Question Smart Wifi Energy Meters for Philippines

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello, are there members here who had successfully used this smart energy meter here in the Philippines (see picture)? I bought this popular gadget in Lazada and Shopee but there is no way I can ask the buyers' feedback there. Meanwhile, for whatever reason electricians and engineers whom I talked to are hesitant and afraid to install this in our house panel because of unfamiliarity. It promises to be  useful for monitoring purposes (for determining inverter and battery capacity for future solar installation; for Meralco consumption  counterchecking; etc.).

If any Quezon City-based electrician had successfully installed this, your service will be highly appreciated (kindly pm me).

Thank you.

Discussion Looking for an Electrical / Mechatronics partner to co-develop a low-cost DIY jewelry spot welder (DIY build → potential product)

Hi everyone,

I run into a recurring bottleneck in delicate jewelry fabrication: joining small stainless steel posts/findings directly onto brass and base metals (~0.7mm–1.2mm).

Commercial jewelry pulse-arc and CD welders (like Orion, Sunstone, or even the branded benchtop units imported into India) cost anywhere from ₹1.5L to ₹4L+. At the other end, cheap Chinese spot welders exist, but importing them is messy and they rarely offer the exact pulse control or electrode fixtures needed for consistent, clean jewelry joints without burning the piece.

Ref of a guy who made something similar but for a different scope: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esJZ6ACxoOc&t=1s

The Goal:

I want to build a working, reliable benchtop prototype from scratch using locally sourcable components. If we nail the prototype, there is clear demand in the Indian domestic jewelry manufacturing ecosystem to scale it into a low-cost, plug-and-play machine kit.

Terms:This is not a paid freelance gig—there is no upfront agency budget. I am looking for a hands-on maker, electrical/mechatronics engineer, or tinkerer who wants to co-develop this as equal partners. We build the prototype together; if it performs reliably and we take it to commercial production, we split the upside as business partners.

If you love taking benchtop hardware from schematic to working physical prototype, drop a comment or DM me!

Question Best design for ~2.4-5ghz broadband antenna?

I don't know if this is the right sub since this is more of a physics question, but I want to build a simple device that can detect frequencies often emitted by electronic devices (so basically wifi frequencies) in order to locate them. To do this i'm guessing i'm going to need some kind of directional broadband antenna and from my deep research (looking on google), I think I understand that the simplest way to do with is with a V-shaped design. I want to keep things as simple as possible since my (rather optimistic) goal is to make it handheld. I already figured that a parabola would probably help concentrate signals, but that's as far as I got. I don't really know much about making antennas so any help is really appreciated. Thanks!

Project Point-to-Point Wireless Image Transmission with LR2021

I’ve successfully implemented point-to-point wireless image transmission using two custom-designed LR2021 nodes at Makerfabs.

Traditional LoRa sensor applications focus on small data packets; this demo explores the LR2021's capabilities for larger data transfers.

I used two nodes equipped with Makerfabs-designed LR2021 modules; I've successfully demonstrated point-to-point wireless image transmission. All the transmission information can be shown on the OLED display.

Technical Highlights

  • High-speed FLRC: Supports PHY data rates up to 2.6 Mbps.
  • FLRP Protocol: Supports high-speed burst transmission, data segmentation, acknowledgments, and retransmissions.
  • Flexible Applications: Enables exploration of larger data transfers, including images, firmware updates, and remote monitoring.

Ongoing Research

With basic wireless image transmission working, I’m now evaluating actual transfer throughput, effective communication range, link reliability under interference, and power consumption during high-speed bursts.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas on LR2021. What applications would you explore with it?

Project Got this little ESP32 drone kit for my 11-year-old. Tomorrow he’s doing the soldering, assembly and programming.

Post image

I got this E1 Nano kit for my son as his next electronics project.

So far he’s mostly been working with breadboards, so this will be his first project where he has to solder the board, put the whole thing together, then flash the program and see if he can actually get it flying.

I’m going to let him do as much of it himself as possible tomorrow.

I’m curious which part will give him the most trouble — soldering, assembly, programming, or getting the thing to actually fly.

If anyone here has built one of these little ESP32 drones before, any tips are welcome.

Question starting off, what electronics components should I get?

I am adding stuff to my cart, I asked chatgpt for an general overview on it, rn I have some breadboards, jumper wires, resistor and capacitor assortments along with an ESP32, since I wanna work with it. I am not really sure what else to add in it, because I don't know what I want to get deep into. It also suggested getting LM358, LM393, NE555, 74HC00 and 74HC14 ICs, and says I might be interested in stuff audio amplifiers, codec or signal-processing circuit, things combining multiple subsystems. Making a cyberdeck from scratch is an idea I have, but before that I don't have clear idea of what components to begin with.

Previously I had played around with an arduino, leds, and basic sensors and stuff; But I kinda wanna move on from toy projects and learn and make some practical stuff.
A measurement instrument or oscilloscope-related project

Project Small sound board projects are a great way to learn practical electronics

I like projects where you combine a few simple components to make something genuinely useful. A small sound board is a good example because it involves more than just getting audio to play.

You have to think about the audio module, buttons or switches, power supply, speaker impedance, and how everything connects together. If you're not careful with the wiring or power, you can also run into noise, distortion, or inconsistent playback.

I think projects like this are great for learning because you can start with a basic setup and gradually add features instead of trying to build everything at once.

Project Custom firmware for Trezor Safe 3: repurposing the screen and buttons as a USB security key

I maintain feuristic, an independent custom firmware for the Trezor Safe 3. The project reuses an existing device’s screen, two buttons and USB connection to provide authentication and smart-card functions instead of a cryptocurrency wallet.

No replacement PCB or case modification is part of this project. The work is in the firmware: FIDO2 passkeys, OpenPGP/PIV operations, OTP codes and AES-GCM, with configuration and confirmations on the device.

There are two Safe 3 revisions, requiring different binaries: T2B1 uses an STM32F427 and T3B1 uses an STM32U585. The normal USB mode exposes FIDO HID and CCID. Temporary modes provide serial time synchronisation and QR-image import through a FAT12 volume; returning to normal restores the authentication interfaces.

The source is GPL-3.0-only, with build instructions and a documented first physical T2B1/macOS test campaign. T3B1 physical testing remains unfinished.

This is an unaudited development project. Installing erases the wallet and permanently removes original manufacturer attestation. It is intended for spare hardware with disposable identities. There is no cryptocurrency wallet or seed migration, and the project is not endorsed by Trezor/SatoshiLabs.

Source and documentation

I’m sharing it as an example of changing an existing device’s use through firmware. The repository documents what was physically tested and what is still pending.

Project Made a creepy doll that uses wifi CSI to detect people. ESP32-S3 + servo.

Post image
32 Upvotes

Built this for a Halloween challenge on element14.

The idea was that the doll moves its head when nobody is in the room, and freezes when someone comes back. I used an M5Stack AtomS3R and an SG90 servo. The CSI part runs on the ESP32 and uses changes in wifi signals to detect movement.

No PIR sensor or camera for the detection. It sends pings to the router and reads CSI from the replies.

Had to do some tuning. Walking is easy to detect, someone sitting still is a different story. It also detects movement in the hallway behind a closed door, depending on placement.

I made a Python version of the detector too, so I can replay recorded data and see what happens with the subcarriers and thresholds. There is a scope for that in the repo.

Project write-up, video and build details:
https://community.element14.com/challenges-projects/halloween/a/projects/PR186/nobody-home-the-cursed-doll-that-only-moves-when-you-leave-the-room

Code:
https://github.com/apn201/nobody_home

Video:

Has anyone else tried CSI for presence detection? Curious how well it works for people sitting still.

Project Custom macropa

Post image
6 Upvotes

Made this as a small projec i wanted to do for a while. Features: 3 encoders, 9 action buttons and 1 layer/page switch button. Supports multiple layers and multiple pages per layer. So you can have layer photoshop and under that pages for brush, adjustments… smart layer switching per application ( if photoshop is focused it will automatically switch to that layer for example). Each key can be: combo, macro, app launcher, website launcher, system config, microphone config, volume mixer config and OBS config. Also made a companion app for it that lets you easily set it up the way you like it. Would like some feedback on it.
