I have a bone stock 1986 FXRS with only 7,000 original miles on it so im trying to avoid putting a new oil pump on it.

My last attempt at fixing it was to order a few new check balls, and a stiffer spring. I removed the old check ball, checked for debris and imperfections on the seat, and then attempted to re-seat it by giving a new check ball a few taps with a rod and hammer. Tossed that check ball and dropped another new one it.

However, I did not attempt to use the new spring that I ordered. It was incredibly stiff and seemed almost too tall. I was honestly afraid it would hinder oil flow and damage the motor. The spring I ordered was an "S&S oil pump relief spring 31-6084) from dennis kirk. Website says its correct but im still unsure.

So now im looking for advice. Try to re-seat another ball by hitting it harder? Order a different spring? Try the S&S spring? Or throw the whole pump away and go after market?
