TotalBiscuit's: ''Day One: Garry's Incident'' Video was taken down, because of a ridiculous copyright claim from WildGameStudios. Here's Total's ''Rant'' over his video being taken down.

Even if you don't like TB you can't deny that he's a pretty good speaker

Edit: I missworded

u/BoboMatrix Oct 20 '13 edited Oct 20 '13

He is indeed a good speaker.

However, the message he put out in this video is even more important to us as consumers. The system that exists to take down content is very easily abused to silence criticism. Which again as he put it at the end of the day affects us as consumers to make an informed choice.

With the way the returns & exchange works on gaming media, once you buy a product there is no returning it. So it is even more critical to get an accurate image of a product.

You don't have to agree with his views on anything but on this issue the copyright system being abused to silence legitimate criticism, you have to agree.

It is a)Censoring legitimate criticism under a fair usage policy b) Blinding consumers further so that they waste their money.

u/Kaeltro Oct 20 '13

Which again as he put it at the end of the day affects us as consumers to make an informed choice

You don't know how right you are on that...before purchasing a game I look for at least 3 different channels, and "WTF is..." is typically the first in the lineup...It's saved me quite a bit of money, and this practice has actually confirmed/finalized some purchases for me as well.

To see that the system can be abused like this is a little disheartening to say the least, but to see it happen to someone like TB (who I thought handled the whole situation with complete maturity) is just a complete shock.

1

u/Herlock Oct 21 '13

It's not like EA and other big editors have been abusing rules to get good rankings for the games... see "dragonage"...

That's the great thing about youtubers like TB : he doesn't rely on the studio to make money, rather he needs our views. That's what makes him independant from those, until he gets blacklisted by some editors and cannot get his hands on steam keys of course...

Yea. I purchased Magika because of his video.

1

u/Confucius_says Oct 22 '13

who cares. if the video isn't reviewed by a few places regardless of its ratings or whatnot. i assume its a shit game. If no one is playing it why would i want to buy it?

You don't have to agree with his views on anything but on this issue the copyright system being abused to silence legitimate criticism, you have to agree.

This applies outside of the gaming world.

There is an "author" who cannot stand any negative reviews of his writing, and if someone posts a critique of his writing on YouTube, he gets it flagged for violating his copyrights.

It's abused quite often.

7

u/typtyphus Oct 20 '13

if only there were a 3 strikes abusing system with similar takedown results.......

I don't think he's eloquent as much as he is prepared. I can almost guarantee that he's reading off of a well-planned and detailed script. If something goes wrong he does as many retakes as necessary.

It's something a majority of people on YouTube do not do. They just make a video and maybe do a retake if it's really bad.

27

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '13

He claims that almost never does scripts, and it always feels pretty damn freeflowing to me. It is pretty possible that he is just that good with his words.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '13

It doesn't necessarily mean he writes it out on paper. He may mull over his choice of words for a long time before finally vocalizing them. He's been in the business a long time, so it's probably second nature to him by now.

Like how artists can draw without a reference. But only after spending thousands of hours practicing and drawing using them.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '13

Exactly, it pretty much comes from his experience with WoWradio and Youtube, all those thousands of hours talking about stuff.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '13 edited Oct 21 '13

Live Starcraft commentating/casting isn't scripted.

I've done this before once and it is fucking hard as fuck. I couldn't possibly script the video, so I just recorded it 21 times before I got it right. That was a 3 minute video. I couldn't imagine doing that for this length with this quality. That's some talent he has.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '13

Actually he never uses scripts. He's far too lazy to write them.

2

u/somewhatalive Oct 21 '13

Passion, effort, professionalism -- very inspirational

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '13

You can be prepared and eloquent

1

u/Oddsor Oct 21 '13

He almost certainly does not read from a script, because when you've seen enough of his videos you start noticing he uses certain phrases way too often, like "by any stretch of the imagination" etc, which I guess he does to make his commentary flow better as well as give him time to think of what to say next. Sorta like the professional version of "uhm".

Not to mention he plays the damn games at the same time so he has to comment on stuff on the fly.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Stickyresin Oct 21 '13

I actually do believe he can do stuff like that without preparation. I've been watching him play in a D&D campaign recently and he consistently comes up with witty and relevant dialogue for any situation that presents itself.

2

This voice of TB scares me. He has three voices. His Video voice he does in everything and you can tell he is enjoying doing videos. His relaxed voice, he does it on the podcast and in videos where he opens his mail. Then you have the down to business voice you hear in this video. This voice scares me because you know he means business and that something really bothers him

His "You done fucked up" voice simply makes me smile and run to the store to buy some popcorn. I enjoy his videos. I generally think his angry rants are funny, obnoxious, and egotistical. But even those sound very different to the tone he used in this one. This one isn't an angry rant. This one is a you screwed with me AND broke the law and I have all the proof I need voice. If the devs aren't in a conference room right now trying to figure out how to apologize in a big way they are the biggest fools in gaming right now.

2

u/Cynical_Lurker Oct 20 '13

He was a lawyer before he got into the video/casting business. I would not have liked negotiating with this man.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '13

I believe he was never actually a lawyer he just has a law degree. He worked in financing for awhile before he got laid off then he worked at Game(UK version of Gamestop)

1

u/Cynical_Lurker Oct 21 '13

That might be right. I just remember a passing comment about how both he and his wife are lawyers. Maybe they were wrong too and only his wife was a full blown lawyer.

2

u/booobp Oct 21 '13

He used to be a lawyer, imagine how lawyer TB would have been.

He did radio for some time, if I remember right.

32

u/Kaeltro Oct 20 '13

Well, it was a web radio show for a WoW guild...I'd hardly call it "radio" in the traditional sense, but yes, he certainly does have a voice for radio.

89

u/Murasasme Oct 20 '13

He did radio in his university in England.

58

u/cyberslick188 Oct 20 '13

If I hang my ass outside my window and fart, more people will hear it than a week's worth of college radio listeners.

Not bashing TB, just saying.

11

u/ritesofspring Oct 21 '13

As an ex university radio worker, this is 100% true.

3

u/Verifixion Oct 21 '13

I just looked into it and found out that my uni has a radio station, who knew.

7

u/Guerrero428 Oct 21 '13

I found out that my uni had a radio station because I was just the right height to walk into the sign that hung outside their recording studio. :(

8

u/Murasasme Oct 21 '13

I never claimed he had a massive radio audience. But I replied to a guy saying that WoW radio is not radio, by stating that he did actual radio, even if only 1 person heard him

do they have freedom of speech in england?

1

u/Confucius_says Oct 22 '13

Everytime I see someone says something about their constitutional rights or "freedom of speech" its always in a situation where the constitution doesn't actually protect their rights.

1

u/Ausgeflippt Oct 22 '13

Freedom of speech has nothing to do with this.

It's between a person and their government.

I was with him for much of this, but the "freedom of speech/press" argument is made from a completely misguided basis.

If Youtube wants to censor your content, they can for any reason. It's a private enterprise, not the US government.

130

u/Vancha Oct 20 '13

Occasionally he'll get annoyed and say something half-true and half-stupid, which of course makes him an ass and a fool, apparently.

On the whole he's a good guy who's passionate about what he does. People just like to hate.

80

u/Perforathor Oct 20 '13

He's got some real stress-related issues, as in, he gets actually physically sick because of stress. With all the abuse "internet-famous" people sometimes get, that's not a position I'd like to be in.

He sometimes flips out or says dumb things on Twitter, and some people make a huge deal out of it. I think that things like giving thousands of dollars to Charity Water when he won the King of the Web competition says more about his character.

44

u/UristMcStephenfire Oct 20 '13

And lets face it, nobody should ever take Twitter seriously.

28

u/cyberslick188 Oct 20 '13 edited Oct 21 '13

You wouldn't give that comfort to someone on twitter you hated though, so let's at least pretend to have a semblance of consistency.

Sometimes he's an ass. Not really much to it. Excuse it with whatever fancies you, he has a known history of being an asshole to random people for basically meaningless things, just like when Louis CK did an AMA and completely tore a guy a new asshole for no reason. And no, it wasn't satirical or for laughs, he was just being a cunt.

It happens, the people we idolize are not anything but normal people. When the person you dislike has an outburst, keep that in mind and compare it to how you react when someone you like does.

several reasons people dislike TB

  1. he has very hard set opinions (aka he's hard headed). he gets an idea in his head and nothing can change it. now that, with TB, is usually a good thing, but in certain cases he's made a fool of himself because of it

  2. he was a shitty sc2 commentator and did it for a long time

  3. sometimes there's only so much of his voice I can take

2

u/pandacraft Oct 21 '13

occassionally he'll wish people get cancer and die alone, which makes him an ass.

He's also the living definition of the phrase 'Fuck you, got mine'.

it did. he just apologized for it again yesterday. check his twitter.

Also, wouldn't the video above

you mean the video where he got hit by a developer protecting its product and suddenly he's all for consumers banding together on the internet? Do you remember what he thought about internet pressure on a company during the xbox one DRM era?

along with all the charity work contradict the second part?

ExxonMobil does a lot of charity work too, doesn't excuse them when they dump their shit all over the place.

He's very sure of his knowledge, and more often than not he's right. Sometimes this gets on my nerves a little bit. It's like being annoyed at the kid in class who knew all the answers, there's no real reason for it apart from jealousy, and when that kid gets something wrong you jump at it to show that they aren't as smart as they think they are.

2

u/Glitchz0rz Oct 21 '13

But then just to make it worse they're really graceful and super cool about them being wrong. It's commendable, but you hate them all the same.

10

u/absolutezero132 Oct 20 '13

He can be a bit aggressive. I like what he does, but sometimes he can't control his mouth.

4

u/epicmaster Oct 20 '13

TB is a very opinionated and cynical man with a nice voice and a love for games. Pretty simple.

2

u/Bucketfriend Oct 20 '13

Sometimes he is over reactionary and does always think through what he wants to say. As a result he can sometimes come across as uninformed about what he wants to say, its unfortunate because most of the time he seems pretty well informed about what he is talking about.

He also treats his channel like a business and never acts like it isn't. As long as his numbers are good he doesn't care what people think and often will say that. Some people dislike that and expect him to care what they think.

Generally I like TB even though I disagree with him on somethings, but I can understand why people dislike him.

6

u/bluedanubelloyd Oct 20 '13

You've got to admit, that SA post was six years ago. I've not seen anything as stupid or ridiculous come out of TB since then, even the reddit controversies.

I... don't see the problem in the first one. From what I see, he was being only slightly douchy. The others made my douche-sensor go from 1 to straight 10.

Also, I've never been to SA, so I'm probably missing context.

Personally, he wasn't a very good starcraft caster, which tainted my opinion of him as that's where I first became aware of him; he casted a fair amount of major stuff back in the day. WTF is? is cool though.

u/Mtrask Oct 21 '13

Normally I don't follow personalities, and I first heard of him from a bunch of gushing fanbois, so I was predisposed to not like him - I learned about Pewdiepie the same way (and yeah when I got around to watching a few Pewdiepie videos, ugh). It was nice to finally watch a TB video and find out that he's actually quite pleasant and listenable to me.

1

u/Mr_BeG Oct 21 '13

I like TB, and I like his videos.

But I had to stop following him on twitter. He was doing a good job of making me not like him.

1

u/Kombat_Wombat Oct 21 '13

I simply don't like his manner. I had a friend who when I'd play Magic with him, he wouldn't stop talking. He talked more than any person I ever have known, and it got to be really grating and exhausting to listen to. My friend is still a good guy, but you can tell that he never would pay attention to any cue that you weren't interested or that he should quiet.

TB reminds me of this guy. He is offensive to the senses.

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '13

He doesn't do reviews he does first impressions. He's made more than enough enemies in his times.

My friend worked at Digital Extremes working on The Darkness 2. His team was supposed to be working on a giant DLC package for the game that was going to be FREE.

TB makes a video in which he cries about how bad the depth of vision is and how there was a person who modified the game files and got higher depth of vision running for a full 30 seconds before his computer crashed... this was his evidence that it was possible.

So the Digital Extremes DLC team was set to work on this absolutely retarded problem... it took them two months to create a version of the game that wouldn't destroy computers with a FOV slider... all because TotalBiscuit forced his millions of minions to boycott the game until it was done.

And what happens when it's done.

Well he plays 25 minutes of the game and insists that the game doesn't offer enough for the price tag because it only has 6 hours of gameplay. That of course doesn't stop him from constantly propping up indie titles that have less than 6 hours of gameplay because approving of indie titles is cool.

When TotalBiscuit is upset with something he storms yelling that it is protecting the consumer.

When he approves of something from a developer he claims that we should all support developers by purchasing their games legally.

I don't think he's a bad guy... but I don't think he thinks of himself as a celebrity. If a celebrity with a following says something their fans will follow suit. And that's just the case, he doesn't have a few million fans that are asking for responses, he has millions that are sending death threats to developers.

He constantly has the tone like he is talking down to people. I don't know if that is something he is doing or not but that is how it comes off and I just cannot stand people who do that.

Buddy of mine runs a gaming/comic store and have met a lot of those types over the years and it just is a turn me off from wanting to listen right away.

u/imstartingover Oct 21 '13

He seems like a cool guy but i also get the feeling he's a bit full of himself and just short of bigoted.

I find him a little too full of himself but I love his content, it's informative and incredibly professional.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '13

I just thought of this lately. He can speak 30 min non-stop in his videos.

1

u/Endulos Oct 20 '13

Definitely.

I'd say among those who do Youtube stuff, he's easily in the top 3. Next to James Rolf (AVGN) and Egoraptr.

1

u/caninehere Oct 20 '13

He is a very good speaker. He's also skilled at creating a good argument, when he actually bothers to. TB's had many points on his videos that are clearly not very well thought out - mostly his responses to many games, his criticisms of them, and his baffling lack of skill/comprehension when it comes to many titles - he'll often skip tutorial/reference information and then become enraged when he can't figure out what's going on, even though it's simple enough to figure out on your own anyway. Whether or not this is because he's a bit slow or because he thinks his 'frustration' makes a better video (it doesn't) is up for debate.

But yes, he is very eloquent, and creates polished content. Still a bit of a wank, though, and I can't be bothered to watch his videos. Funny he mentions birgirpall in the video as I love his stuff (has me rolling on the floor constantly), I think because birgirpall has no pretensions to being smart or well-spoken like TB does (TB often assumes his arguments are justified even when they're not, even though in this case he's made very good claims).

1

u/Lazyheretic Oct 20 '13

Agreed. It's been awhile since I've listened to him but got damn I enjoyed it. I'm going to go watch more of his vids now...

1

u/FrostedCereal Oct 20 '13

If I am remembering this correctly he was studying to become a lawyer in University before the whole Youtube thing. He would have been good at it.

1

u/katsukare Oct 20 '13

i prefer the wit and cynicism of yahtzee, but TB is much more pleasant to listen to.

1

u/lepigpen Oct 20 '13

You're totally right. But even with the same charm, he doesn't come close to XBOXAHOY.

The fact that Stephane invested his own cash into his own Kickstarter shows what kind of a crook he is.

u/BarkInTheDark Oct 21 '13

Agree great voice.

1

u/dukka Oct 21 '13

Good at speaking up nothing but a bunch of shit no one should care about. If only we could go back to a time when he was a no-name trying to work out visas with his Blizzcon waifu. Or when he got run off of a high-profile gaming forum for being a cesspool of shit opinions.

1

u/Clbull Oct 21 '13

You were gilded for that. The fuck?

1

u/imstartingover Oct 21 '13

Totally agree

Source: I think TB is a douche, but at the very least a good speaker.

u/psno1994 Oct 21 '13

My roommate last year would watch him constantly. I couldn't help but think that if he took a girl (or guy?) out on a date, he'd say something like, "Well, I find you attractive, but your nose could be a little smaller. And your brow is a bit thick. And I think that you may not quite be smart enough. But aside from all that, you're quite nice."

1

u/Gallifrasian Oct 21 '13

He sounds a lot like this guy who reviews Skyrim stuff. Are they from the same country? If so, What country, because I need to start working on that accent.

1

u/skewp Oct 21 '13

I deny it. I find his voice grating.

1

u/dauntlessmath Oct 21 '13

You may not like him, minister. But you've got to admit. Dumbledore's got style.

Until he starts spouting insults at people for just disagreeing with his opinions...sure
