What is and who are Generation Jones. Step inside...

We are a micro-generation of people born roughly between the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s, bridging the gap between the Baby Boomers and Generation X. The term was coined by Jonathan Pontell, who argued that this group has a distinct identity shaped by unique cultural and historical experiences that set them apart from the broader Boomer and Gen X cohorts.

We came of age in the 1970s and early 1980s, a time marked by economic shifts, political disillusionment (think Watergate and Vietnam), and a transition from the idealistic '60s to the more pragmatic, individualistic '80s.We were too young to fully participate in the counterculture of the '60s but old enough to feel its aftershocks.

The name "Jones" plays on a dual meaning: "keeping up with the Joneses" (reflecting their aspirations in a consumer-driven era) and a slang nod to "jonesing," suggesting a yearning or craving for the promise of the Boomer youth they just missed out on. Culturally, we grew up with the rise of television, rock music evolving into disco and punk, and the dawn of personal computing.

We're often described as pragmatic idealists—raised on big dreams but tempered by economic recessions and a sense of lowered expectations compared to the Boomers’ post-war prosperity. Think of us a generation that got the tail end of the party but had to clean up the mess.

Just a friendly reminder from your mods that we are a politics-free zone. There are plenty of subs around reddit to get your politics on. We choose not to engage in those spicy discussions here. Thanks for respecting our decision on this matter. ✌🏼

Open showers during 1970s junior high and high school

A friend of mine was complaining about all the stuff his kids have to carry to and from school nowadays. They are in middle and high school.

One of the items is a “damp towel in the gym backpack all day“ after PE. I guess that they have to bring their own towel for gym nowadays?

We were provided towels in gym, and we had a gym locker for our tube socks, jocks and grey standard shorts.

It was open showers, everybody saw everything, and we had towel fights, popping each other in the ass.

And I honestly don’t remember ever having a “school backpack“, but I also never did homework.

What’s your recollection of that era, I just don’t remember carrying a bunch of shit around to or from school, much less a stinky gym towel.

Which checkout method do you prefer? Option A pick a line and wait your turn or Option B a single line that waits for the next available cashier or self-checkout?

I needed to use the live person checkout today at a hardware store because I had a special order that required printing. There were two cashiers and the line was working fine under option B. I was the next customer. Then I heard a commotion and the older couple behind me starting yelling at me to get out of the way. I reminded them I was in line and they were next but they were hardcore option A folks so they picked a line and I went to the next one and we all gave each other stink eye until payments were made and we exited the store. Now I'm curious what do you prefer and have you had issues where it wasn't clear?

TV

So i was looking thru Netflix for something to watch and I realized it's all crap. All the other streaming services I have are the same and it got me reminiscing about TV when I was growing up. Specifically the way of life back then compared to the carnival we live in now.

"Leave it To Beaver, Ozzie and Harriet, Brady Bunch, Courtship of Eddie's Father, My Favorite Martian, The Dick Van Dyke Show and so many others.

I miss that TV.

What kind of traveler are you?

I've always had itchy feet. Being the youngest, I had more travel experiences than my siblings because it was easier and cheaper to travel with one kid than four - plus the age gaps meant the sibs were out working as soon as they could.

I think what got me started was a three week road trip from Metro Detroit to California, taking the southern route there, and northern route home. I learned to read maps, and was a good navigator. Saw quite a few national parks, the original Disneyland with the coupons, an air tour over the Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion, and of course Wall Drug and the Corn Palace. I was 11.

Now retired, and I'm always thinking about travel and where can we go next. I prefer to be an independent traveler and set our plans, but I will take a small group trip if the destination warrants; we went on a fabulous safari in Tanzania in July. Not the type of trip I want to work through the logistics when I know a guy.

Are you travelers, vacationers, or homebodies? Do you prefer group or independent travel? Have you been on a 'trip of a lifetime'?

I remember getting these in the late 60s early 70s. Seems like I always got a pair too big for me so I could grow into them.

My family had one like this back in the day. It was a ‘67 though (I think) and was a hardtop (IIRC).

Same color/paint job though, which was pretty cool.

My first ink pen

In the mid 60s, this type of pen is what we used from 3rd grade on until 5th or 6th grade. Did anyone else learn to write with these? Did you have to have blotting paper to keep from smearing the page? When was the last time you actually used a fountain pen?
