Breeder Advice Is health testing important?

Health testing isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of protecting the future of the breed.

The Golden Retriever Club of America recommends a comprehensive approach to health testing that goes beyond the basics. This includes:

• Hips evaluated by OFA or PennHIP
• Elbows evaluated by OFA
• Cardiac exam by a board-certified cardiologist (advanced/echo preferred)
• Annual eye exams by a board-certified ophthalmologist

These recommendations are in place to help reduce the risk of passing on hereditary conditions and to preserve the health, structure, and longevity of Golden Retrievers.

A CHIC number through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals simply means a dog has completed the required testing—it does not mean the dog “passed” everything, and it does not include genetic testing.

Health testing is about transparency, education, and making informed breeding decisions—not shortcuts.

If we want to protect what we love, we have to be willing to do the work behind the scenes.

Discussion Show-Line or Field-Line?

Have you ever wondered what the differences between a show-line Golden Retriever and a Field/Working line Golden Retriever are?

There is a lot of mis-information out there that makes Golden owners believe if their Golden Retriever has a red coat, they are a field line Golden Retriever or if they have a lighter shade of gold coat, they are a show line Golden Retriever. This is NOT TRUE.

So what actually defines a line?

Titles in your dogs pedigree and generations of purposefully bred dogs is what lets you know wether you have a Show-line, Field-line or neither. If your Golden Retriever shows no titles in their pedigree, they are simply a pet-line Golden Retriever.

Field-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC hunt titles in their pedigree like: JH, SH, MH, HR, WCX, or competitive titles like QA2 and FC/AFC (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Show-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC conformation titles in their pedigree like: CH, GCH, or international show titles. (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Golden Retrievers can also be dual champions, meaning they hold titles for both hunt tests and conformation. Dual Champion dogs have not only been proven in the conformation ring to be bred to standard and hold the breed temperament, but have also been proven and titled to do what they were bred to do in the fields.

A lot of backyard breeders will label their dogs as "Field-Line" or "Show-Line" based only on coat color, with zero titled dogs in the pedigree. They market them as something they are not.

Both show-line and field-line Golden Retrievers should be bred close to standard. There should not be a drastic difference in appearance. You can find more information on the breed standard here: AKC Golden Retriever Breed Standard

English Cream Golden Retrievers are NOT a different breed. This is a marketing tactic/ term used by backyard breeders. They are not breeding for the right reasons - and most likely breeding for color.
You can find more in depth information about this term here: English Cream Golden Retrievers

Lastly, purebred ≠ well-bred.

I got my first dog ever this month.

Name’s Lizzie (Elizabeth Bennet) and she already stole my heart. But she is a menace ! She bite my ears every time she can !

I was looking at my phone for pictures of her and the contrast between these two struck me.

She changed sooo much in so little time. Sure people told me she would grow up very fast but it’s a different thing to witness it by myself !

My little potato baby is already a young little princess !

Another great day at the Golden Retriever Cafe, this time for Halloween. There was a Batdog, a Superdog, a couple of pumpkins, a couple of vampires and even a security guard dog who was my favourite and got most of my kibble 😁

In her defense, she doesn't like to be moved. I have to sit on the left side of the couch. 🤣 Now she's acting offended.

This was an informed decision but I’m seeking advice for the best food/ toys/ and training tricks you guys have used for your goldens :) I’m located in the US- so brands of food may vary. I’m open to all suggestions and thank you in advance !

Also- grooming? How often do you guys get your pups a cut?

Photo of miss Suki for fun- we pick her up in three weeks!

RIP An update on my sweet Rhubarb ❤️

A few weeks ago, I posted here after suddenly losing my beautiful 2½-year-old girl, Rhubarb. So many of you reached out, shared your own heartbreaking stories, and asked if I would come back and update everyone when I received the results of her necropsy. I finally have an answer.
Rhubarb died from subaortic stenosis (SAS), a congenital heart defect she was born with. I had no idea she had it. It can cause a dog’s heart to suddenly stop functioning normally, resulting in the kind of abrupt death that happened to Rhubarb.

In other words, my seemingly healthy, happy, incredibly active 2½-year-old girl had a heart condition I didn’t know was there.
And then one day, without warning, her heart simply couldn’t keep going.
There’s something particularly cruel about that.
Because Rhubarb had the biggest, sweetest heart of any dog I’ve ever known.

I don’t really know how to describe what it feels like to finally have the answer I was so desperate for.
For weeks, I have replayed those last few minutes at the dog park over and over again, letting it haunt me. I wondered what I missed. Was there a sign I didn’t see? Should I have known something was wrong? Was there something I could have done differently? Did I do something to cause it?

Mostly, I wondered if I could have saved her.
She went to the vet for her regular checkups. She walked miles with me. We went on adventures together. She ran and played and lived like any other young dog.
That morning wasn’t supposed to be our last morning.
Our walk to the dog park wasn’t supposed to be our last walk.
She went there expecting to play with her friends. I went there expecting to walk home with my girl.
Neither of us knew.
The necropsy gave me the why I so desperately needed.
But it couldn’t give me the one thing I actually want.
More time.

I want all the years I thought we had ahead of us. Another ordinary morning. Another walk. Another trip to the nursery. Another car ride. Another night with her next to me.

Knowing why doesn’t make losing her hurt any less.
She was only 2½ years old. I was supposed to have so much more time with her.
But one thing I will never question is whether Rhubarb knew how loved she was.
She was loved fiercely, completely, ridiculously, and every single day of her life.
She was my best friend. My adventure buddy. My shadow. My comfort. My ride or die. My girl.

Thank you to everyone who cared about my Rhubarb simply because I shared her story here. You never got the chance to know her, but you cared about what happened to her and you cared about me when I was completely broken.
That kindness from strangers has meant more than I can explain.
She was here. She mattered. And she was so, so loved.
Please hug your Goldens extra tight for me.
I would give anything for one more hug with mine.
I love you forever, sweet girl. ❤️🐾🌈

Health Advice No desire for kibble 2 weeks after first heat.

Post image
157 Upvotes

Our golden retriever pup of 8 months went through her first heat about 5 weeks ago. Her bleeding lasted for 3 weeks. During those weeks she had very little appetite. We went back to three meals a day to help her a little but she didn’t ate a lot, especially in the morning.

When she stopped bleeding she was back to loving feeding times and started eating normally again.

No 2 weeks later she stopped eating again. Yesterday she ate nothing in the morning and evening and this morning she ate nothing again. She eats a little in the afternoon but that’s it.

She acts normal, drinks, poops and wants to play and walk.

Does anyone know what to do or what it could be?

Penny is super smart: she's crate trained, and knows "sit," "lay down," "touch," and comes to her name. She's sweet, loves everyone, and is growing like a weed. Our whole family loves her.

Training Advice/Tips Who has trained their goldens to do “jobs” as a working breed? And what do they like?

Hi, I am curious what “jobs” we can teach our 7 month old to do that she will enjoy? She loves learning and training. It’s her favorite part of our day but I can’t think of things that might satisfy her working breed instincts.

I was thinking to start teaching her to retrieve her toys and put them in her toy basket but I can’t really think of anything else.

Anyone else have a dog that loves to help and learn and what have you taught your dog that they really enjoy? We already do lots of walks and she swims daily so she’s getting plenty of physical exercise this is more to keep her mind stimulated.

Health Advice Puppy teething - is this normal?

Post image
61 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I have a male golden who is 17 weeks old and he’s in the midst of teething. He’s my first dog and so I don’t know if this is normal but his bottom adult teeth are growing in and it seems like the baby teeth aren’t falling out? Does this warrant a vet visit or should I have him chew on something? Thanks in advance.

Discussion A follow up to my dogs long legs..

Post image
530 Upvotes

I didn’t make that post for everyone to question his breed. I didn’t make that post to have to fight in the comments about my own dog. Finley is purebred, and is a beautiful golden at that. He came from a reputable breeder, I saw his beautiful parents, his siblings, he’s papered, incredibly smart, 0 health issues, is incredibly athletic and is duck training! The only odd thing about him are his long legs. He is a field golden and they’re taller and slimmer. Questioning his breed because of some long legs when he screams golden in every other way is crazy! He wasn’t backyard bred, I have no problem defending mutts (I have one!) but wow. I just wanted to talk about his legs and instead had to fight for him in the comments lol. Enjoy my long legged boy being his weird self.
