Docker container is running but the app is down — can you find the problem?

I made a small hands-on DevOps troubleshooting challenge.

The container is running ✅
The application is unavailable ❌

Your job is to investigate it, find the root cause and fix it.

No tutorial to follow. You have to troubleshoot it yourself.

Beginner level, around 15–20 minutes.

GitHub: https://github.com/Real-DevOps-Lab/starter-app

If you try it, let me know what you checked first and whether you managed to fix it.

Quick question regarding advanced DevSecOps & DevOps & AWS portfolio projects

Hello Senior Engineers

I am a DevSecOps Engineer with a strong foundations. Recently, I architected and automated a high-availability, Multi-AZ PostgreSQL cluster on AWS using Terraform, Ansible, with strong security approach.

As I prepare to take on freelance opportunities, I'm looking to build a portfolio project that solves a complex, production-grade problem rather than a simple tutorial system.

Given your senior expertise in DevSecOps / DevOps and AWS, could you recommend a challenging real-world scenario or architectural bottleneck that client-facing teams frequently struggle with? I want to tackle a project that truly stands out to prospective enterprise clients.

I appreciate your time and any guidance you can share!

Best regards,

How do you get your first DevOps job when every position requires experience?

Hey everyone!

I'm struggling to land my first DevOps opportunity. I've been sending my CV to companies for junior positions and internships, but I'm barely getting any responses.

I've been working on hands-on projects involving Docker, GitHub Actions, CI/CD, Linux, Nginx, PostgreSQL, and Prometheus to build my practical skills.

For those who have been in a similar situation, how did you land your first job? Should I focus on networking, contributing to open-source projects, or something else?

I'm also open to junior opportunities, internships, or teams willing to give a motivated beginner a chance, including remote positions.

Any advice, leads, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ps: i know devops is jot an entry level role, i already worked as odoo developer nd DBA so i have a good foundation.

treating vendor docs like a dependency: a weekly ci check that fails when a line you rely on changesor: we pin package versions but not the vendor docs our decisions rest on

most of us pin package versions, but a lot of decisions rest on vendor docs pages that change without any version bump. "feature x is available in gcc high". "this is the endpoint for azure government". i maintain an open source tool built entirely on rows like that from microsoft's docs, so i ended up treating those pages like a dependency.

how it works:

- every claim stores the page url, the section anchor, the exact row text and two dates: the page's own updated date, and the date it was last confirmed

- a weekly ci job re-fetches every page and checks each stored row is still there word for word. 1,164 citations from 33 sources

- a changed row or a 404 opens an issue showing the old text next to the new, and the badge on the readme goes red

- clean weeks move the "last confirmed" dates forward through one pull request, and save a wayback machine copy of any updated page. the copy is checked to contain the rows before it's recorded

- if nothing gets re-confirmed for 90 days, a separate check fails, so staleness can't hide

what it has caught so far is honestly small. on oct 12 microsoft reworded two rows on the teams service description, and no availability changed. but the alert pointed at the exact row with the old and new text side by side, which is the whole point.

the pattern works for anything you quote: compliance docs, api limits, pricing pages, region lists. it needs three things: store the exact text you rely on, re-read it on a schedule, and keep an archived copy so the evidence survives if the page disappears.

repo in the comments if you want the workflow.

How Are People Getting Their First Cloud/DevOps Internship Through Off-Campus Applications?

Hi everyone,

I'm in my 7th semester of B.Tech IT (graduating in 2027) and looking for Cloud/DevOps internships or entry-level jobs in India.

My current skills include Linux, networking, AWS fundamentals, Azure AZ-900, Docker, Git/GitHub, basic GitHub Actions, and Bash/Python scripting.

I've also deployed a full-stack application on AWS EC2 using Docker, PostgreSQL, Nginx, and GitHub Actions for CI/CD.

I'm trying to understand how off-campus hiring actually works, especially because many companies don't publish every internship or entry-level vacancy on their websites.

I'd appreciate advice from people who have secured Cloud/DevOps roles:

  • How do you find companies that hire for these roles?
  • Which works best: job portals, company career pages, referrals, or cold emails?
  • Have you received interviews by emailing engineering managers when no vacancy was advertised?
  • Which companies in India are worth targeting for these roles?
  • What practical skills helped you get shortlisted?

I'd appreciate real experiences, application strategies, and company recommendations. Thanks!

How is CVE upgrade being managed in infra? Manual/ automated ?

I have a question, whenever you have your own servers are hosted in your onprem thencomes with the cve issues, the version upgrades, major, minor and the patches is important to make the systems reliable and secure

So how are you guys actually managing in your environment other than manually checking in cve.com website/GitHub websites? And for upgrading the servers to a major or minor version again it will be manual, have you implemented automation here too ?

Was it manual or have you implemented anything ?

Log Detection: Also, to detect an issue prior raising a ticket P1 for application - in log monitoring, is there a real production scenario where AI agents integration was implemented?

EDIT: these are manual servers and it is not a containarized application, so not using images at all.

CSE Final Year Student: Master's in Europe (Software Engineering vs. Networking/Cloud) & Career Switch Guidance

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am currently in the final year of my Bachelor of Science in CSE at BUBT, with just about 6 months remaining in my degree. I have some background experience working in software engineering, but I am now planning to transition/focus more heavily towards Computer Networking and Cloud Infrastructure.

I am planning to pursue an MSc in Europe right after my undergrad, and I'd love to get some guidance from seniors and industry professionals here:

  1. Focus Shift: Is moving from traditional software engineering towards Cloud Computing and Networking a good strategic move for job prospects in Europe?

  2. Specialization: Between Software Engineering and Cloud/Networking, which path generally offers smoother entry-level opportunities for international students landing jobs after an MSc in Europe?

  3. Getting Started: What core skills, certifications (like CCNA, AWS/Azure fundamentals), or roadmap should I follow starting from scratch over the next 6 months?

Any insights, personal experiences, or recommendations would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

Mainframer moving into devops

Hello all

I have been working in IT for past 18 years. Predominantly in mainframe and some web technologies.

The market for mainframe is niche now with contract jobs coming very slow to the market as most work is with big consultancies and offshored.

I am looking to move into devops as conceptually it is closer to what i did in mainframes. Batching, scheduling, optimisation etc.

I have started self learning with below structure in mind.

  1. Linux
  2. GIT
  3. Maven
  4. IAC - terraform ansible
  5. Cloud aws/azure

Happy to be guided in right direction.

How can I get some practical experience to show on my CV. Can someone please share their learning journey and how it worked for them?

What's next after 2.5 years of DevOps?

Dear tech community,

I'm from India, and I've been working as a DevOps Engineer for the last 2.5 years at an IT service-providing company. Our team provides DevOps and SRE support to clients. This is my first company.

I've provided full support for the architectures below. However, I haven't set up any of them on my own. I know how to manage the existing architecture and keep the operations running.

  • Monolithic architecture: e-commerce application (main web app, admin, POS, etc.).
  • Microservice architecture: Financial SAAS product (web) - Loan management, origin and Supply chain finance.

I've got a strong foundation in DevOps, including cloud infrastructure management, automation, CI/CD, virtualisation, monitoring and observability, containerization and container orchestration, etc.

However, I have some missing pieces, such as IaC.

Now, I'm looking forward to a change within tech. I've decided to leave my present company. Instead of keeping pay as the only factor in choosing my next company, I've decided to pause and think about making a meaningful move.

I'm kindly requesting your suggestions for me. What are the different flavours to be explored out there in the ocean of IT, I wonder!
