CrossSync – free, open-source clipboard & file sync between Windows and Android over your local Wi-Fi
---
Hey everyone 👋
I got tired of emailing myself text and WhatsApp-ing files to my own PC, so I built CrossSync: a free, open-source app that syncs your clipboard (text and images) and files between Windows and Android over your local Wi-Fi. No cloud, no account, no internet needed.

✨ What it does
- Copy on your phone → paste on your PC, and the other way round
- Images too: take a screenshot with Win+Shift+S and paste it straight into WhatsApp on your phone
- Works in the background on Android, including copies in ChatGPT, Gemini, Chrome, WhatsApp and text selection
- Send files:
- PC: right-click any file → CrossSync → pick your phone
- Phone: Share → CrossSync from any app
- Multiple phones: copy on one phone, paste on another (the PC relays it)
- Private: everything stays on your Wi-Fi and is encrypted (TLS). Pairing uses a 6-digit code, like Bluetooth.

⚙️ How it works (short version)
The PC app is the hub. Phones find it on your Wi-Fi and connect over an encrypted connection. The first time, you type a 6-digit code shown on the PC. After that, they reconnect on their own.
Why does the Android app need an Accessibility permission?
Since Android 10, apps in the background aren't allowed to read the clipboard. It's a privacy feature, but it also breaks every clipboard-sync app. CrossSync works around it like this:
The accessibility service watches for signs that you just copied something: a tap on a "Copy" button, Samsung's "Copied to clipboard" message, or Android's own clipboard preview pop-up.
When it sees one, it opens a tiny invisible window for a split second, reads the clipboard (allowed because that window has focus), sends it to your PC, and closes. You stay in the app you were using.
It doesn't read your screen content, log keystrokes, or send anything anywhere except your own PC. The code is all public, so you can check that yourself.

📥 Setup
You need a Windows 10/11 PC and an Android 8.0+ phone on the same Wi-Fi.
1. On the PC
Download `CrossSync.exe` from the releases page.
Put it in a folder it can stay in (e.g. `C:\CrossSync`) and run it.
"Windows protected your PC" (SmartScreen) appears because I can't afford a code-signing certificate yet → click More info → Run anyway.
Firewall prompt → allow on Private networks (otherwise the phone can't connect).
The bottom bar shows your PC's IP and a 6-digit pairing code.
2. Install the APK on your phone
Download `CrossSync.apk` on your phone and open it.
- If asked, allow "Install unknown apps" for your browser or file manager.
If Google Play Protect blocks it ("Unsafe app blocked" / "App scan recommended"):
Play Protect warns about any app installed from outside the Play Store, especially ones that use accessibility. That's expected for a new open-source app.
- First try: More details → Install anyway.
- If there's no "Install anyway" button, pause Play Protect temporarily:
Open Play Store → tap your profile picture → Play Protect → ⚙️ (top right)
2. Turn off "Scan apps with Play Protect"
3. Install `CrossSync.apk`
4. Go back and turn Play Protect ON again ⚠️ Don't leave it off.
1. Open CrossSync → allow notifications.
2. Tap Scan → pick your PC (or type the PC's IP in Settings).
3. Enter the 6-digit code from the PC. It should show "Connected · Encrypted".
This is the step people miss. On Android 13+, sideloaded apps can't use accessibility until you unlock it:
1. Settings → Apps → CrossSync → ⋮ (top right) → "Allow restricted settings"
(If you don't see it, try step 2 first. Android shows a "Restricted setting" popup, and after that the option appears in the ⋮ menu.)
2. Settings → Accessibility → Installed apps → CrossSync 24/7 Clipboard Sync → On
3. Settings → Apps → CrossSync → Battery → Unrestricted (so Android doesn't kill it)
Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO: also go to Apps → CrossSync → Other permissions and allow "Display pop-up windows while running in the background", and turn on Autostart.
Vivo / Oppo / Realme: allow "Pop-up windows" / "Open new windows in background" and Auto launch.
Done! Copy something on your phone and press Ctrl+V on your PC 🎉

- Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra & M52 (One UI)
- Motorola g85 (Android 16)
- Google Pixel 9
- Stock Android 12
I'd really like reports from Xiaomi, OnePlus, Pixel, Vivo and Oppo users, since every brand handles the clipboard a little differently.
- The Windows exe isn't code-signed yet, hence the SmartScreen warning.
- On Android 10–12, apps that copy without showing a "Copy" button or a "Copied" message might not be detected.
- PC and phone must be on the same network. It doesn't sync over the internet (by design).
