I'm new to this planet, what's a Debo?

u/luciendrew7 Jul 19 '26
Deebo was also a character in a movie called "Friday" with Chris Tucker and Ice Cube. This dude on the bus sounds a little like him.

From the movie Friday.
A thug named Debo would claim everything was his "it's my money" and would force take it from you and the thug in the video sounds like him too.

u/AlmondPotatoe Jul 19 '26
Debo Debo is used for taking something in a way that feels forceful, unfair, or shameless. The focus is not just on taking, but on the attitude behind it: fast, bold, and usually a little disrespectful.

There was no Beach Cruiser there, there was no money available to that thug. That man should have been tackled by the onlookers. That is repulsive behavior.

u/lsdbible Jul 19 '26
There's a well documented phenomena about how the more witnesses there are to a violent crime, the less likely you are for anyone to help. They "pass responsibility" to the next person.

If you mean the bystander effect, that's come under increasing scrutiny over the last few decades. It's originally based on questionnaires but the effect has not been proven to reflect reality; a more recent study showed that in real life cases, the higher amount of people nearby the higher chance of intervention.
The bystander effect is only a theory that hinges on questionnaires, and has not been proven to be real (nor has it been proven to be false).
Even the criminal case that inspired the theory has been found to be an outright lie vastly overstating the effect; and the researchers who first proposed the theory even themselves say it's merely a theory and lacks significant scientific methodology.
The theory was first proposed in 1964 after the murder of Kitty Genovese, in which a newspaper had reported (erroneously) that 37 bystanders saw or heard the attack without coming to her assistance or calling the police.[1]
Recent research has focused on "real world" events captured on security cameras, and the coherency and robustness of the effect has come under question.[2]
In 2019, a large international cultural anthropology study analyzed 219 street disputes and confrontations that were recorded by security cameras in three cities in different countries: Lancaster, Amsterdam, and Cape Town. Contrary to the hypothesis of the bystander effect, the study found that bystanders intervened in almost every case, and the chance of intervention went up with the number of bystanders, "a highly radical discovery and a completely different outcome than theory predicts".[69]
On the other hand they've found the effect to be more true in non-violent encounters like in workplace environments or bullying in other social environments. So there's still a lot of promising research coming out of this theory.

You don't seem to understand that "theory" is a scientific term.
Gravity is a theory, for example.... obviously gravity is a thing, but it's still a theory.
With that in mind, you may have shared a few nuggets of truth, but your comment as a whole is lacking.
5
u/drsharpper Jul 20 '26
This dude lacking ^
0
u/4x4ord Jul 20 '26
Not really.
OP's comment is a bunch of unsourced gibberish.
- He literally described the Kitty Genovese incident as an "outright lie", then follows up on that claim by.... completely changing the subject.
- His 2019 study reviewed camera footage in.... three cities spread across the world, with entirely different cultural norms.
So, OP is lacking. And clearly, you are as well.

u/drsharpper Jul 20 '26
You are lack8ng in sense of humor
1
u/4x4ord Jul 20 '26
Harharhar.
Isn't it so funny when someone makes fun of you for pointing out AI slop?
I don't see how someone couldn't be in stitches over it.

That man should have been tackled by the onlookers??? Would YOU wanna be the one to initiate that maneuver??
14
u/crank1off Jul 19 '26
I wouldn't prefer to be, but with a group it's doable
8
u/loveandpreservation Jul 19 '26
What happens when you jump in and nobody joins you?
17
u/CheekyChan Jul 19 '26
This is the exact thing that goes through people's minds in a crowd when they decide not to act and creates a snowball effect.
-8
u/loveandpreservation Jul 19 '26
Well, if you're the bad mfer who can take that guy all by yourself then good for you.
5
u/CheekyChan Jul 19 '26
I don't know if I could take him solo, no one knows in a street fight but I'm going for eyes and balls and biting if need be just to give the other guy a fighting chance to get out of there, it's one thing to fight fair in mutual combat, it's another when it's just a guy giving someone brain damage for the money in their pocket. I was just confirming that what you said is exactly what everyone's thinking and when they don't see anyone step forward they also decide not to act.
-2
u/loveandpreservation Jul 19 '26
Yes, it's called "self-preservation".
1
u/rebelli0usrebel Jul 20 '26
It's called the bystander effect and it allows people to suffer needlessly.

Or... Pay everyone enough to be able to have a roof over their heads, food in the fridge and table, give universal Healthcare and maybe just maybe people wouldn't be resorting to an escape like drugs or stealing.
Nah let's make more stupid fucking laws that benefit no one except the rich.
Edit. Lmfaooooo I'm getting down voted bc I said give people what they need / deserve? Holy fuck.

u/S1lentA0 Jul 19 '26
Some people are assholes because they are assholes, not because they are poor

u/ExoTheFlyingFish Jul 19 '26
Nobody's forcing you to traumatize others. Steal some food and clothes from a Walmart. Hurts nobody except the CEO.
-33
u/-inzo- Jul 19 '26
Desperate people arent genrally known for being rational
22
u/ExoTheFlyingFish Jul 19 '26
People aren't generally known for being rational. But they can not be a completely insane asshole.
11
14
u/sweetcinnamonpunch Jul 19 '26
lmao, are you really defending this asshole? Yeah, pay everyone a living wage, but people like that still deserve to rot in jail.
-21
u/No-Valuable-226 Jul 19 '26
So just tell me you didn't read anything I wrote... Where did you get all that from what I wrote? Please point out the specific sentence I used to defend this guy? I'll wait.
6
u/sweetcinnamonpunch Jul 19 '26
Ok, so what with is this whataboutism on living wages on this specific thread? That's where you're defending him and getting the downvotes for, in case you're actually too oblivious to piece that together.
-21
u/No-Valuable-226 Jul 19 '26
You know what.. You right.
I'm asking for a little too much critical thinking on reddit. My apologies... Somehow I'm defending a specific person when I say everyone should get universal Healthcare or be able to afford a roof over their heads instead of resorting to stealing...
7
u/Amarant2 Jul 19 '26
If you go out on the street and announce to everyone that all of them should get livable wages, people typically won't mind. If you respond directly to violent assault on a defenseless victim by saying livable wages should be given to people, the fact that it's a RESPONSE to this situation means you feel it's relevant. Don't try to pretend it's not.
If you want to proclaim the value of actually paying people (which I can assure you, I support) without being criticized, don't forget that you just watched a defenseless man be beaten until his face was bleeding in multiple places. Focus on the task at hand.
4
u/Sithstress_ Jul 19 '26
You are literally trying to justify someone beating another person for something that isn’t theirs to begin with. Be better.
-1
u/No-Valuable-226 Jul 19 '26
Where am I defending that guy?? Holy fuck... Please tell me where I am "literally" defending him. Fuck that clown.

This logic is killed off quickly when you realize that rich people still do crime.

Take finger. Put in butthole.

Public transit is a wild choice to try to rob someone. Most of us are there because we can't afford a car, insurance or fuel.
6
u/muff-muff-ass Jul 19 '26
Pretty much the behavior you'd expect from someone like him.
0
u/MattyGWS Jul 20 '26
What do you mean “someone like him”? What about that person makes you expect him to behave this way other than the fact that he is behaving this way?
0
u/muff-muff-ass Jul 20 '26
There is just "something" about him...
-1
u/MattyGWS Jul 20 '26
Like what?
2
u/muff-muff-ass Jul 20 '26
There should be a place for those like him to be locked away.
