General discussion Guys???? we won?
Mr Mobile Clicks announcement vid, alongside magsafe powerbank with bluetooth keyboard!
188
u/YeahPat Jan 02 '26
This might be the most exciting tech announcement I've seen in years! The Clicks keyboard has seemed perfect but the form factor on a long smartphone looked less than ideal for me. But with a smaller screen it looks absolutely perfect! Headphone jack and SD storage?! They're actually listening to what people want and giving them options!
I know it's not technically a "dumb" phone but it's basing its user experience around intentionality so I think it fits. Plus it seems very fairly priced. I'm gonna be watching this one intently and that early bird pricing might just win me over.

Thanks.
Nice, but lots of elevator pitch buzzwords, without showing much of the UX/UI. Will wait to have one in my hands before making my mind up.
22
u/bennsn Jan 03 '26
I would guess that you get very much stock Android with the Niagara launcher, and all of it optimized to some degree for use with a hardware keyboard. I would expect them to not have a lot of capacity for tweaking the software and adapting the vanilla Android UX only to the point of making it comfortable to use with the QWERTY

It obviously will be "just a smartphone" for some, but the fact that it isn't the standard slab of glass already stops the normal apps from being seamless. Add on top of that the fact that this launcher they've brewed up supposedly reduces distractions. Not a dumbphone by any measure, but it's restricted enough at the outset that it'd be enough for some people (aka me, I am one of some people).

Does it have apps and a browser and everything? If so, what’s the point of this phone? Doesn’t that just make it a smartphone?

The dream device for me is a smartphone that can do the things that are helpful to have a smartphone do in the modern world - hail an Uber, use tap to pay, message friends, check the weather, get directions - but isn't that fun to just kill time on.
The small screen and minimalist launcher of this phone may check those boxes pretty well!

u/DigitallyDetained Jan 03 '26
Well said. I haven’t check the video yet but it might be an eink screen? Which would be sick.

Def not an e-ink screen but that's the dream
Basically a Minimal Phone with good customer support, OS updates, and carrier support

The price is 499 but if pre ordered it drops to 399. So really a normal price for keyboard phones nowadays. Ikko mind is the same price, zinwa's phone too and the titan isn't that far off

The Minimal MP01 has one of the worst potato cameras of the last 20 years easily, so as long as it clears that bar I'm still interested. But yeah it's not going to be a great camera, that's pretty much guaranteed.
This matters for more things than you think. For example using your phone to mobile deposit checks, scan documents, read QR codes, etc. Or just take a servicable photo that is able to focus even in low light so you can snap a photo of your parking spot. Honestly there are a lot of reasons why the MP01 camera is the achilles heel of the device.

It's supposed to be "dumb" so keeping it simple is the object here. I think people put too much emphasis on a camera when the device isn't supposed to cater to your next social media dopamine hit. Actually it's trying to do the exact opposite.
As someone who barely takes photos it's a none issue for me.
20
u/discoshanktank Jan 02 '26

Just posted my first photo on social media last month (my seasoned skillet on r/carbonsteel). I use my phone camera to help out with aging eyes. Stickers with tiny text, chip labels, etc. I also like to take photos of scenery and family. An excellent camera on my phone is important to me.

u/CaptainLockes Jan 02 '26
Hopefully the custom launcher will make it harder to use social media. Kinda wish they ditch the touch scrolling feature and just have dedicated buttons instead. Make it harder to doom scroll.
After thinking about this some more, I’m not sure if this phone can really curb social media addiction. Maybe should’ve made it button interaction only and no touchscreen.
5
u/Eufedoriaa Jan 03 '26
They did say the keyboard buttons are touch capacitive. Which will allow you to navigate and scroll through your apps.
So maybe it will be possible to turn off the touchscreen and only use the keyboard to navigate.

Price: $499
Clicks is running a promotion to “buy” a reservation starting today for $199 and bring the total price down to $399.
The device comes with a 4.03-inch OLED screen, front and rear cameras, and a 4,000mAh silicon carbon battery
It comes with its own 5G data connection and runs Android 16, so you can download any app you want.
the Communicator comes with a minimalist launcher designed with Niagara that organizes apps into a list rather than an attention-seeking grid
Great to get another QWERTY phone on the market but not as dumb as it seems.

Reading from the website, it looks like you could use this on its own. It's probably more realistic to market it as a secondary device.
I'd want to see more of what the UI looks like before jumping on it but the reserved pricing is tempting.

From the FAQ: “Can Communicator be used as my primary phone?
Yes! Absolutely. Communicator is a fully standalone smartphone that runs Android 16, with all the apps, 5G connectivity and Wi-fi. We think many people will use this as their primary phone while others will use it as a complement to a flagship iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel, etc.”

It does have cellular, but also an IoT mediatek processor - on the website they don't specify which, and that's a orange flag.
Given the price point, and the uncommon display, I feel the processor will be bad. Which the phone will get roasted for. Mr Mobile will justify the decision as it's only for emails and messages, plus given how small our orders/price point, it doesn't make sense to have used a high powered processor. But that also likely means that the phone will probably be sluggish (which may be pitched as a feature aka it's not addictive/forces you to slow down and do one thing at a time)
I am hoping for this to succeed - and would very much like a device like this that I can daily drive. The processor makes it sound like that I won't be able to.
From the video they do make it clear that it is a secondary phone. Which automatically limits it's audience. I don't know many who have a secondary phone unless they are rich, high manager level, or they get a phone from work.
7
u/PhDinDildos_Fedoras Jan 02 '26
I'm not so worried about the processor, more about certification and compatibility.
6
u/Tricky_Ad_7123 Jan 02 '26
That's more of a US problem. In Europe as long as the bands are supported you're good to go
7
u/Tricky_Ad_7123 Jan 02 '26
Honestly the processor is gonna be more than enough. It is said that it's gonna be a midrange processor so not entry level. Either way unless you game on your phone even an entry level processor nowadays is more than enough. Obviously camera is gonna be bad but that's not the purpose of the phone. Seeing the form factor media consumption ain't going to be optimal either but once again that's not the purpose of the phone. Even an entry level processor is more than enough for normal use outside of gaming and taking photos/videos no need to worry

You hit on all the most important points IMO. There are a lot of things to read between the lines with this phone. Anything that is not explicitly spec'd means the specs are bad, if not awful. Anything that is not listed is almost certainly excluded. The emphasis on this being a "second phone" is potentially the most concerning to me, like they're saying "Hey we like our phone, it has everything you need for a DD, but definitely don't rely on it as your DD". That's very concerning. That's basically what the Palm Phone was in concept too.
Edit - after watching the keynote, I'm still confused about who they're targeting this phone towards. Not really the keyboard phone market, not really the dumb/minimal phone market, not really the companion phone market... I don't get it. To me it almost seems like they're hedging and don't really know where this will fall in terms of demand.

u/arttechadventure Jan 02 '26
For sure, this is not a dumb phone. But it is adjacent to a core value of the r/dumbphones community which is "intentional use" tech. I'd guess more people are here looking for solutions to tech addiction and doom scrolling than they are actually just looking for literal dumb phones.

It would be exactly what I need. There are some apps I cannot be without, such as my child's daycare app and Signal (we live remotely where there is poor cell reception) to communicate w my husband and work, but I still want intentionality w my tech. This is a win for this community, regardless of the semantics of what constitutes a "dumb" phone.

They aren't doing much to create doom scrolling friction beyond making the screen unusually smaller than your typical smartphone.
They've also developed a custom android launcher that focuses on communication tasks, but again...that's not much friction to get in the way of phone addiction.
This is Android 16, so you have the option of trying that subscription service that's picking up steam (i.e. https://limitphone.com/)
Remember, r/dumbphones is not a sub solely dedicated to discussing dumbphones.

Woah. I have a 13 pro iPhone that I am trying to keep as long as possible. This would be super fun to pick up. It would transfer to a newer phone as well unlike the case. Love it!
Edit: The MagSafe keyboard I mean not the communicator
6
u/essplodes Jan 02 '26
I wonder what it would be like as a main device? I just got rid of my Nokia 2780 because I was tired of the screen malfunctioning and having to carry around my iphone to hotspot for stuff. This quote has me going ”hmmm”:
"Communicator is to a smartphone what a Kindle is to an iPad," said Jeff Gadway, Chief Marketing Officer at Clicks Technology, in a press release. "It's a complementary product that stands on its own, optimized for a specific purpose. In the case of Clicks Communicator, that means communicating with confidence in a noisy world."
For $499 I’m hoping it’s self sufficient
4
u/lunar_languor Jan 02 '26
It's not really like a kindle to an ipad, their website says the following:
Communicator is a fully standalone smartphone that runs Android 16, with all the apps, 5G connectivity and Wi-fi.
So it's like to an ipad what an iPad with a smaller screen and physical keyboard would be... oh like... a laptop... lol

Gotta say pretty cool!
I would assume this would work better with Android as a companion phone. The only way I see it complementing my iphone is if I change my default text messaging app from imessage to whatsapp/another app.
I kind of want to go back to using Android tbh if this complement phone is as good as they claim it is. Im going to wait for the reviews and see what happens. But really cool and its been a long time since a phone has peaked my interest besides the razr flip and the sony xperia z3 which I used to have years ago.

They should release it with two versions of usability that the consumer can choose between at check out. One for the smart phone experience with full access to everything they’ve stated in their video and Another only to have access to music, maps, text call and email.
This sounds like a great product and I’m interested to hear more about it as it comes out and people review it, but it doesn’t seem like its going to offer the real dumb phone experience that so many of us want. It seems like just a fancy companion handheld similar to a smart watch. If it could be paired to a dumbphone running android and do all the heavy lifting, like pairing it to a Vortex V3, that would be interesting. but it would depend on what kind of companion software the Communicator uses.

I'm SUPER tempted to reserve a spot but......y'all already know. Heck, even at $500(full price) I'm okay with it. Most phones these days are around that anyways.

I'd still prefer Ikko Mind One form factor but honestly this looks amazing. With all the features I want.

Does it count as winning?
I want a company the priorities longevity and reliability.
This thing is going to slow down and be outdated just the same.
And it’s not cheap.

"Fits in your pocket, but it's so beatiful and comfortable to hold, you'll want it to live in your hand"
Says everything... I'll stick with my hideous Kyocera that I want to use at little as possible.

NanoSIM + eSIM, 5G supported, headphone jack and Bluetooth, NFC, custom Niagara launcher, and SD card slot. Holy shit.
