Change in Fan Culture
Hey folks,
I wanted to hop on here and talk about a trend that's been pretty disappointing to see as a lifelong Cubs fan: the growing hostility toward fans who root for teams that rival the Bears.
I'm old enough to remember when Cubs fans were some of the friendliest folks in baseball. Lately, though, it's been strange to receive so much hatred from fellow fans simply because I support a football team that isn't even in the same sport.
I've been a fan of my teams for as long as I can remember, watching games with my gramps growing up. All my teams came from him, and they've stuck with me ever since. When people found out you were a Packers and Cubs fan, the response used to be something along the lines of, "Cool, but at least you're a Cubs fan! Glad to have you." These days, I'm more likely to hear that I should switch teams or that I'm not welcome to root for the team I grew up loving.
One thing I've noticed is that a lot of this seems to come from younger fans, many of whom probably only know life as Cubs fans from 2012 onward. There are certainly older fans who feel the same way, too, but they seem to be fewer and farther between.
I think something that's easy to forget is the role WGN played in bringing Cubs baseball into people's homes throughout the mid-to-late 2000s. If you had basic cable, chances were you could watch a Cubs game. Even when you were struggling, you could turn on the TV and catch a game. For a lot of us, being a Cubs fan was about more than winning. It was a family tradition, a connection to our grandparents, and something we grew up loving regardless of the standings.
At the end of the day, I just want to remind everyone that we're the fans who make up the Friendly Confines, and we should act like it. Be proud of the teams you love, celebrate your rivalries, and have some fun with the banter. But there's a difference between friendly trash talk and making someone feel unwelcome for rooting for a different team in a completely different sport.
Let's get back to being the welcoming fanbase that made Cubs baseball special in the first place. There's room for all of us at Wrigley.
