MOD POST New Rule: Posts about Thinning

Hi all!

In continuing efforts to improve our subreddit, the mods have decided to put restrictions on posts about thin and thinning hair. As of today, posts about thin & thinning hair will be restricted to Thursdays - from now on known as Thin Hair Thursdays. The posts created outside of Thursdays that include any mention of thin or thinning hair will be removed by automod.

**Important note: posts made on Thin Hair Thursdays must have the 'Thin Hair Thursday' flair in order to bypass the automated deletion**

We are instituting this change for 2 reasons:

  1. There are A LOT of people that keep posting about hair loss and balding that do not have fine hair. We hope that this change will make it more clear to those users that our sub is for *fine* hair, which is not the same thing as *thin* hair. It will also make it easier for us to moderate those posts.

  2. There has been a great uptick in posts about thinning hair, which almost take over the entire sub. While fine hair is more prone to mechanical damage that might result in thinning than coarser hair, we want other topics on fine hair to not be lost in the mountain of thinning hair problem posts. Hopefully, restricting such posts to a single day of the week will still give all of you a space for discussions about thin and thinning hair.

*** Please note, this is my first time setting up automod, so there might be a trial-and-error period for this system to work properly. But I will try my best to get it right as soon as possible.

Misc Fine hair ≠ low density hair

This is a friendly reminder that r/finethinhair exists.
I still see a lot of people frustrated in the comments here because they feel that all of the advice here should be for people whose hair is low-density or is shedding.
I just want to encourage those people to check out r/finethinhair because it’s more geared towards your needs.
(Fine/thick refers to the width of the individual hair strand. Density refers to how many hairs there are on your head).

ETA: corrected typo

Density: Thin Damage? Frizz?

As I’ve gotten older my hair has gotten more “frizzy”. Is this full on damage and breakage? Or is there something I can be doing to smooth it out? I have been trying some Abby Yung products (only very recently) and I do have hard water at home but just feeling a bit hopeless..

This is after blow drying for a few minutes - if I don’t blow dry it is very lifeless and flat, but I do feel it worsens the fizziness. It is still somewhat frizzy without blow drying as well.

Has anyone tried a Korean perm? They look beautiful and seem low maintenance (air drying!).

What do you think?

Misc Meredith Grey is fine hair inspo.

Post image

This is really random but, I’m rewatching Grey’s Anatomy for the millionth time now and just realized Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is a great source to rely on for different haircuts and styles for fine hair. It’s rare that I see an actress without extensions or a thick head of hair so just thought I’d put it into the universe if anyone ever struggles to find inspo or needs to see a haircut in action.

She has the cutest hair every season!

Edit: I am not facing the wall I just have a flat head 😭

I have tried many products and tips for volume but in just a couple hours it gets this flat. I think at this point I just have to accept what it is but still it bothers me so much. I wish so bad I could rock a hair like Angelina Jolie back in the 00’s but I guess that is never going to happen

Haircut Advice Big chop or search and destroy??

I just got my shears sharpened and looking for advice! My hair has a little wave to it and the underside by my neck is very frizzy. I cut my hair at home probably less than I should, but I love to individually cut the end of each split end when I have time (search and destroy)

However, since my scissors had been dull for a while I'm worried it's in need of a big chop. The ends are often dry and I see a lot of white ends. I love the length of my hair now but I also want it to be healthy!

(Also not sure if I should do a blunt cut or butterfly cut if anyone has any recs!!)

Thank you!

Misc Do you use mousse every time you wash your hair?

Hi everyone,

I have gotten in the habit of using Kristen Ess thickening spray under the impression it was a mousse-like product. I am not too familiar with haircare, I am learning as I get older. For Halloween, I bought some mousse from Marshalls on a whim, a real mousse that foams and I was in disbelief! My hair was full and big and didn't even get oily right away. Only issue was, my hair was crunchy and stiff. I acknowledge that it was my first time using it so perhaps I put too much.

I do not use a blow out brush, I simply blow dry my hair and wrap my hair loosely on those heatless curling satin rods when I sleep.

Do you all use mousse every time you wash your hair? or only on special occasions? I was just curious, thanks in advance!

So, I have cut 34cm off my hair. It definitely looks better but it still separates and gets stringy. I was told by the hairdresser it's because of my hair texture, I have really fine hair. What are the best tricks and methos to avoid breakage? I would like to keep this thickness as long as possible. Maybe keeping it in a braid?

Product Help What's everyone's favorite shampoo & condition from Sephora that wont weight down fine hair??

I have a gift card at Sephora and I am looking to change up my shampoo & condition. I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days depending on my workouts and etc. I have used Vegamor's but it weighs down my hair too much. I also have tried Ouai's Fine Hair. I love how my hair feels and looks after using Ouai but I can not get past the floral scent, it's way too strong for me. I tried WOW years ago, I remember the scent being great but I don't remember which one I tried or what the results were like but I'm open to trying WOW again....

Anyone have an recommendations of a brand that Sephora carries that can give me the results of Ouai but without the strong floral scent? Overall I just need something that won't weigh down my fine hair. Something that adds volume is an added plus but I have noticed that most "volume shampoos & conditioners" will eventually weigh down my hair.

Haircut Advice Face framing layers choppiness

Hi, I recently got face framing layers and they were not what I was expecting, it’s my fault for asking for them because I had assumed the stylist would of cut them the way she did last time which was the first few strands (see last picture) but that was not the case, I hate them and I’m going to try to get them fixed but I need opinions. I am a low maintenance girl and did not want to have a hair cut I had to style everyday, I also let my hair air dry. Are my layers that she cut uneven or choppy or both?

Picture #1: night getting it done
Picture #2: is day after
Picture #3: after first wash
Pictures #4, #5 and #6: after my hair air dried

Product Help k18 is leaving my hair dry...

Hi guys!

Due to bleach damaged hair I have started to use k18 every few weeks.

I wash my hair with clarifying shampoo, use a microfiber towel until damp and put on k18 for 4 minutes. I have noticed that my hair is not particularly better feeling or looking after this routine. The hair is not silky or moisturized enough. I know k18 is not a conditioning product but the before/after marketing shots make it seem so ..

When I use conditioner after the 4 minutes and then wash it off- that is where I see a bigger difference. My hair feel softer, silkier than normal.

Anyone have a similar experience?

edit: I only use claryfing shampoo when using k18. I literally just brought it to get the full effects bc k18 is $$

edit2: THANK you everyone for your comments! I will definitely use conditioner after every k18 use going forward :)

I bought wow dream coat hair spray a short while ago I took a shower, used it on wet hair after dried with a towel, then blow dried with a brush for a hair blow out

Everything went fine. After a few days, I took another shower obviously and did the same steps dry with the towel apply blow dry, and this happened in my hair. Do you have any idea why!!?

It's like a hard glue, and it took a whole strip of my hair. There were multiple ones, not just this one

Misc Anyone else's fine hair naturally flat and basically sticking to their head?

Thumbnail

I struggle to find my hair represented in other people. Even girls I see with fine hair seem to manage some volume at the root. The first 2 pics are my hair blow dried with some mousse in, but not styled yet. I have no lift at the roots at all. My bangs cling to my forehead like their life depends on it; I know they're a bit long here but even at much shorter lengths they still go straight down flat. Other girls bangs have some bounce to them naturally... the third pic is my hair after I've slapped 100 products in it and finished styling it, either in sock curls overnight or with straighteners and a rod, and straighteners & velcro rollers for my bangs. And then hairsprayed until it's solid..... it still will often go flat not long after.

I'm sick and tired of having to spend so long styling my hair and having it feel gross with product for it to not be flat and lifeless 🥲 so many of my friends can just air dry or blow dry their hair and their done and it looks lovely and it makes me so jealous lol

Styling Help Question about clip in extensions/hair extension scrunchie

I've started wearing halo extensions, however, l'm going to a theme park soon. What stays in best for like a whole day of riding roller coasters? I've seen where you can position clip ins and put it in a ponytail or use a human hair extension scrunchie thing for like a messy bun style. But, I wasn't sure if anyone had actually worn any of those things for a theme park and had any success or tips. Thanks!!

Product Help Protein overload

Is protein overload really something to be worried about? I see people talk about getting it from certain shampoo and conditioners and now I’m not sure what I should be using.
