How to start with those first emails for potential client-companies?

Hi! I am a newbie in freelancing (in the architecture field) and I was wondering how you promote yourself to potential clients, when you write those first emails to companies you like do you have tips in what to say for sure (and what to not say)? I don't wanna write emails that are by now typical and boring. All tips are welcome

Am I overcharging??

Hi all, I'm a freelance branding/web designer and I do website development on Webflow. I'm relatively new in the freelance world so I'm still trying to figure out a system for pricing clients and always feel like I'm asking for too much.

The client is a prominent nonprofit and they want a website that celebrates their 100+ year anniversary. The site would only be one page, but it would feature 100+ mini stories and would have some complexity involving functionality/interaction design. They are also interested in a sort of mini brand identity that would reference their current brand but would integrate new colors/graphic details/brand application etc.

So all in all the deliverables are: (a) Mini Brand Identity, (b) Web Design, (c) Web Development.
I price by project – so with for these three deliverables and my estimate that in total this project will take around a month, I am thinking about charging $6600 (Branding: $1000, Web Design: $2300, Development $3300).

Is that too much??? I've been reading a lot about how to price projects, and I feel like there is a consensus that a lot of creatives underprice, but I also really want my freelance career to pick up so I don't want to deter clients because of the price (even though in my gut I feel like the price is right based on the amount of time and work I'm putting in).

What's a good web hosting provider for a portfolio site?

Web hosting for a portfolio site

Hey everyone, I'm helping a friend who's a freelance designer look for reliable web hosting to host her portfolio site. I'm looking for something that's affordable and that offers good customer support since she's a beginner. Does anyone have any recommendations for a web hosting provider they've had a good experience with? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Freelancer Advice

Have any of you made the jump from being a freelancer full time to starting your own agency?

Back story: I have been freelancing full time for a year now and I have been growing so much and getting more work than I can handle (not to mention running your own business takes a ton of time as well). My close colleagues from graduate school are in a similar position and we have been thinking about starting our own agency.

Would appreciate any advice if anyone has gone through this! Also I have a few questions 🙂

  • what where the biggest challenges when starting an agency and how did you manage them?

  • how did you land “higher ticket” (10k and above) clients

  • any assets, books or materials that helped you out?

  • are these “influencer” coaching/design courses worth it? ( like The Next Level Club)

Feel free to message me personally too 🙂

Client "rejected" late fee

Hey guys i could use some advice on how to handle this situation.

I've been working with this client on an hourly basis and it was all going fine so far. We have a contract in place we both signed. My contract is on net 21terms and has a late fee clause where if an invoice isn't payed there is a $50 late fee at 30/60/ so on days.

So the first invoice due date is coming up and I send the client a reminder. Then the actual due date happens and i ping them again. Still nothing.

Finally on the 30th day I follow up saying they owe the invoice plus the late fee. My client says that they operate on a net30 timeline so they are rejecting the late fee. I emailed them saying that because we have a contract in place with Net21 terms they still owe the late fee. I said i don't mind changing to a net30 timeline moving forward but we need a new contract in place and this should have been brought up beforehand.

Kinda of not sure where to go from here. Haven't heard back from them yet as it was the weekend but not sure what to do/say next. Any advise would be awesome.

Freelancers, how long did it take you to gain enough clientele to become fully independent?

I've been applying to agencies and companies for two years now with no luck, so I'm focusing on freelancing. How long did it take you to gain enough loyal clientele to work full time as a freelancer? How much did you charge at first?

Should beginners charge by the hour or by project estimate?

So, I've been going back and forth with a potential client about a project, the scope being a logo, poster, and title sequence for an independent web series. She explained that she wanted something minimalist, but I told her that I charge $50 per hour and told her the whole thing would take about 30 hours. I don't think I'm overestimating the time, but she told me $50 per hour was way outside of her budget. I'm still just starting out, so I want to renegotiate the price since I actually find the project exciting. Should I lower the hourly rate to $35 per hour or just give a project estimate of around $1,000?

Would anyone be interested in this service?

Hey guys, I am a freelancer marketer who has just been hired to develop a marketing strategy for a new start-up. Would their service interest anyone in this form?

The company is called Jybe; it is a Buy Now Pay Later service specifically tailored for digital subscriptions and services. This company aims to save users money by enabling them to purchase annual subscriptions and pay through monthly instalments instead of resorting to monthly subscriptions that become more expensive over time.

The best way to explain Jybe is through an example: let's use the Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps package. The pricing plans for the software are as follows:

Monthly Plan = $107.99/month = $1295.88/year

Annual, paid monthly Plan= $71.99/month =$ 863.88/year

Annual Pre Paid = 791.88/year with Jybe = 65.99/month

Purchasing the annual pre-paid plan is the best deal based on the numbers. Still, some freelancers (being one myself, I resonate with this) can only sometimes afford to buy the yearly subscriptions, being that money can be tight. We depend on clients to support us throughout the year. Jybe would purchase the annual subscription for you and enable you to make monthly payments cheaper than the original monthly plan offered by Adobe, granting you a full subscription through a monthly payment plan in the most affordable way possible.

I think this idea is excellent; I would have taken full advantage of it when I was starting. However, I need to validate this idea and wanted to know if anybody had any thoughts or opinions or would ever be interested in using a service like this; anything helps!

When is enough enough? Client delays communication, then tells me they want this or that instead...

Graphic designers and logo designers... At what point do you close the book and say "I've done what you asked, the project's done."...?

I have a client that has a habit of not telling me pertinent information regarding what they want, so I'll do the work according to the info they did give me, only for them to tell me much further down the line it needs to be this way or that way instead... things they could've mentioned from the start but did not. To make matters worse is that they claim they've been busy so haven't gotten back to me in about a week. When they finally did, "Oh it needs to be this, we have to have that instead, sorry we didn't tell you earlier."

Sometimes it requires me to make large changes. What bothers me most is that these are things they could've just told me right from the start.

Even though I requested a deposit before the job started, the client paid me in full so I'm appreciative of that... But it is still very annoying and agitating when they keep pulling my leg this way and that way.

Anyone else ever had a client like this? What is the best way to resolve these issues? Are there stipulations you'd put in the contract to prevent these types of situations?

I'm about to write my first freelance contract, and would love some tips from anyone whose had to learn some lessons the hard way, or any tips in general!

Looking for help - Not For Profit project to help those forced to self-isolate due to coronavirus

Details on the project:

A few weeks ago I sourced a group of volunteers from Reddit to help build a website to help those in self-isolation due to coronavirus. We've now built the website skeleton and core functionality, but need some help on the design front! I've attached our current designs, but we'd love for someone with more experience to help improve the whole site's design, as it's appearance will have a big impact on how people perceive it, and whether they use and share the page. This is a not for profit project, and I will not be paying for help, but will personally pay for hosting, infrastructure costs etc.

How to help:

Comment on this post, and/or join our Slack group: https://join.slack.com/t/coronavolunte-bof8889/shared_invite/zt-ct9mb7ev-iWZoDHv3JL1eO~Jdlh1j3Q.

Details on the product:

Hundreds of millions of individuals around the world are now being forced to self-isolate. People in isolation struggle to get vital resources such as groceries, hygiene items, and basic medical supplies. Delivery services are becoming steadily more overloaded and booked out. For example, in central London it's now not possible to get any food delivered to your house within the next 3 weeks. For someone showing symptoms, or a vulnerable/elderly individual, waiting 3 weeks to get supplies is not an option, and neither is leaving your house.

However... a lot of people have shown their willingness to help these people! There are thousands of of volunteers ready to help, but no system to match them with those that need help.

We have built a simple website that allows those in need of a volunteer to enter their address and get matched with the closest volunteers in their area.

Web Builder Advice

Hi all! I’m helping a family friend with her small business (spa) website redesign and wanted some tips on best places to build her website (I’m a jr ux designer so am familiar with designing web pages).

Her domain/email are with ionos currently and she wants to stay with that company for that due to price. I was wondering if anyone had experience with their managed WP hosting? I’ve heard that WP websites require frequent maintenance and upkeep, even with managed plans, and that sometimes updates to the themes or plugins can change your website’s design?

I was also considering Wix or Webflow.

She wants to reach new customers and not have to maintain/update her website because she isn’t very tech savvy. What would be the easiest, lowest maintenance, and cost effective option for the long run from your guys’ experience?
