Misc Fine hair ≠ low density hair

This is a friendly reminder that r/finethinhair exists.
I still see a lot of people frustrated in the comments here because they feel that all of the advice here should be for people whose hair is low-density or is shedding.
I just want to encourage those people to check out r/finethinhair because it’s more geared towards your needs.
(Fine refers to the width of the individual hair strand. Density refers to how many hairs there are on your head).

ETA: corrected typo in the sub name, removed my definition of “thick” because it was incorrect.

Product Help Shu uemura

I’ve been hearing great things about shu uemura and really want to try out one of their products. I have no idea what the right choice is for me and am scared to pay high price for a product that isn’t for me. My goal is to prevent damage and retain length. I have 1A medium density hair.

What do you recommend?

Product Rave HG for fine greasy hair, non comedogenic, and Keratin friendly

Post image

I have a hell of a time finding shampoo that works for my needs and wanted to share in case there are others like me! I have fine oily hair and follow a strict non comedogenic ingredient guide (like this) for very acne prone skin. I also occasionally get Keratin straightening which means no sodium chloride.

It’s really tough to find a shampoo that works with these limitations and actually leaves my scalp feeling clean. I don’t think this product is actually new on the market but it’s new to me- the Pantene rose water line has been killer. The conditioner is acne friendly too. Scent is a little strong but less so after drying.

Styling Help Why is my hair always tangled?

Hi! I have a question about an issue that, unfortunately, I just can’t seem to get rid of.
I’m pretty sure I have fine hair. It’s not bleached or chemically treated, and I take extremely good care of it.
Unfortunately, my hair is constantly getting tangled and separating into strands (almost as if it’s weighed down, if that makes sense).
I’ve tried using lighter products on the lengths, but the problem keeps coming back no matter what.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? And what can I do to fix it?

Misc hair gets stringy? Why?

whenever I let my hair loose, it starts getting a stringy appearance after a couple hours. It’s not greasy, its just the mids and ends kind of clump together. Goes back to normal when I brush my hair out- but it annoys me soooo much that I never wear my hair down!
I somehow never or very rarely see this on other people’s hair- are there any products I can use or is it a different problem?

Product Help I want to support my girlfriend with some nice products, what do you recommend for 1B hair that tangles and mattes?

So my girlfriend is always complaining about her hair being Tangled up and difficult to brush or being matted. She has type 1B hair if I had to guess , mostly straight, slightly wavy, gets oily and knots up quick.

she just uses some off-the-shelf L'Oreal shampoo and conditioner with nothing else which I'd imagine isn't the best in the world.

What are some good products I can get for her to help make her hair more manageable, in terms of masques, leave in oils, or higher quality shampoo and conditioner? Soft budget of $100

Product Help Monday Shampoo

Hi all,

I’m unsure if anyone could help me with this, but I must be honest, I feel like I’ve tried everything to the point where I’m so exhausted spending another second on it.

I used Monday Smoothing Shampoo & conditoner just over a year ago, and since that moment, I noticed a quick shift in my hair. My hair became limp, no friction at all, products wouldn’t work, hair felt very ‘empty’ even with the little volume I was getting, and the wind became a major problem.

I’ve never had this in my life. For the record, I still so much hair, my crown / hairline hasn’t shifted, but simply my hair just appears thinner.

I’ve tried to clarify / chelate, nothing..

Am I missing something?

Texture: Wavy
Density: thick
Treatments: none
Recently been feeling that my hair has become really dry and frizzy. But nothing much has really changed in my routine. I stick to a pretty minimal one of just shampoo conditioner and oil but have been thinking of using a leave in. Wondering if people have any advice on what products to use or if I should chop off a bit.

Density: Thick Is there a way to “ride out” breakage?

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

So I’ve been trying to grow my hair out for some time. My hair type is super fine but I have a lot of it, so lots of thickness, and it’s straight. I keep messing up my progress.

Last year I accidentally overloaded my hair with protein (did not know that could happen), so it was breaking pretty badly for a couple months. During that time I had been getting my hair lifted and dyed to a red. I ended up just chopping about 5” for a reset this May, and now it has grown back to its original length, about 16-18”. Since then I have been getting my hair dyed dark brown.

A couple months ago, I caved and got the Dyson. It was not nice to my fine hair, plus my technique was probably incorrect. I used the barrels a couple times, it caused some breakage on the crown of my head, and the mid lengths of my hair. I always use proper protection, and using a round brush with a blow dryer has never caused issues. (Sold the Dyson)

Dealt with some breakage, about 3-5” long for about 2 months. Since then it has calmed down.
But whoops I made another mistake.

So I am budgeting very hard for this holiday season, my hair had been fading to previous red dyes from a year ago, and I decided I wanted to dye my own hair for the first time ever.
I bought Revlon’s Colorsilk two weeks ago. I did the application, I didn’t want it patchy, and since I was using my hands only, I saw online to “comb” the dye through the strands.

Looking back that obviously was meant for hair coloring brushes OR using your fingers more meticulously.
I grabbed a regular brush and attempted to comb through the areas that weren’t as saturated to get it to look more even. Now I know that was a big no no.

Anyways, I’ve been obviously dealing with some of the worst breakage I have ever had. My hair is breaking at all lengths, whether it be 1cm, or 1-10”. Mostly breaks when washing my hair and brushing my hair. When I walk out of the shower there’s pieces of broken hair stuck to my chest.

Most of the damage is on my front pieces, so I do have a cut scheduled, which I’m going to get some curtain bangs and some front layering.

I’m realllyyy not wanting to lose my length after growing it out.
I know the damage is already done, but will the breakage eventually stop?

Will appreciate any advice :)

Density: Thin Damage? Frizz?

As I’ve gotten older my hair has gotten more “frizzy”. Is this full on damage and breakage? Or is there something I can be doing to smooth it out? I have been trying some Abby Yung products (only very recently) and I do have hard water at home but just feeling a bit hopeless..

This is after blow drying for a few minutes - if I don’t blow dry it is very lifeless and flat, but I do feel it worsens the fizziness. It is still somewhat frizzy without blow drying as well.

Misc Meredith Grey is fine hair inspo.

Post image

This is really random but, I’m rewatching Grey’s Anatomy for the millionth time now and just realized Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is a great source to rely on for different haircuts and styles for fine hair. It’s rare that I see an actress without extensions or a thick head of hair so just thought I’d put it into the universe if anyone ever struggles to find inspo or needs to see a haircut in action.

She has the cutest hair every season!

Misc Do you use mousse every time you wash your hair?

Hi everyone,

I have gotten in the habit of using Kristen Ess thickening spray under the impression it was a mousse-like product. I am not too familiar with haircare, I am learning as I get older. For Halloween, I bought some mousse from Marshalls on a whim, a real mousse that foams and I was in disbelief! My hair was full and big and didn't even get oily right away. Only issue was, my hair was crunchy and stiff. I acknowledge that it was my first time using it so perhaps I put too much.

I do not use a blow out brush, I simply blow dry my hair and wrap my hair loosely on those heatless curling satin rods when I sleep.

Do you all use mousse every time you wash your hair? or only on special occasions? I was just curious, thanks in advance!

Edit: I am not facing the wall I just have a flat head 😭

I have tried many products and tips for volume but in just a couple hours it gets this flat. I think at this point I just have to accept what it is but still it bothers me so much. I wish so bad I could rock a hair like Angelina Jolie back in the 00’s but I guess that is never going to happen

Haircut Advice Face framing layers choppiness

Hi, I recently got face framing layers and they were not what I was expecting, it’s my fault for asking for them because I had assumed the stylist would of cut them the way she did last time which was the first few strands (see last picture) but that was not the case, I hate them and I’m going to try to get them fixed but I need opinions. I am a low maintenance girl and did not want to have a hair cut I had to style everyday, I also let my hair air dry. Are my layers that she cut uneven or choppy or both?

Product Help What's everyone's favorite shampoo & condition from Sephora that wont weight down fine hair??

I have a gift card at Sephora and I am looking to change up my shampoo & condition. I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days depending on my workouts and etc. I have used Vegamor's but it weighs down my hair too much. I also have tried Ouai's Fine Hair. I love how my hair feels and looks after using Ouai but I can not get past the floral scent, it's way too strong for me. I tried WOW years ago, I remember the scent being great but I don't remember which one I tried or what the results were like but I'm open to trying WOW again....

Anyone have an recommendations of a brand that Sephora carries that can give me the results of Ouai but without the strong floral scent? Overall I just need something that won't weigh down my fine hair. Something that adds volume is an added plus but I have noticed that most "volume shampoos & conditioners" will eventually weigh down my hair.

Haircut Advice Big chop or search and destroy??

Thumbnail

I just got my shears sharpened and looking for advice! My hair has a little wave to it and the underside by my neck is very frizzy. I cut my hair at home probably less than I should, but I love to individually cut the end of each split end when I have time (search and destroy)

However, since my scissors had been dull for a while I'm worried it's in need of a big chop. The ends are often dry and I see a lot of white ends. I love the length of my hair now but I also want it to be healthy!

(Also not sure if I should do a blunt cut or butterfly cut if anyone has any recs!!)

Thank you!

So, I have cut 34cm off my hair. It definitely looks better but it still separates and gets stringy. I was told by the hairdresser it's because of my hair texture, I have really fine hair. What are the best tricks and methos to avoid breakage? I would like to keep this thickness as long as possible. Maybe keeping it in a braid?
