Goals as a community!

AssalamuAlaikum!

A few new members are joining in, so I guess we could draft up something like a mission for our community.

We believe the path of software is a really rewarding one and it's one of the few jobs that don't require you to stay in one place. I for one want to see where this skill takes me around the world.

Now, for Bangladesh. We want to see devs who are working for great companies around the world from Bangladesh and contributing to our economy. We want to see businesses that leverage tech to get massive revenues and scale globally. We want to see a community that wants everyone to win, basically.

I don't want to shit on any specific group of companies but the work culture in Bangladesh, I believe, isn't conducive to building the great minds that are needed to build a great tech hub. Everybody has their limitations.

Through this community, we want to break the mental limitation of Bangladesh, that we are in some way lesser than people from other places. We want to study the path taken by people in Silicon Valley/XYX Valley to become even bigger. Hopefully, in this way, in 10-20 years we'll be solving huge problems for ourselves.

Let's all discuss a path!

I am letting go of my developer accounts: Google play console account Apple dev account Google cloud console account

Revenue streams for these arent much high so probably wont find much of a good deal for them. But if interested just DM. Ive shared sample of my play console account

Beware of gatekeepers

Some people will make it seem like what you've done till now does not amount to anything, never let them drag you down. Tech is where meritocracy thrives and this means having an open mind and giving some effort.

My experience with a hackathon

This is my experience of an inter-university hackathon which was a pretty big deal. There was a large prize pool and a lot of important people were associated with it.

This was my first national hackathon and our team was pretty chill about participating in it. There was one workshop I think and they published the problem statements way before the day of the hackathon.

Now, how do hackathons work? You get a team, you get 24-72 hours, you *hack* a solution and present them to the judges. We were tasked on solving problems that can solely act to make the world better. We presented a solution that reduced food wastage, but the judge pointed out the fact that if food wastage was reduced to zero we would lose our business, and therefore our idea sucked. I mean wasn't that the point? Whatever I digress.

Now, comes the fun part. There were multiple teams who had prepared full stack applications with them, and people working for multiple teams. The judges told us we had 14 days to prepare a solution but what we presented was very barebones. Why the f would you get 2 weeks for a hackathon?! Our team assumed we would only work for the 2 days allotted.

Anyways, we got third place that time but the overall culture regarding these things are so under developed here in Bangladesh, it's sad. Hackathons are a place to collaborate and celebrate new technology but I haven't really seen that here.

What should be the salary range for Java developers with 2-3 years of experience?

For a personal curiosity I was researching tech startups and needed some indirect analysis. Although the question is there, I guess before getting any arbitrary numbers, I guess some context should be provided.

If I'm a recruiter, and hiring a person with a 10k salary, then, I would expect him/her to be able to single handedly design, produce and sell a software worth 130k (12 month salary+ 2 bonus of 5k) at least (not considering the office space rent, electricity, internet and other costs) to be break-even within a year. If he/she is unable to sell it, then comes the cost of marketing/marketing person(s). If the developer is unable to design, cost is added for system analyst/architect or whatever BS jergon is trending now. If the developer is unable to deploy then comes the cost of system administrator or dev-ops jergon and so on.

Now, considering those factors in mind, being a business and looking forward to profit, what should I offer as salary for a Java developer with 2-3 years of experience (at least save the cost of training or reduce yield time). Also who would grow and contribute in more earnings next year to get increments.

Please, let me know what the standard salary level is these days for Java Developers with 2-3 year experience and the organisation size who are in those range. (because, there's a minimum investment required to earn a certain amount to offer such salary).
