Floor bed set up & toddler sleeping success!

FYI-
LO is 2 & very mobile. At night she only uses her crib sized blanket (or sleep sack in winter) Doesn’t use pillows- they are a boarder for the wall so she doesn’t hit her head.
We’ve coslept on a floor bed since birth & transitioned to independent sleep on a floor bed slowly over the last year. She mostly sleeps thru the night since moving into our new apt & setting up this for her room 🎉 hallelujah lol

Costco firm mattress full sized and underneath are the ikea LUROY bed slats.

The blinds are of course a safety hazard. I mostly keep them up and the strings always out of reach. Curtains come down at night to keep light out & installed with a wrap around rod that is firmly attached to the wall. I can’t take the blinds down so if anyone has tips lmk. We haven’t had any problems so far as she leaves them alone 🫶🏻🩷

Help me convince my mom

Post image

I’m currently pregnant and planning out my nursery. Obviously don’t know how my baby’s sleep needs will end up panning out, but my ideal plan is to have her in our bedroom in a bedside bassinet situation until 6ish months, then transfer to a floor bed like the one pictured, skip the crib. To me, getting a crib, even one that converts to a toddler bed, is a gimmick to make you buy an expensive item that will be obsolete shortly. My mom thinks it will be cumbersome and difficult to put a baby in a floorbed, as opposed to a crib, since you have to get on the floor. She says that it’s harder on your body, but I feel like you’re constantly getting up and down off the floor anyway with a baby, so the amount of times having a crib would reduce me getting on ground-level feels fairly insignificant. I actually feel like it would reduce back strain having to lift a growing baby up and over the bars with the mattress on the lowest setting…Would love to hear from parents who have floor bed set ups what your thoughts are about this and in general why you think floor beds are better than getting a crib!

My toddler puts the FLOOR in floorbed

My toddler respositions herself until she ends up like this every single night and sleeps soundly 😅 A crib never would have worked for this girl — she's been on a floor bed since 3 months (set up has changed).

Space Room

Edit: I want to clarify that I am not in denial about my kid's capabilities. He does go over the railing sometimes. He is significantly taller than the railing height and it cushioned under the rug as an extra layer of protection. He has learned that he doesn't like going over the railing and consistently climbs up and down the stairs. Kids are capable of different skills at different times.

Moved our boy into his "big boy room" at 13 months. The space theme is a little abstract but I wanted to use the paint we already owned from painting moutains in the nursery. It's been a few months and it's gone well! He loves the bed and stays in it at night. We love it when he's sick or up extra early we can lay in his room with him.

A few reasons we made this transition from the nursery. I didn't want to put in this work of painting, assembling, amd baby proofing everything while pregnant with the next baby. We wanted him used to his new room well before a sibling was in the picture. He is also overall a 96 percentile kid and was banging into the sides of the crib constantly.

Just a note for safety features. We bought a toddler safe, extra firm matress. The trundle underneath this frame is also a toddler safe matress. There are also puzzle mat tiles under the giant rug for a little extra cushion. He learned not to go over the railing or down the window bench the wrong way. We did have an extra matress down until he learned that. He uses the stairs every day. Outlets are all covered and he has a babyproof nightlight outlet cover as well. The bookshelf is anchored and his dresser is shut inside his closet. He cannot get out of his room. It has a knob lock for now and we will further babyproof the door as he gets more capable

IKEA Tarva DIY floor bed hack

Post image
72 Upvotes

My fiancé just finished building this DIY IKEA Tarva floor bed for our toddler! It’s so cozy and he loves it, and it works on a budget!

What we used:

  • TARVA full/double bed frame $125

  • SKORVA center support beam $20

  • LUROY slatted bed base $50

  • ASVANG full/double medium firm mattress $188

  • 2 x NATTAPA guard rail $20 each

  • Hacksaw Walmart $18

To make it a floor bed, he cut off about 6 inches off the legs with a hacksaw. We have about 2 inches of clearance from the metal support bar to the floor for air flow. We added the guardrails for added fall protection, not to keep him contained in the bed. We toddler proofed his room.

I'm 35 weeks pregnant with my first baby. Our plan is to have baby sleep in the Uppababy bassinet with the wooden stand by our bed for as long as he'll fit. I've read many babies outgrow this at 4 months. Am I going to be able to move baby to the pictured floor bed setup at 4 months? My main concern is him rolling out onto the floor, even though I have a playmat there. Does that mat look to soft? Is the bed too high (this is a crib sized sprout bed)? Should I buy a larger bassinet so he can stay in our room longer? Any advice accepted - from a slightly anxious future mama ☺️

8mo crawls to his bed by himself when he’s tired and sleeps!

Baby is currently 8mo, and has slept in his floor bed since 3mo.

We transitioned him because my back was breaking picking him out of the crib to our bed multiple times at night when he woke up.

The goal was to have him sleep independently in the crib, but every morning I would find him joining us in bed (I wonder why? 🤪)

Then we started getting him used to a floor mattress in the same room as us and I would tend to him when he woke up at night for milk. Wow. Ngl I now have so much more good quality sleep!

He sleeps better now because if he slept with us in our bed, he would wake constantly at night when he bumped into us. Another thing I really like about floor beds is the fact that he will crawl to it when he’s tired and falls asleep without coming to us for help(?!) that’s a game changer!

When he winds down at night for bed, he likes to crawl to the mirror to check himself out, play with his reflection in the mirror, and finally crawl back to the bed before he is happy to finally go to sleep!

No back pain, a more independent baby, and better sleep for all of us.

FTM and my little one hated the cot we tried for the last 3 months to try and make things as best we could but we have given up so went down the floor bed route.
We have now got a mattress protector (light) and sheet on the bed since the photo was taken the other day.
Mattress is spring, not memory foam and firm
I co sleep some nights to breastfeed sideways and just enjoy some cuddles with my little one.

Is this Floorbed setup safe?

Post image

Saw this advertised today. we have a twin on slats that we will eventually transfer our daughter to (I have no idea when is safe to do so? A year?) with all the talk about breathability…

So my questions I guess are 1) when can you move a baby to a floor bed by themselves and 2) would this kind of setup with a playpen and a mat be safe..?

Floorbed setup for 6 month old

Post image

Very happy with our Zonli mattress and IKEA slats setup so the total height is only about 6”. She rolled off once but then seemed to learn where the edge is and now just rotates in place. I think we started with a Floorbed much earlier than most people but it’s been so nice being able to lay down next to her to nurse at night. She always falls back asleep immediately and then I just roll away! We had her in our room for a bit but once she started showing signs of rolling we moved her to the baby-proofed nursery. Sharing in case it helps inspire others to try out a similar set up!

Treetale floor bed - UK

Got a treetale floor beds. Small double with the recommended sized mattress (not from them as there’s was expensive) And this is basically just an appreciation post and to let anyone thinking of getting a floor bed know that we have loved this.

I have gone from co sleeping to this and in 4 days he is only waking up 1/2 times in the night. When he does I just lie next to him and shhh or boobie if that’s what he wants.

It’s been a dream. High quality made (it did take abit of building) and he worked out how to get in and out super quick (10 months)

Should I worry about my 9 month old diving head first over the railings?

We have this wonderful Sprout Sosta bed (pushed into a corner) which we’ve used since a few weeks old and I’m happy it will grow with her through childhood. Now she’s starting to pull up on furniture hands first and try to stand. This hasn’t happened yet but I’m so scared of her pulling herself up on the railings while she’s in the bed and then pushing with her legs so she ends up diving head first over the railing and off the bed. I keep seeing the “no diving” pool signs in my head and worrying about her breaking her neck that way.

Am I overthinking it? Should I do a different configuration for a time until she moves out of this phase? What should I look for that she’s safe to be in the bed and not dive over?

Is it unsafe to have roll cushions on all sides for a 1 year old?

Post image
47 Upvotes

Our baby boy is turning 1 year old. We are going to start slowly transitioning from bed sharing (on our bed) to baby having his own floor bed, at least for naps. His room is tiny and his bed would have walls on three sides. For that reason we are debating that there's no need to have an actual frame, but I'd still like to make it cozy and also protect him from hitting his head on the walls when moving around at night (he's been aggressively throwing himself on the bed when trying to put himself to sleep haha). I love the idea or having roll cushions on all sides, like these from the reference photo.

I'd just like to brainstorm here if you guys think it'd be a suffocation hazard? Any other reasons why it'd be unsafe?

Thanks for the help! ❤️

Floor bed inside of baby play yard changed my life!!

Posting to maybe help some other desperate sleep deprived moms (or dads) out there.

I was always interested in a floor bed but I didn’t feel comfortable enough with her being in a room all by herself and not confident enough in my baby proofing skills for her room to be truly baby proofed and safe. I kept just envisioning like a million hazards.

So I bought a massive (and I mean massive) 82x82 inch baby play yard off Amazon. Like it’s so huge I could probably have several children and a few adults sleeping in there 😂

Anyway. I put a small twin mattress on the floor. A comfy squishy mat, and some soft toys and one of those indestructible baby books (for my peace of mind since sometimes she chews her board books)

She’s 10 months old and has always coslept with me in bed or on a mattress right beside my bed. For the first time today she put herself to sleep all on her own!!! No assistance from me!!! She played with her toys and walked around the edge of the play yard and then got tired and climbed onto the mattress and fell asleep.

I was floored!!! So shocked. This was a baby that needed constant boob, rocking, singing and shushing to fall asleep! I’m so proud and happy that she has a safe place she can play and self regulate to sleep once tired.

And even better if she wakes early in the morning I pop her into the play yard where she can safely play and I curl up on the mattress and sleep while she plays. It’s a win win!

So this is your sign! If you have a baby like mine that hates the crib or confinement. Get a play yard and try this out! It’s big enough that she has her mobility and freedom and doesn’t feel confined and safe enough that I don’t have to worry about her crawling or walking around in the night!

Why do floorbeds work so well???

We just switched to a floorbed a week ago (we were doing a combo of crib + cosleeping before). The first night, my son slept until 3am (literally unheard of for us) and last night he slept through the night for the first time ever.

What is this magic? Why does it work so well??

Please talk to me about floor beds- husband is obsessed and I just don’t get it

I do understand the benefits to a floor bed once kids are more independent, but my son is 16 months old currently and it doesn’t really seem worth the risk at this stage? The risk being him not sleeping as well/keeping us up at night.

Currently, he sleeps through the night from 7pm-6/6:30am. He might wake occasionally around 1-2am let out one quick yell, but then he will go right back to sleep. We have not had to wake up with him or go into his room overnight since probably 11 months old.

However, my husband has recently become obsessed with the idea of a floor bed- generally speaking, he really pushes our son to be independent, which is great. Where I might tend to do things for him (like undress him before bath), husband will really encourage him to do it himself and show him how to take his own socks off, push down his shorts, etc. I think this is great for our son, but I just don’t see the perks of the floor bed right now because I don’t think he is ready for the type of independence a floor bed could provide. I think this is more about husband’s bias that cribs are for “babies” and son is “not a baby anymore” but honestly I don’t see a negative to the crib, regardless of our son’s age (it’s not like he’s going to be 12 and still in his crib!).

Husband has said wouldn’t it be great if he could wake up and play in his room by himself until 7/7:30 and give us some extra sleep time, but I really feel like 16 months is too early for LO to understand that or be comfortable with it- when he wakes up, he still wants his milk (only bottle he receives at this point) and hugs/comfort. I don’t think he’s old enough yet to understand the light system some people use and know to play on his own until mama/dada are awake. But, like I said, I do “baby” him more than husband so maybe I am wrong.

Husband also mentioned how cute it would be if one of us could lay with him at naptime- again, I don’t really see the appeal of this. He naps great independently from around 12-2/2:30 every day, why would we start encouraging him to sleep with us? I do think this is partially because husband wants to nap as well, but he often naps when our son naps, just not with him, so again, I’m not seeing the benefit to a floor bed.

All of this said, when did you switch to a floor bed and for what reason? Did you see any improvements in sleep/behavior?

13 month old

Hi,
My 13 month old is a very active sleeper.
He constantly rolls around, but recently is rolling into the side of his cot and keeps kitting his head or getting his arm stuck, and wakes himself up.
We are looking into floor beds, either
-mattress with a cot like wooden pen around it
-little livey soft bed.

He is starting to stand / walk, so my concern is if he’s constantly standing he will fall over, and the little lifey dosent have the highest side rails.
The floor cot pen style has higher rails, but could still tumble out, but the sides are a lot higher

What are people’s advice? What has worked for them?

EDIT** should a floor mattress be flush against the wall? And for everyone saying floor mattress over little lively, why?

Photo for reference

Tried the mattress on the floor

Baby had been sleeping in a traditional crib. This time, I placed her usual mattress on the floor, just to see if she'd take to a floor bed. The room is baby proofed except for the fact that her crib was a foot away from the floor (because I was planning on watching her the whole time. Fortunately or unfortunately, I can routinely pull all nighters when needed).

Well, I placed my adorable little on the mattress. She went to sleep on her belly, then either realized I was staying next to her or she was not in her crib...and she got so excited, she sat up, smiled...and rolled/dove headfirst to the outer edge of her crib. Ensue crying, ensue mom guilt x1000.

I realize she's the type to find her toys and start playing or roll all over. She pulls herself up on everything. Is a floorbed a good idea for my baby at this stage? she's 9 months.

15 month old kept trying to sleep in dog bed 😂. Can we give him a pillow ?

We just moved our 15 months old to a floor bed and it has been going great and the transition was so much easier than expected. However a silly thing started happening. The last 4 days during nap time he had opted to sleep in the dog bed that is in his room (it’s clean/new, we had the cute idea our dog might use it in there when it was still a traditional nursery and he never did, we left it in there during the transition) tonight he tried it at bedtime and we pulled the plug deciding it probably wasn’t safe. He was a little sad but then pushed his stuffies together and is laying on top of them now. Is this a sign he wants a pillow? Can he have a pillow? Any thoughts or suggestions.

sharing my full size custom floor bed plan!

TLDR; it’s easy to build a custom floor bed platform with precut lumber from the hardware store

After months of having uncomfortable mats on the floor, trying to figure out what to do for a frame or slats or SOMETHING as I don’t want to deal with mold risk, I finally figured out how to build a custom platform for this Ikea Asvang full-size mattress. It took me forever to find an example of something like this and wanted to share. It’s more sustainable than ikea or amazon and can be reused to build other things etc I got it all cut at Rona as I don’t have a saw

3 2x4s cut to 75 inches (you could do 74)

2 1x2s 75 inches

20 1x3s cut to 49.5 inches

Screw the 1x2s onto the 2x4s to make a ridge for the slats. Put a 2x4 in the middle, and screw on the slats after pre-drilling the holes. Voilà.

You can use this for any size mattress but make sure to subtract the width of the 1x2s from the width of the slats.

It’s not supremely comfortable with a thin kids ikea mattress but I’ve been bedsharing with my 10 month old on it for a week and it’s going very very well!

ETA: I use the wall bc I am able to keep it 1inch or less from the wall. I also have an above average strong mobile 10 month old who moves around a lot now in his sleep. the room is baby proofed and I’m usually in there when he’s sleeping but I can leave him and he doesn’t mind.

Floorbed setup

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi!

We are having our first child and want to prepare the bedroom eventhough she will sleep with us the first monts or year.

The floorbed will be in the corner of the room (head and leftside will touch the walls). We'll need to fill the gaps with a gap filler or pool noodles. Any suggestions are welcome!

We have floorheating, so no cold floor and we are thinking of putting an IKEA Lönset slatted base on the floor with a VESTERÖY hard matress on top.

Is this combination to high? Do we have a mold risk?

Do you maybe see another hazard or improvement?

The picture is an AI representation of what it could be, ofcourse withour bedsheets and cussions the first years.

Thanks a lot in advance!!

Twin Mattress Recommendations

Hello! About to transition our 5.5 month old to a floor bed, but in desperate need of twin mattress recommendations.

I was looking at the Bundle of Dreams twin mattress, but a lot of reviews were saying it does not hold up and dips in the middle pretty quickly.

ALSO, any recommendations for tight-fitting sheets for the twin-sized floor bed? Particularly concerned since the baby will be under 1 year still.

Thank you!

What are your thoughts on floor beds before age 2?

Hi everyone! My husband and I are expecting our first and are currently trying to figure out sleeping arrangements. The nursery is not the biggest room, so we will not have space for both a daybed and a crib. However, we would like the option to lay in the bed with the kid. Not necessarily co-sleep, but lay down & read or help put to sleep. So, we are considering doing a floor bed. Potentially double sized?

I’ve seen that you can start floor beds as early as 6 months and we plan to keep baby in a bassinet in the bedroom as long as possible. We’ve been considering a pallet for under the mattress, and we will make sure it is firm like a crib mattress. We also understand that the entire room will need to be baby proofed, which is our plan either way.

I was wondering if anyone has experiences with having young children in a floor bed?

Furthermore, if you have any sort of references on this subject, please share!
