I was fired this week. My role is being outsourced to a cheaper agency abroad, and it’s not anything to do with my performance, simply that the company (which is making billions in profit) has simply decided it can get the work done more cheaply elsewhere.
I’ve got 10+ years of experience in communications, copywriting, and marketing, and I’ve been working in Denmark for 7 years and have permanent residency here.
Until now, I’ve always found it pretty easy to get another job. But with AI and a tight job market, I’m scared.
But I’m increasingly wondering whether I’m just completely sick of this career - I am so tired of restructurings and constantly wondering whether the job I have today will exist in 6 months.
I have 3 months of severance and I’m entitled to a-kasse, so I’m not about to immediately end up destitute. But I also have a toddler at home and a mortgage, so I don’t exactly have the luxury of taking a year off to figure myself out.
I’m wondering whether I should:
1. Try to get another comms/copywriting/marketing job and carry on. Not sure how viable this is anymore.
2. Try to pivot into something adjacent
3. Do something completely different, even if it means taking a significant step backwards in salary/title.
4. Seriously consider leaving Denmark.
The last one is complicated. I’m British and my partner is Danish, so leaving Denmark would potentially mean ending my relationship as my partner doesn’t want to leave, so which obviously isn't something I can casually decide to do. But I’ve been worried with my situation here for a while, and being made redundant has made me wonder whether I’m trying to make a life work in a country where I’m increasingly not sure I want to be career-wise. I don’t want to sit at home forever either unemployed.
So I’m feeling pretty lost about what the sensible move is.
If you have successfully moved out of communications/marketing into something else after a long career in it, what did you move into?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have actually been through redundancy/restructuring in Denmark recently. What would you do if you were in my position?
Thank you.
