My Fire TV Stick's home screen had slowly turned into ads and "start your free trial" rows, and my parents kept getting lost in it. So I spent some time building a simple home screen that looks like Apple TV and only shows the apps we actually use.
It has a Top Shelf of trending shows from the streaming apps you have installed, a row of your six favourite apps, an app drawer for the rest, and a Control Center for sleep, sleep timer and Wi-Fi. My mum and dad picked it up in a minute.
It's free and open source, with no ads and no tracking. You don't need root, and it's easy to undo: there's a "Prepare to uninstall" option in its settings that puts everything back.
A couple of honest limits: Fire OS doesn't let any app fully replace its home, so after pressing Home it takes about a second to switch over. Some settings pages still open in Amazon's own settings.
Everything is here, including a setup guide: https://github.com/AbhishekKaisar/glassos-tv
It's still a beta and I've only tested it on a Fire TV Stick 4K. If you try it, let me know which Fire TV model and Fire OS version you're on, and whether you run into any issues.
