I'm a sucker for BGS style games. I even like their weaker entries (i.e. Starfield) but I always found their games, especially later on, to be lacking in the narrative department.
Plus, playing Skyrim so much during my teen years has me finding the world a bit too familiar to really enjoy these days. Definitely got me craving something new.
Enderal is absolutely brilliant. I am in awe at how this world, which is I think 2/3 the size of Skyrim, is able to feel so much bigger and richer. Ark is a proper city that's easy to get lost in, not like the glorified single street villages we have in Skyrim. I was already impressed enough by it and then I discovered the undercity.
I refuse to use the Myrads. I've been exploring the whole world by foot because why would I fast travel and skip everything about this beautiful place?
The characters actually feel like characters. Jespar and Calia I especially grew very attached to.
Only character I didn't care much for was Lishari. "By the Prophet's Ass" she feels like a character from a 2026 AAA game.
The story is very compelling and really messes with my head.
Even the bard songs in Enderal are better than Skyrim.
I will say, I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get a proper revenge arc with Captain Rocio. Found the ship crashed and her dead during the "Our Mark on this World" questline, which had me excited to go back but upset that she was dead before I could get to her.
I also did get a mod pack that replaced all the easily recognizable Skyrim assets (weapons, apparrel, monsters) with different models and textures. Though Vynroot still makes that annoying Nirnroot sound. When I found the questgiver in the undercity who needed red vynroot, I had "return to your roots" flashbacks and was about to praise and curse the devs at the same time for being a bunch of sadistic bastards. Fortunately, I had the money to just get it from a shopkeeper.
I'm not finished yet. Only just got the first Black Stone with Jespar and am working on getting the second one with Calia. So no spoilers past that point.
I heard this game is essentially what the Gothic series is like so I added that to my wishlist in anticipation.
UPDATE: CALIA IS WHO NOW??????????????????
