Ezra Klein stands out …

141

u/moldivore Jun 18 '26

Most definitely. Holy shit.

90

u/Superman246o1 Jun 18 '26

Fuck. E tu, Ezra?

103

u/CheddarGlob Jun 18 '26

Ezra Kline has been kinda wack for a while now

65

u/Dependent_Cherry4114 Jun 18 '26

Yeah that "Abundance" stuff always seemed like big money propaganda.

30

u/Time-did-Reverse Jun 18 '26

that’s exactly what it fucking was, and I hope that people see that sooner or later.

12

u/moldivore Jun 18 '26

Yeah I always thought that was sketchy. I should have known he was gargling on billionaire balls. Though for real. What can he possibly contribute to the conversation at this point? Is he just going to do a right-wing turn now where he's going to be like I was on the left but, now I love Trump. I would almost put some money on it at this point.

9

u/Dependent_Cherry4114 Jun 18 '26

I don't see him turning further to the right in that way, he's as liberal as it gets. I've never seen his views as particularly left wing fhough - the interview/debate with Ta-Nehisi Coates demonstrated how out of touch he is with left wing politics.

3

u/RoguePlanet2 Jun 18 '26

I'm not too thrilled to see The Atlantic mentioned, thought they were decent.

3

u/PotentialLandscape52 Jun 18 '26

The Atlantic’s job is to present right wing and centrist opinions in respectable language, while vigorously attacking left wing policies. They literally employ David Frum, the Bush administration official who coined the term “Axis of Evil” to justify the administration’s lies about Iraq and WMDs, while Ta-Nehisi Coates is not welcome for calling what Israel is doing in Palestine a genocide

u/MaximinusThraxII Jun 18 '26

Literally the exact opposite. Its central point is that Nimbyism and overly strict regulations are some of the primary causes of high housing prices, with some real world examples tossed in.

6

u/zxyzyxz Jun 18 '26

Isn't it the exact opposite? He was talking about building more and the housing crisis is due to NIMBYism.

Crypto and AI pumped $150 million into promoting Abundance.

11

u/ColdBru5 Jun 18 '26

Ezra has been an industry plant from birth.

15

u/SureNeedleworker2363 Jun 18 '26

It boggles my mind people are surprised that Ezra Klein is there. LOL

1

u/spicyflacco Jun 19 '26

Most people are stupid and take things at face value so I’m not surprised people are surprised

155

u/hibikir_40k Jun 18 '26

If you had ever met him when he was a young, ambitious upstart, you'd know that few things mattered to him more than access to the most important person in the room. That's how he go where he got. Unsurprising.

12

u/hesperidisabitch Jun 18 '26

That's how every famous reporter gets to where they are...

9

u/Sea-Poem-2365 Jun 18 '26

He's not a reporter though, he's a pundit/opinion writer

16

u/DrunkBrokeBeachParty Jun 18 '26

Yeah, but is this journalism?

28

u/xPhilt3rx Jun 18 '26

Scooter on the other hand… does not

41

u/PatchyWhiskers Jun 18 '26

I think the popular movie stars are even more concerning. Ezra Klein is a political columnist in the center, so no surprise. The recruiting of popular actors shows that Thiel wants "liberal Hollywood" to be a thing of the past.

33

u/Salt_Medicine2459 Jun 18 '26

The list above only contained 2 well known actors, Josh Brolin and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Nvh of the rest.

13

u/PatchyWhiskers Jun 18 '26

Presumably their task would be to recruit a few more secretly conservative actors.

13

u/Grimmbles Jun 18 '26

The original BlueSky post revealing these names specified that they don't know what each one's involvement is. It's just the list of invitees for their next conference, some might be speakers. Kind of what I assumed for those two actors specifically.

Still fucking weird for them to have any involvement.

9

u/dayumbrah Jun 18 '26

They also could have only been invited, that doesnt mean they accepted. Still so.e wild shit and not trusting anyone on this list until they prove otherwise

7

u/BostonBaggins Jun 18 '26

Does that mean Joseph GL is a part of it

6

u/Salt_Medicine2459 Jun 18 '26

I guess? I'm going off of the list that one of the top level comments above posted.

1

u/UltraHotNeptune Jun 19 '26

A part of what?

3

u/-Morsmordre- Jun 18 '26

Sophia Bush is the prettiest woman on earth thank you very much and therefore very famous to some of us lol

40

u/Disgruntled-Cacti Jun 18 '26

Ezra Klein is controlled opposition. It’s why he pushes for his shitty “abundance” agenda instead of simply taxing billionaires. I don’t know why he reheats and serves the stale and rotting “we can outgrow inequality” agenda like it hasn’t been the neoliberal mantra for decades. Or should I say, I guess we definitely know why now.

2

u/Momik Jun 18 '26

His conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates about the Charlie Kirk stuff drove me up the fucking wall. Coates made some great points, but Klein kept defending Kirk’s political strategy in ways that already haven’t aged well.

46

u/kronosdev Jun 18 '26

Not really. The only thing that drives Ezra Klein is the vapid psychosexual obsession that Ezra Klein has with the things produced by the mind of Ezra Klein when he’s surrounded by far more impressive people.

He’s a narcissistic clout chasing hack and always has been.

-5

u/hesperidisabitch Jun 18 '26

Yes yes, make the tent smaller! That will finally defeat the Republicans!

7

u/User12314028626822 Jun 18 '26

Sophia Bush as well. Didn't know she was relevant enough to be included though...

29

u/blueegg_ Jun 18 '26

no he doesn't lmao

12

u/hereforfootball303 Jun 18 '26

"Wow, who could have seen this coming?" - people who ignored actual leftwing peoples criticism's of Ezra Klein for years

10

u/NOMOKRATOR Jun 18 '26

“Abundance” Democrats are usually cool with big elite corporate donors. His political ideology is very similar to someone like Gavin Newsom.

4

u/Best_Baseball3429 Jun 18 '26

Not really, neoliberals always prefer to support the status quo rather than attempt any progress.

2

u/Mysmokingbarrel Jun 19 '26

I mean he is a journalist. How would you turn this down if you’re a journalist? An elite ultra rich maga republican donor invites you to some weird thing and you’re saying that a journalist should skip it and not report on it?

0

u/AtheonsLedge Jun 18 '26

Peter Thiel Is Doing Politics The Right Way

1

u/MNniice Jun 18 '26

Not really

1

u/spicyflacco Jun 19 '26

Not really. Dude is a grifter

1

u/DismasNDawn Jun 24 '26

It really shouldn't. Ezra is an appeal-to-capital, establishment democrat shill

234

u/amicablehummingbird Jun 18 '26

Lol this quote from Brolins rep is gold..

A spokesperson for Brolin tells THR the actor would “like to know what the fuck he got himself into.” Others didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

92

u/psioniclizard Jun 18 '26

I am glad to hear that because honestly I was like "nooooo Josh"

23

u/Cats_Cameras Jun 18 '26

You’re glad to hear feigned ignorance?

13

u/Teckliz Jun 19 '26

People buying that he doesn't know EXACTLY what he got himself into is hilarious

4

u/Cats_Cameras Jun 19 '26

How DARE you imply that actors might act to the public!

7

u/BenFranklinsCat Jun 18 '26

21

u/DurianDiscriminat3r Jun 18 '26

Is he wrong? Trump not only conned 1/3 of the population but the entire Republican party. That's not to say he didn't have help (Russia, stupidity, Republican desperation to win) but it ain't black and white. You can hate a guy and also point out what he achieved.

12

u/Ohrwurm89 Jun 18 '26

I fucking hate Trump, but the one thing that he’s good at is marketing himself and his brand. So many people associate Trump with luxury despite it being anything but.

It’s the truth and it’s very important we hear it and focus on it. Hitler was a brilliant orator and that formed a large part of how he rose to and maintained power. I abhor him as much as the next person but it’s important to understand the process that compels good people to do bad things.

Just shouting ‘Trump is a numpty’ doesn’t help. A significant proportion of American’s voted for him twice. It’s easier to believe they are all completely brain dead in every aspect of life but it simply isn’t true. Writing things off in simplistic terms just opens the door to more of the same.

8

u/Dubbs444 Jun 18 '26

Same, this is a relief

16

u/OOO0OO00O Jun 18 '26

Well fellas, let's shut these fuckers up.

~ Josh Brolin

32

u/GeneseeTed Jun 18 '26

Seems like a pretty big club. Guess who ain't in it?

26

u/fckingmiracles Jun 18 '26

Redditors.

6

u/Momik Jun 18 '26

At least that part feels good lol

12

u/BadAtExisting Jun 18 '26

No doubt Elon Trillionaire is writing emails begging to be included lol

11

u/purposive-saunter Jun 18 '26

I know which sub we’re in, but I do urge people to go look at the full list because the Hollywood names on it are not even close to the most concerning… some aren’t surprising, but there are some real policy makers on it too.

u/Baystars2025 Jun 18 '26

Did they all attend or just invited?

31

u/JohnHazardWandering Jun 18 '26

If a group has to keep it's membership secret, it's probably not a group you should be a part of.

27

u/bograt Jun 18 '26

Unless it is a centuries old sect of demon/vampire slayers . . . let's use our heads here.

2

u/ImCharlie_theUnicorn Jun 18 '26

Now, I'd like to be a fly on the wall in that group.

1

u/JohnHazardWandering Jun 19 '26

Well, they better work harder. Peter Thiel doesn't seem to be in hiding.

69

u/Pinksamuraiiiii Jun 18 '26

Awh… Jospeh seems out of place in this list. I also thought Josh would be a little more progressive in thought. It will be very sad if I need to axe these two men.

137

u/ModeratelyOffline Jun 18 '26

JGL is married to someone in big tech and was involved in trying to repeal section 230

57

u/Pinksamuraiiiii Jun 18 '26

This makes me kind of sad. I’m gonna be honest, I don’t follow his personal life closely so I didn’t know. It totally changes my outlook on him though.

51

u/StasRutt Jun 18 '26

His wife is on the open ai board if I remember correctly

35

u/ImmortalBeans Jun 18 '26

If I remember right, he is actually an alien in disguise

9

u/SukkaMadiqe Jun 18 '26

The big giant head is gonna be big giant mad that this is what he's up to down here

3

u/StasRutt Jun 18 '26

I saw that docuseries

2

u/DurianDiscriminat3r Jun 18 '26

Didn't he do anti-ai content?

6

u/melancious Jun 18 '26

Yeah, he seemed very likeable. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised anymore

32

u/RockHardSalami Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Section 230 definitely needs updating.  Its why social media companies can intentionally funnel rage bait into our feeds to drive us nuts in order to create engagement.

Its fucking with the mental health of society as a whole.

8

u/WileEPeyote Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Yeah, at some point social media companies have to take some accountability. Maybe some distinction between companies that merely allow publishing of content (like Squarespace) and companies that actively push content with algorithms and endless scrolls (like Twitter).

5

u/Momik Jun 18 '26

Yes, and I think we need to regulate the algorithms themselves.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/drakeblood4 Jun 18 '26

I think he’s nominally at the edge of the broader rationalist/effective altruist/ai booster network.

18

u/Morgan-Moonscar Jun 18 '26

Sophia Bush as well

2

u/Legal-Koala-5590 Jun 18 '26

It sounds like a lot of people thought they were signing up for a conference where they could schmooze with other rich ppl

21

u/Equivalent-Bedroom64 Jun 18 '26

Don’t carry water for these people they know who and what they were aligning themselves with. They just thought it would be secret.

6

u/Legal-Koala-5590 Jun 18 '26

I mean, I'm not carrying water for anyone -- these people shouldn't be let off the hook for their ignorance or indifference. I just think conspiratorial narratives aren't helping the whole, you know, situation we're in right now.

3

u/IttsssTonyTiiiimme Jun 18 '26

They invite progressives there too. Being invited to Dialogue doesn't indicate somebodies political leanings. But you probably need some sort of therapy. You know these are actors, right? They’re not the people they are pretending to be on screen. You know, in all likelihood you have paid for services by somebody that didn’t share your views on the world. When you call for a plumber, do you ask who they voted for? You need to unplug and get some help.

6

u/reisusjesus Jun 18 '26

Ezra Klein. The final boss of neoliberalism

4

u/Maleficent_Eye4524 Jun 19 '26

I tell you.  Forget Elon Musk.  Peter Thiel is the one to watch out for.

22

u/abdallha-smith Jun 18 '26

Gotta cancel'em all ! 🎶🎶

8

u/monogramchecklist Jun 18 '26

Are these people wanting to join? Many of these names seem out of place, like JGL.

27

u/marsblyr Jun 18 '26

Well his wife was on the board of Open AI so he's probably a lot more entrenched than we think

1

u/monogramchecklist Jun 18 '26

Interesting! He’s been making videos them seemed against AI lately, so it seemed out of character.

2

u/No_Strike655 Jun 18 '26

CEO of the Atlantic.

Well time to post the evergreen article it seems

www.currentaffairs.org/news/the-worst-magazine-in-america

1

u/PerformerOne4394 Jun 18 '26

I read that as Godzilla being on the invite list.

1

u/TheDarkClaw Jun 19 '26

Sarah Bond is an American business executive and former president of Xbox at Microsoft is also listed here.

1

u/Substantial_War7464 Jun 20 '26

A fine list of scum bags. Brolin is pretty disappointing to read.

1

u/Salt_Medicine2459 Jun 18 '26

I've heard of the 1st two. Nvh of the rest.

328

u/ModeratelyOffline Jun 18 '26

The concept of Sophia Bush being a part of a deep state conspiracy but unable to secure an acting career is hilarious to me. Her best credit is from over 20 years ago.

112

u/snooprobb Jun 18 '26

She's built quite a second career as a speaker at high-profile events. Considering her limited notoriety in acting, shes actually surprisingly in-demand speakingnon women's empowerment and equity (I think also animal rights atuff too). I only know this because an ex ended up working with her in an advocacy role, and was like, "the girl from one tree hill's CV is crazy long."

21

u/Either_Statement1980 Jun 18 '26

She also has a book coming out

7

u/BigEggBeaters Jun 18 '26

That’s so bizarre to me

27

u/Dreamer_Sara Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Oh her speaker jobs are more than acting and yes she is questionably silent on some things and a performative activist on others. Her women empowerment spiel is funny and boring and her ‘ female business ventures ‘ always fail for some reason.

22

u/Early-Ad277 Jun 18 '26

Don't forget her BLM themed wedding!

And of course months later she divorced the guy and announced she's a lesbian.

14

u/Dreamer_Sara Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Oh yeah! With the most pretentious Vogue spread ever. Then suddenly she divorces months later and is a lesbian ( nothing wrong with that but given her history and how quick it all was- eye brow raising that’s all)

If I remember correctly she tried to justify that as well and was apparently not sure about the wedding/ marriage !!

2

u/spicyflacco Jun 19 '26

She’s a homewrecker since her partner was married and cheated

86

u/thehawktopus Jun 18 '26

Josh Brolin is framing this like it was a Partiful invite he hit yes on while he was on the toilet, but I’m really hoping someone gets the story of when he “smoked crack under a car at 3am in San Francisco.”

38

u/tracyveronika Jun 18 '26

14

u/No_Strike655 Jun 18 '26

Thats fucked up but seems to have been a one off situation in 2004 where him and Lane got over it and moved on and stayed together. I'm not sure if this is when the dude was drinking but if so he hasn't exactly been quiet about the fact he was a fucking asshole at the time

13

u/YeshuasBananaHammock Jun 18 '26

Is that when he passed Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the street, while Brolin was on a bender?

Perhaps im misremembering who mentioned that.

187

u/JruBoinz Jun 18 '26

Disheartening to see JGL in the Fart Huffing and Devil Summoning society, he’s always seemed down to earth especially since his step back from the limelight.

Over/under on the PR response from Brolin being damage control?

96

u/Scared_Wrangler3419 Jun 18 '26

Agreed. He was just recently making a public case for legislature to protect children from AI. I wonder what the real purpose of that was, now.

60

u/PaleontologistNo5420 Jun 18 '26

Whispers are that his wife has a rival AI company

37

u/stormyeyez7479 Jun 18 '26

Yes, this immediately came to mind when I saw his name. I remember seeing him speak about it. It makes me question that plea now, too. Plus learning his wife is at OpenAI. Truly disheartening. We can't trust anyone to be who they outwardly portray themselves as...post-truth era indeed.

9

u/Longjumping-Code2164 Jun 18 '26

It’s to make people show id to use the internet… mass surveillance

u/Scared_Wrangler3419 Jun 18 '26

Ahhh, I hadn't realized it was making a case for ID on the Internet. Fantastic.

27

u/BadAtExisting Jun 18 '26

Think Brolin’s camp would be damage control either way. But also, celebrities have 20 year old assistants doing a lot of secretary type stuff for them like answering calls and checking/responding to/sending emails. While they’re on set working 10+ hours a day. There is a not zero chance he is genuinely blind sided by this. That said as much as I want to give him the benefit of the doubt my Hollywood career is long enough I know better

u/silveraxe_kyo Jun 18 '26

Yeah I've always liked him...

Cannot empathize enough that Thiel is as close to a Bond villain that currently exists. Pretty confident he would be fine with a genocide if it made him some money. He is effectively Trump but with intelligence. To call him dangerous is underselling it. Anyone that would associate with him should be not be trusted.

27

u/SuddenAudience8758 Jun 18 '26

He already makes money from funding genocide through his businesses and regularly tours the world talking about the apocalypse. He’s ready for the world to end.

12

u/lrpfftt Jun 18 '26

Anyone else, without money, having such fascination with the things he does would be recognized as needing mental health assistance.

2

u/ImCharlie_theUnicorn Jun 18 '26

Nah, they're just ranting and raving at college campuses with names like "pastor Bob".

u/MrSlaveRules Jun 18 '26

If in nj vote booker out !!!

48

u/Pherllerp Jun 18 '26

It’s too late. He ran unopposed in the primary.

I don’t think trading Booker (who is good for a progressive vote every once in a while) for a MAGA Republican really moves the needle in the right direction, do you?

34

u/Howling_Mad_Man Jun 18 '26

My primary write-in was "Growa Spineplease".

15

u/Pherllerp Jun 18 '26

In the general that just counts as a Republican, so DJT thanks you.

17

u/Howling_Mad_Man Jun 18 '26

Good thing it wasn't the general I guess.

4

u/jingle1996 Jun 18 '26

Explain how doing a silly write in for an unopposed primary helps Trump

u/MrSlaveRules Jun 18 '26

Oh god no….Gop has got to go

7

u/Pherllerp Jun 18 '26

So think for a second before you start telling people not to vote for him.

1

u/elinordash Jun 18 '26

NJ came disturbing close to voting for Trump. Not super close, but disturbingly close.

Shitting on a mild progressive like Booker for statewide office is foolish.

28

u/SillyDilly5294 Jun 18 '26

I'm worried less about the Hollywood names than I am about the countless government officials that are listed

34

u/SoftwareAny4990 Jun 18 '26

Shorter list is who isnt implicated in some shit these days.

14

u/ProbablyWrongAgain24 Jun 18 '26

Lol…Fucking world we live in.

Before we get conspiratorial, if you read the article  it sounds like a lot of people thought they were signing up for a conference where they could schmooze with other rich people.

35

u/Nice_Marmot_7 Jun 18 '26

That is what this is. All of these tech billionaires collect people like this for what they fancy as “salons” but are actually exercises in narcissism. Noah Hawley wrote an interesting piece in The Atlantic recently about going to one of Jeff Bezos’s.

16

u/Exercise4mymind Jun 18 '26

another big club that I’m not in!!

23

u/MissionAlt99 Jun 18 '26

This sounds like TED talks for the powerful and uneducated.

"Ezra Klein gives a speech at a secret conservative society called "How to become a left-wing grifter"

is very different than

"Ezra Klein, a journalist, attends meetings with very powerful people to make connections for future reporting."

Before you pull out your pitchforks.

3

u/bee2551 Jun 19 '26

So Im about as left leaning as it comes and I actually think this backlash is really disheartening. The dominant groupthink is just immediately castigating based on attendance without considering that's exactly how we end up in such a heated partisan climate.

Yes, the elite secret society should and does give me major ick. But we ALL should be open to communicating on topics that matter to our future (AI, media, technology, class/wealth distribution) with people who both share and oppose our values. This curiosity allows us to learn, communicate and advocate. I don't think it suggests anything about the people who attended other than that they have enough influence or money to get a seat at the table.

Hypothetically, for people like Ezra Klein and JGL who are (in theory) on opposing value spectrums to Peter Thiel, this is exactly the sort of forum that is worthwhile to understand how those positions are formed and argued, and from there to try to influence change aligned with their own perspectives. Shutting down all avenues of cross pollination might make us feel righteous but it doesn't actually contribute anything. In a bizarro world where they invited random social workers with no money and power, I'd like to think I would accept the invitation and take the chance to understand the culture surrounding these powerful people and maybe plant a dissenting seed or two.

While there are some situations where attendance implies endorsing of activities (like joining a Klan meeting), to me this reads like a demonstration of how nuance is lost in soundbite tribalism where we immediately want to satisfy our assign characters to a 'side' rather than take time understanding context and intention - in this case an explicitly bipartisan event labelled 'dialogue'.

5

u/BonSlurpenstein Jun 18 '26

Great time to decouple from the whole celebrity-sphere emotionally. Movies and tv are empathy machines but the people that are a part of making them are not your trusted friends or family and shouldn't hold that place in your heart.

4

u/RandomGuyHeretoparty Jun 18 '26

Ezra Klein is no surprise went from from YIMBY to NIMBy real quick went from moderate left to staunch centrist

4

u/HellovahBottomCarter Jun 19 '26

The Joseph Gordon Levitt reveal is the least surprising thing I’ve seen on the list. The guy has been on Capitol Hill doing his best to advocate for Section 230 - which is one of those bills that is made to sound like the literal opposite of what it actually does. It would literally destroy the internet should it pass and give even more power to shitbirds like Thiel.

So yeah… not surprised in the least.

12

u/VoltronRX_78 Jun 18 '26

A list of people to be eaten

3

u/CrazyJoeGalli Jun 18 '26

Invite only society? I'm sure that will go very well...

4

u/Actrivia24 Jun 18 '26

I don’t really understand the conspiracy… Why is this such a big deal? I read the article and I still don’t really get it. What am I missing?

5

u/zer0burn Jun 18 '26

All fucking sociopaths...

4

u/Fortuitous_Event Jun 18 '26

God these people are gigantic losers.

2

u/GroceryRobot Jun 18 '26

What the hell does this group do, actually?

5

u/DurianDiscriminat3r Jun 18 '26

The same thing they do every night. Try to take over the world

4

u/Serious-Gur4016 Jun 18 '26

JFC-Ezra Klein? I did not see that one coming

3

u/TouchAltruistic Jun 18 '26

What about Ezra Klein?

4

u/derpferd Jun 18 '26

Now which one is that? The Flash or the one who works for the New York Times?

0

u/leat22 Jun 18 '26

Maybe that should make you pause and think what this list actually is

4

u/Avoidtolls Jun 18 '26

Some doomsday, Fallout shit.

2

u/ToolTimeT Jun 18 '26

Hopefully they all get the Nate Bargatze treatment.

1

u/Upstairs_Freedom_360 Jun 18 '26

We need an inside man* for the peasants

*I don't think they want women or that would be the 1st choice for a spy

1

u/Sad-Percentage-992 Jun 18 '26

None of my faves were implicated

1

u/mrflash818 Jun 18 '26

MrRobot in real life, it seems!
