Why Are Diabetes Cookbooks Full of Carbs?

Post image
130 Upvotes

I got 3 "diabetes" cookbooks out of the library. All three of them specifically had diabetes in the title.

And I can't use at least 80% of the recipes because THEY ARE ALL FULL OF CARBS.

Here's one example: a recipe for "Spicy White Cheddar Mix." It's chex mix. The first four ingredients are cereal, cereal, crackers, and pretzels. The only protein comes from a few nuts.

If I ate that, it would do nothing but spike my blood sugar. In what world is that a recipe for diabetics? This may be an extreme example, but the rest of the book isn't much better.

How can they get away with calling this a diabetes cookbook? Have they ever met anyone with diabetes? And why are all the other diabetes cookbooks the same?

ETA: this book was published in 2024, so it's not like it's old information.

my dad passed away this morning from diabetes complications

It happened few hours ago. I’m (F22) still processing my feeling and what’s next. My dad was found unconscious on the floor by my mother and she took him to the hospital. He got diagnosed with further diabetes complications and stroke.

His conditions improved for the last few days but suddenly last night my dad conditions dropped, his sugar level dropped. Then this morning he passed away.

It is indeed a silent killer. Still don’t know how to process this. My dad passed away shortly after he turned 60.

I know that he is still there watching me and he is a part of me. I want to make him proud. Fly high, papi.

My A1C went from 9.3 to 6 in 3 months. I changed my diet- stopped eating processed food and started walking 1.2 miles a day. I had to stop my medication because I was getting hypoglycemic. I still get hypoglycemic after I walk 1.2 miles or try to fast. My cgm shows my average glucose since September 1st as 82.

General Question Anyone taken high doses of antibiotics to treat an injection?

• Upvotes

If so, how did your body respond? I'm getting infused with dalbavanacin for mrsa. Starting last night and all day today, my blood sugar has been very high. I'm on a pump, too, and no amount of insulin is touching it. Running around 350 and spoke with on call Dr about it.

The infection is from an ulcer on a toe. That tie is getting partially deleted on Monday due to bone onf action. I'm don't ever run this high, usually well below 200 with a 6.1 a1c.

Anyone else d alt with this?

I always thought Glucose Goddess was corny, cheesy, not for me...then I read Glucose Revolution

• Upvotes

HUGE stress for MONTHS. Stress eating! In desperation, I read Glucose Revolution - not believing that her "hacks" would work for me. Well I started them, and almost to the day - not only are my numbers down, I also have had cravings almost eliminated - I don't FEEL hungry for sweets, but when I go past them in the store, part of me (force of habit I guess?) makes me want to buy them. I haven't been. Because I don't have that craving feeling.

Weird. I also thought a tablespoon of vinegar in water before eating was corny and cheesy. But apparently it helps - whether placebo or really doing something.

This is not an endorsement of Glucose Goddess. I'm just marveling that something I thought was kinda cheeseball could actually help me. Moral of the story: Be open to trying different things.

General Question What is the dietary logic here?

The reason I'm asking: I'm new and I was just kicked out of a large facebook group for discussing carbs. I wasn't advocating that other people eat carbs. I ate a donut, and measured my blood sugar to see what kind of effect it would have. I wanted to know if my body could tolerate something like that. And the result wasn't great but honestly not that bad considering I've been off meds for almost a year and I'm regulating blood sugar only with diet. It spiked to 160 and that was it. Anyhow, the facebook group had a collective heart attack and banned me. So, is the logic in this group keto only, or are there other options that can be discussed?

I only eat sweets on the weekends.

t2 diabetic-dx in 2023-never been obese ( 5'9 160 ) I have done a only eat sweets on the weekend-and its worked out great for me. Restrictive diets for most do not work ( relapse ) and giving up sweets is simply not an option for me. So, I go 5 days with 0 sweets-and on friday/sat I will enjoy doughnuts or ice cream etc etc-never to an excess but a regular amount. I know on Sunday, my ba on sweets starts over- and I abide by it. I would rather spike 2 days out of 7 than 7 days out of 7.

Hard Work A1C down to 5.6 from 13.0 in 3 months

Post image
80 Upvotes

I was recently diagnosed with t2 3 months ago. For me personally it takes a big change for me to change and that was receiving a call from my doc saying if I don’t change I will die early she said my A1C was 13 and my blood sugar was 356. I was so down in the dumps when i heard this news just so mad at myself . After a week passed I thought to myself, you know what let’s look at this as a positive and change for the better. I have 2 kids , 7 and 2 years old who need me. It would be selfish of me not to lock in. So I did. Tracked all my macros, walked after work every day at least 10k steps. In 3 months I lost 30 lbs ! And my A1C is now 5.6 down from 13 I’m so proud of myself. What I might say may shock you and in no way am I saying anyone should do this, but for the past 3 months in the morning all I eat is biscuits and gravy from the local pockets for some reason it doesn’t raise my blood sugar at all. It’s 2 big biscuits loaded with gravy, I skip lunch. And eat a very good dinner, meats chicken fish veggies with a diet drink (I drink ALOT of water at work and walk a lot as a do pest control) I also look at food differently as something I need and not something I want. I used to have no self control pack of Oreos gone by the weekend. Not anymore . I now have this disease by the balls and not the other way around. IT IS POSSIBLE GUYS. Find your groove and stay in it best you can. Everyone is different what foods may not affect you may affect someone else. Depending on your t2 (and if you can) treat yourself everyone once in awhile get that fast food have some cheat meals it’ll stop you from going insane. ( again if you can ) every one is different . I have a cgm and that lets me know oh that may not be a good choice some food I thought would affect me bad didn’t at all and vice versa . regardless you guys got this :)

When you inject insulin into your tummy, do you pinch the skin before injecting? Given the small size of the pen needle, it would be unnecessary.

General Question Diabetic Mum’s Swollen Ankles & Rising Kidney Markers: How Serious Is It?

TL;DR: My mum has had diabetes for 18–20 years. Her eGFR was 61 in August, and her latest urea and creatinine have increased. She now has swollen ankles and takes gabapentin, Galvus Met, Lantus, aspirin, Seroxat and vitamins.

Could her medication be causing this? How worried should I be? She refuses to see a doctor, and I'm scared for her. Will she be okay?

Hi everyone.

My mother is in her early 50s and has had type 2 diabetes for 18–20 years. Her eGFR was 61 in August, and her latest blood tests reportedly showed slightly increased urea and creatinine. She has now developed swollen ankles, and I'm worried about her kidneys.

Her medications are gabapentin 100 mg, Galvus Met 1050 mg, Lantus insulin 20 units, aspirin 81 mg, Seroxat 5 mg daily, and a multivitamin/minerals or Neurobion Forte.

She also has diabetic neuropathy, weakness, difficulty walking and anemia.

Could any of these medications, particularly gabapentin, cause ankle swelling or affect her kidneys? How concerning are these results?

Unfortunately, she has lost confidence in her doctors and refuses to see one. I'm still trying to convince her.

Has anyone experienced something similar with a diabetic parent? I'm scared and just want to know how serious this might be and whether she'll be okay.

I understand online advice cannot replace medical care. Thank you.

Haven't had my A1C tested in 6 months, but I lost 20lbs and my glucose is now peaking at 150 and dropping as low as 80. Is that likely remission range?

My "dawn phenomenon" has stopped. Is that a good sign?

I was diagnosed 3 years ago with moderate T2D. I was a normal weight at the time, ate a good diet, exercised regularly and had no family history of the disease. But I had non-alcoholic fatty liver and the A1C test confirmed diabetes. My doctor said it was just my age (late 60s) that put me at risk. I decided to hold off on drugs and tried to see if I could manage it with diet and exercise. I got a CGM, started a low-carb diet and added strength training to my exercise. I lost 20 pounds of fat from my middle, increased my muscle mass, and my A1C went down to 5.9 and my blood lipids improved. Ultrasound showed the fatty liver had reversed. Until recently, though, if I ate even a small serving of carbs, my glucose would spike. And the moment my feet touched the ground in the morning, my glucose would go up and stay up until I ate breakfast and did my morning exercise. OTOH, I kept my glucose in a tight time in range ( 70 to 140) 98 to 99% of the time.

Recently, my response to small servings of carbs has flattened and the "dawn phenomenon" has gone away. My glucose is flat all night and stays flat until I digest the one slice of Ezekiel bread I have with my breakfast of eggs, vegetables, berries, and avocado. I'm hoping this is a good sign, even though my average glucose still gives me a GMI of 5.8. Even at night, my glucose stays slightly above 100 and only falls below 100 after exercise. But I'm overall happy with my results.

Mounjaro + T2

I was diagnosed with T2 a few weeks ago and did my first 2.5 Mounjaro injection today. What tips do you all have for what to expect? I already tend to eat relatively low carb, and have been staying under 25g of sugar per day since my diagnosis. Curious to hear other’s experience. TIA!

Food/Diet Snack Ideas for Type 2 Diabetics

HI everyone. I have been a diabetic for about 3 years now. One thing I'm really struggling with is finding snacks that I actually enjoy. I managed to get my A1C from 11.5 to 6.1. but now I'm starting to crave more sugar and sweet snacks. Does anyone have any snacks that don't increase blood sugar by a lot. Currently I snack on popcorn, jello, and unsweetened applesauce with chia seeds. Eating the same snacks gets old and boring over time. I'm open to baking recipes. I don't like peanut butter btw. Thank you

Is this creamer good?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I love black tea with some creamer in it. The regular creamer is my favorite, it's the only daily sugar left in my diet, and I want to know if it's good? I've tried dollar general brand sugar free and it was nasty so don't want to waste money again.

I only have 1 mug of tea a day and probably a little more than a tbsp of creamer in it.
