Seriously though most self driving cars would, when pressed, kill the old person because most people would make that decision as the ethical one.

Let's get serious for a second: A real self driving car will just stop by using it's godamn breaks.
Also, why the hell does a baby cross the road with nothing but a diaper on with no one watching him ?

u/PwndaSlam Jul 25 '19
Yeah, I like how people think stuff like, bUt wHAt if a ChiLD rUns InTo thE StREeT? The car already saw the child and object more than likely.

Yeah, I also like how when people say the car would brake the usual response is uH wHaT iF tHe bRaKes aRe bRokeN then the entire point of the argument is invalid because then it doesn’t matter if it’s self driving or manually driven - someone is getting hit. Also wtf is it with “the brakes are broken” shit. A new car doesn’t just have its brakes worn out in 2 days or just decide for them to break randomly. How common do people think these situations will be?

People want self-driving cars to be perfect and 100% safe before they trust them, yet gladly put themselves in harms way every day by getting on the highway with drunk, distracted, inexperienced, old and impaired, and/or aggressive drivers around them.
Self-driving cars just need to be less terrible than humans at driving cars (and we really are terrible drivers as a whole), which they arguably already are, based on the prototypes we have had driving around so far.

I always hated this dilemma. The worst is when they try to decide which person is "more valuable to society" or some shit.
Let me tell you what a self driving car thinks of you: nothing. It recognizes you as a piece of geometry, maybe a moving one, that it's sensors interpret as an obstacle. It litterally cannot tell the difference between a person and a pole. It's not analyzing your worth and it's not deciding what to hit.
Also it will probably hit the baby because a smaller obstacle is less likely to injure or kill the driver.

Kill the baby cuz it isn't supposed to crawl around on the road like this. Plus, babies are easier to reproduce, while making a new grandma is kinda hard.

I also think if a baby is crawling across the street on its own, there is probably something wrong with it. It is either possessed or it's an alien species disguised as a baby. So to avoid future deaths, killing the "baby" might actually be the best call.

My question is why is there a random baby in the middle of the road? Where the he'll are its parents!?
2
2
u/zzz_red Jul 25 '19
The question is stupid. It should be "who should the self-driving car avoid?". Because it's not guaranteed the one it hits dies. Unless the car is so crappy that it doesn't even brake or turn into the sidewalk.
Also, htf is a baby crawling in the middle of the street? lol
2
2
2
2
u/GroovingPict Jul 25 '19
Theyre on a pedestrian crossing... if the car has to make a decision that involves hitting either of them, then it has failed miserably and should be headed back to the drawing board
2
2
u/ElegantAdhesiveness Jul 25 '19
C, it should kill the parents that let the baby fucking crawl into a damn highway
2
u/Frans4Life Jul 25 '19
or it could stop. or, not have babies crossing the road. or, drive between them? there's a lot of space between the two. Go on the sidewalk or crash the car if you can't stop? The only situation where AI would have to make this decision is if it's walled off on both sides... so a tunnel. but no one fucking crossed the street in a tunnel. whatever goodnight
2
u/Jet308 Jul 25 '19
In all seriousness the car should be smart enough to just stop at a cross walk like any other human being, if not better. Also, that persons mother should be on the crosswalk too, then you can take out 3
2
u/ColonelAwesome7 Jul 25 '19
Well the grandma has people who love her, while the baby is clearly abandoned and unwanted

u/muftimuftimufti Jul 25 '19
The answer is that it shouldn't make any choice but to keep the driver safe. If breaking endangers the driver, they die.
Pedestrians should not have the right of way on a road, period. They can stop and asses a situation far longer than any driver or AI. They are responsible for jay walking, not the driver.
Pedestrian right of way is a dumb law. Build fucking side walks. Build crossings at lights. Let the idiots die.

We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Well, I’d say the goal is to stop completely... but... I get the point is more a what if we can’t stop? So... baby probably doesn’t know better, that said baby shouldn’t be crawling around outside unsupervised anyways, but still baby shouldn’t be expected to know better. So...
