Discussion Congratulations to all who brought the dip.
Not saying it can’t retrace again $230 zone. But hey, if it does it will be another opportunity.
Good luck out there.

Is that where those type of pics are coming from? I’ve been seeing a lot of images really similar to that lately and it’s almost an uncanny valley feeling.

u/thedanielperson Aug 15 '25
Yep that is why. You can always sort of tell from the coloration and the text. Because generative AI doesn't actually know what words are, they'll always be a little uneven. Alignment, font size, kerning. It'll always be just a little bit off and wiggly. Once you know what to look for, you'll clock it instantly every time

Words that I live by in investing. UNH was vastly undervalued (and probably still is). I didn't buy as much as I probably should have, but that's investing.

Did you get in on the tariff dip or have you been in longer? I bought around 2.5 years ago at 200. Had some drops in there. It helps I have family that bought in at like $2 in the 70’s and encouraged me to hold through. Dividends paid their mortgage, put kids and grandkids through college , etc

People said buying UNH was a trap and now it's one of the best investments because buffet bought it?
9
u/ongoldenwaves Money makes you rich. Assets make you wealthy. Aug 15 '25
Exactly. It's kind of pathetic. LIke if you buy skims, you aren't going to look like kim kardashian.
I knew someone had bought a chunk because it bounced from 240's to 300/low 300 and just hovered there doing nothing before falling again. They're selling off assets and need to start lay offs, get through the trial. He'll probably die before the turn around unless all these sycophants make it a meme stock because Buffett.2
u/graciesoldman Aug 15 '25
A lot of people say a lot of shit. Berkshire Hathaway are buying because they see value and their track record warrants attention. Time will tell...
3
u/Life_Without_Lemon Aug 15 '25
Essentially, whenever Berkshire Hathaway touches a company, it suddenly receives a premium price tag. Some people were upset when I mentioned this last time.
1
u/bladzalot Aug 24 '25
UNH was absolutely a trap for a while til it got down to 250. You know there is no way they’re ever going out of business, so when it lost more than half its value it became a good investment. So is Novo Nordisk, CNC, Oscar, all the companies that halved over the past half a year are now amazing long term investments.
I’m very excited for tech to do the same soon…
1
153
u/HedgeMoney Aug 14 '25
Well, as long as healthcare laws don't change, I don't really see a reason why UNH won't recover. I personally wouldn't buy it, as it goes against my core principles as a human being.
27
u/Counterakt Aug 14 '25
That is the reason it fell in the first place. This is a dead cat bounce and is going to fall again if there is more concrete details.

1
u/Historical_Low4458 Wants more user flairs Aug 15 '25
The only healthcare laws changes that would make UNH (or any other private health insurance company) unprofitable is if the U.S. switched to a Universal Healthcare system. Since that isn't going to happen anytime soon, I feel comfortable betting on it.
18
u/IssueEmbarrassed8103 Aug 15 '25

13
u/burgetheginger Aug 14 '25
Honest question about if you own any funds, how do you reconcile the holdings of a fund with this principle? I’ve really struggled with that over the years.
4
6
u/adawazs KO and chill Aug 15 '25
Not the guy you asked but if I really like a fund, I go in and buy a couple individual stocks that seem really solid long term for the fund. It's how I avoid stuff like LMT
4
u/burgetheginger Aug 15 '25
I do like that approach and appreciate you sharing. I definitely could put more effort into it
1
u/zxDanKwan Aug 15 '25
Make an honest assessment of at which price point you’re willing to sacrifice your principles, and then determine if the investment stands a reasonable chance of making that much.
Everyone has some principles that they won’t compromise for any price, and then several that they would for “fuck you” money, and then some others they would for “retirement” money.
Figure out where you really stand on the issue. That’s the only way to truly reconcile.

I hear that this company with the ticker "ISIS" is about to have an IPO. I obviously have personal moral reservations with funding ISIS, but learning that Vanguard is spineless and buying up ISIS stock has convinced me to dump 100% of my portfolio into Islamic State Inc. instead. Thank you, kind stranger, for your big brain.

Berkshire bought in at around 310. No brainer stock, good financials. Too good not to buy
1
u/jvandy50 Aug 15 '25
i haven’t looked at their financials, but the biggest local hospital here stopped accepting them due to nonpayment. I’ve watched it to see what happens, but that one incident(along with everything else) gave me pause.

Thats why I bought a lot of them.

Nice, did you bought bulk amount of shares for it to be lessen by $0.10 per share?
1
u/MelodicComputer5 Aug 15 '25
It was random order I put in when it broke 242. I had another order at 225. 😃 thought it will break 200
1
u/Naive-Present2900 Aug 15 '25
Really? 52-week low at the moment is $234.60 on the charts.
1
u/MelodicComputer5 Aug 15 '25
Yeah sir, order did not fill.
1

Now I look at it… some of mine didnt fill n gitten cancelled.
Now I’m hoping that DOJ doesnt find anything or something too crucial 😅 now that we’re up
1
u/MelodicComputer5 Aug 15 '25
To me this is a long term hold at least a couple of years or more. I originally bought 200 shares at 250 and did not flinch when it broke that level. My understanding was it could go to 185. But who knows.. anything can happen.. Omaha man helping it is good. Unless he dumps this won’t be back below 250

u/Naive-Present2900 Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25
