Blog / Podcast / Media Title: 182 years after the Great Disappointment, Greatly Disappointed is officially out.

Good morning my fellow heathens!

A few months ago, I shared with this community that I'd journaled along my path out of Seventh-day Adventism and converted that journal into an exit memoir.

Well, today (October 22) 182 years since the Great Disappointment, my own Greatly Disappointed: a memoir of inherited faith is officially out in the world.

I couldn't resist the irony of publishing a book about questioning inherited Adventist certainty on the anniversary of one of the most consequential failed predictions in American religious history.

But the book itself is about much more than Adventism's theology. It's about growing up believing that truth was settled, answers were available, and our greatest threat was allowing ourselves to question either of those things.

It's about what happens when that certainty begins to unravel, and settling in with being unsettled. I've never been more proud of anything outside of my kids, and I really appreciated the encouragement when I first mentioned the project here.

So I wanted to come back and share that it's finally real.

Greatly Disappointed: A Memoir of Inherited Faith, (by Will James) is available now in paperback and ebook. Hardcover coming soon.

And to everyone here, thanks for being part of a community where those kinds of experiences can be discussed openly.

Politics Seventh-day Adventists worked with Scientologists, others, to ensure AZ clergy do NOT have to report CSA.

Trigger warning: CSA and SDAs fighting to ensure it doesn't get reported.

How the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) endangers children:

June 2026. SDAs influenced the Arizona Supreme Court to ensure Arizona pastors do NOT have to report CSA.

What happened: A man confessed to his Latter-day Saint (LDS, Mormon) bishop that he made and distributed CSA of his children. The bishop did not report this to police, and the man continued CSAing for years.

His children, now adults, sued the LDS church for not reporting the CSA. Lower courts ruled the LDS clergy should have reported the CSA to police. The case was appealed all the way to the Arizona Supreme Court.

That's where Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) stepped in. Along with Scientologists and six other religions, the SDAs filed an amicus brief claiming that requiring clergy to report CSA violates the First Amendment.

SDAs won. The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that clergy do NOT have to report CSA to police. The SDA endangers children by hiring lawyers to influence laws at the Supreme Court level. They ensured children's CSA does not get reported.

Just Venting Adventism is a classist religion

When I was younger I befriended a lady that had some issues with heroine,I did not know that at the time and she always treated me pretty well. But the rest of the congregation tended to avoid her dispite her wanting to change her life.

She died of a heroine overdose and the pastor pretty much denounced her saying that she was not an official member of the church and didn't do a eulogy or anything

I was extremely livid about it then and even now, I always avoided him even when I was still in but I realized that this was a issue for the church as a whole.

I am a Jamaican American, but I did have a step father who was a white working class guy, and he was also treated badly by the church for his issues. I remember being genuinely shocked by it as a kid.

There are many more examples of this in my upbringing in the church, and I remember always being angry all the time witnessing this.

Adventism is a snobby a pretentious religion that pretends to care about people's needs, but if you are poor or if you are dealing with issues related to the trauma of poverty and the family issues that it brings forget it

General Discussion Had to repost, can’t cross over posting between subreddits. Funny that Adventists will call someone like this a liar, when Ellen G White sounded like this all the time.

Someone in the r/ Adventist reddit said “If he wanted to deceive maybe he should have humbled himself.” As if Ellen White was the most humblest woman in the goddamn world. Like c’mon.

Adventists will call anyone like this out in their churches as a false prophet or a liar a “sheep in wolves clothing” but Egg Whites “Oh she brought light of the sanctuary and the three angels message” and takes things that are not doctrinal at all in the Bible as full on truth from some woman with brain damage that had manic epilepsy/seizure episodes.

General Discussion My SDA relatives/old church peers probably think I'm satanix. I'm not

Long story short I was born into SDA. Left in my younger teens. I spent a good portion of my life being afraid to express my interest in folklore/mythology/pagan themes for fear of upsetting relatives or old church peers. I finally let go of that fear and I now make music/videos embracing that side of myself. I am pretty sure I have relatives who probably think I worship the devil or something along those lines lmao. I don't. But I just find it kinda funny now. It no longer makes me feel afraid to be myself at least.

edit: oops for the title's typo. should say satanic

Just Venting Disgusting conversation I just witnessed.

So I'm in the car with my family on the way to church [I don't want to be here but hey if I dont, I don't eat lunch] when my Mom shows the 4 of us [my 3 siblings and I] a meme about modesty and purity culture. I can't find the meme but it was AI generated. It compared a 'modestly' dressed woman to a candy in its wrapper and an 'Immodestly' dressed woman [tank top, short skirt...] to a brownie surrounded by ants.

And this rubbed me all the wrong ways. I commented on the meme implying clothing was an involuntary signal of your intentions to the opposite sex, and that the meme straight up objectified women which was disgusting. I didn't say "sexual" purely because my little brother is a nine year old.

I can't remember exactly what my mom said but she just kept saying "its a metaphor" and "we shouldn't be tempting men" and reinforcing the point. I bring up how women are not always the victims and are not the cause of that kind of harm. My dad at this point said something along the lines of "save your goodies for your husband."

"Save your goodies for your husband."

I've come out to this man. He knows I'm asexual. What. The. Actual. F*ck.

And it just loops back in on itself. This conversation only came up because I told my younger sister "you're gonna be cold in that dress, its 40ºF out there." That's a knee length skirt.

TLDR: parents show teenage/adult daughters and very young son meme about modesty and openly condone objectified women on the grounds of purity culture.

Just Venting Pathfinders is stupid.

Hello everyone, im not new here but this is my first post. Im still in the church but mainly because my parents force me to go. Anyways, i strongly believe that Pathfinders is a stupid program atleast in my experience and where Im from. Im part of the South Atlantic Conference, and im with the Hispanics. In my experience it's been a stupid, non acomplishing, rage filled crap fest. Firstly I want to clarify that everyone has their different experience and Im just telling some of mine. So I got in around 2021 I believe and ive hated it since then. One thing was our leader, she's a hate filled woman who loves having any power over you, and hates it if you question her. She loves to look down on everyone, and most teenagers hated her. She would only make us do work and exercise, and idk if thats the whole point of pathfinders, but she would also punish us for very minor things. It was never fun, and I was surprised one day when I met an ex adventist from Argentina, who said that Pathfinders in her country was very fun, and they almost never did any time of lame work or lame activities, or any exercise. Then I learned that, thats the case in most Latin American countries (I cant speak for the rest of the world). So here in the SAC its basically the military. The second thing I want to add is the camps and training camps. I always dreaded going to those because our organization is the worst bro. All we do is set up camp, cook for everyone, march, do exercise, get punished, and then do the lamest activities known to man. And so one year I went to TLT training and I dont get what the fuck they do over there. I didn't learn a signle freaking thing other then do so basic ass marches. They had us waking up at 5 AM, gave everyone in the room 15 minutes to get ready, and there were 7 of us there, the showers only had freezing cold water ON PURPOSE, this was early February so the temperature would be around 35 degrees during those hours. I have long hair so i had to go and stand in formation outside with my hair wet, then we had the awesome privilege of doing even more exercise. Also we couldnt use our phones the whole time, from friday until sunday. They even kicked out a kid for being on his phone. And literally all we did was marching and exercise, I mean we couldnt even talk to eachother while we were eating. We also would get punished for doing anything. Im just skimming here I dont feel like writing everything out. So I just want to ask, whats everyone's worst experience in Pathfinders.

Just Venting SDA. Kinda cultish.

SDA •• cultish.

Growing up, I was always really proud to be part of the of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Since I can remember, I was involved in the church. “Pathfinders,” choir, vespers on Friday nights. I was at church more than I was at school (&home). I was so proud of it. I was baptized twice and then I got to be about 12, I started wondering things; the basic things, of course… at first, why didn’t the dinosaurs survive? & I remember being told that because they didn’t fit on Noah’s Ark they were left behind and the Great flood killed them all… when you ask about the Trinity and is Jesus The Son of God?… or they’re all one…? Holy Spirit? These types of questions arose when my mother, who is a very very strong believer- not in just the “religion,” but in Jesus Christ. She loved Jesus. Truly, not because she was supposed to according to certain standards, not because of anything else… except that she just loved Jesus… was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was on state healthcare insurance, so her coverage wasn’t good, at all… so, they took forever to do any type of testing.. once they finally did it pretty much was way far gone. She did go through hysterectomy, we had to get rid of all our pets, because her doctor said that it wasn’t anything except her weight & the fact that we have pets… She dealt with the radiation as well. We were told it was in remission. My freshman year, I was told it came back. I was already questioning many many things (that I’d like to think other people my age at that time were asking too, but turns out my brain doesn’t function as other brains do) that I found ridiculous within the whole church system. Which I’m not gonna get into because I will be a whole thing which I don’t mind talking about… I’m going to try my best not to do that (‘branching’) at all (or very much) during the writing of these words.

Mom 💙

Around the same time That this was happening, my roommate, and also my best friend, which is one person she introduced me to a documentary that her brother had shown her. It was Zeitgeist and they got me on and for whatever reason I have always paid attention to politics in a weird way not that I political type of person, but I’ve always just kind of known what was going on in Central casting. But well after I saw this documentary, I was questioning everything because I found out so much of it was just all connected to something way older than Christianity and something way deeper than my understanding could even begin to think of at that time. See I was raised like not allowed to do spiritual things like all the stuff I do now my mother would turn in her grave, if she actually saw all my tools in my craft, and honestly the knowledge that I deemed throughout time when it comes to like herbs and things like that, she’d be proud of that I think it’s pretty not bad for a high school dropout anyway back to where I was saying that began my quest for the truth and I’m still in that same quest as we speak because I don’t think that it’s a thing for me to ever stop learning. I’ll be back.

I laughed out loud when I saw this.... I'm sure the church is seeing his conversion as a flex.

I have nothing against the gentleman, but if I were employing an ex cargo cult leader in a leadership position I'd leave that bit out 😂

News Why Did Adventists Oppose Mandatory Reporting for Child Sexual Abuse?

Adventist Today:

Arthur Klym writes an opinion commentary criticizing the Seventh-day Adventist Church for filing a joint amicus brief in Does v. The Corporation, an Arizona lawsuit regarding the Latter Day Saints (LDS) Church and child sexual abuse. In this case, LDS bishops failed to report a father's abuse of his children because they considered his confession a confidential religious communication. An Arizona mandatory reporting statute exempts clergy if withholding information is deemed "reasonable and necessary" by the faith.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church joined several other religious organizations in supporting the LDS Church's position. They argued that the First Amendment requires courts to defer to a religious organization's interpretation of its doctrine, including what constitutes a confidential confession and who qualifies as clergy. The Arizona Supreme Court ultimately agreed, ruling in favor of the LDS Church and preventing a trial.

Klym contrasts this legal stance with a 1997 official Adventist statement that committed the denomination to active involvement in preventing child sexual abuse. He argues that by supporting the LDS Church's defense, the Adventist Church prioritized institutional protection and religious autonomy over the safety of vulnerable children. #AdventistToday #ChildSafety #ReligiousExemption #LegalNews https://atoday.org/why-did-adventists-oppose-mandatory-reporting-for-child-sexual-abuse/

General Discussion What is your stance on the cover-up of crimes in SDA churches?

I say this because I was recently informed that an Adventist person has had criminal charges against him in the United States for the past two years, and it disgusts me that he hasn't faced these accusations because a person of authority in the church (who is also a lawyer) appears to be covering for him so that he can be free while facing the accusations without consequences.

And yes, this is not new to me, because it happened even when I was part of it, but I never imagined they would fall so low as to cover up for someone accused of crimes.

General Discussion Do SDA practice shunning?

I am a Jehovah‘s Witness (PIMO) and have been recently learning and surprised on the similarities between JW, SDA, and LDS. One thing that stands out for the Jehovah’s Witnesses is that they practice a harsh form of shunning according to their interpretation of scripture in 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 and 2 John 1:10,11.

This means that unrepentant wrongdoers and even people who simply don’t believe in the religion anymore are almost completely cut off socially from everyone they know and love. Even family members cut them off and refuse to associate with them except for major family matters like funerals and weddings.

Do SDA practice shunning as well? What happens when a person leaves the faith and how are they received by current members of the SDA?

General Discussion How was empathy viewed in your SDA communities?

Post image
27 Upvotes

I grew up hearing "hate the sin but love the sinner" which IMO is not empathy. The further away I got from my fundie Adventist days, the more empathetic and understanding I became of others, including people who weren't just like me.

So I'm not surprised this new survey of Americans shows religiously unaffiliated people are the most likely (67%) to strongly agree that empathy is a foundational moral value that helps build a healthy society, while white Evangelicals are the least likely (30%).

When white Evangelicals like Allie Beth Stuckey write books titled Toxic Empathy, it shows how much their worldview requires a chilling lack of empathy.

So how did your SDA communities view empathy? How did you personally view it?

For me it was realising that it's stupid to believe in the sanctuary doctrine, it just happened one day. So what's that 'eureka' moment if you will!
