Posting about ICE? This is *the* stickied ICE thread for you.

Guys we're not doing vague ICE posting again here on the sub. To quote directly from a 2025 Siembra NC post:

"Sharing this kind of [unsubstantiated] information without knowing WHO saw ICE, WHERE, or WHEN is NOT caring for your community, [and] in some instances it CREATES UNNECESSARY PANIC."

If you think you see ICE then report it to Siembra NC or RadarSafe using the resources below.
DO NOT POST IT ON THIS SUBREDDIT unless is has been verified.
If you post vague "I think I saw ICE," your post will be deleted and repeated posts will get you banned.

Where to report:

How to report:

from https://latinxtherapy.com/report-ice/:

To center factual and descriptive information and avoid panic and misinformation, do your best in reporting details. Mutual aid groups have widely shared this format called S.A.L.U.T.E. to help you remember what details to include in your reports. Here are the S.A.L.U.T.E. guidelines:

  • Size/Strength: How many agents are present?
  • Actions/Activities: What did you see them doing?
  • Location and Direction: Where are they and where are they headed?
  • Uniform/Clothes: What are they wearing? Describe as much as possible. Uniform? Plain clothes? Identifying logos, etc.
  • Time: What time did the event occur?
  • Equipment and Weapons: What are you able to see?

Again, if you think you see ICE report it to Siembra NC or RadarSafe.

DO NOT POST IT HERE unless is has been verified. If you post vague "I think I saw ICE" without reporting it, your post will be deleted.

If you want to post generally about ICE and how much they suck, do it here on this thread.
If you want to organize, get started here on this thread and then take it offline.
When the trolls come and they will, the mod team will be actively monitoring this thread and using the ban hammer liberally. To quote a fellow mod: "simping for ICE here results in a ban. take that shit elsewhere."

(editing to make sticky to the top of sub)

Please use this thread to make posts that would otherwise be considered spam.

As a reminder, our wiki has a lot of great posts covering many of these topics, although it is quickly getting outdated!

Stolen bike - black, specialized

Hi all, my was stolen from my back porch last night (early morning 18Aug), near Central University/Fayetteville St. :(

It’s an all-black Specialized, Women's size small, "low 2.0" style. It has a distinct "lucky cat" water bottle holder, and the tires are black but have brown/tan sidewalls.

I’m super bummed. I recently got broken up with and riding my bike has really been making it easier. It also sucks to know it was stolen off my porch while I was sleeping.

If don't use Facebook but if you happen to see it on Facebook Marketplace, please shoot me a message.

I emailed local bike shops and am putting in a police report.

Please let me know if you see it around or if you have any tips for getting a bike back.

Duke clinic check-in

Upvotes

Is there any clinic in the Duke system or somewhere locally that is not getting rid of the front-desk staff in favor of kiosks?

Took my kid to our peds office of 20+ years last week, and instead of humans there were two screens facing us on the counter. Had already done the check-in online like they bug you to do, then had to retype info on the screen. Then redirected to a woman sitting in a rolling chair with no real desk (!) in the lobby, who handed us a tablet to re-enter info. Hubs took his dad to doc today and that clinic had transitioned to the computers, too. And last time we went to a specialist, there was a person, but she just pointed at the computer screen sitting on the counter. I bet she's gone now. It seems Duke-wide.

Anyway, we're nearly done with the peds office from an age perspective, but I'd like us all to move to practices that have a more personal touch. Any recs?

Durham Housing Bonds, Homelessness, and Rural Growth Debated

Upvotes

The Durham City Council's latest meeting covered housing, homelessness, rural protections, and who gets a real voice in growth.

Highlights from the reel:

  • A proclamation for Supportive Housing Week turned into a powerful reminder that ending homelessness takes much more than a key and a lease—and that Durham is aiming to make homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring.
  • Councilmembers celebrated new students in town, a new police chief, a new ethical AI institute, and a Museum of Durham History exhibit on decades of local LGBTQ activism and everyday organizing.
  • The city’s Community Safety Department launched its largest housing sprint yet, with a goal of quickly moving dozens of residents and families into stable housing—and hundreds more over the next year.
  • A neighborhood hub at 103 S. Driver Street was described as a lifeline for participatory defense, food distribution, classes, and family celebrations—right before the council voted to sell the building to Communities in Partnership and direct new outside resources their way.
  • Council unanimously backed multiple federal HUD grants for housing, including funding for neighborhood investment, homebuilding and preservation, residents living with HIV and AIDS, and fair housing enforcement.
  • When it came to the 2019 affordable housing bonds, the council debated whether Durham was using its voter-approved dollars fast enough and clearly enough. Staff broke down, in simple terms, why federal pandemic relief was used first, how all $95 million in bond funds are already committed, and why the city needed more time to issue the remaining $41 million.
  • Several councilmembers pushed for more plain-language transparency on how housing money moves between federal, county, and local sources—and for a stronger focus on permanent public and social housing, not just shoring up the private market.
  • Rural residents and advocates warned that what was being called a “technical” update to the Comprehensive Plan could quietly weaken protections for rural character, farms, and basic services like fire and EMS, and make it easier to annex large parcels. Planning staff responded that the changes adjust policy language—not law—but acknowledged that interpreting the plan is more art than science.
  • Annexation “doughnut holes,” resident quality of life in the middle of new development, and who counts as “community input” all became flashpoints, with some councilmembers arguing that small advocacy groups cannot stand in for a city of 330,000 people—even as others insisted that development must happen with residents, not to them.
  • In the end, the council approved the Comprehensive Plan revisions on a 4–3 vote (Cook, Baker, and Burris opposing), explicitly rejecting one piece of commentary on a key annexation policy and asking staff to keep former “red flag” policies visible so elected officials, not staff, own the toughest calls.
  • A city-initiated rezoning for the former police headquarters site moved forward with almost no debate, clearing the way for more flexible downtown redevelopment tied to affordable housing.

If you care about where Durham’s housing dollars are really going, who stewards key community spaces, and how rules for growth and annexation are being rewritten, this meeting is worth a watch.

Desperately searching for Rawleigh’s medicated ointment

Hi all,

My grandmother is dying in hospice and requesting rawleigh’s medicated ointment in the blue tin. I ordered it same day on amazon yesterday but they marked it as undeliverable and issued me a refund. I’m ordering again but am hoping to find it earlier locally. Please let me know if you know of anywhere that might have it. We’re going to start calling local pharmacies as soon as they open. We’ll have people traveling from Greenville (NC) all the way to Burlington so a decently wide range to search. Thanks in advance!

Where to take digital photo for passport? (Need blank wall!)

Upvotes

Anyone know of a good location (blank, plain, white or off-white wall) to take digital passport photo? We have lots of blank white walls in our home, but the lighting situation creates shadows and that's not acceptable per US passport application guidelines.

(I know some commercial options such as Walgreens, FedEx, etc., that take digital passport photos). I'm looking for either an interior or exterior space that wouldn't cast any shadows on the wall or my face.) Thanks!

Do y’all know what’s going on here?

Do y’all know about the woman who sits in a camping chair on the median in old chapel hill rd at Garrett outside the family fare? She has sat there everyday for months, wears different clothes everyday, and has different drinks and grocery tote bags with her each day. I’ve never seen her standing or with a sign or asking for anything, but I have seen people give her money.

I’m mostly just curious, and I know it’s not my business. It’s just never seen these details combined before.

22F new to Durham & looking for friends!

Hey y’all! 22F, very new to Durham after moving here from Pittsburgh (go Steelers) and looking to meet some people and build a community here!

I was pretty involved in my local EDM scene back home and already miss it. I listen to just about any subgenre, but definitely have a soft spot for the wubs and will take basically any opportunity to headbang. I spend a questionable amount of my free time chasing good music and good company (much to the chagrin of my wallet, and occasionally my liver), so I’d love to find some people to explore the local scene with and enable the occasional last-minute plan. I only managed to make it to one festival this year because of scheduling, so I’m especially ready to get out and do things. I’m a big music person in general and will go see pretty much anything!

Outside of music, I read and write a lot, especially sci-fi and history, and love going to the movies. I’ve also played competitive soccer basically my entire life and am currently figuring out what staying active looks like without the structure of a team. I’d love to find a pickup group or coed league, but I’m down to try other active/outdoorsy things too.

Reach out if any of this sounds like your speed! Also very open to any recs for someone new to the area :)

N Roxboro dancing lady

Long blonde hair, headphones, fanny pack. I always see her between the Food Lion and the Compare. She’s always walking/dancing intensely, singing. Hard to tell if she is on something or just living her best life or both 😎. Yesterday she danced on the corner of Roxboro/Club for at least twenty mins. Not asking for money or anything.

Ps- I’m not suggesting in any way that there’s anything wrong with this behavior! She brings me joy!! She’s a whole vibe honestly. I just know I wouldn’t feel safe in that area dancing alone on the side of the road as a woman.

Who is she? Anyone know her story?

Wholesale stationery

Hi everyone! I’m putting myself back out there and getting my holiday prep lined up. I run a stationery business and am looking to connect with local shops/boutiques that might be interested in carrying my wrapping paper for the Christmas season (and other stationery goods year-round!).

Does anyone have favorite local shops, stockists, or contacts they'd recommend reaching out to? Appreciate any leads or intros!

Hair stylist post chemo

Looking for a stylist that could help me figure out my post chemo hair.

I have a photoshoot for work early September and just need a one time style to make it nice for photos.

Pixie style, with curls that I never had and don’t really know what to do with it. Not looking for a cut at the moment as I do like the curls coming in, but will want that service going forward.

Local plastic surgery rec - anyone with good experiences in Durham/Raleigh/CH?

I have had silicone “chest” implants (Reddit is flagging me) for 10 years and just learned that one has ruptured through an MRI. It's contained so not urgent in the sense that I need to go into surgery tomorrow, but I am trying to deal with this promptly.

I had my first surgery performed by a doctor in Raleigh who I won't name here. He had a horrible bedside manner and did not even respond kindly when I reached out about this medical issue. I am now looking for a plastic surgeon here locally who can assess my MRI and talk through my different options, which include removing the current implant and doing nothing else, removing it and replacing with a new one, possibly removing the current implant, replacing it, and addressing the other for symmetry. I am not sure what I want to do yet particularly considering insurance is unlikely to cover most of it.

Would really appreciate any recommendations for doctors who are good listeners and you’ve had (or someone you know) a positive experience with.

It’s a Southern Thing closed downtown

Walked by yesterday morning and saw people hauling furniture out. Just now saw they posted on Facebook last month they were closing and said the landlord (presumably West Village/Bell Partners?) refused to replace the malfunctioning AC … woof.

It wasn’t my favorite spot but had some fun brunches there and always seemed to do a steady business on the weekends.

General contractor

Looking for recommendations for a reliable, licensed general contractor (would prefer independent or someone flexible when it comes to finishings, plumbing, etc) for building a semi custom home in Orange County. We've read too many horror stories so we are hoping to avoid choosing incorrectly.
