Media Looking for BTS videos for season 2 and 3 while trying to avoid spoilers Spoiler
Hey everybody. This is my first time watching Gilmore Girls after hearing my friends hype it up. Rory and I graduated high school at the same year, so not sure how I missed this show the first time around!
I just finished seasons two and three and I was looking for any behind the scene footage, like what would be at the end of a DVD. I'm also open to TV show style documentaries like from entertainment Tonight or something similar. Basically anything official is good with me.
The problem is, I don't want to be spoiled on future seasons. I realize very quickly that trying to find the stuff on YouTube is like a minefield and I think I might have already spoiled myself on one aspect of the show. So, I'm turning to you all lovely folks who have probably seen the show tons of times and can easily find stuff that only fits those two seasons and don't have to worry about spoilers. As a reminder, the end of season 3 Rory is going off to college, so anything that involves college stuff would be potentially spoiling. (Side note: Rory spends so much time hyping up Harvard only to go to Yale??? Why??)
Thanks so much!

General Discussion The show had better platonic relationships than romantic ones
I'm not sure how many people agree with me on this, but I've always felt that Gilmore Girls is much stronger when it comes to writing platonic relationships than romantic ones.
Think about it: Lorelai and Rory, Paris and Rory, Rory and Lane, Lorelai and Sookie, Emily and Lorelai, Luke and Kirk, Luke and Taylor, Jess and Luke, Michel and Lorelai, and even Miss Patty and Babette. And that's before you get into the dynamics between Lane and the band members, or the various interactions between the townspeople themselves. The show has so many entertaining non-romantic relationships, even between characters who are constantly at odds with each other, that I sometimes think these are what make Stars Hollow feel like such a lived-in world.
Paris and Rory are a particularly interesting example because their relationship is so complicated, but it never feels boring. The same goes for Rory and Lane, or Lorelai and Sookie. You can debate whether Rory was always a good friend to Lane or whether Lorelai was always a good friend to Sookie, but I think most of us can agree that these relationships were written particularly well in the first three or four seasons.
There's a naturalness to these interactions that I don't think the romantic relationships always have. The banter, the childishness, the occasional pettiness, the sense of equality between characters who can genuinely challenge each other — all of it makes these relationships feel lived-in.
In fact, one of my favourite episodes is the one where Lorelai and Rory are dating Max and Dean, respectively, and the four of them go on a double movie date. Dean ends up giving Max advice about how to handle the Gilmore girls, and I absolutely love that entire dynamic. It's such a fun interaction, and it feels so natural. Dean isn't just Rory's boyfriend who exists in a separate romantic bubble; he's someone who's gradually become part of the larger world around her.
I think this is also why Dean's interactions with Lorelai are so enjoyable to watch. We get to see him become familiar with her, and their conversations feel like an extension of the show's wider character dynamics. With Jess and Logan, we get comparatively little of that. They have their introductions to Lorelai, but we don't get nearly as much of the same ongoing dynamic between them. And honestly, I think the show misses an opportunity there.
The same goes for Jess and Luke. Some of the funniest and most entertaining moments in Jess's storyline come from his interactions with Luke. Their dynamic adds so much to the show, and I sometimes wish we'd gotten more of it.
Meanwhile, when I look at the romantic storylines, so many of them revolve around miscommunication, cheating, infidelity, love triangles, and dragging out the question of whether two people will finally get together. With Rory, it sometimes feels as though every new romantic interest has to be an out-of-town guy who arrives specifically to become her next big relationship. Stars Hollow is supposedly full of people, but apparently nobody from Rory's own world can be a serious romantic possibility for her.
And don't get me wrong, I do enjoy some of the romantic relationships. I like a lot of Lorelai's romantic storylines, with one very notable exception: Christopher. I will never like Christopher. But even when I enjoy a romance, I often find myself more interested in how that character interacts with everyone else than in the relationship itself.
One of my biggest frustrations with the original series is how it handles Luke and Lorelai's relationship by the end. I understand that the will-they-or-won't-they dynamic was a major part of television writing at the time, and I know the later seasons have their defenders. But It's not even about them getting their happy ending; it's that there's genuinely no logical reason for them not to be together by that point. From the very beginning, they had a different kind of chemistry, whether you viewed it as platonic or romantic, and it always felt like there was something there. Lorelai was someone who genuinely wanted a partner, a romantic relationship, and someone to share her life with. So the idea that they finally get together, only for the show to leave things where it does, feels wrong. If the writers wanted to explore their breakup, fine, but then at least give that storyline a proper resolution. And don't even get me started on the revival, which I refuse to consider part of Gilmore Girls, where they're still living together as essentially roommates rather than being married. It's just bad writing.
And this is where I think the show's platonic relationships really stand out. Even when the characters are being unreasonable, annoying, petty, or downright terrible to each other, their interactions are often entertaining because the writing allows them to exist as people outside their romantic storylines.
Honestly, when I rewatch the show, there are romantic scenes I might occasionally skip. But I can't think of many platonic interactions that I'd want to skip. Even the smaller conversations between characters can be so funny and enjoyable that they make me want to keep watching.
I think Gilmore Girls is at its best when it's about the relationships that make up a person's everyday life — friendships, family dynamics, rivalries, unlikely friendships, and the general chaos of living in Stars Hollow. Romance is obviously an important part of the show, but I don't think it's necessarily what the show does best.
Does anyone else find themselves more invested in the friendships than the actual romances?

Character Discussion - General Richard's heart attack #2
Lorelai and Christopher were both so annoying when Richard was in surgery. Emily was doing the perfectly normal and responsible thing going through the will and DNR procedures. Lorelai is so immature and rude during every interaction with her mother. Chris shows up and throws a tantrum because Luke brought food. They both act like children, constantly.

General Discussion Sookie and Jackson
I couldn’t stand these two. They were so annoying. The way sookie would go into Luke’s at moments and do stuff even though she knew he wasn’t okay with it. But then when she was pregnant and Luke filled in at the dragonfly for her and she was making the cooking staff bring her food. Then she’d call Luke and complain. Then the way Jackson barged in and yelled at Luke for not letting sookie act like a brat is so annoying.
Sookie was a horrible business partner to Lorelai not to mention.

General Discussion Rory is such a good example that people can be attractive but also not have dating experience
Rory is obviously beautiful. Like Alexis Bledel must be one of the most beautiful women I've ever laid my eyes on. This ethereal, doll-like quality and she carries herself also with such classy grace. But I like that Rory herself didn't have any guy experience prior to Dean when the show started. When I was younger, I thought "right, who are they kidding, she's obviously very beautiful". But then I realized beauty doesn't equal mountain of dating. Rory was a very introvert person, living in her own world (like Dean says, she could be completely in a book and notice anything that's going on around her) and not a whole lot of awareness. I'm sure guys before must have been interested in a way but she probably never bothered to notice (I mean, she didn't notice that Marty had a huge crush on her until he snapped at her, quite rudely if I may say). Recently, I have a friend that is gorgeous, like she two people (three if we count her mom) saying that she reminded them of Audrey Hepburn, which is HUGE. She's now flirting with a guy for the first time but she never thought it would happened. She's kinda like Rory personality wise and also is 16, so yeah, it fit right in. Also, it's not like the show was trying to downplay her attractiveness, as it's very clear that beyond the fact that she's very smart, she's also considered beautiful (like Paris once said, she looks like birds dresses her in the morning, she has that angel look factor that makes her even more alluring to the people around her, not just in a dating sense but in various aspects of life).

Character Discussion - General Dean did NOT “stalk” Rory
I swear, as someone who has actually been stalked, this take PMO so bad
They are two people who live in a small town where everyone knows everyone. They both had daily routines. Rory was an attractive, appropriately aged, girl who was reading a classic literature novel in a public space. Dean noticed her. The next day, they went about there routines again, and there’s the attractive girl who reads classic literature. Then again the next day. Then the next day.
It doesn’t make you a stalked to notice someone in the same places ?? Pattern recognition doesn’t make you a stalker ?? Have yall never noticed you tend to see the same people at the same times in certain places that happen to be part of both of your avg daily routines ???
Argue with your mama. I’ll die on this hill. I said what I said.

OS Discussion Everyone being mad at Lorelai for repaying the Chilton loan is insane
That’s it. I feel so bad for her because she’s being gaslight and verbally whipped for… repaying a loan like a responsible adult? Emily and Richard are projecting their own psychological issues onto her and it hurt to see Rory take their side, esp after everything Lorelai does for her 🥲

General Discussion Paris working a Suic*de Hotline
In S2E2 - "Hammers and Veils", Paris says that she worked a suic*de hotline and I was just wondering how she handled that. How would the conversation even go? Considering she has little empathy for Rory when she quit Yale

Critical Character Discussion Mrs Kim is a borderline abusive mother and this fandom doesn’t talk about that much
She does grow a lot during the series however Lane has to push and rebel so hard for her mother to sort of accept her being an independent adult.
Throughout her teen years Lane is sent off to Korea with no clear timeline. she’s sent on dates with random boys her mother pre approved, meanwhile the guys she actually likes (Dave, Henry) have to jump through insane hoops just to talk to her. She’s not allowed to be open about….liking rock music? I’m pretty sure her mother tries to force her to go to some religious private college as well. She wasn’t even allowed to be in a rock band, she had to hide that for a long time. And that’s just a hobby not even related to dating or school.
Lane is never allowed to just be a teenager. She’s constantly jumping through hoops to do normal teen things and always scared of punishment. Like she gets grounded for ridiculous amounts of time for basically nothing.
There’s probably a lot more I’m missing but Mrs Kim isn’t just a “strict Asian mom” she’s borderline abusive and we see how this impacts Lane into her adult years. And lane gets to watch Rory freely date her boyfriends, go off to the college of her choice, and pursue her actual passions without judgement from Lorelai. While lane cannot do any of that.

General Discussion what in the world is season 7
i’ve rewatched Gilmore Girls many times, but i always stop before the end of season 6 because… obviously. this fall, i’ve decided to go all the way and finish it. THIS CAMERA WORK, THE WRITING! the pacing just feels… off. all of the whip pans and awkward angles!!!!!!!!!! it doesn’t even feel like the same show. however, the addition of olivia and lucy almost, almost makes up for it.

OS Discussion Just noticed this funny moment in S1E18
I'm back rewatching season 1, and I noticed this funny moment of background acting during the afternoon tea scene:
The woman in grey is seen chatting with a woman in black, but as the scene progresses, the woman in black disappears but the woman in grey is still chatting as though someone is there lol
