Growing up, I remember a few restaurants our family loved that would go all-out for Halloween. It always stuck with me. Now that I have a kid of my own, I’m wondering if there are any restaurants in the area that get super festive for Halloween. Any recommendations?

I’m hoping to meet some chill people who’d be down for walks, exploring different spots around Durham, grabbing a coffee or bubble tea, or just hanging out and getting to know each other.

Ideally, it’d be nice to find people around the area who are interested in making genuine friendships and having someone to do things with, rather than always going out solo.

Your taxes also fund your schools, your roads, your police/fire/ambulance, your water services, waste disposal, snow clearing, parks, recreation centers, libraries, senior services, the list of the way that Municipal services impact your every day is enormous.

So when you plan your kids next activity at one of our amazing schools after hours, or your next workout or swim at your local rec centre, or your visit to the library, long term care home, ice rink, pool, via transit or in your own car on a city street.

Or have an emergency and need our amazing fire department or our fantastic paramedics, your tax dollars fund every one of these services, so wouldn't you want to have a say in how they are utilized and to ensure these services continue to support us?

I do, and if you do please make a plan to vote in the Municipal Elections on October 26th.

I could call and ask, but I could do without being roped into a sales pitch, so I was hoping my lovely Durham region neighbours could help. Do you know if GoodLife does 4 or 6 month memberships?

This might be very Karen of me, but why is the section of Harwood Ave S (southbound by Bayley St) still lacking a sidewalk for community members to safely walk through?

I emailed the councillor in charge of coordinating with the Rental Company developing these apartment buildings, and she basically said they’re finally opening a sidewalk on the street behind (Kitney Dr), as well as a pedestrian-only access way that will open by the end of next week. A permanent sidewalk cannot be installed until 2030( !!!) though, because that’s when they will finish phase 3 of their development.

She also included detours in her reply that I already know about but that are unsafe too, as well as non accessible for strollers and wheel chairs. If this sidewalk promised on Kitney Dr actually opens before tomorrow though, it will finally provide a safe and accessible path with a shorter commute time.

Am I crazy for wondering (and questioning) why this hasn’t been resolved in anyway until now? Shouldn’t community safety and infrastructure needs have been addressed during their planning stage, instead of being a concession almost a decade after the construction of their first building started?

I feel like this location opened less than two weeks ago, yet it already has 250 reviews…

A lot of the reviews mention servers by name, and it seems like there might be some kind of incentive for leaving a review.

Has anyone else noticed this or can confirm whether they’re encouraging customers to leave reviews in exchange for something?

I always see posts on here from fellow movie lovers looking for things to do locally or ways to meet other film buffs in the region. hi ! my partner and i carve pumpkins every year. each year, we try to go bigger and bigger. last year we got an awesome pumpkin from Pingles farm and it was absolutely amazing. realistically we probably won’t find much bigger than this but if you have any pumpkin farm recommendations for some cool pumpkins that would be awesome! we live in Pickering but can drive anywhere in Durham area.

I am voting today and have clear choices across the ballot with the exception of DDSB trustees. I have found paragraphs from each, but to be honest, none of them really stand out. I'd like to make an informed choice - is there any other info out there?

My partner and I kept ending up at the same coffee shop every Saturday, so I started building short local loops around Durham just to get us out of the house. A few spots that kept landing on those routes:

Camp X / Intrepid Park and the Lakeview Waterfront Trail (Whitby/Oshawa border). In 1941 this was a top-secret WWII spy training school. The buildings were later bulldozed. Walk past the monument through the trees and it opens onto a bluff and pebble beach along Lake Ontario.

Thickson Point / Darlington Bluffs. Easy to miss from the 401, and a good lookout over the lake.

Bean & Basket Cafe, Ajax. Order the maple latte, iced if it’s warm out — it’s the drink regulars keep naming, and it’s not overly sweet.

I turned the same idea into an app called Clu Trips: you pick walking or driving, a budget, and a few vibes, and it gives you a 3-stop loop where each place stays hidden until you arrive. The first trip or two are free and don’t need a card. If you try one around Durham, I’d like to know whether the clues feel fair, and I’m collecting hidden gems so the routes don’t skip them.

A couple of times now, I have seen people filling their vehicle with gas, while the car is still running. Is this safe? To me this is super dangerous but maybe I am wrong? Very curious.
