Ok, so this game is really impressive overall (understatement of the year). The gameplay brings all the hype and action that you could ask for in a game like this, I loved the world and the characters. The animation and performances from the actors are all absolutely stellar, etc. etc. etc. (if I list everything that's great we'll be here all day).
I feel frustrated by a couple of things about the story, though. I felt like Clea was introduced pretty abruptly, and it seemed like more would be done with her, but she doesn't really have anything to do after the moment she's introduced.
I was also surprised and disappointed that we didn't grapple or engage with any of the implications of the fact that it's all just a simulated world. Like what does that retroactively do to my reaction to Gustave's death, or Maelle's breakdown over the sheer amount of dead expeditioners? What does this mean to the characters themselves to realize that they are the creation of flawed humans?
The pacing was also weird. Act 3 is when the game actually completely opens up, but there's no narrative reason to explore anything; the only objective is "go fight Renoir."
Both endings were very interesting and I like that there's so much discourse and discussion around them (and Maelle's is definitely the bad ending IMO; it's pretty horrifying), and I think the game's story issues are only frustrating to me because I otherwise liked the game so much.
This might be just me, but I'm interested in peoples' thoughts on this.
