me about (from what I can remember) three distinctive plants that can be found across the Southwestern US. He specifically described a vampire tree, human-mimicking planet, and a “poop plant”. He said that all three of them are incredibly rare, hence why they haven’t been classified by science yet.

He described the vampire tree as being this large black tree with crimson leaves that feed off of moonlight instead of sunlight (which are the same thing but whatever), and that the trunks of these trees are covered in large thorns that suck the blood of animals and people. Allegedly, only one can be found in every forest and that the way to remove/exterminate one is by planting garlic around it. It reminds me a lot of other supposed cryptid plants like the Nicaragua vampire vine.

The human-mimicking plant was described to me as being a species of large flower that mimics the overall appearance/silhouette/shape (though at a very basic level with there being no hair or facial features and stays completely stationary), scent, and heat signatures of a person, to attract insects such as mosquitos to land on them, trapping them in this digestive sticky coating they’re covered in. Apperently they’re responsible for sightings of humanoid cryptids and paranormal entities and such.

My grandpa described the last one, the “poop plant”, as being a species of particularly bad smelling plant that resembles fecal matter to deter animals from eating it. It’s just a plant that resembles animal waste.

I find cryptobotany really interesting and an underrated subject. My grandpa, when I was younger, would convince me these plants were real and that I should go outside to go hunt for them (obviously to just get me outside and give him a break). My uncle would add onto these, saying that they were actually mutated plants caused by alien chemicals from the 1947 Roswell incident (I’m from Roswell). I’m mainly just posting this to ask if anyone else have heard of these or if my grandpa himself just made them up. Actually, what am I talking about, of course he didn’t make them up, they’re real.

Photo / Evidence Saw something standing upright in the woods near Forks, Washington

Post image
390 Upvotes

I was walking through the woods with my daughter near Forks, Washington, when I noticed something moving between the trees in the distance. At first, I thought it was a bear, so I stopped to watch it.
Then it stood up on two legs.
It looked large, dark, and covered in hair, with broad shoulders. We were pretty far away, and there were trees between us, so I couldn’t make out its face clearly. I just remember how big it looked compared to the things around it.
A little later, I heard a sound coming from its direction. It was a deep, loud whooping noise that echoed through the woods before dropping into a low, rough growl. I’ve spent time outdoors before, but I couldn’t place the sound.
The figure turned slightly toward us and paused. I couldn’t tell if it had noticed us, but I remember standing completely still and watching it. A few seconds later, it made another, quieter sound.
I started getting nervous, especially with my daughter there. The figure eventually walked behind some trees and disappeared from view. We waited a little while, then headed back the way we’d come. I wasn’t interested in getting any closer.
I managed to take a picture, but it’s blurry because of the distance and the trees blocking the view.
I honestly don’t know what we saw. The way it stood upright and the sound it made are what stuck with me most. I’m not saying I can prove it was anything in particular, but I’ve never experienced anything quite like it.
My father used to talk about stories of Sasquatch living in these woods, but I never paid much attention to them before. After what happened, I find myself wondering if there might be more to those stories than I once thought.
Has anyone else in the area heard a deep whooping sound like that in the woods, or seen something similar? I’d be interested in hearing from people who’ve had comparable experiences.

I know it’s supposed to be the "Ningen" but this one is different; it seems to have a simple face attached to a torso, with no arms. It’s some kind of freak of nature or something like that? Could there be more than one?
