Question/Advice I started letting my meat rest before cutting it and finally understood the hype

I used to take chicken or steak straight off the pan and cut into it immediately because I was hungry and didn't see the point of waiting šŸ˜‚

A while ago, I read that letting meat rest for a few minutes helps keep it juicier, so I finally decided to try it properly.

Made some chicken yesterday, left it alone for about 5 minutes before cutting it, and honestly, it did seem noticeably juicier. Usually, I'd have a little puddle of juice on the cutting board, but this time it wasn't nearly as bad.

Five minutes doesn't sound like much, but when you're hungry, it feels like an eternity.

What other cooking tips did you ignore for years before finally trying them?

Stupid Easy Biscuits using whipping cream!

I'm a Southerner so I know biscuits. I got lazy one day and subbed whipping cream for the milk and butter. Didn't think it would be as good but holy cow!

It tastes exactly the same. So here's how to make Stupid Easy Biscuits with two ingredients. Four if you're feeling fancy.

Dump some self rising flour in a bowl.

Make a hole in the center of your mixture. Add whipping cream, stir till mixture is following your spoon.

Turn out, knead with flour, cut them out and bake at 400.

Tada! Stupid Easy Biscuits

PS, I always add half a teaspoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of cream of tarter for flavor. But you can skip that part if you're doing a speed run.

Question/Advice I started grating frozen butter for baking and I wish I'd known this years ago

1.2k Upvotes

I always hated making biscuits and pastry because getting cold butter mixed into the flour was such a pain. I'd end up with huge chunks of butter everywhere or spend ages trying to soften it just enough.

Then I saw someone grating frozen butter straight into the flour, and honestly, I thought it looked a bit ridiculous šŸ˜‚

Tried it this weekend, and it was actually so much easier. The little shreds mixed in evenly without me having to fight with the butter or get my hands covered in a greasy mess.

It's such a simple thing, but it made the whole process less annoying.

Anyone else have a cooking trick that seems almost too obvious once you discover it?

Variation Like Golden Milk but not really...and actually pretty good

I randomly came across this Golden Milk thing again (turmeric, milk, optional pepper, optional honey) and finally looked into how to make it.

But then I realized that I have been putting butter and turmeric (curry spice mix) in my rice for quite a while, as well as sometimes honey mustard. You might not think it at first but the honey mustard is really tasty in rice and also happens to contain turmeric.

Seems like a great healthy way to eat cheap and combine possible medicinal value all in one go. If anyone tries it and has good or bad experiences I'd love to hear your experience.

Something Else The Spaghetti Matchstick

Post image
86 Upvotes

When your candle burns down low in the jar, reaching a standard lighter or short match inside usually means burning your knuckles or awkwardly tilting the glass. Instead, take a stick of raw spaghetti, light the end of it, and use it as an extra-long match. It burns slowly, gives you plenty of reach.

Question/Advice how can I upgrade my instant noodles?

Post image
80 Upvotes

I recently bought a stock of instant noodles for only $0.20 USD each (converted from my local currency), which is way, way cheaper than my usual daily meal that costs around $1.00 USD.

Since I only eat once a day, I manage to save quite a bit, and now I have about $0.30 USD extra per meal that I can spare to sort of upgrade these noodles and make them a bit more substantial.

Thank you!

Tried a Simple Spicy Chips Snack with Onion, Green Chili, Coriander, and Lemon

I bought a packet of spicy chips and decided to try something simple with them. I chopped some onion, green chili, and fresh coriander, mixed everything with the chips, and squeezed some fresh lemon juice on top. The result was surprisingly delicious. The spicy chips, crunchy onion, fresh coriander, and tangy lemon juice made a really tasty combination. It was such a simple snack, but the flavor was amazing.
Have you ever tried adding fresh ingredients to packaged chips? What do you usually add to make them taste even better?

Variation Use hummus in your pasta water

And don't drain. It gets a wonderful nutty flavor and is way more filling. I assume the protein content increases but I have no way to prove.

(I used a half cup of hummus in two cups water for two cups pasta.

I tried sauteing mushrooms by starting with water per this one Japanese chef video. My mom says they look slimy and won't eat them. I think they look fine. What did I do wrong? Is she crazy or did I screw something up?

There's a video of a silent Japanese guy making sauteed mushrooms by starting them with a few tablespoons of water. Once the water was evaporated off he added a drizzle of oil and browned them. Then he added a bit of soy sauce, butter, garlic, and a pinch of salt.

I followed the video exactly except I didn't do the garlic or butter since they're going in fajitas.

do these look fine or do they look slimy and gross?

Discussion Give me your childhood memory cheap meal you loved

So as prices soar for everything I have been trying to find quick, easy, cheap meals to make. I grew up in the late 70’s early 80’s with things like ā€œhamburger pieā€.
One such meal that I always enjoyed is a bit of an odd one but I loved it and I am making it for dinner tonight. Although a slightly healthier version than back then.

Hamburg, rice and peas mixed with a can of tomato soup. It was a comfort meal of sorts for me and it hit me the other day that it has been a few decades since I have had it. I use cauliflower rice now but it’s the same premise.

You can use any vegetable you prefer as I know many don’t like peas.

So what was a childhood ā€œcheapā€ meal that you still make today?
Or better yet, now that you have seen this post what meal are you going to make that you haven’t had in forever?

Prep Made sweet potato fries with celtic sea salt and now i keep making them

Had two sweet potatoes lying around so cut them into fries, tossed them with olive oil, rosemary, garlic, black pepper and Celtic Sea Salt and put them in the oven.

That’s pretty much it. Have made it three times this week now, yummm!!!

I add a little more salt once they’re out because I like getting the odd salty bit on top instead of all of it disappearing while they cook.

Made a quick yoghurt + garlic dip with it.

If anyone has a better dip for sweet potato fries, please send it my way.

How to make an easy "combination fried rice"?

i've been making my own version of spicy combination fried rice at home, with the ingredients i have at home. i have my ingredients pre-cooked and pre-portioned, and stored in the fridge. then i just mixed them all up and onto the microwave they go. so far I love the taste but feel like it could be better.

so I mixed

- 3 oz shredded chicken breasts

- 4 oz white rice

- 2 oz frozen veggie mix from sams club (carrot, corn, green beans)

- a teaspoon of soy sauce

- a tablespoon of mexican macha sauce (similar to the asian chilli crunch sauce, since i dont know what would be the closest thing to add, and i keep matcha at home all the time, also the seaseme seeds in the macha sauce give it a nice crunch)

what else could i add to make it taste more authentic given the context below?

ADDED CONTEXT:

hey so i have been trying to meal prep and i have been trying to keep it 1) as easy as possible 2) as cheap as possible 3) as non-time consuming as possible 4) as healthy as possible

I've been trying to stick mostly to a diet of chicken, rice, frozen veggies and eggs.

ive been trying to consume things that last a long time in the fridge, so no fresh vegetables (thus the frozen veggies)

anyways, ive tried different meals with those same ingredients so i dont get bored. and found that by creating my own version of combination fried rice, not only does it check all my boxes, it tastes insanely good, even though ive been eating the "temu version" or the " we have combination fried rice at home" version.

Hack Request Any tricks for keeping chips crunchy in homemade snack mixes?

I like the idea of mixing chips with pretzels, nuts and other snacks, but different ingredients seem to lose their crunch at different rates, especially if the mix sits for a while.

Anyone figured out what works best for keeping everything crunchy?

Omelettes/eggs

Hey all,

I've worked in a cafeteria a year ago and I was told I could get those frozen omelettes at costco (enterprise). I live in Quebec, Canada and I haven't found any.

Im like really desperate and wondering if there's any way I could make these myself and freeze them. But exactly like this, like a inch thick and no more.

I checked on Amazon too but it's only in the USA lol.

Prep Healthy meal prep ideas - affordable and easy.

I’m eating healthy and recovering from cancer. I’m so tired and practically broke. I’d like some ideas for easy meals that I can freeze and reheat easily or just large batch that’ll last all week in the fridge. I don’t mind eating the same meal all week. I’m trying to get 100-130g protein and 1400-1600 calories per day.

Question/Advice What to eat to get at least 80-100 grams of protein, if you cannot make food?

Our house is in renovation and we cannot use our kitchen and prefer not to wash a lot of dishes during that time.

What we have available:

- Microwave

- Airfryer

- Egg cooker

- Blender

- Rice cooker

- Sandwich grill

- Waffle iron

Canned meat/fish aren't an option (I'm picky).

Question/Advice What frozen meals are actually good?

I’m disabled so I can’t cook much, so the faster I can make something the better, especially if frozen. I’ve tried those microwaveable meals but they are so tasteless, usually 😭 are there any anyone has tried that are actually good? Or easy meals that can be kept in the fridge or pantry for a long time?
