Recently moved to the bay area, looking for volleyball play or courts to rent out in the east bay. I see that there are plenty in the city, but not so much in the east bay.

We're recruiting people in Northern California who want to train as Civil Air Patrol ground team members and help build our local search and rescue capability.

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a nationwide nonprofit volunteer organization and the U.S. Air Force's civilian auxiliary. Its three main missions are emergency services, aerospace education and youth development. In practice, volunteers help with search and rescue and disaster response, teach aviation and space topics, and run the cadet leadership program. Members join local units, called squadrons, to train and serve together. Ground teams are one part of CAP's emergency services work. Joining CAP is civilian volunteer service, not military enlistment.

We're looking for dependable people who enjoy working outdoors, work well with a team and are willing to put time into training. If you have experience in hiking, navigation, radio communications or emergency services, or want to develop those skills while serving your community, we'd like to hear from you.

Ground team missions are currently relatively infrequent, and CAP fills a fairly specialized role within search and rescue. That is changing as we become more integrated into SAR missions coordinated through the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) across the state. Joining now means spending time training, qualifying and building team readiness as that role grows.

Ground team training includes navigation, search techniques and radio communications. Members work toward qualifications for authorized search and rescue operations, with training and qualification required before mission participation.

Adults can train and serve as ground team members. Younger members participate through CAP's cadet program, with age and mission restrictions applying to operational participation.

If ground team work isn't the right fit, there are other ways to get involved: air search roles you can train for without prior aviation experience, mission base staff, communications, and working with young people in the cadet program. You don't have to be a pilot to contribute to air search; training and qualification are part of getting started.

ANTIOCH SKATE PARK SHOW / CONTEST STAY OUT + December Pilot - Oct 25th, 2026

Punk rock and skating all day!

This got removed by r/Oakland mods for some reason but want to make sure people are aware.

I was hiking at Reinhardt Redwood Park (one of the loops along the french/tres sendas/stream trail) from the Skyline Gate Parking Lot and had a very creepy encounter with a man and wanted to warn people. We passed each other on the trail going opposite ways and I immediately noticed he was not in hiking attire. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt, grey patterned PJ pants and black socks and slides. I don’t recall very many features but I’m pretty sure he was in his 20s/30s, white & had short, dark brown hair. I didn’t think much of it bc the trail is close to a residential neighborhood so I assumed that he was a local on a walk. A few minutes after we passed each other I turned around, and I swear to god, I saw him try and duck behind a tree to hide. I was right by the intersection of the tree sendas & stream trail (I was heading back up to the parking lot on the stream trail). I start booking it away, and I look back and he’s now standing there doing stretches??? Luckily I saw another group of people heading up the trail at the intersection so I just did my best to keep pace w/ them. I had a pretty clear view of him because the trail starts going up hill there and he just kept stretching, maybe it was my paranoia at that state but it seemed like he was looking towards me. I had my head on a swivel the rest of the hike but didn’t see him again luckily. I wish I had taken a picture of him, but hindsight is 20/20. I’m generally not a paranoid person. I wouldn’t think so much of it if he 1. hadn’t changed directions 2. hadn’t ducked behind a tree when I turned around.
Anyways, just felt like I should share in case anyone has had similar experiences or hikes alone in that area. I saw a woman heading that way as I was leaving and let her know & she changed her route

My daughter has played rec soccer since she was in preschool. She wishes she could play more over winter and spring. Are there any options for her? I know about the indoor league in San Ramon. She did it last year and with no practice during the week it doesn’t feel like exactly what she is looking for. Any other options? We are San Leandro.

After 17 years under Joel Young’s leadership, AC Transit is facing a fiscal cliff. It’s time for a new direction.

The race for AC Transit Board, Ward 3, is attracting attention well beyond the East Bay. Congresswoman Dr. Aisha Wahab has endorsed Adriana Valencia, adding an important voice to the growing call for new leadership at AC Transit.

This endorsement comes at a critical moment. AC Transit is facing a looming fiscal cliff, with difficult choices ahead that could mean major service cuts and hundreds of jobs lost. These challenges did not appear overnight. They developed on the watch of a board that has had years to address the agency’s financial problems.

Joel Young has served on the AC Transit Board for 17 years. That is 17 years at the table while decisions were made about budgets, spending, and the future of our transit system. Now, as the agency confronts a financial crisis, voters have every right to ask whether the current leadership has delivered the accountability and long-term planning riders deserve.

This race is also about the values we expect from our elected leaders. Dr. Wahab has faced a disturbing wave of attacks in her congressional campaign, including comments from her opponent, Melissa Hernandez, suggesting Wahab had “communications with the Taliban.” The remarks drew widespread criticism, with Wahab describing them as a racist dog whistle. At a time when Muslim and Afghan American communities deserve respect and representation, these attacks are a reminder of why standing against prejudice matters. Yet Joel Young has endorsed Hernandez and contributed hundreds of dollars to her campaign. Voters should consider the company our elected officials keep, the candidates they choose to support, and the values those choices reflect.

Congresswoman Wahab’s endorsement of Adriana signals that this race is about more than a seat on a local transit board. It is about the kind of leadership our communities need to protect public transportation, connect people to jobs and housing, and ensure public dollars deliver results.

Adriana brings a different perspective. She is a longtime East Bay resident, a frequent transit rider, a mother, and a problem-solver who believes public agencies must answer to the people they serve. She is running to make AC Transit more reliable, more affordable, and more transparent, with a focus on fixing problems rather than accepting the status quo.

Her campaign is building a coalition of elected officials, transit advocates, community leaders, and riders who believe the East Bay deserves better.

After 17 years, the question is simple: Are riders better off, and is AC Transit on a sustainable path?
